The Vampire Hunter Michele Hauf
Review from Jeannie Zelos Book reviews.
I was thinking how lucky I'd been recently in my selection of books for review, with several four and five star ones in a row, then like a kind of book karma I’ve had a run of ones that, while good books in themselves, just aren't ones I’ve enjoyed for various reasons :( This was one such, its a well written book, just not one that held my attention with either plot or characters.
I've read and enjoyed Michele's work before so was expecting to like this novel. It didn't work as well as I expected for me though. Maybe because one of the lead characters is human? I'm not really sure exactly what the problem was, maybe its just a series of minor things rather than one major one that sticks out? It's just that usually when I’m engrossed in a book I want to stick with it til its finished, and can't put it down. With this one however I kept putting it down, switching to other books and coming back to it. At one point I even had to go back to the start as I’d forgotten so much of what was important, and that almost never happens...anyway, finally got through it. Its Michele's usual excellent writing of course but the actual plot felt a bit contrived for me, and though the love story between vampire hunter Kas and witch Zoe was sweet that was it – I didn't feel great passion, strong emotion – all the things I need. I felt for an intelligent witch Zoe was incredibly naïve about the dust she'd been making, and would have looked further into what effects it had, especially once the stories were circulating about the recent problems. Kas, experienced hunter that he was, should have picked up the source far sooner. Of course then we wouldn't have the book :) so the elements were necessary, but I felt they could have been handled differently and made the whole thing more believable. It was an OK read, fine to pass a few hours, but not one I’d re read. As always though this is purely my view, and if you want a simple, paranormal love story this could well be the read for you.
Stars: 2.5 – it was well written and edited of course, but just didn't work for me.

Witches they do have that certain extra weirdness about them, loved how fairytown was bought into this novel, i know there are frequent visitors to it from other novels.... But i for one would not like to wonder into that world! Lol Felt also that this one was for a much younger generation, do not know why that is, never felt like that before when reading books by Michele... strange feeling.

This took me a while to get in to, which I was surprised by as it's a Michele Hauf book. It just ran at a slower pace, maybe because the main man is human.

Zoe is a witch and is a kind hearted and romantic and can turn on the sexy when wanted!

Kas is a vampire hunter, he is guarded and is a on a mission hunting someone making a dangerous drug that sends vamps mad!

They meet by accident and feel a pull to each other. I said earlier it's a slower pace, and there relationship develops the same way over days still but slower, they get to know each other and go on a date!

It isn't a soul mate insta love story, they are both keeping something back that could destroy there blossoming relationship.

I really liked how they were with each other, they were very realistic characters (other than being a witch!) and displayed emotions well and true to life.

We are introduced to other characters that will be getting there own book.

Good story and characters and amazing writing as normal by Michele Hauf.

A good read 3.75 stars.

REVIEW:
Kaz & Zoe have a very sweet relationship only one problem is that at the moment they are working on the opposite side of a very big problem for the vampires. But neither truly knows the depth of the Magic Dust problem until it is almost too late. Their only chance of winning this war is to work together no matter how difficult it may be.

This was a good story. I really like this world that Michele has created. Vampires, Fairies and Hunters oh my. I love how Michele throws in characters from other books in to all of her books. It is fun to get a glance at your past favorite characters. Of which one of mine made a cameo in The Vampire Hunters. :)

Kasper 'Kaz' Rothstein: street kid... saw vampire kill... rescued by the Knights... invited to join them...
now an adult...

Zoë Guillebeaux: witch... not confident in abilities... father disavowed as a warlock, as did molecular magic ? , so she has lived under that stigma, and hasn't seen father in a long time; has a vampire friend hooked on magic dust, so made what she thought was an antidote... but in fact was an even more powerful drug to vampires... and a vampire is exploiting her innocence...

Kaz out to locate source of the Magic Dust, at the same time as he finds himself courting Zoe - who saw him fight a vampire, who he kissed, who healed him, etc... eventually they figure out what's going on, and jointly end it....

The Vampire Hunter

Zoe, who is a witch, accidentally sees a man in an alley fighting against 4 other men. Unbeknownst to her the man, Kaz, is a vampire hunter and those were not men, but vampires. When it is all over, he kisses her, and that is where this love story, mixed in with killing vampires and seeking answers, progresses to forgiveness, but not forgetting.

Good read

As always this author pulls you into this paranormal world with characters who are deliciously dark. Enjoyed catching up with previous characters as well as the romance of this couple.

