A Duke In The Rough

Rate this book
How can a newly minted duke escape title-seeking debutantes? Lie, of course!Lady Honoria Bell never recovered from her broken heart. Fending off suitors her marquess father forces in her path, she’s put aside hopes of marriage. However, word of a house party hosted by the new, eligible Duke of Burwood brings a renewed gleam to her father’s eye. But regardless of the new duke’s appeal, Honoria knows he won’t fill the void Drake Merrick left.

If there’s one thing Drake Merrick knows, it’s that aristocratic women care more about a title than they do love. Losing the love of his life because he was a lowly groom proved it. So, when a twist of fate makes him the new Duke of Burwood, he’s determined to choose a bride who wants him—not his title.

Switching places with his man of business seems like the perfect plan to test the affections of eager debutantes. Until it backfires the moment Honoria arrives, and he realizes his heart will always be irrevocably hers.

But will his deception allow her to prove her love? Or will his lies destroy it?

Finding some of the things she read lacking-or at least not ending the way she thought they should-she started making up her own stories. They lived within her vivid imagination for a long, long time until one day they broke free and put themselves on a page. Although the book is extremely repetitive and the same thing is going on and on for the entire time, I liked that it was sweet and quite funny.

Sorry, but all I have to say is "WHAT A BORING BOOK!!
It already started with Drake's deception in pretending that he was not the Duke but Simon. Tired of this thread of deceit, but that would be my problem.
Then all his whining "ah, Honoria didn't want me because I was poor and just the boy from the stables and bla bla bla..." and she also "ah, he doesn't love me anymore, oh, it's so unfair, oh no he fell in love with someone else, and blah, blah, blah..."
All the time he throws her rejection from years ago in Honoria's face. She looked like a rag doll, unwilling.
That's practically the entire book. There are 37 chapters of pure excitement and repetition.
Not even the fact that he is a virgin alleviates all this meaningless drama. And that's because the whole book takes place at a country party that lasts a few days!

Eight years ago, Honoria's heart was broken over her father's refusal of marriage to their groom, Drake Merrick. Granted she was only seventeen and he wasn't much older. Broken hearted, he leaves and joins the military. For eight years it's been nothing but vicious gossip with whispers of her ruination in the horrid scandal sheet The Muckraker.
Drake's fortune has changed and he has much to offer Honoria, if she will only have him. He must handle this carefully to test that she loves the man and nothing else. If his plan backfires, he could lose the only woman he's ever loved.
I can't decide if this masquerade lasted too long or not. It was a frustrating plot for a new duke.
Descriptive sex.

Two stars because as annoying as this book is, I did finish it. Although I was skimming pretty her by the end.

I just can’t get past how stupid every character in this story is. Drake plans a whole charade to hide his identify to make sure “she loves me for me,” then goes out of his way to self-sabotage and push away the woman he loves. He forms an attachment with the most narcissistic baby-woman ever after knowing her for 24 hours because she got hurt doing something he specifically told her NOT to do? Honoria makes it clear to her parents that she loves Drake, while he consistently pushes her away for…reasons? Who fucking knows.

Although it says this book is the first in a series, it must be a follow-up to some earlier series, because there were at least a dozen characters that were trotted out in what were clearly Easter eggs for fans. The author also made a big deal of having one specific character overhear something that later appears in the gossip rag. 🙄 so much for the intrepid society of annoying female characters solving that one.

A Duke in the Rough is book 1 in Trisha Messmer's newest series The London Ladies' League. This is a spin-off from the author's Hope Clinic series, which is amazing! I strongly recommend reading the Hope Clinic series first for maximum enjoyment because main and side characters from all the Hope Clinic series books appear or are mentioned in this new book, and when they pop up it feels like visiting with old friends. Lady Honoria Bell (who is first mentioned in book 3 but we see much more of her in books 4 and 5) finally gets her second-chance romance in A Duke in the Rough.

