The Manic Mission: Children of the Mob, #1

Rate this book
Which one will be the mafia’s next victim?

Gabe Giordano, the sexy young lead of the upcoming band Shine, will do anything to prove he’s no monster like his mob-connected father. Emboldened by mania, Gabe slips out after nightclub gigs and embarks on a secret redemptive mission against the dirtiest of mobsters. But reckless heroics mark Gabe—and all those close to him—as mafia targets.

Savannah Fletcher, co-singer of Shine, has faced too many hardships with her best friend and on-and-off boyfriend Gabe, but even as she tries to move on to a relationship with a carefree biker, her lingering feelings for Gabe are placing her in harm’s way—again.

Claire Noel Brooks, an isolated artist and “beauty seeker” like her Cherokee granny, is infatuated with the beautiful and wealthy Giordanos, who’ve unexpectedly arrived at her quiet lakeside community just in time for Christmas. But behind their beauty and wealth hide the ugly secrets of their first million-dollar deal. And history too often repeats.

Kallie Giordano, the fourth of six siblings and a skilled kickboxer, has always protected her unstable younger brother Gabe, but she’s not prepared to fight mobsters. She’s less prepared to save Gabe from himself… or face the possibility that maybe he’s telling the truth about the threats coming right from within the Giordano family.

THE MANIC MISSION (Children of the Mob, #1) is a dark thriller with romance and can be read as a standalone novel or as the first book in the Children of the Mob series.

The Manic Mansion: Children of the Mob is a mixed-genre book. It's lives as a YA, with primary genres being thriller, contemporary, and romance. As it is a mix, then if you're looking for exclusively one genre or the other to represent strongly, you may be quickly disappointed. However, if you're looking for something fresher and outside-of-the-box, then this has its appeal.

This multi-POV story mostly focuses on the main character, Gabriel "Gabe", and the initial dilemma he found himself in: he pissed off a mobster, and fears it will result in harm to everyone he cares about, he lacks the capacity to navigate it. Gabe runs on full-blown mania for the most of the story, and while well-intentioned in some ways, he's willfully oblivious in others. That's where the "Manic" in the title comes in; he has bipolar disorder. And this was also the reason I eventually assigned "contemporary" as the stark representation of his mental illness is not something that is common in neither thriller nor romance. Thrillers tend to lean towards competency, and romance evokes sympathy. But contemporary has this rawness and frustration of watching a character fail, constantly, at often basic social interactions, without rhyme or reason other than riding on highs and lows and an incapacity to understand consequence. A little more on this.

The depiction of Gabe's condition feels very real. And it feels very frustrating, because I can immediately connect with all the side characters in this, because I've had to watch a sibling constantly self-destruct. I've watched the same girls be dazzled by this overtly enthusiastic, talented, stunning creature and then I in turn wonder how they can put up with someone who flutters like a moth to every flame yearning to be burned. But, this is also the same person who will get intensely passionate about things, and lose interest as quickly, running on bad ideas without forethought of what consequences can come. (At least Gabe wasn't digging up parks looking for meteorites...) Gabe does legitimately hurt people, not outwardly maliciously, but at the same time, he cheats, he runs away, doesn't answer phone calls, he self-destructs spectacularly, and doesn't take onus for consequence. Some of his behaviors stem from legitimate (and exceptionally evil) trauma (and if the villains engaging in child trafficking and all those horrible things makes you cry extra hard, there's your trigger warning for this book.) By the time the book was over, I was surprised his father hadn't hired a hitman who would shoot blow darts into Gabe's neck on a regular basis, just so he would be on his medication. Like please, just stop making all the girls around you so confused and sad, Gabe! Grr!!!

