Until We Meet Again

Rate this book
Bruce “Bones” Lanning and Emil Ettinger had a decent roommate arrangement at Roosevelt College—other than Bones leaving his dirty socks lying around—so they agree to share the same space again. Their relationship has always been ridiculous banter and competitive streaks, and they assume this year will be the same.

So why are they suddenly enjoying nights holed up in their room together?

Bones can’t figure out what’s changed, why he likes being around Emil so much and why he’s suddenly falling asleep in Emil’s bed. And as far as Emil knows, Bones is straight, so why does he seem jealous when Emil arranges a random hookup, then asks all sorts of questions about what it’s like to kiss another guy?

To put an end to his roommate’s endless queries, Emil kisses Bones, convinced he’s just goofing around. But one encounter leads to another, until Emil begins seeing Bones in a different light. Underneath the clueless, carefree facade lies a deeper emotional underpinning that allows Emil to become more vulnerable too—and maybe even admit that spending time with his roommate is the best part of his day.

Still, Emil isn’t about to become another jock’s experiment, so he makes it clear that their hookups are totally casual. Until they’re not.

This was ok. I wanted something more lighthearted after my last read, and in that regard it delivered.

I wish I enjoyed it more, though. I liked the e-mails and Bones figuring out things about himself. But that's about it. I've struggled with this author's writing in her latest books, and this one is no different. It's kind of simplistic and generic, most dialogues sound stilted and the relationship development didn't work for me. Add to that

I enjoyed the previous book, XOXO, more. At least in that one I found the relationship between the MCs sweet and endearing. Here I felt nothing.

Until We Meet Again is a college-themed, roommates-to-lovers, bi-awakening M/M romance, between a jock and a dancer. It’s a new-adult, low-angst read, that delivers with lovely characters, lots of sweetness and steamy sexual discovery.

Bruce (or Bones to his friends) is a big, affable football player, quietly still grieving the loss of his older brother and feeling the weight of familial expectations. He’s popular with the ladies on campus but has never found a true connection with any of them. But he has been feeling something for his roommate Emil—something new and scary and potentially life-changing.

Emil is a dancer and a member of the college marching band. He’s out and proud and has a good dose of self-confidence and seems completely at ease with who he is and what he wants in life. He enjoys rooming with Bones, because although they are polar opposites in every way, they share a competitive dynamic and boat loads of banter that they play off as discord but both secretly enjoy.

As their friendship grows in the new semester, Bones begins to open up about his feelings and the personal changes he’s experiencing, leading to some exploratory boy-on-boy kisses in their dorm room, that start as an experiment of sorts and develop over time into a simmering want that neither Bones or Emil can ignore for too long.

These guys were very sweet together and there was little to no angst between them as their relationship shifted into something neither of them saw coming. Bones’s bi-awakening was mostly drama-free, as far as these things usually go in new adult stories with characters discovering their queer identity for the first time. This was due, in most part, to the fact that Henry (the gay star quarterback from book one) paved the way with acceptance and support in his story, making for an easier coming out for Bones when the time was right for him to share his new truth with his friends.

I enjoyed this story and read it pretty darn quickly, but I’ll be honest, I did prefer book one (XOXO), in terms of both romance and lead characters, which I found much more compelling and emotionally charged, making it a more special story to me.

There wasn’t really anything set-up here, in terms of stepping off points for a future book in the series, but I’d happily read more about these Roosevelt College men and their friends, should another sequel be on the cards.

Until We Meet Again is a sweet slow-burn friends-to-lovers romance between roommates Emil and Bones. I enjoyed the chemistry between Emil and Bones in XOXO and was looking forward to their story, which did not disappoint.

They have amazing chemistry with one another that includes hilarious banter while offering continuous support and patience. Bones is a much more thought-provoking character than I was anticipating. I enjoyed getting his backstory, which is heartbreaking because it answered so many questions regarding his personality and overall persona.

Emil is such a fun, confident ray of sunshine. He is an amazingly supportive friend to Lark and an even better friend to Bones as they navigate their changing dynamic, which was so darn cute and funny to see everything develop.

Overall this story was very sweet, wholesome, and moving. I enjoyed getting to see these characters again and loved the finale of the story, it put a huge smile on my face.

I liked this book better than the first one, which I DNF.

Emil, the dancer, and Bones (Bruce), the jock, are roommates and love to get on each other's nerves. Apparently, that's called extended foreplay.

Bones realizes he's bi and demiromantic, and really puts himself out there, but Emil keeps rejecting him because he doesn't want to get hurt.

The MCs are college boys, so there are multiple scenes of them hanging out with friends, partying, studying, etc. I was a little bored, tbh.