A sweet and flirty romance in an intriguing paranormal world!

As a Knight for the Order of the Stake, Kaspar’s sole mission is to rid the world of vampires and protect the human population. He has recently lost two of his friends thanks to a drug called Magic Dust that has turned vampires into bloodthirsty addicts in the streets of Paris and has sworn to seek vengeance for the horrific murders. While hunting vampires one night, he encounters Zoë, a beautiful witch who steals his heart, along with one of his stakes. Kaz knows he should walk away from Zoë, but the attraction to her is too hard to ignore and soon the two are put to the test when they join forces to save the city while trying to keep their distance and secrets from each other.

The Vampire Hunter is my second book by Michele Hauf and I must say I love the world building this author creates in her books. She weaves an intriguing tale of various supernaturals in the human world with new a new spin on the usual mythology. While I enjoyed the new world I was introduced to, I feel the plot was a little slow paced for me in this installment.

I would say Kaz is definitely grew up to be an alpha with the help of the Order of the Stake (being human and all), but like any good hero he has some insecurities and a big heart. I’m used to supernatural heroes in paranormal romance so a human hero was a surprise but it doesn’t make him any less of a leading man, it’s pretty refreshing. The author gives up glimpses into Kaz’s past before he became a Knight, which makes it easy to connect with his character. When it comes to the romance between him and Zoë it was too lovey-dovey for this girl, I was found wanting in the passion department. The romance was flirty and sweet, but there were no real fireworks for me. I think my feelings have a lot to do with the fact that their relationship developed quickly and with little tension, it was almost too easy but that might just be because I’ve been jaded by all the forbidden romances out there!

Zoë is introduced as a strong, intelligent and independent woman who happens to also be a powerful witch. I definitely felt there was more to her story and wished there would have been a bit more back story for her in order to connect with her completely. It struck me as odd that she was so naive when it came to the Magic Dust she was making and it’s effect on the vampires, especially after her conversations with Kaz. I think both him and Zoë were in denial of the situation at hand for a while due to their feelings, but am glad that they both worked together to right the wrongs and without sacrificing each other. Did Kaz forgive too easily? maybe, but this is where I was able to connect with the two characters most…when they open up and bare their souls to one another.

The Vampire Hunter is a sweet love story set in a captivating, dark world with supernaturals and plenty of mystery. Vampires can succumb to drug addiction, the fae are dangerous warriors and witches play by a different sets of rules while the secret society of the Knights of the Stake fight to protect the innocent in Ms. Hauf’s fascinating paranormal world. Fans of paranormal romance will enjoy the romance and urban fantasy junkies will appreciate the world building. I look forward to spending more time In the Company of Vampires (pun intended)!

Note: This story is part of a series but can easily be read as a stand-alone.

BOOK SYNOPSIS

A vampire hunter finds himself powerless to resist a bewitching stranger's dangerous magic in Michele Hauf's latest romance.

In all his years of battling the undead, Kaz has never seen bloodlust like this. And as a Knight of the Stake, it's up to him to find out who's responsible for the mayhem sweeping the streets of Paris and put a stop to it. Kaz's task becomes infinitely more complicated when a very attractive witch wants to help.

With her quirky charm and irresistibly kissable lips, Zo just feels right to Kaz, the way no mortal woman ever has before. But as a sworn enemy of the supernatural, can he really trust a witch? Especially one with dangerous secrets of her own?

My Thoughts

My first thoughts on starting this was how easily and quickly the story drew me in. The beginning starts with 16 year-old Kaz fighting off his first vampire and soon segues into an action packed alley brawl with 4 more years later.

As action packed as the story began once Kaz connected with Zoe things seem to lose their momentum, which was funny because a lot happens between the two together and seperately throughout the book.

After giving it much thought the main reason for the pacing seeming to feel off was the fact that the clues to what was going on did not gel for either Kaz or Zoe until way late in the game, it just took too long for the dots to connect that the particular case Kaz was working on and Zoe’s magical secret project had something in common.

Have you ever watched a game show, maybe Wheel Of Fortune, and gotten the clues while the contestants just shook their heads. It is so frustrating because no matter what you cannot reach them with the answers, it felt the same way throughout the investigation into who, what, when, where and the why of the addictive substance which was wreaking havoc on the Vampire community of Paris and which caused the death of two of Kaz’s friends.