The characterizations were generally good. Author Simone does answer the question eventually of why Savannah puts up with Gabe's antics (from personal observation, I always found broken girls to be the ones who had the hardest time leaving people like Gabe. And Savannah does come from a happy home, technically.) Also answers why Gabe was very disinclined to be upfront with her. Miscommunication isn't a good trope unless well-justified, so a shared trauma and not wanting her to revisit it was a very fare explanation. Generally, Simone was good at answering these types of plot-hole questions, and I found myself satisfied with the conclusions. It does come with an HEA ending, maybe not quite at blow dart level, but I'm pleased with it. I hope that these characters can heal, and that the wrong wrought within this family is confronted in future installments.

The book is a challenging read, it's an interesting read. Author Simone handled the POVs well. The blurb is very concise and informative, so read carefully and figure out if these plot points are for you.

This is a thrilling story that kept me on the edge of my seat until the very last page. Even with all the trouble the main character gets himself into, I still rooted for him and empathized with what he was doing. The author gives a realistic look into mob activity and the mind of a troubled teenage boy with bipolar disorder. I can't wait for the sequel!

4.2 ⭐️

The Manic Mission by C.J. Simone is more than just a book – it's an immersive experience that leaves an indelible mark on the reader's soul. With gratitude to Booktasters for the ARC, I delved into this literary journey with high expectations, and Simone did not disappoint.

From the very premise, the author captivates with the promise of a thrilling ride, and she delivers in spades. The narrative is a masterful blend of mystery, thriller, and unexpected twists that keep you on the edge of your seat, eagerly flipping through the pages for more. By Chapter 5, I was already ensnared, unable to tear myself away.

One of Simone's greatest strengths lies in her ability to craft multi-dimensional characters with raw, authentic arcs of development. Each perspective is meticulously crafted and consistently portrayed, allowing me as a reader to connect deeply with their struggles, emotions, and consequences of their actions. What truly stands out is Simone's skill in characterizations, exuding offering a range of acceptance and originality that breathes life into the story's leads.

Despite the book's mixed genre approach, with hints of romance woven into the web of thrills and chaos, Simone's storytelling remains cohesive and engaging. While some may find the multilayered perceptions challenging to navigate, the journey is well worth the effort. It's a wow statement for me on Simone's skill that even in moments of confusion, I'm compelled to push forward, driven by the promise of discovery and revelation.

In The Manic Mission, the author leaves no crumbs for the haters – her debut novel is a promising proof to her talent and creativity. While it may not fit neatly into a specific trope or genre, it offers something far more valuable, adds depth and intrigue – a visceral, immersive experience that leaves you feeling alive with every thrill it serves. So, if you find yourself hesitating, unsure of where this story will take you, I urge you to give it the benefit of the doubt. You may just find yourself swept away on a journey you won't soon forget.

This novel followed a troubles young man named Gabe. His life was never easy coming from a big family, a sick mother and his a strict dad. Gabe was traumatized and hurting and instead of facing his problems he was running and indulging in all types of crazy behavior. His erratic actions caused pain to his family and friends, and got him involved with the wrong type of people who were after him, threatening him and the people he loves.

I liked the different characters in the novel so different and how each affected Gab's psych.

I liked how this novel shed a light on important matters like child trafficking, child porn and abuse

This book was an interesting read and I wish good luck to the author on the second book in this series

The book immediately draws you in with the unique voice of Gabe Giordano. He reminds me a lot of Holden Caulfield from The Catcher in the Rye. From the beginning there's this mystery surrounding Gabe and what he's doing driving recklessly through the city and you learn about his heroic--albeit--"manic" mission to save the trafficked children in his area. The book winds through four POVs--all with distinct voices--as they work the highs and lows of Gabe's bipolar disorder. The book has a long build up but (no spoilers) it's worth it to see why Gabe has to complete his mission--even if it puts everyone he loves in danger.

A gripping, yet dark thriller. We meet Gabe Giordano, the son of mob associate and his siblings. Gabe means well, yet he manages to create a lot of his own problems. But you still end up rooting for him. This type of book that will keep you until the wee hours of the morning because you can’t put it down.