Let's dive in...
Drake Merrick had never forgotten, or really moved on from the girl that confessed her love, then refused him eight years ago. Back from India as a newly minted duke, Drake is hopeful he can win Honoria's heart for good now that he's moved up in the world. But at the same time, he wants Honoria to love him for himself, like before, and not just for his new title. Hosting a house party is the perfect opportunity to reenter society, and taking on the role of the duke's man of business will leave his friend Simon to masquerade as the new, much-sought-after, unmarried duke. Drake's logic is simple... While all the ladies are batting their eyelashes trying to win the new duke's favor, Drake can be free to pursue Honoria.

Honoria had never gotten over the handsome groom with whom she used to go riding, and eventually fell in love. When Drake approached her father eight years ago to ask for her hand, Lord Stratford had loftier plans for his daughter and Honoria is forced to refuse him. To help keep Drake away, Lord Stratford even buys Drake a military commission, which he accepts, leaving England and his love for Honoria behind. But Honoria is shocked to see Drake is the new duke's man of business and realizes they will be under the same roof at the house party. Luckily Honoria has the support of her circle of friends also in attendance as they try to ferret out who is feeding information to The Muckraker gossip rag. Will Honoria figure out Drake's true identity? Will Simon decide he wants Honoria for himself? Will one of Honoria's best friends set her cap for Drake?

This was a lovely story with lots of fun and charm. It also presented an interesting history for Drake and how he came to inherit. I'm not a huge fan of swapping places or identity deception tropes but I felt like this was carried out pretty well. Drake comes across as a loyal and humble man, but he still holds resentment. Right off the bat he tests Honoria's feelings towards him when he unabashedly flirts with her friends. It's fun and games until Drake's sense of duty gets him in a pickle and nearly costs him dearly. Fortunately there are friends and allies aplenty to help and we get to see Honoria stand up to her parents once and for all.

I wasn't a big fan of the reveal at the end. The party guests were much more forgiving than Honoria, and I laughed at title-hungry Anne coming to the realization that she had let a duke slip through her fingers. Singing the song, with Honoria facing her fear to move the focus off of Drake's deception didn't accomplish anything except make him emotional for a public proposal. I guess I was hoping for something more celebratory but Drake's admission outshined everything at that point.

I love a tightly-woven book series, and you definitely have that here. If you have read the Hope Clinic series, Honoria's circle of friends making up the London Ladies' League will have familiar names:

Anne Weatherby, sister of Andrew Weatherby (prequel)

Lady Miranda Townsend, sister of Laurence, Viscount Montgomery (book 3)

Lady Charlotte Talbot, sister of Lord Nash (book 5)

There are also references to Honoria's failed courtships with Dr. Marbry (book 4) and Lord Nash (book 5), and the Duke and Duchess of Ashton (book 1) and Victor Pratt (book 5) are among the house party guests. Even the portly Lord Middlebury (book 2) is there, still lurking about for a young bride.

One of the things I love about Trisha Messmer's books is that the stories are constantly moving, like a kiddie roller coaster with highs and lows, but never any lulls. That is a big win for me. Her balance of dialogue and introspection is spot-on, and I love the new characters we get to meet, including Drake's mother and sister, and Aunt Kitty, who is a hoot.

All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to the next one in the series. The author's signature single love scene rates a 2 on my steam scale. Overall I rate this book 5 stars. It was excellent!

I received an ARC of A Duke in the Rough from the author in exchange for my honest review.

Great concept but the delivery lacked a bit

I really enjoyed this book. It was an interesting twist for the love story and Drake’s unexpected rise to the peerage. I thought the characters were all entertaining and well developed. While I loved the main characters, Drake and Honoria, I also found them very frustrating. In a lot of ways they created their own hurt with pride and fear. Honoria had wronged Drake and felt awful but never just gave him a genuine apology and tell him her feelings. Drake still loved her but wouldn’t let his pride allow him to forgive, trust, and move on. Instead they both made each other jealous which created a whole other set of problems that almost separated them for good. The story had great side characters. I absolutely loved Simon. He was full of wit and funny anecdotes, and his banter with Drake and Charlotte was hilarious. Aunt Kitty was another unexpected bright spot. Honoria’s friends had so much personality except Anne. Her character was spoiled, immature, superficial, and somewhat selfish. She didn’t have the depth that her friends had.