I felt like the story kept circling around revealing the puzzle pieces to Kaz and Zoe until everything came together about three quarters of the way and fell into place like dominoes. It made room for the pairs romance to grow but it also felt like there could have been less going on and things would have gotten solved sooner.

The book still was enjoyable, the relationship between Kaz and Zoe grew naturally, the secrets in their pasts were resolved allowing each of them to finally feel free of the conflicting emotions each had dealt with alone for years and the villain was brought to justice in an ironic twist of fate allowing the investigation to close.

Not a bad way to escape reality just not something that felt totally cohesive from start to finish as would read in fits and starts because for some reason just could not find the rhythm needed to keep me from putting book down.

There have been numerous paranormal series released by Michele Hauf, and In the Company of Vampires is definitely one of the top when it comes to likable characters who find themselves in conflicted situations. In THE VAMPIRE HUNTER, two individuals have goals they want to accomplish but could end up working against one another when trying to achieve these objectives. Trust does not come easy for either of them since one is human and the other is a witch, but both feel an overwhelming need for them to be together. From the time these two first meet, their lives are never the same as desires continuously clash with obligations.

Although he was only a teenager, Kaspar Rothstein managed to kill his first vampire. This led to his joining a group who protect other humans from vampires, and they also make certain no one learns about the existence of these often wicked creatures. During an altercation between Kaz and several vamps, he protects a woman who really fascinates him. He secretly hopes to see her again soon, and one of her actions has him visiting her home shortly thereafter. He has never trusted witches before, yet there is just something about Zoë Guillebeaux that he cannot resist.

The latest assignment given to Kaz is to locate the origin of a drug and discover who is distributing it throughout Paris to vampires, as it causes them to harm humans and is very addictive. He would like to spend much time with Zoë, but he knows his current task could bring danger into her life and he always tries to protect the innocent. When Kaz comes to realize the witch is much more informed about what is going on than he ever imagined, he will have to make some decisive choices that will affect numerous beings living in Paris.

Originality is a word frequently associated with a book written by Michele Hauf, and THE VAMPIRE HUNTER has an innovative plot along with its many unique characters. I never know what type of being Ms. Hauf will dream up, as her paranormal creatures are often not what you would typically find in similar stories. In the Company of Vampires series, the faeries are especially unlike any I have ever read about as their capabilities are most distinctive. The vampires are a diverse group, from evil to thoughtful, and I enjoyed seeing what each one would do next. How Michele Hauf interweaves a terrible drug addiction into the world of vampires is very inventive, and some of the results are really frightening. While there are some serious moments in the story, her trademark for sprinkling in plenty of subtle humor is evident all through the book.

Kaz and Zoë are a fun couple to observe, as both have amusing thoughts come to mind that repeatedly caused me to smile. Also, neither has ever felt emotions like they are presently experiencing, and some of the conversations they share are moving because of the sincerity conveyed. Any intimacy between Kaz and Zoë is caring yet heated, and I could tell they had real feelings for each other, even before this idea came to them. Often couples created by Ms. Hauf are from different species, and these two regularly find their emotions in turmoil as problems are worked out. THE VAMPIRE HUNTER has danger, passion and lots of unique supernatural beings to keep you constantly intrigued.

Cute this second book In the Company of Vampires series by Michele Hauf, although I must say I didn't literally go crazy with it.

Maybe because there aren't big news in this world with paranormal creatures: vampires, witches, fairy anything but nice and humans, among which there is Kaz the protagonist who is a vampire hunter, he belongs to an Order dedicated to protecting humans.
Zoe is a witch, with the best intentions of this world, cute, an sweet, a real "natural" sexy enchantress, and without any spells, Kaz is irresistibly attracted by this woman. It is not just physical attraction between the two of them but perhaps the fact of not having to hide his dark side pushing Kaz to Zoe, who can understand the reality to which he belongs, since she also lives her life knowing about paranormal creatures.
I liked both of them, but for me wasn't a love "at first read", I began to appreciate them in the long run. Perhaps it contributed to make me less excited about reading the book that I already understood from the beginning what's going on from the start of their story. Then I missed a bit of pathos in following the events of their adventure.

Thanks to Netgalley and Harlequin for the book.

