USA Today bestselling author Regine Abel is a fantasy, paranormal, and sci-fi junkie. Anything with a bit of magic, a touch of the unusual, and a lot of romance will have her jumping for joy. She loves writing hot alien warriors meeting no-nonsense, kick-ass heroines. Her novels are steamy, action-packed, and with the twists and turns you never saw coming.
Before devoting herself as a full-time writer, Regine had surrendered to her other passions: music and video games! After a decade working as a Sound Engineer in movie dubbing and live concerts, Regine became a professional Game Designer and Creative Director, a career that has led her from her home in Canada to the US and various countries in Europe and Asia.
This was a fun take on a sci fi romance Christmas story, with a world set up I'm quite intrigued by (the heroes are from an empathic race who can permanently shape shift into their most compatible mate's species) and a cinnamon roll hero. A little clunky in the writing, but very enjoyable
I was a little nervous during the first third of the book that Anders was gonna be a doormat and not get anything beyond positive feelings from Kathleen. Luckily, his personality came out more during the second half and he set some boundaries. The Mail-order trope isn’t my fave, but this was funny with Kathleen being “gifted” Anders (don’t worry guys, there’s nothing sketchy). Kathleen came into her power, and had started that before meeting Anders. Anders made the process go much more smoothly. They were a sweet couple.
Spice: 2/5
Triggers: internalized and external fatphobia, poor self esteem, near death of baby animal, stalking and harassment behaviors from side character
A dream come true! Kathleen is a delightful character, with a quirky sense of humor, self assured, realistic about her looks, but not dismayed by them. But...is it true? She has been matched to an Empath from Lyria. They are highly desired, but not easy to be matched to. Lucky girl! Because an empath seeks to please his mate, I can see how easy it could be for him to become a doormat. Anders is not a doormat: he and Kathleen have many issues to iron out before they can be a happy couple. It’s a fascinating process, one I think you will enjoy as much as I did. I couldn’t be more pleased with the outcome of this sweet holiday story!
I loved this book it was full of humor, a strong sexy alpha male who took on the appearance of our heroines greatest fantasy but turned out to be a dream vome true. I highly recommend this book and this author to everyone who loves syfy romance. Be sure to pick up a copy you will be very very glad that i did.
I think this is my favourite by Ms Abel thus far! Beautifully written with serious thought and depth, and a few chuckles along the way. I would love of this became a series!!
This was such a sweet longer novella. I really enjoyed Katherine and Anders personalities and their cute interactions. BUT the star of the show was sweet little Worf. So stinkin cute. Where the hell do I get one?!
Right away I loved Kat. She was sarcastic, hilarious, strong, and portrayed self confidence while having normal insecurities. I loved it when she said " I'd rather use a cheese grater shaped like a dildo to scratch any itch I may have than to let his wiener anywhere near my HooHa".
Anders was also lovable with his sweet, kind, and quirky personality. The alien hero, was very unique and different. I have never read this take on aliens before. How he was born, raised, and met his mate was very original. It was a nice change. Kat was a little quick to accept the circumstances but that's ok.
Lately I have read some verrrrry disappointing books I couldn't even finish with heroes who cheated, forced sex through threats, coercion etc. This story broke my reading depression slump. Thank God! It had lovable characters, adorable pets, a good story, and pace. The only negative thing is all my Christmas presents won't be able to compare to receiving a Lorian. I want one!!!! Please tell me there will be more books in this universe
Update: There will be more books in this universe based on fb convo.... yay! Merry xmas to us. Lol.
Its a super Merry Christmas when your sister is able to snag you soulmate! Kathleen is smart and hihhly educated with low self esteem, Anders is a Lyrian which is a species known for being empaths and finding their soul mates. Let the fun begin! Super cute read. Great new world, hope to see more in a new series!
This was cute! I love a 36 year old FMC that has her own life going on outside of a man. Anders was confident and cheeky and I loved that he adored Kathleen but still made sure to speak his mind and ensure he kept his own wants and needs known.
I enjoyed the world building and character development of this story and it built to a nice heat level. I'd love to read more stories about the Lyrians.
Come here and let me 👉Boop your ❤️. This was an adorable Christmas read, I was intrigued with the summary and quickly fell in love with the quirky couple.
I absolutely was charmed by this book !!! From the first word to the last , it is chock full of emotions and feelings that I often feel myself .
Kathleen is an introverted scientist of xenobiology on a community on Mars. She is not interested in a relationship of any kind . Not that there is much to choose from where she is at . Her sister lives on Alpha Centauri, and has a Christmas present for her, and her adorable pet Worf.
Anders is a Lyrian empath. Their culture has very few females, and most of his hive brothers are being sent out to other planets to become mates. They are able to read Auras, and know if the female is going to be soulmate material . Although not routed through the regular ,intense protocols, Anders and his patriarch are hopeful for a match.