Bones and Emil seem so young, but maybe I'm just old. Lol

There's a grand gesture towards the end, some family conflict that's resolved when Bones's parents have an epiphany (why then and there?), and a HFN.

Cute but nothing special.

Well, that’s light and fun. It’s a feel good kind of book you’ll read in one sitting. Not much conflicts and almost too good to be true. This would have never worked if the characters aren’t likeable, but unfortunately they are. Bones is like a big baby and Emil is the kind of friend I would really love to have. Loved it!

This was so sweet and cute! I loved the banter and competition between Emil and Bones. They fit together so well. Bones coming into his own was extremely good. I felt for him with the loss of his brother and how his parents couldn’t see him as his own person. The emails to his brother were heartbreaking but I loved how he still communicated that way with him.

I definitely enjoyed this though and it was such a nice story with a great bromance turned real romance!

Honestly I’m surprised Christina Lee wrote this. It was too short, the pacing was stuttering, and it felt very basic.

I’m not even remotely convinced Emil actually wanted to be with Bones. The romance was severely lacking.

Everything made me roll my eyes. I don’t know…it just felt like this was an outline or first draft waiting to be fleshed out.

This book is about Emil and Bones whom we met in XOXO, the first book of the Roosevelt College series. In the last book, Emil and Bones's relationship was more like roommates who liked competing every time and the snarky banter between them, which I enjoyed very much and I am very glad the author decided to write their story.

“𝐈’𝐦 𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐲 𝐢𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞. 𝐈 𝐧𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐟𝐞𝐥𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐛𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞.”
“𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐲?”
“𝐋𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞’𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐦𝐲 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐨𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧, 𝐤𝐢𝐬𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮. 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐢𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐟𝐮𝐜𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐦𝐲 𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧.”

Emil and Bones keep their current living arrangements the same for the next year of college because they happen to enjoy each other's company even though there is still lots of snarky banter and competitiveness between them, they like to be around each other. But this year Emil sees Bones in a very different light when he comes to know more about him. Bones is a big, clueless jock with the energy of a golden retriever but there is more to him, he doesn't want to be a disappointment to his parents who had always compared him to his big brother, so he tries hard to impress everyone. But now as he is coming to terms with his sexuality and growing up, he wants to live his life for himself and his journey was amazing, I loved he was never afraid or freaked out about what he discovered and wanted to share with people.

Emil and Bones had amazing chemistry, it was so swoony at times as well as hot, I enjoyed them so much. The grand gesture scene was all kind of cute which put a giddy smile on my face. I devoured this book and most of the time I was smiling while reading it. Emil and Bones were just perfect for each other and I highly recommend you to start this series because both the books were so amazingly written. Hoping to see more stories of other characters in this universe but only time will tell.

"Emil leaned forward and placed his hand against my neck. Our eyes met as he waited for me to make the first move. Could I do this? Two deep breaths, and then I closed the distance between us and brushed my lips against his. But it didn’t feel like enough to test this whole kissing thing out, so I did it again and again, pressing harder each time. His lips were smooth and soft, and he tasted like the cherry ChapStick he liked to wear. When I heard the faint groan in the back of his throat, I crushed our mouths together."

Until We Meet Again was such a cute read! It's the second book in Christina Lee's Roosevelt College series and whilst it can certainly be read as a standalone, I think in retrospect I would have preferred to get Emil and Bones' backstory in XOXO, which is Lark and Henry's story.

This has so many of my fave 'light and fluffy' tropes in it, so if you're a fan of these too, you'll enjoy Until We Meet Again:

That was incredibly sweet! College roommates, jock x musician/dancer, demi-awakening and mental health rep including dealing with grief after the loss of a loved one.

Bones is a football linebacker but has always felt overshadowed by the memory of his older brother who passed away whilst in the military. To cover his feelings of loss he acts the idiot; flirting and being silly. He loves nothing more than winding up his roommate, musician and dancer Emil, but after falling asleep in Emil’s bed after watching tv with him, he starts to realise that he might be catching feelings.

This book was incredibly sweet, although I did want to shake Emil - he is determined to keep Bones at arm’s length as he is worried about Bones breaking his heart. Also, if you have read the author’s previous novel in the series XOXO, there is a lot of cameos from Lark and Henry.

If you are a fan of low-angst, friends-to-lovers, new adult college romance, this is a great little read! Plus the cover is absolutely gorgeous 🤷🏻‍♀️ This book is available on the 24th Jan. Thank you to @gay.romance.reviews for a free eARC of this book. All opinions are my own.

