To be enjoyed after the original My Granny Writes Erotica book.
Betty Berry, a 65-year-old grandmother, is struggling to come to terms with her new, unexpected career as a famous rumpy-pumpy novelist.
After being banned from her country club, Betty misses her respectable reputation. When she finds her elderly mother-in-law with nipple clamps dangling from her earlobes, the suburban housewife realises she’s a corrupting influence and hangs up her pen.
However, the demands of her greedy family force Betty to sell the film rights to her novel – on one condition: she has no part in the creation of such revolting cinematic filth.
But things don't go to plan and once again Betty finds herself thrown into the centre of an outrageous hanky-panky scandal.
Rosen is a British bestselling author, who writes fiction for children and adults.
She was born in Cornwall and grew up on Restronguet Creek. She studied Experimental Psychology at St Catherine's College, Oxford, before moving back to the West Country. She now lives on the south coast of Devon with two imaginary cats, fantasising about getting a real one.
In 2011 Rosen was an aspiring author. Writing was a hobby. The following January sales of her books on Kindle took off, and by October she has sold 27,000 copies and her total download count exceeds 220,000. She now has three books in print: Pompomberry House, Seesaw and The Troll Trap, as well as many digital titles.
Rosen writes in a variety of genres with a strong leaning towards comedy. She has also dabbled with psychological fiction and mystery writing.
She loves wild swimming, mountain biking, interesting boots, quiffs, 'sampling' chocolate and cooking tasty treats. She dislikes house spiders, doing laundry and people putting costumes on their cats.
First off, I wrote this book, so feel free to treat my five star review with scepticism.
This book is about Betty Berry, a grandmother who accidentally found herself embarking on a career as an erotic novelist. The first book describes how such an occurrence came about. This sequel deals with what happens next.
My Granny Writes Erotica 2 posed an interesting challenge. The original story was intended to be a standalone tale. However, one criticism kept getting raised - it was too short.
This meant taking a story with a tidy conclusion and destroying the status quo, just when my heroine started to get her life back in order - Betty, I do apologise.
However, once I got stuck into the story, it felt as though it had always been my intention to write a sequel and I loved being reunited with colourful characters such as Scarlett, lady of the night and Betty's cantankerous mother-in-law, Muriel.
I enjoyed reading the first book for this a lot, so much so that it made my top five reads list for 2013 and when I learned of a planned sequel I was eager to give it a read. It's often difficult to capture the magic of the first book in a sequel and move it on, but thankfully the author manages to do just this and I'm happy to say that this is another fantastic read.
The story continues from the first book, but she Betty (our erotica writing granny) has new problems to solve, most improtant of which is her tarnished reputation. In the first book the humour primarily came from her innocence and discovering some of the extreme types of sex games and toys that makes certain types of erotica popular. That humour is still there but it builds on the more characterful interaction within the story.
As with most good comedy there is a serious streak running through the story, in the first book it was about Betty coming to terms with the changes in her life, with this one it's more about her coming to terms with who she is and as such it does manage at times to be quite moving, yet also making you laugh out loud - quite often in the same sentence.
While Betty is most certainly the star of the show, she's not alone. There's some new people to meet, but Muriel (the mother-in-law) is as great (and funny) here as she was in the first book. As I'm sure you have guessed by now I enjoyed reading this a lot and if you haven't read the first one yet then I recommend that you do so and then immediately read this one!
This is the sequel to My Granny Writes Erotica, where granny, Betty Berry, writes an extremely successful erotica novel. Betty is a middle class housewife who had to write the book as she's down on money, having kicked her errant husband out.
In this installment, Betty has to face up to being famous and also being kicked out of the country club, her "friends" having rejected her new-found notoriety.
As with the first story, whatever Betty does innocently, bites her in the bum (pun intended). Now Betty's back on the market, she dabbles with a bit of romance, rather than rumpy pumpy, but her reputation precedes her.
I re-read the first story and went straight into this and I think it is better to have read the first story. Certainly if you smiled at the first one, you'll enjoy this one. I finished it with my mouth aching from smiling so much. Yes, the story can get a bit juvenile at times and some things you can see coming a mile off and that is part of the fun. My eyebrows even got a workout in these bits as my eyes got wider and wider, waiting for Betty to realise what she's got into.
After reading the initial My Granny Writes Erotica and really enjoying it, I was looking forward to reading MGWE 2. I thought it would be fun to see how Betty was faring after her initial meanderings into self-published porn and the fame it had following it's 'going viral'. I wasn't disappointed and had quite a few giggles along the way. Some of the unfortunate mishaps that Betty experienced were a little predictable, but even so, were so well woven into the story that they remained funny - this being due to Rosen Trevithick's marvelous story-telling capabilities. The other thing I liked about these books was that they were lighthearted and not too long, so were a welcome change from the serious ones I'd been reading previously. I will definitely be reading more of her books
After enjoying the first slice so much last night, in a little under three hours I devoured the 158 pages. It does have to be read after the first, it really would struggle to be a stand alone book. We join Betty three years down the line, her book selling well, someone has 'outed' her to the press and suddenly she is pursued by an eager reporter, has an agent pushing for her to sell the movie rights and write more of Ricardo Haberdasher, still has her Mother-In-Law living with her extoling her sardonic opinions, and has employed Scarlet [her ex-husbands prostitute and her 'kinky oracle'] as her personal assistant.
Horror of horrors, the straight starched leader of her literary circle is now Lady President of the Country Club and she revokes Betty's membership for bringing down the standards. This is a straw too far for Betty who in classic Hiacynth Bucket style lives for her proprietous status and standing within her classy community. Attempts in raising her profile to accepted levels are thwarted, scuppered and hilariously fail through misunderstanding, circumstances and down right misfortune. Assumption are made by acquaintances and strangers alike that someone who write a 'rumpy-pumpy' book is fully conversant with all aspects of every kink, fetish and its language.
Sometimes you can be the calamity that is to fall but this does not detract from the enjoyment, and sometimes you are thrown a curve that equally makes you laugh. As communicative creatures we are not that good at communicating properly, fully or understanding correctly.
Not quite as sharp or quick paced as the first, but when fame, a generalised conception of a dumpy-lumpy author, and the urgent needs/envy of agents/fans gather their own pace you do feel for Betty.
This is the follow up to the first My Granny Writes Erotica and continues where it left off, with Betty achieving her publishing deal. Betty’s erotic novel “Ricardo Haberdasher” is a resounding success and film rights are in the offing, with the result that her life is about to change completely, not necessarily in a way that Betty wants, however. She wants just to be respectable, ladylike “Betty” and not “Figgy Brown” author of erotica.
Like the first book, this read is Fun with a capital F, although not necessarily of the clean kind, being stuffed full of sex toys, fetish clothing and innuendo. It is rude, crude and smutty and very wittily written. I love the way Betty tries her hardest to regain her position in respectable society, in particular she wants her membership of the Country Club reinstated after she was ousted as being “not the sort of person we want”. Unfortunately, despite her best efforts, she just seems to get it wrong every time with extremely funny results. Similarly, I really enjoyed the love/hate relationship she has with Muriel. It is definitely not for the easily shocked, but is a great, fun read that will leave you smiling. Thanks to the author for sending me a paperback copy.
This follow up from the 1st novella was such a great idea & certainly didn't disappoint, it's full of fun & will have you laughing out load! I would so recommend these novellas to anyone who loves an easy feel good read with a cheeky story line :D