This book is part of Ms Haufs In The Company Of Vampires series and is a perfect example of paranormal romance . These books are full of strong vampires but also include other supernatural creatures which just adds to the fun.
The Vampire Hunter is a story about Kaz who although human is a slayer of those vampires who kill humans. It's something that Kaz is very good at and he has trained extensively in order to be a member of The Order of the Stake, a secret society dedicated to protecting humans. Living and working in Paris he has recently lost two friends who were attacked by a vampire high on a new drug called Magic Dust and has sworn to take down those responsible for manufacturing and distributing it.
Whilst patrolling the streets one night he meets a beautiful young woman and is instantly attracted to her. Realising that she has taken one of his stakes he tracks her down and to his dismay realises that Zoe is a witch. Kaz has never felt comfortable around witches but there is just something about Zoe that is so appealing that he's prepared to pursue their tentative friendship.
Unfortunately Zoe has a secret and it's not one that Kaz will like! Zoe has found a way using a combination of magic and fairy dust to give vampires a false high that could help cure their addictions but all is not as it seems. Zoe has been betrayed and doesn't realise it. Soon both vampires and the Fae will be out for her blood and the one man who could save her just may not want to! Harsh decisions will have to be made and Kaz and Zoe will both face danger.
Such an original and unique idea from this very talented author. We so often read of addicts but the idea of vampires being under the spell of something other than blood really works here. I wasn't sure at first if I would enjoy reading about a wholly human hero in a paranormal romance but it works really well. Kaz is a strong guy who takes his time to get to know Zoe and theirs is a sweet unhurried romance. Not that this book lacks passion , it's just that there's no "you are my mate and I beat my chest" !
Written really well and I loved the character Zoe's sense of humour. Although I have to admit I was most intrigued by the idea of a Faerie Mafia! It's a great series and set to feature other vampires who are mentioned in this book and I heartily recommend it

Kaz is a vampire hunter looking into a new drug which causes vampires to obsesses over anything sparkly and kill innocents just to get their jewels. He meets and falls for, healing witch Zoe, little knowing that she is manufacturing the drug in the mistaken belief that it is curing vampires.

The best thing about this is the story - Drug addict vampires, it has a feel of Tru Blood about it. I like the world created here - Faery overlaid with the underworld of Paris. We have a universe peopled with Faery, witches, vampires, werewolves, knights, angels, demons. It will appeal to fans of urban fantasy series like Lost Girl and True Blood.

What failed for me was the romance and the characters. Kaz didn't ring true. I didn't get into his head and found him two dimensional but also not sure that he acted in accordance with his character set up - His behaviour with Luc was too forgiving.

Zoe was OK as a heroine but again I just didn't feel her. whether it was the fact that she was verging on evil (warlock powers) and making this evil drug I just don't know. I also didn't buy this constant forgiveness theme - she's best friends with Luc a guy who scarred her for life? I also found her lack of self awareness daft - can't believe she doesn't realise what the drug's doing as soon as Kaz mentions this magic dust. Oh and her acceptance of Kaz' true Love and happily ever after is very naïve - I prefer a slightly more believable heroine.

Maybe because I wasn't drawn into the characters I found the romance unconvincing. Not sure but something there just wasn't working for me.

Saying that this did keep me reading and I did like the story and the world. Definitely not my favourite Michele Hauf though - I found the writing a little slap-dash in this one. Several occasions of intrusive narrator which annoyed me and also the use of slang - heroine uses the term boob at one point which is not something that works for me in a romance novel.

So this one is firmly middle of the road - great of the paranormal side of things, not so great on the romance.

My headaches really threw me behind when it comes to my review books. I am so glad to get back on the horse so to speak. And THE VAMPIRE HUNTER was the perfect book to get started back with.

I found it really easy to emphasize with both of the main characters even though I found that Zoe is too naive at times to really survive. She has lofty dreams but she really needs to find some way to check that she isn't really making things worse. Now Kaz is also a piece of work. I have never ran across a man who is so out of touch with his feelings. The two of them do make magic together and really compliment each the other weaknesses.

I found THE VAMPIRE HUNTER to be light reading even though it did deal with some dark subjects such as drug abuse and addiction. The plot moves along at a good pace and the dialogue is snappy. I do recommend it to my readers who enjoy paranormal romance.

I rate this book more of a 3.5, but goodreads and other sites dont do the whole .5 thing.
I have read one other Michele Hauf book, and I loved it. I belive it was slightly shorter, but it packed a punch. So, when I picked this one up I expected the same thing.