The whole plot of Drake potentially marrying another due to his unearned guilt and duty was really disappointing. I just felt like so much of the book was wasted with that. It just didn’t make sense that he would give up on a love he longed for over an 8 year period so easily, and she was too willing to just let it all happen after waiting so long knowing everyone would be miserable in the end, and she finally had a chance to make things right. The idea that Drake would be with Anne was unbearable especially since everyone kept saying it wasn’t his fault. It was hard to read. I was tempted to just skip though some pages.

Luckily, they did her the happy ending, but it took so long. It seemed like most of the book was about longing and making poor assumptions instead of the expression of love. I wanted more romance and way less angst. The book was almost over before there was even the slightest bit of affection. I think I just expected more romance between the two of them after loving each other and waiting for 8 years. I did enjoy some of the characters and the main plot, but their suffering just dragged on way too long for me. I just prefer more love and romance so I could only give 3.5 stars.

This charming second-chance romance with many parallels to Jane Austen's "Persuasion" is the start of a new series that follows on from the Hope Clinic series. The well-developed plot is endearing, with additional class difference, house party and pretend identity themes, laugh-out-loud moments, a few steamy love scenes and some twists and turns.
The characters are very likeable and it was nice to meet those from the previous series again.

Eight years ago, Honoria and Drake fell in love in their adolescence, but he was a simple groom and she is a lady. Her parents did not approve of their relationship and Honoria’s mother persuaded her to end it for the good of both of them and give Drake a chance to develop.
But she became the target of a gossip magazine that continued to spread lies about her over the years.
Disappointed and hurt that she jilted him, Drake left her, joined the army and was sent to India. There he learned that he has inherited a dukedom and that he has been lied to by his parents since childhood.
Now back in England, he swaps identities with his best friend and businessman Simon to escape being chased by debutantes and their matchmaking parents. He throws a house party and also invites Honoria’s family.
The two are still in love, but think it’s one-sided, neither of them wants to admit it, pride and stubbornness keep them apart. They start flirting with others to make the other jealous, but when another lady gets hurt at the party, Drake feels responsible for her mishap and plans to propose to her...

If you are a fan of Jane Austen and whimsical second chance romances, you will love the book!

A great start to a new series and it beautifully reunites us with friends from the Hope Clinic series.

At 17 years old, Lady Honoria Bell fell in with Drake Merrick who worked as a groom on her father’s estate. He approaches her father about marrying her but he refuses his request telling him that she needs to marry a titled gentlemen so she can live the life she is accustomed to. He is devastated, and needs to get away so he joins the military.

Lady Honoria Bell and her closest friends have joined together to determine who is writing the scandalous gossip in the Mudracker. Lady Honoria has been targeted in the scandal sheet and wants to put a stop to it.

They are all attending a house party and the new Duke of Burwood is expected to be there. Drake’s situation has changed greatly, he is actually the Duke of Burwood but he has never gotten over that her father the Earl of Stratford told him that she didn’t want to marry him so he wants to test the waters, so to speak. He talks his friend Simon, who disagrees with his plan, to masquerade as the Duke of Burwood and he pretends he is his man of business.

What a tangled web of decent Drake weaves for himself but it provided the most entertaining roller coaster of a story. Can they overcome the many obstacles in their path, a meddling father, lies, misunderstandings, secrets, and insecurities? I loved Drake and Honoria, they were both such caring, sweet, decent people that deserved to get their HEA.

Trisha Messmer has brilliantly given us the perfect start to a lively new series with fun characters, who I hope to see again, especially Simon and Charlotte, there was definitely something simmering between them. We also need to uncover the perpetrator writing for the Mudracker.

