B.R.Maul is an award-winning author. His debut novel "In the Land of Magnanthia" (book 1 in his "Portals, Passages & Pathways" series) won an award for Best Sci-fi/Fantasy/Horror ebook in the 2015 Independent Publishers Awards held in New York City. This is an international award.
Ever since he was a young boy, Maul has had a passion for stories, especially fantasy fiction. Among his favorites are "The Hobbit;" "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe;" and the Harry Potter books. Maul recalls the time he fell in love with the fantasy fiction genre: "I was just a young boy walking up and down the rows of books in my elementary school's library when I happened upon this little, beaten-up book, "The Hobbit." Turning to the table of contents, chapter five's title 'Riddles in the Dark' grabbed my attention and I had to know more. I couldn't wait to get home to read the book." Maul also enjoyed playing Basic Dungeons & Dragons as a child with his best friend and older brother; his favorite character was the wizard.
Maul still enjoys reading books, watching movies, and playing games full of wizards, dragons, knights, and all the fantastic creatures. Maul went to college for creative writing and secondary English education. His plan was to teach English/writing to high school students until he could retire, it was then he had planned to write fiction stories. However, a series of events changed his life, marrying his wife, starting a family, and witnessing several loved ones pass away. Learning, and then coming to realize, how precious life is, Maul was compelled to quit teaching and start writing. Since his childhood love for fantasy stories never diminished, he got started on "Portals, Passages & Pathways" and he has never looked back.
Maul grew up in the heart of the Red River Valley in the town of Moorhead, Minnesota, where he and his wife and three daughters currently reside. He has lived in the Red River Valley most of his life, where he enjoys peaceful living. Maul dreams of someday living on one of Minnesota's beautiful lakes.
The award-winning author loves his wife, three girls, and his life in the state of Minnesota; however, if you ask him what he is most grateful for, it's his walk with the Lord Jesus Christ.
Despite the inklings of promise, this young adult fantasy failed to fully captivate my interest by the end.
Briefly, this is a story about a boy named Simon who gets caught up in a combined Lord of the Rings and Chronicles of Narnia type plot where he journeys to the realm of Magnanthia. Of course, it turns out that he is the chosen one and must embark on a quest of great significance, with his company of protectors, to defeat the evil plaguing this mystical land.
Unfortunately, book number one fails to beguile or fascinate the way a good fantasy should. It doesn't help that most of the story consists of setup for later installments. Nothing of particular interest occurs regarding our young protagonist; there are only indications of what's to come. On the other hand, a future antagonist that receives some time in the spotlight goes through several ordeals by the end. I'm more intrigued by Jak's point of view than Simon's, even though he's a whiny brat.
The author's writing style needs to mature for the second novel to improve over the first. Right from the first chapter I was off-put and seriously questioning whether or not I should continue reading. They very first three paragraphs started with "The Guardian". I'm not a great writer, which is partially why I have such high respect for authors, but when learning how to write essays it was beaten over my head that you should not start consecutive paragraphs with the same word, much less the same phrase.
This type of repetition was plentiful throughout. Also in the first chapter this character called The Guardian was seen to be holding back, choking back, or letting flow tears from his eyes a grand total of six times. In one chapter. Across the length of just a few pages. Don't even get me started on the number of times a character said something "caustically".
Still, there were glimmers of promise. The utilization of descriptive adjectives was reasonably well done. I could always vividly picture the locations and transpiring events. It wasn't enough to bump my rating a little higher, but it gives me hope that the second book in Portals, Passages & Pathways might be worth checking out if it gets released.
This book pulled me in a little deeper with each chapter until I was fully engrossed in the new world of Magnanthia by the end. Can't wait to see what comes next in this series as there is an interesting twist at the very end that left me wondering many things. If you like wizards, adventure, and world-building, then put this on your shelf.
This book was an exciting mash up of all my best loved fantasy novels. It had mystery, magic and mayhem; plenty of adventure and enough action to keep me glued to my Kindle.
I will admit that it took me a while to get into this book, but once I was fully immersed in the story nothing could draw me away. Maul painted a vivid picture of beautiful landscapes and a magical world that I could easily live in, even with the evil that lurked.
In the beginning a was a little distracted by the constant shift between present and past, and even though I understood what Maul was trying to show me with the flashbacks, I felt they could have been eased into the story in a different way. It was only really when Jak and Simon found themselves in Magnanthia that I started to enjoy the story and all the chaos that ensued.