While I cant exactly say I was wrong, I can say I was expecting more emotion and just that... thing in a story that makes me not want to put it down and makes me jump up and down and scream. I cried one -- for like two seconds.

The characters were pretty quirky. I felt that I need to go back and read more of her books because there were a few things that confused me and I felt that I was missing something (Im bad about picking up the second book in a series without having read the first).

Kaz... Hes sexy as hell and fights for what he believes in. But for a vampire hunter who supposedly kicks ass, he sure as hell gets HIS ass kicked a lot. I appreciate that hes just human and isnt one of those macho dude (and yes, there are a few scenes where he does kick butt), so it was kind of appealing. He does make the relationship budding between him and Zoe difficult, but I'm not going into details about that.

Speaking of Zoe, in the description, it says shes quirky. Yea, she is! I couldn't get a pin on her! I did like her, but she might have been a but naive to a flaw. She also has a quirk that will make you laugh and appreciate her all the more!

So, I didn't hate the book, but it wasn't my favorite, and I'm currently not dissuaded from and Michele Hauf books. I will give her another try, but maybe in a different series? I did notice that she had a lot of books...

The theme of this book is obviously forgiveness. It is a sweet, simple paranormal romance with an interesting storyline. But the problems and solutions that come up are very easily overcome.

Zoe is a flitter-headed witch who wants to save the world, starting by healing the vampires, and her BF Luc, of their dust addictions. Unfortunately her naivety gets her in trouble. Zoe’s cat has a wonderful personality, almost human.

Kaz was a lost little boy who was rescued by the Order of the Stake. Becoming a Vampire Hunter gave him a purpose in life, but he still longs for a connection with somebody. He also wants revenge for the death of his friends by a one-fanged vampire.

I liked that there was an instant connection between Zoe and Kaz. They have a lot in common. Both lost their moms and were estranged from their dads at an early age, forcing them to find their own way in the world. But Kaz is unsure of getting close to a witch. In the end each finds unexpected solutions to their problems and goals.

The part after they rescue Sid has way too much ‘I love you, but’ stuff and should gotten to the action faster.

Fave scene: the old lady during the tram fight and Pierre cutting Kaz’s arm to heal Zoe.

Another great story by Michele Hauf, this was hard to put down, keep my interests going. Rasper, Raz was almost killed on his 16 birthday by a longtooth, but he got lucky and killed the vamp so he couldn't change and was helped by Thor. Thor took him into the Order of the Stake where they ash killing vamps but he is on a personal case there dust junkie vamp killed his friends. We will see Vaillent a few times and its good to see how he is staying clean of faeries.
Zoe a witch but in her case a warlock makes a blend to help vamps kick the dust but she was being used and when she crosses paths with Raz there is no turning her back on the man that bewitched her from that first look. Until her secrets are revealed and she helps him find her friend that also killed his friends. It keep me reading well into my sleep but it was hard to put down.

This is a unique take on the 'all paranormal creatures are real' sort of world. Told from the Hunter's perspective~and he is one yummy, tormented, sympathetic hunter~this tale of love in all the wrong places stole my heart. The characters are rich and deep, their connection~though instantaneous~felt organic and believable. Kaz hunts vampires that harm humans. Zoe concocts a magical substance to help vampires kick a horrible addiction that is running rampant through their race, turning them into mindless, murdering monsters. Their paths intertwine in more ways than one and the heat level between them is off the charts despite some tangles in their developing relationship.

At first this book was looking like a 4 out of 5 rating and then I hit the middle section. The middle section seemed to drag and I kept finding other things to do rather than finish the book.

The middle section made dumb and dumber look like geniuses. I just couldn't handle the clueless cheerleader persona of the heroine, Zoe. I really learned to hate her.

Kaz, on the other hand, was a fun character to read. I liked this human vampire slayer.

"Hauf's signature flair for dialogue and description make the novel hard to put down. The scenes between Kaz and Zoe sparkle with sexual tension". (RT Book Reviews) rated 4 1/2 stars

Pretty unimpressive and uneventful. Painfully obvious plot. And let me me just get out of my chest that the last explanation of why she had that scar was RIDICULOUS! Just flat out infuriating is what it was. Smh.

Thank you Michele Hauff! I received this book from the author from a Facebook Christmas contest. She even signed it and as I am a fan I was thrilled to start reading it. I enjoy all her paranormal reads and this one did not fail to impress!