Kathleen and Anders do not meet in the traditional sense, but their love story will stick with me for a very long time. I look forward to many more stories in this universe and I absolutely enjoyed this story immensely!!
Getting a hunky, empathic, perfect alien man for Christmas from your sibling sounds like a good time, but it could have turned out very differently for Kathleen and Anders than it did. On top of that, given the abbreviated time frame they had to get to know one another, it could have gone downhill fast. (No worries, everyone! Regine Abel gives good HEA and everything turned out a-okay!)
(But before we get to that HEA...) Kathleen is...let's say she's entrenched in her way of doing things and absolutely believes herself to be happy without ever trying to spread her wings and find more out of life. She's fine being single. She's fine with the way she looks. She's good at her job and all that combined works for her. (As it should, really, but it's also good to push yourself out of your comfort zone at times because you just might find something you're WAY into. Like a hunky alien empath. You know, if that's what pushes your buttons.)
So Kathleen is sort of stuck in a rut and her sister decides she's going to give her a tiny kick in the pants to get her out of it. That kick in the pants comes in the shape of the aforementioned hunky alien empath. The guy who doesn't quite fit in with his own people, but it loved all the same. His quirks just make him challenging to match until Kathleen comes along.
For all Anders is an empath and is 100% dedicated to loving Kathleen and making her life easier, he's also very much his own person. He's smart and funny and he forms a bond with Kathleen before he ever actually meets her. He's secure in himself in a super non-toxic way (you know, toxic like Wilson is. Blerch.) and I'm really digging that.
Workaholics, empaths, cute alien pets, and meet and greet that was kinda naked on Anders end. Ehh, it all worked out in the end, right? What's a little case of nudity when you end up with the alien of your dreams?
I’ll say it again, I'll always pick up a book with an older, independent heroine! An Alien for Christmas is a cozy, quirky gem. This one brings holiday warmth, alien romance, emotional healing, and just enough heat to melt a snowbank.
Kathleen, 36 and blissfully single, is completely content running her life solo. She’s got her own job (on Mars), her own boundaries, and absolutely no plans to fall in love - especially not during the holidays. But her well-meaning sister has other ideas, and soon Kathleen finds herself face-to-face with Anders, a sweet and slightly awkward alien who is 100% sure she’s his soulmate.
Anders is a Lyrian empath, born in a culture with very few females, emotionally attuned to others, and biologically designed to recognise and adapt to his perfect match. He can even shape-shift into his mate’s species, making his bond with Kathleen both literal and emotional. He’s earnest, devoted, and just the right amount of weird. Basically, if cinnamon rolls came from outerspace, it’d be this guy.
Kathleen, meanwhile, is a total delight: confident, sarcastic, self-aware, and refreshingly real. She has insecurities like anyone else, but she handles them with humor and heart. Watching her soften toward Anders - and seeing how gently he supports her - is where the romance really shines.
The story has some clunky spots in the writing, and the setup moves fast, but the emotional tone stays strong. There’s sweetness, spice, some adorable alien misunderstandings, and even a cute alien pet. It’s got Hallmark holiday charm, but with pheromones, glowing auras, and just a hint of tail action.
Tropes: 🎄 Alien soulmate bond 🎄 Grumpy/skeptical FMC x cinnamon roll MMC 🎄 Found family + cozy romance 🎄 Forced proximity (holiday edition) 🎄 Holiday romance
Cute! I like the interesting concept of the alien match matching and the fact that Anders was his own person and not meant to be a slave to the needs of his mate made all the difference to making this enjoyable.
It started off a bit too slow for my liking, with a lot of scenes before the couple meet. They did turn out to be pretty relevant for the plot later on. Still, I kept thinking "Geez - just let them meet already!" A lot of that could've been trimmed down or summarized more. It wasn't boring per se, just not what I wanted to read about when you know what's to come. For example, too many scenes with a certain annoying unwanted suitor. It was meant to establish how pushy and obnoxious he was, and one scene could've done it just fine.
It did build anticipation for their first meeting, but I think some of those details or scenes could've been shortened, allowing more time to be devoted to the couple's interactions. Like, there's talk about them snuggling in bed and Anders laying his tempting touches on her, but those could've been scenes instead of summarized!! This is what the people want!
Still a very cute story from a great awesome. Good as a cozy holiday or anytime read.
DNF 27% - This made me uncomfortable. More so than other “mail-order bride/groom” books.
By 27%, the only thing we know about the hero is that he’s a little weird for his kind, and that he’s gone to a lot of effort to change himself to be perfect for a person he’s never met before, who doesn’t know he exists, all based on a quiz filled out by the heroine’s sister.
Sister buys heroine a spouse and the company matches her, then never I forms her they’re sending him. The hero literally designs his appearance around her favorite movie actor (which I found weird and creepy, not romantic). He does watches videos of her and reads I formation about her without her knowledge — again — creepy. Downloads information on Earth customs and being the perfect boyfriend. Then SHIPS HIMSELF TO HER HOME. All of this is a mail order service. Mail ordering a person designed to your specifications.