I love that this book was dual POV. It gave me the chance to see into the mind of both the hero and the villain. And it was quite unique in the way that it allowed the reader to connect with the villain in a way I've never seen before. Most of the time, the hero is the MC and at some point in the story the villain is introduced. The reader never really gets to see how the villain got to be evil etc. and Maul gave his readers this insight. It gave the villain more heart and actually made me want to reach out to him.
I have to say that I enjoyed Jak's story more than Simon's. Perhaps it was because he seemed to have the harder choices, and he was led down a path that meant life as a Warlock, fighting for the wrong side, or death. Or perhaps it was the frightening creatures he had to face; that made my skin crawl. I just felt more for him than I did for Simon.
This book was a fantastic start to what is sure to be a thrilling series. I look forward to reading more, and finding out how Jak and Simon will navigate their new lives. Readers of the Harry Potter franchise and similar reads will love this book.
This was an interesting start to a fantasy series. It seemed to be geared to young adults and had some interesting characters. The book definitely leaves you hanging at the end so you'll have to get additional books to see how things turn out. Every possible fantasy character is mentioned and used in this book. I liked it and want to see what else happens.
This young adult fantasy novel is about a young boy who suddenly finds himself in very strange circumstances.
Simon is your average nerdy tween. He is good friends with Jessica, his neighbor. With no prior warning, one day, Simon is invited to go on an overnight fishing trip with Jessica and her parents. Their destination is Lake Itasca in Minnesota, the headwaters of the Mississippi River.
Simon becomes more and more sure that Something Is Going On, and that he is the centerpiece of It, whatever it is. Eventually, a portal is opened to another world, and people come through looking for Simon. They come from a place called Magnanthia, and Simon must return with them, because he wears a very powerful ring called the Ring of Affinity.
Meantime, elsewhere, another portal to Earth is opened, and a young man named Jak is taken. He comes from a very rich family, and has become an arrogant little you-know-what. He is in a land called Bedlam, run by an evil person called Severn. Jak is forced into the Maze of Mayhem. Six young men go in, and only one survives. The winner's "prize" is to become an automatic warlock. Is Jak the survivor?
Simon learns that Bedlam and Magnanthia have been at war for many years. The final battle is coming, and things are not looking good for Magnanthia. Simon, and his ring, are a vital part of Magnanthia's hopes for survival. An added complication is that Simon was not supposed to be introduced to Magnanthia for another couple of years. A lot has been thrown at Simon all at once. Does Simon rise to the occasion, or give up and ask to go home?
First of a series, the author does a very good from start to finish, especially with the society building. It's easy to read, and teens will enjoy it.
First book of the series. To me it was a slow build (but it is the first book). The story is split between two characters. Looks to be one good and one bad. Some info is given on the world and info on the plot is given. The main Issue (of the world) for the characters looks to be happening in the next book.
There are more than the usual number of spelling and word usage errors, which interfered with comfortable reading. The evil opponents received almost equal time with the good guys, so much of the story was depressing. At times, this was more like a horror story than a fantasy. I didn't care for the main character's childish attitudes. I won't be reading more in the series.
Simon is an ordinary teen who is happy with his life. He sings in choir and he has an awesome best friend named Jessica. But the normal Simon learns something that changes his life forever when he goes on a camping trip with Jessica. On this trip, Simon learns about a different world called Magnanthia. To get to Magnanthia, you must travel by portal. Simon receives the Ring of Affinity to help become a new guardian who will help protect Magnanthia from harm.
This harm comes in the form of soul seers. These soul seers travelled to Earth and kidnapped a boy named Jak. They found Jak to be useful in the quest to defeat King Elderton. Jak, not really having a choice in the matter, quickly becomes obsessed with the magic and power he now holds.
Simon must help to prove that the guardians are innocent and Jak must prove himself to have enough power to join the army commanded by Bedlam's overlord.
At first, this book started off a bit slow. It was nice to learn more about Simon and his personality. This book didn't start off in a high fantasy world where you had no clue as to what was going on. The time period was also nice. You'd expect a fantasy novel to be set in the past or in a different world, but this book started on Earth in the present time.
I liked how the book was separated into two points of views. First, we had Simon who is the good guy, the hero. Then you have Jak who is the villain, but knowing his side of the story helped shape the book. You got to understand Jak's feelings and why he became one of the villains in the book. It's not like he just decided to travel to Magnanthia one day and become the overlord. He was forced to go to Magnanthia, he was kidnapped. It helped develop his personality and helped see more than his superficial attitude.