We are back to the Roosevelt Collage, this time to discover what happens between Emil and Bones, whom we already saw in the first book and who, this year, decide be roommates once again.

The first book began to explore the bond between the group of athletes and the group of musicians and dancers through the emerging relationship of Lark and Henry. This, coupled with the fact that Emil (Lark's friend) and Bones (Henry's friend) were roommates despite not getting along, increasingly unified the group.

This time, the story begins with Bones sharing what happened with his older brother. At the same time, we witness his strange and confusing feelings for Emil, with whom he will be sharing a room once again.

Their story starts without much preamble, which is appreciated because it's pretty short (about 100 pages less than the first book), and everything unfolds without wasting time on unnecessary details. For those looking for a more laid-back story, with a slower pace and a more introspective relationship development, this might not be the right time to read this book for you. But if you're looking for something lighter, with an appropriate pace that doesn't feel too slow or rushed, and a relationship that doesn't beat around the bush excessively, this will be a fantastic option.

Emil and Bones get along better and better, and that, combined with Bones' confusion, leads them to experiment a bit together. I must say that I loved the first kiss, as it was intense and full of tension. From then on, they go form having something casual and pausing when things get serious and they're not ready for it.

There isn't as much secondary plot as there was in XOXO, and it makes sense because with 100 fewer pages, there wasn't much space to include much more. It wasn’t necessary either, to be honest: Bones has a bit of family drama that complements the romance, making the story feel complete and solid. But the main focus is on Emil and Bones, and that’s perfectly enough for an enjoyable story.

I don't know if the author plans to continue writing books in this series, but I hope so, and I believe some of Henry and Bones' friends could also give us great stories.

audio review
Two new to me narrarators and enjoyed both of them and the energy they brought to Emil & Bones. Enjoyed they also felt like they were the age of the characters they were unlike in some audios, and they feel older, which takes we away from the listen.

The follow-up to XOXO with Emil and Bones is the close friends of Lark & Henry, the previous books MCs. What can you really say but Bones is so much better of a man than he was previously betrayed. He shows he can learn and grow to be a better person. Emil is his beautiful, snarky, understanding self in helping Bones in this journey of self-discovery.
Together, they have a beautiful banter that shows even as they get older, they will be able to last because they just are with one another. Thank you, Christina, for writing a college age romance where the characters feel genuine to their age and, yes, make mistakes, but grow from them. Hope to see future couples from this universe, but only time will tell.

I absolutely adored this couple, especially Bones...he was such a great character. He has grown so much since the first book, there was almost boyish innocence about him after getting to know him and his struggles. Emil was strong and steady for him which made this story that much better. The relationship development was super sweet and fun, with spicy bits thrown in making it the perfect combo. Toward the ending of this book there was a scene that was so touching it made me cry, I loved these two!!! I would 100% recommend. Can't wait for the next one in this series.

Julia said I needed to read a gay book that wasn’t hockey so this one is for you bestie 🫶
I really liked the first book in this series and I finished an audiobook mid-drive so I had to pick something quick off hoopla before I crashed my car so this was what I ended up with. It was so damn short and honestly nonsensical. The author just slapped demiromantic on the character to excuse the fact that they’d lived together for A YEAR and he just out of nowhere caught feelings. Like…huh? It was so rushed. I understand that we got a brief look at their relationship in the first book but I’d rather it have been in parallel so we got to see more of their dynamic prior. Because we literally start the book with them coming back from break and Bones already kind of pining and I’m like where is the building? Where is the tension? It should’ve been twice as long and given us at least part of their first year. Or at all tried to explain why they hated each other but agreed to live together again. Like what did they have in common? What shared goals or interests did they have? I just didn’t understand why they’d want to be together. Which is a damn shame bc the author did such a great job of answering those questions in the first book. Emil was also criminally underdeveloped. I know nothing about him. Bones gets all the backstory and growth and Emil just gets “my parents are supportive” and that’s it. Bones figures out his career path and Emil’s deciding of his is literally never brought back up after chapter 2. Also…he literally gets off from kissing you for 5 seconds and you still think he’s straight? Girl please. And now my real axe to grind…I don’t think this author has ever watched a football game in her life. I don’t think she realizes that o-line and d-line have different players and schemes. The way she described what a “linebacker” does had me straight up cackling. Like honey…read the Wikipedia page at least. It’s not that hard. Also she does not understand that college football is set up entirely different from high school football. Sorry. I’m in my dude bro era and this shit irks me so bad now. It kept me awake while I finished my late drive to Omaha and my early drive to Ames. Otherwise…I’m unmoved. Damn I think this is longer than the book itself. I have two other reviews I need to type but I liked those books and that’s so much harder. Uhg. P.S. demiromantic ppl are real and valid but there’s no exploration of it in this book. It’s just an excuse for lazy story writing. God I’m aggravated.

