I read this book as research for an academic paper I was working on. I needed something that would re-introduce me to the concepts of the TESOL literature. So, I knew from the start that this wouldn't be a casual read.

I found the papers in this volume very insightful, though their quality and coverage were also quite uneven. The topics covered ranged from learner-centered teaching, tasked-based learning, to action research and the role of English as a global language. The breadth of the papers is one of the book's charms. You can learn a lot about various trends in TESOL research. However, I felt the level of finish on each paper varied. Some papers were conference papers that had been revised for the volume. These chapters have a kind of "work-in-progress" feel to them. Other chapters were taken from other edited volumes or journal articles. These articles were more polished.

One word of warning: This book is an academic book written for other academics. I don't recommend it for practicing English teachers that need a more hands-on understanding of English language teaching. There are other, better, books for that, some written by David Nunan. But, if you are interested in the academic writing of a top scholar in the field, this might be the book for you.