The writing style was nice. Maul allowed you to learn about Magnanthia at a gradual pace. He didn't throw you in and make you confused with all the different terms and magic. He eased you into it and it was quite easy to understand Magnanthia, unlike other high fantasy novels.
I was never overwhelmed with too much detail, but Maul created enough imagery that I could picture in my head what the new world looked like. The dialogue was nice and entertaining. The book wasn't too serious and had enough jokes to keep me both intrigued and entertained.
While the beginning did start off a bit slow, I never found myself skipping ahead. I wanted to know what was going on, but I was perfectly fine with reading some of the boring parts as these parts were important later on in the book.
This book kept me interested the whole time and I feel as if middle graders and teenagers will enjoy this book, as well as older people.
I can't wait to read the next book. The twist at the end makes me want to beg for more. Portals, Passages, & Pathways really took me on a ride and what a ride it was!
I received this book through Goodreads' First Reads in exchange for an honest review.I will start by saying, for an independently published book, this one is pretty impressive. The writing itself was, overall, well-done, with minor grammatical errors, and the world building was intense. The world set up for this book was crazy impressive. There is so much going on and the story is constantly changing. However, it didn't really feel like it went anywhere despite this. This book read more like a massive prequel than an actual novel. There was so much set up, but the plot never really got going. I don't really think much actually happened in the book. Maul just more or less set a bunch of things in place for the next book.Don't get me wrong, the whole Chronicles of Narnia/Lord of the Rings thing was cool and the ideas were there, but the story just didn't move along enough for me to really grab my attention. Plus, the story is split between following Simon and Jak, which works most of the time, but at times the information the reader learns overlaps between the two characters, making the text repetitive and unnecessarily long. I really don't think this book needed to be over 400 pages. Speaking of repetitive, the overuse of certain words and phrases (caustic, I never want to read any version of this word ever again) was really grating to me. Throughout the book, the author proved that he could actually write so I feel like he was capable of coming up with more variety in his word choice. I would recommend this book to people who value world building over plot and action. For me, the book felt like constant rising action without any actual climax or conclusion. But the ideas themselves were interesting. I think the second book is where the action is, but I don't know if I myself want to trudge back into Magnanthia after reading this one. Maul creates a cool fantasy world and sets a lot of things in motion, but there wasn't enough follow through in this book for me to really get into it.
******I was generously given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*******
3.5 Stars
This is a nicely fleshed out fantasy for the MG crowd. There are 2 different POVs, Simon and Jak. They are not the type of POVs that duel back and forth at a dizzying pace or have chapters where the speaker is hard to figure out until you check the chapter title or get so far into the chapter that you have to reread until it makes sense. I must admit, this book is rather slow to get rolling and the pace never really picked up for me BUT the story line is interesting enough to keep you turning pages. I did find myself secretly searching for the chapters about Jak, the antagonist. Seeing how this young, troubled, spoiled youth did not start out as an Evil Overlord made him much more intriguing to me. The fact that he was kidnapped by some nasty creatures, was dragged into a most unfriendly part of an unknown world, and made to endure some grievous trials and tribulations made me feel for him all the more and secretly wish to cuddle him and bring him back into the light. Seeing Jak's metamorphosis was much more interesting than reading about the struggles of a boy, Simon, that had every advantage and even seemed like things came a little too easily to him. The secondary characters were fun, I especially liked Domic and Sonica, and they really helped to reveal the entire plot in measures...even if those measures happened to be slow increments....VERY sloooow increments. I acquiesce, I am most assuredly not the target demographic here BUT I do have a young daughter who loves, loves, LOVES to read and this is a book I would read with her in a heartbeat. My only gripe is the pacing but otherwise this book is good, clean, Fantasy!
In the Land of Magnanthia (Portals, Passages & Pathways #1)by B.R. Maul
In the Land of Magnanthia (Portals, Passages & Pathways #1) by B.R. Maulwas a breath of fresh air. B.R. Maul’s storytelling was unique and exceptional. The characters are well developed. I love how the story is told from alternating perspectives because it helps you become so immersed in their world. You become a part of the story. You care about the outcome. There are not many authors who can write alternating perspectives well, but you won’t have that problem here. B.R. Maul does a brilliant job. The book is a little slow in the beginning but I feel it is necessary so you understand the importance of where the story is heading. The storyline was inventive and not the same old thing regurgitated.