My feelings are still the same for the first book XOXO of the series.

Emil and Bones were cute and the chemistry decided to show up sometimes. The dancer and the jock are roommates and of course from pranks, jokes and getting into each other's nerves something good came out of it.

My problem? The foreplay decided to stay the entire duration of the book. We get it they are in college but the book had WAY to many scenes where they were doing partying, studying, hanging out with friends... I wanted more of Emil and Bones alone. Also, the whole epiphany his parents get at the end meh. It really felt to be forced because Emil kept them honest about Bones.

I do have to say that every time we got the read Bones email to his brother, made me cry every single time. All cute but nothing special.

I would call this a novella or a very long epilogue than it's own stand alone story. I enjoyed it, but compared to the first of the Roosevelt College series it felt shallow in content and being under 200 pages really just leaned into that novella feeling. The characters felt less rounded out as well but once again, I blame that more so on the length of this - it's hard to really get to know a character in approx. 170 pages.

Until We Meet Again was such a sweet and swoony read!

Bones had some true golden retriever energy and he had more layers to his character than I initially expected. I really adored both Bones and Emil, they had a lot of chemistry and I enjoyed their slow burn romance. I smiled so much while reading - they just had so many cute moments together!

I liked the way Bones’ journey was written - he learnt a lot about himself and really grew through the story. He had a lot of things going on, and I felt like the story was mostly about him, while Emil didn’t quite get the space to shine that he deserved. I would have loved to get to know him a little bit more.

Bones’ past and the loss of his brother added some emotional depth to the story, and the ending definitely made me cry. There wasn’t really any angst to the story though, there were some bumps along the way, but nothing major.

Overall, Until We Meet Again was a sweet and swoony story, and I loved the demi rep! This book is a great match if you’re looking for something sweet with a little banter and competitive characters that are absolutely perfect for each other.

I did not read XOXO so I cannot compare this to book 1 in any way. I did not feel like I was missing too much as the author and characters do a good job of summarizing what happened enough that this can be read as a standalone.

This book focuses a lot on Bones and the feelings he is going through. His brother was killed during active duty and he and his family are still grieving in their own ways over this, and he is also going through a bi-awakening (which he realizes throughout the book).

Emil has been hurt by jocks before and has no interest in being a test subject for a baby-bi only to get his heart broken again, but can’t seem to stay away. This is where the (minimal) angst comes from. Once they figure everything out they are cute together as a couple.

I received an advanced copy from GRR in exchange for my honest review.

Until We Met Again was such a gorgeous story about growing through grief, discovering yourself, and falling in love for the first time. There was so much beauty in this story. And a hell of a lot of great banter and competition. I would read so much more about Emil and Bones and their love. They were so careful with each other at first until… they weren’t. There hookups turned more and Bones def fell first and harder, because Emil wouldn’t let himself. Ugh SO CUTE!!

We met Bones and Emil in the first book of this series: Bones is Henry's friend and teammate, Emil is a dancer and a musician and he was Lark's first friend at Roosevelt College.
Bones and Emil rivalry and banter were awesome from the start and a lot of us readers begged the author for their own story.

I did not expect Bones' grief and his difficult family situation, all his background story was very well written, just like his bisexual and demiromantic awakening.
Bones and Emil's rivalry/friendship/romance was well developed and I'm glad there was no miscommunication between them, apart from the obvious difficulties to sort out their feelings.

I would have liked more romance, though, their happy ending seemed a little bit rushed.

Overall, a very good story of young love, I recommend to read it.

This was a very sweet easy read. It took me a long time to warm up to Emil, but Bones won my heart from the very beginning! Some context clues make me think this might not be the case had I read the first book, but I was definitely not lost jumping straight in with book two. While overall this was mainly cute, sweet, and comfy, there were quite a few moments that packed an emotional punch. It hit all my emotions at different times. If you like fluffy college reads with some opposites attracts, this is definitely a good one to pick up.

I usually like the authors' books and stories but this didn't do it for me. I knew it was NA going in so I didn't have high expectations of plot or smut, but it just fell short for me.

Bones was very sweet and I liked his journey of discovery, but I felt like Emil didn't deserve him at all. The resolution was rushed and I didn't feel like Emil was in the least in love with Bones.

I know it's supposed to be NA and the characters are younger, but this felt very weird, like what a Gen X would imagine Gen Z would behave, which is so unrealistic it's not even funny.

Meh.