Then when he arrives, her sister talks about him like he’s a sex toy modeled after her favorite actor, that she should have sex with him… but only bothering to mention explaining he’s sentient in time to get off the phone and telling her there’s no return policy.
This just made me feel so many levels of uncomfortable.
This is a sweet sci-fi holiday romance and the first book in the Empaths of Lyria series.
Human FMC Kathleen is a scientist working on Mars. She’s perfectly happy being single, though everyone around her seems to have opinions about it. Then her sister sends her the “perfect man” for Christmas, MMC Anders, an alien empath.
I enjoyed this book. It was fun with a slow-burn vibe, though since it isn’t very long, the romance doesn’t feel too slow. The premise is engaging, and I liked the unique take on empaths. I also appreciated watching the characters genuinely get to know each other. There are strong themes of self-confidence and self-esteem woven throughout, and the MMC helps the FMC work through these in a thoughtful way.
Overall, this is a really fun seasonal read. I hope to see more of this series in the future.
Spice 4/5 Plot: 4.5/5 Writing: 4.5/5 My Enjoyment: 4.5/5
Regina Able is a rockstar! I’m guessing this is the start of an exciting new series and will hopefully have some appearances from PMA’s Kayog. 😀
I really like how The Dick turns out to be a nice guy and becomes friends with Anders. Kathleen feels like an archetype of every nerd girl who’s ever felt insecure enough to do and say really unfortunate things. 🩷
My only complaints…. 1) I wish the Lyrians could still shift to their Lyrian form after bonding with a mate. 2) Anders should have kept his horns and tail in human form. I mean come on, a hottie with horns and a tail?!? That’s just more hotness 👍🏾😀🤣. Speaking for myself, the perfect alien world make it possible for me to grow horns and a tail too. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
I’m also super curious to see how Lyrian DNA comes through in the children of human/Lyrian couples.
This was just what I needed to get me out of my slump. It was fun, sweet, interesting, detailed, adorable, insightful; and it had a freaking adorable alien pet! The relationship development and characters growth was on point. The idea of buying a mate can obviously be a bit cringeworthy, but that’s not what this was. More like a matchmaker site story, with a twist. I don’t want to get spoilery, so I won’t explain too much. I really enjoyed seeing this couple get to know each other and work through issues that are very common with us human beans. Kathleen had self esteem issues, but was a strong person and fun to read. Anders was the perfect mix of caring, understanding and alpha. Loved it.
It brought everything you want in a story. I would love to read more of this new exciting set and meet the women who fall in love with them. I wish I could have gave it a ten. I want to know her sister story and see if she had to let go being in control an being the one everyone lean on when they need someone to count on and help them be strong. I love word he was so cute and he was her baby that protected her and love her no matter what she did and her man Anders was so nice an funny and care about her and her well being as a person. Buy the book it is so worth it.
I never connected with these two. It was just a little… flat. It takes over a quarter of the book (54 pages) for them to even meet. In 189 pages, that was a lot of wasted build up that literally went nowhere. It takes half of the book for a kiss! I loved the idea of it, but it just wasn’t engaging or compelling. The parts that were really interesting were sort of side notes and brushed over (like Kathleen’s research and the fact she’s on a different planet) and it was more about workplace relations. I just missed that world building from her other books that I loved. The outline was there, but it just wasn’t fleshed into anything.
I fell on love with Anders the moment he appeared on the page. The fact that he is a "rebel" empath makes him soooo real. He was perfect for Kathleen, and I love that her sister, Clarissa, saw her for who she was and not for what Kathleen what wanted people to believe.
Kathleen is so like many of us... accepting the lot in life because of unrealistic standards and believing that is what you deserve. I love that when she needs correction, she knows who to go to and accepts is and change.
Excellent subject, characters!!! I would love to see more from the world of Lydai.
Can’t say I hated this one!! A little late for a holiday read but it’s been on my list for a while now. I’m happy to report I finally had time to sit down with Regine Abel, who I have heard so much about! I didn’t really know what to expect as this isn’t my normal genre. There’s deff something here, the world building was extremely intriguing! The main character Kathleen, was certainly relatable even with her insecurities. Anders was seemingly the ideal man with him being an empath ( and a shapeshifter— seriously where can I get one of those cleaning octopus looking things!!!) I don’t think this will be my last read by this author… I have never encountered a romance involving a birdman!!
Anders and Kathleen's story was short and cute with a whacking dose of reality. How often do we needlessly obsess about what we think others are thinking about us? At first I thought a man that turned into whatever you wanted would be as exciting as a doormat but Anders had his own personality too. The way Ms Abel blended his ability to adjust to Kathleen and still be himself was brilliant. All that said, my favourite character in the whole book was Worf. Too cute!