Even though Jak was cast into the position of bad guy, Maul is able to make the reader care about his outcome. At least I felt that Jak had more hardships thrown at him and he dealt with them. I hope we find out why Jak is such an ass to begin with because for someone to be that much of a Jackass, something had to have happened to him in his lifetime to make him that way. I know he had problems with dad but I hope there is some kind of explanation.
Simon is such a great character as well. I hope something develops between Simon and Sonica. They would make such a cute couple.
In the Land of Magnanthia (Portals, Passages & Pathways #1)by B.R. Maul is a great fantasy, action, adventure story that any age would love to read. The book is a bit long for some (470 pages) however, there is never a time where the story is boring or uninteresting. There is always something going on. So don’t let the length scare you!
I received In The Land of Magnanthia from author B.R. Maul for free from Goodreads First Reads to review.
I rate this book 3.5 stars.
This book was the first in a series and it was a very interesting young adult fantasy. In the beginning, this novel felt more like the usual young adult modern genre but toward the middle became a fantasy book. I liked the combination of both of these books and the blend of these genres.
ITLOM was a mostly fast read but a times it did feel like it dragged. The only sections I didn't particularly care for were Simon's flashbacks to his childhood, even though they became more useful as a reference to the character's story-line.
Simon was an average bookish, shy student who had no plans to amount to much but enjoyed his close friendship with Jessica and being considered above average talent at singing. Once his world turns upside down, Simon's reactions and courage were adorable and made me like this character even more.
There were a host of side characters in this book including Jessica and her family that will make this series enjoyable as it continues. The world-building and fantasy elements were phenomenal and I can't wait to see how this series ends up.
As a fantasy story it is pretty good. When the kid from our world is taken to a magical world thru a portal without much warning or explanation other than it is for his safety, it is a bit strange he goes and goes along with the company of fantasy heroes he meets. The story really is just getting started in this book, and I would love to read the next one and see how it continues. It is well written and flows well. No, it isn't a book I fell into and couldn't put down, but I did enjoy it.
The story of Jak is also just getting started, and since we don't know much about him at all it isn't a story line I cared about. He isn't a well developed character, at least in the first book. But he is taken thru a portal to Bedlam and becomes a warlock. The land of Bedlam is much more interesting and developed than the Jak character.
Anyway, this could be the start of an epic adventure story, but it depends on character development of both stories. I am interested to read more, and I love the trees and the marmot, but I'm just hoping there is more character development for multiple characters.
I won a copy in a Goodreads giveaway. I was not paid for my review in any way and all opinions are my own.
*I was given a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review*
This book started kind of slow for me at first, but as I kept reading I found myself thinking of the the book and getting excited for when I could read it some more. The characters are well developed and this book just makes you want to keep coming back for more.
It begins in present day, which at first threw me off since I thought, "hey isn't this a fantasy book?" Once the characters go through the portals though, the fantasy world begins and the roller coaster ride continues!
I also enjoyed how this book was written. They writing style fit the story nicely. There was just enough dialog to keep you going and enough description to paint the picture in your mind, but not overwhelm you. I never found myself skipping over some parts just to get to "the good part." It was all good!
While I think teens and middle grade readers would very much enjoy this book, I, a almost 30 yr old woman, thoroughly enjoyed this book as well. It's a great tale and totally worth reading!
I received this book after winning a competition and had not read this author before. I loved the cover and couldn’t wait to start. It was a little hard to get into at the beginning, jumping between settings and I didn’t really like the flashbacks but I understand why they were needed. Magnanthia itself is beautifully described and the scenes there were my favourite. The plot shows a lot of promise for future instalments but I just got a little frustrated with the style of writing. It’s a bit awkward in places and I don’t think the ‘B’ word should need to be used, it definitely wasn’t needed to help establish Jak’s character. There are also a couple of typos i.e. wonder instead of wander, which would have been missed by spell check.
Overall it is a good read and I will look at the next one when it’s released.
3.5 out of 5 stars (bearing in mind I judge my five stars by Lord of the Rings)
This book opens with Peter, who is a Guardian, trying to protect a princess from two wizards. There has just been a war and Peter believes there is a traitor among the counsel of wizards. So he casts a spell to protect the princess and they disappear. Then we are taken to the planet earth and the present time and meet Simon and his dad and his across the road neighbors. We quickly learn that there is more to Simon than meets the eye and that he is destined for more greatness than he could have ever imagined.