A thoroughly enjoyable read! I received an ARC copy of the book from the author, and I am leaving this review voluntarily, all thought and opinions are my own.

Thank you @trishmessmer for my complimentary eBook. My thoughts are my own.

BRIEF SUMMARY: When the beautiful Lady Honoria Bell refuses his proposal because he does not have a title, Drake Merrick joins the military and leaves England.
However, years later, when he unexpectedly inherits a dukedom, Drake knows he only wants a bride who will love him for himself, not his title…and secretly, Drake has never stopped loving Honoria.

Drake decides to host a house party and he invites all the ton, including Lady Honoria and her parents. But Drake pretends to be a man of business, while his friend pretends to be the duke! Will Lady Honoria choose Drake for himself?

MY THOUGHTS: As I have said before, Regency Romance is my guilty pleasure! The 𝘓𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘰𝘯 𝘓𝘢𝘥𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘓𝘦𝘢𝘨𝘶𝘦 is a spin-off from the author’s 𝘏𝘰𝘱𝘦 𝘊𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘤 series and this first novel in the new series is particularly sweet, with likable characters, an intriguing plot, and a fun setting! Some characters from the author’s previous novels make an appearance and it was fun catching up with them. The romance is a slow-burn, and it is sweet and fun until the end when several chapters are devoted to a quite steamy encounter! I especially appreciated that the steam was at the end of the book, (I confess I skipped those chapters) and the characters did not have lewd thoughts or make crude remarks throughout the romance, like so many characters in regency romance novels do. I truly enjoy Messmer’s delightful writing style which stays true to the period. Regency romance lovers will not want to miss this book!

Lady Honoria Bell has friends and a League of Women – The London Ladies League who have joined together to uncover the perpetrator who spreads malicious gossip in a scandal sheet, The Mudracker. Lady Honoria is the group leader and has been the target of said scandal sheet. She also has a secret, a young love for a groomsman long gone from her life. A new Duke has emerged onto the ton, the Duke of Burwood, Drake Merrick. Interestingly, in his past, he was a groomsman who left England for a military career off the continent. A house party is planned to introduce him to society. Not comfortable with his new station and doubting his reception from his first love, Drake devises a not so simple plan of deception. Simon, his best friend, and man of business is pulled into the deception against his better judgement. The plan is put into motion and the game is on. Secrets are never easy to keep, and Lady Honoria and Drake have a fair share of them. Luckily, they have good friends and family that help them with some scheming, all for the course of true love. The story was well written. There are a few steamy scenes, but the love between Honoria and Drake is heartfelt. I did enjoy the banter, schemes, and growth of the characters. Looking forward to the next book in the series, not to mention more on Simon and Charlotte. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Don't worry, we don't need to say goodbye to the Hope Clinic Series just yet! Yes, this is the beginning of the London Ladies League, but all hands are on deck to kick things off at the Duke of Burwood's house party. The Duke of Ashton has an opportunity to use his medical skills. Priscilla is trusted as a chaperone. Lady Charlotte, sister of Lord Nash, gets her feathers ruffled. Mr. Pratt demonstrates his riding abilities. The Weatherby Clan is out in full force causing unexpected trouble. But, most importantly, the long-suffering Honoria gets her happy ending at last.

This book is a must-read for fans of the Hope Clinic. New readers will appreciate the subtle humor which is found throughout the novel and the silly antics of some of the characters. Much to my relief, the newly formed Ladies League was not the usual group of man-hating harpies. They are related to characters from earlier novels so in that sense, they have all been vetted. Their goal is to suss out an unscrupulous gossip columnist. Unfortunately, Burwood's party provides the anonymous writer with plenty of fodder. The party events played out like a theatrical production. Previously introduced characters blended well with the new introductions as waltzes were danced and feet were stomped upon.

With the action-packed house party as the background, Honoria was reunited with Drake Merrick, the man that she loved and lost as a teen. Although there was never any true doubt that the couple would get back together, the other party guests did manage to provide a variety of challenges. However, despite all the mayhem, at its core, this was a story of heartbreak and second chances. Things came to a happy conclusion with many promising future events in store.

I received a free ARC from the author and this is my honest opinion.

It did not take much “Persuasion” for me to read “A Duke In The Rough.” After the first few paragraphs, I could not put it down. Once begun, I simply needed to follow the storyline to discover what happens between Lady Honoria Bell and Drake Merrick. I was not disappointed. The main characters shared love of reading provides an opportunity for some charming references to classic literature, including some written by Jane Austen. Many times, I found myself longing to be a guest at this house party.

When I finish this book, I was filled with conflicting emotions. Elation because I loved the ending but also sadness because now I have to wait for the next installment to find out what happens with this charming cast of characters. I encourage you to grab a copy, read it, and then join me anxiously waiting for book two in “The London Ladies’ League” series by the talented Trisha Messmer.

Oh, what a tangled web we weave …….. Deception, lies, betrayal, fear, heartache, scandal. Sound like a checklist for a Regency Era house party? Absolutely, and we're invited! Drake Merrick, newly minted Duke of Burwood, raised as a commoner, sets in motion an elaborate scheme to find a bride who “wants me for me, not a title”. His primary target? Honoria, who rejected his suit years prior despite professing to love him, a lowly groom. What could possibly go wrong? Once again Ms. Messmer paints a vivid picture of life in the times. Her descriptions of settings and characters are sharp and on point. The main characters struggle with what's in their own hearts and what society expects. As they overcome mistrust and misconception, we readers easily feel a vested interest in their success ……. even if we just want to slap them at times! So grab that cup of tea, settle into that comfy chair, and spend the evening with “a good book”.

I am a sucker for a good second-chance romance and this one delivered! This book has everything… a ladies group that investigates who is behind a scandal sheet, hidden identities, childhood sweethearts, rags to riches, a hilarious great-aunt, and a house party.

Although this story is adjacent to The Hope Clinic series, the reader doesn’t need to have read the series. But it does help with all of the side characters and Honoria’s backstory. I might have been confused if I hadn’t already read that series (which is also excellent).

I was thrilled that Honoria finally got her happy ending after all the failed attachments and matchmaking in The Hope Clinic books. As always, Trisha’s stories are funny, charming, emotional, and inspirational. A Duke in the Rough was no different. I can’t wait for the story to continue!

I received this ARC from the author and this is my honest review.

Can love survive the lies?
Newly minted Duke of Burwood, Drake needs a bride. But not any bride will do. To avoid the title and fortune grabbing debutantes, he persuades his man of affairs to step in his shoes. So, Drake, in a lowly position, can see whether he can find someone who loves him for himself; preferably, Honoria, whose father rejected his suit eight years ago. He still loves her, but also feels resentment about the broken promise, although she was only seventeen at the time. And the question is, of course, does she still love him? And what happens when she discovers the deception?

A well written story that will draw you in. Drake Merrick was a groom for the family of Lady Honoria Bella. He fell in love with Honoria and she with him. When Drake asks her father for her hand in marriage, he is informed that he is not good enough for her. Honoria's mother and father convince her to let Drake go. She listens to them and let the man she loves walk out of her life. She never considers another suitor. Years later a new Duke of Burwood appears in society and his man of business is none other than Drake Merrick. How will Honoria and Drake handle seeing each other again. Is that all there is to Drake now? Are they both still in love? You must read this to find these answers and so much more!!

The story was wonderful,

I really enjoyed the story of second chances, the first in a series. Homer is and Drake thought themselves in love eight years ago, though too young at that time. Life separated them with encouragement from others and they find themselves together at a house party. There are lots of ins and outs as well as twists and turns, though I do not want to spoil the story. Most of the story has witty dialog and wonderful characters. There is a steamy scene but not too over the top. Tis is a new author to me and I will be looking out for the next book in the series. Enjoy!