This book has quite an intriguing opening that leaves you wanting to read on to discover what became of Peter and the princess and this strange land they are from. Since this is just the first book of probably many more to come, you are left with some unanswered questions. Overall though, it was an enjoyable read. I enjoyed being taken into the wonder of Magnanthia and the evil of Bedlam. Excited to see where book 2 takes us next!
I was pleasantly captivated in B. R. Maul’s tale of Portals, Passages, & Pathways (In the Land of Magnanthia) in which two teenagers cross into the magical land. One, the nerdy kid who’s in the school choir has, without his knowledge, been groomed to bear one of the guardian rings of affinity Simon was supposed to trained for two years, but a cracked portal meant things had to be moved up and so he was rushed through an underwater portal to avoid the evil enemy and has to come to term with well-meaning advisors who wish him wel, and home-sickness. Jak, a rich bratty kid taught by tutors and ignored by his family, is kidnaped into the same world and has to survive a dangerous maze. Only one of the seven entering the maze will survive to be given magic. In spite of being generic, and a bit awkward in spots, I found the tale fun. Review Printed in the Philadelphia Weekly Press
There is a lot to like in B.R. Maul's debut novel, In The Land Of Magnanthia. Maul has created an alternate world connected to our own through portals, much like C.S. Lewis' Narnia. The opening of these portals allows a pair of teens, Simon and Jak, to be taken to Magnanthia and thrust into a war where both boys will play a major role. It reminds me of a lot of the fantasies I had back when I was playing Dungeons and Dragons as a teen. Although the book started a bit slow with a lot of background and some awkward early scenes and dialogue, by the time the boys arrive in Magnanthia the book improves and starts to move at a good pace. The two teens start off as somewhat cliched characters, with Jak in particular wandering into cartoonish angry/evil teen territory at times. As a first novel, it shows potential and hopefully the series will improve as it goes forward.
Starts off with a bang and keeps on going. Action packed from the very start and you keep reading until you get to the end. It’s a highly enjoyable fantasy that anybody would enjoy immensely. Well written characters and your never quite sure who’s up to what, and if there is anything to gain by it. But it’s a really good read you’ll like. Peter and the princess, Simon and Jessica, and then you wonder if they all combine in the tapestry of a really brilliant design. Even the wizards were very intriguing and you weren’t quite sure which one was the good one. A definite must read if you like fantasy mixed in with a little contemporary and a whole lot of well-placed action. Pick up a copy. You won’t be sorry.
This is the debut book for B.R. Maul. It's the first in a series and I can't wait for the second one. It's a story of magic and epic quests, but it's from the good guy and the bad guy's POV. Simon and Jak are two boys who have taken two very different paths. Simon takes the path of light and Jak takes the path of darkness. I felt sadness for Jak because I wonder if he would have made a different choice with a different upbringing. Is it really is fault he became evil? Simon was your typical hero. He's very unsure of himself and he has been thrust into a situation where he has no idea what to do or even where he is. If you like fantasy with magical creatures, wizards, warlocks, and epic quests then I recommend this book.
I recently read a captivating fantasy novel where a portal to another world opens near a small town in Minnesota, forever altering the lives of two boys. Simon embarks on a journey to save the world, while Jak faces a darker path. The book’s strength lies in its vivid descriptions and dynamic characters, making it a compelling read. This award-winning story, now in a new edition, immerses readers in a world of adventure and mystery. Author B. R. Maul, hailing from Minnesota, skillfully blends imagination with engaging storytelling, making this book a modern-day classic and an excellent gift choice.
I won this book in a contest on goodreads. I love these types of books, but must say I have had a terrible time getting into this one in particular. I felt it took way to long focusing on the back story of each character taking almost half the book doing so. I almost gave up on the book but decided I had invested to much time reading it already. Finally it got to the fantasy part of the story, which kept me wanting to finish the book to find out what would happen next. I am not sure though that I would read a sequel to this story.
This is a fast-paced, easy-to-read book. It is definitely a page turner, keeping you more and more interested. The characters are very different, and keep you wondering what's going to happen next in their relationships, and what danger will be lurking around the next corner.
Very interesting book, recommended. The first 40% of the book are a bit boring, because there are no major facts going on in the history, but as long as you pass through this part is becames more interisting and mysterious.