Another book I feel thorn about! Writing is very good! To write in entertaining way 344 pages with basically no plot is surely an art! I do not mean it sarcastically - I did truly enjoy writing.
However, there were some stuff that annoyed me!
Why the protagonist decided to make a grand gesture (so to speak) after the accident? I thought I missed some pages at first!
During the fireworks, he asks her a very important (and hurtful) question. She starts to answer, and he says "never mind, it's in the past". Why bother asking?
And the "love proving concept" got me cringe hard.
But the fumbling was sweet.
His family was a delight (especially aunt). And Simon too.

Drake and Honoria is a roller coaster ride! You want to stop the ride smack them both and then make it go faster! Drake was a lowly groom when he fell in love with 17 year old Honoria! He was told by her father the Earl of Stratford! Who has insisted all his life that Honoria needs to marry a title except 8 years later she is still unmarried!!! Drake aka Pendrake aka the Duke of Burwood convinced his man of business to exchange roles so he could be sure his chosen bride loved him not the title! There is only 1 clear choice if these two would get out of their own way! This reunion has more muddy waters as one of Honoria best friends sets her cap for Drake and almost compromises him into proposing! Thank goodness for Honoria aka Honny other friends as they finally get that “friend” to see what everyone else knows! There is a great aunt and another relative who springs up from Drakes side of the family! It is one madcap adventure! You won’t put it down! Bravo *I received an ARC copy for my unbiased review!

I was soooo very glad Honoria FINALLY received her happily Ever After. S has been so supportive of other characters. I was glad that this was not a cut and dry book but it had depth and meaning. Hey would I expect anything else from Messmer. This is the first of a new series but has characters from her previous series.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with guidelines.

twists of fate
Am I glad not to be a woman living in regency times, your father determines whom you marry, society as a comment on everything you do (and mostly you do it wrong) and your social status ruled over happiness and love. Of course everybody wants to be loved for who they are and so Honoria and Drake are balancing on the fine line of overcoming disappointment, finding trust again, believing in love and giving each other another chance.

Second chance at love

Honoria and Drake were sweethearts in their teens. They wanted to marry, but Honoria's father forbid the match. She was from a rich family and Drake was only a groom.

Drake went off to the military. His best friend saved his life. Simon was the best friend's name.

Honoria and Drake renewed their love for each other 8 years later.

The only thing I did not like about this book was pre marital sex.

This was an engaging, second chance story. Lady Honoria was very kind and caring, often to her own detriment. Drake Merrick, the Duke of Burwood, has a history with Honoria, but he wants to make sure he is wanted for himself and not his title. They obviously still had feelings for each other but hadn’t really talked together about how they felt. Drake’s own sense of honour also caused problems. Luckily for them, Honoria had two good friends who were determined they got a happy ending. I did find the other friend, Anne Weatherby, very annoying and wondered how she fitted in with their group. There is still the mystery writer of gossip to uncover. I’m looking forward to reading the next in the series. I received the copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

What To Avoid When Seeking a Bride!
This book had me laughing and crying (happy tears) every so often.
Honestly, it is a story well worth reading with some very well rounded and quite believable characters in Honoria and Drake.
Their ups and downs (and all because of Drake being unacceptable as suitable husband material by her father) were pure entertainment and me being me, I loved it all!

Even though this is the start of a new series, characters from the Hope Clinic series make more than just an appearance. I enjoyed the storyline about love getting a second chance. The heroine has refused offers due to her love for a groom 8 years ago. The groom, our hero, went off to the army and later found out he inherited a dukedom. He trades places with his steward to see if he can find true love. I liked the secondary characters almost as much as the main ones. The heroine’s father finally came around to wanting his daughter’s happiness more than a connection. I received an ARC for an honest review.

It would help to have read this author’s Hope Clinic series before reading this book. Many of the characters were in that series which helped in knowing their backgrounds. Without knowing that, I think this book would have been too confusing.