A must-read psychological thriller:
I am genuinely grateful about how life has brought the author’s insightful talent, my way.
CJ Simone’s knowledge of individual and relational psychology is fascinating, reaching to depths from where I can relate to her book more than one can imagine.
Being deeply scarred by c/PTSD caused by an alcoholic, violent father, also having been se*ually abused in the military, I could connect to the intricate plot, which takes the reader through mires of suffering, to shores of healing from where memories can progress from stages of subconscious denial, to stages of conquered hurdles, onto scenarios where the hurtfully acquired experiences become plans of action meant to save and prevent such ordeals from happening in the lives of destitute children and (young) adults.
The narrative style skilfully takes the reader through chapters which are the characters’ own perspective about the developing plot, individual angles of the stages which offer unbelievably personal reactions, displaying CJ Simone’s knowledgeable insight into psychoanalysis, which with a cog-to-cog precision exposes intra- and interpersonal battles, meant to bring hope into situations where hopelessness seems to drag each character to inescapable outcomes.
Will goodness and kindness prevail in this multi-faceted, true Christmas story?
The best way to find out, is by immersing into this story, which I can boldly affirm should be read by all social workers and psychotherapists, by anyone whose heart beats for the emotional and physical wellbeing of children and (young) adults, with a desire to see justice not only as an act of randomness, but as a deliberate choice for the benefit of all.
Very much looking forward to CJ Simone’s next book, “The Manic Edge”.

Well. I didn’t hate this book but I didn’t exactly love it either. The plot was interesting enough to keep my attention but the writing is not well done. I ended up not caring about the characters and due to the very repetitive use of phrases I found myself rolling my eyes quite a bit. I can see that while this book was trying to shed a light on mental illness, I just think it didn’t quite hit the mark.

I wasn't even halfway through the first chapter when I knew I was in for a wild ride. The narrative in The Manic Mission bounces back and forth between several characters, beginning with Gabe, who is the most intense by far. It doesn't take long before it's learned that he is bipolar, and his manic highs and oppressive lows reveal that he also has emotional issues that go much deeper this mental condition.
Children of a mafia affiliated family, they eventually find themselves at odds with a mobster engaged in a sickening sex trafficking operation. Despite his problems, Gabe seems determined to undermine them, but things don't always work out as planned, either by his own actions or the sheer evilness of his enemies.
The writing is intense as the story is - realistic, impassioned dialogue, settings and scenery, believable and relatable characters, as well as a long buildup that takes the reader to the roots of the many conflicts. Especially notable is that each character has a distinct voice and personality which is consistent throughout the story. Each time a character takes over the narrative, you don't have to check to know who is speaking. It's obvious through their voice. A brilliant and well thought out character building effort that works amazingly well from the beginning to the end of this page turner.
I see that there is a followup to this story, and I'm eagerly awaiting it!

I’m a fan of mob / Mafia stories and I like that this one is different as it focuses on the children of said families.
It’s a world that many of us know about and this story takes us on an adventure from multiple points of view.
I preferred the sister to the mc in all honesty but it’s a roller coaster of a tale to keep you entertained.

Thanks to C.J Simone for the copy of her book in return for an honest review.

This is book one in Simone's Children of the Mob series.

There are 73 chapters in this book but don't let that scare you. They're not too long, which I like. It adds to the fast-paced snappiness that the story requires.

It's very much a go go go book right from the first sentence, which makes it quite intense. There's no preamble or scene setting, you're thrown into the, literal, chase instantly.

Something I wasn't a particular fan of - and I know this is purely a personal opinion - is that I found some of it...like the story itself was aware of the words being used to tell it. There are a lot of metaphors, a lot of language that only fits within a book rather than it being natural conversation. Again, people are fine with that as it is indeed a book and therefore the language used would be the type that fits into a book. But for me it felt a bit obvious and that drew me out of it slightly.

We have four main POVs:

Gabe Giordano is our main character. He is the son of a mobster and wants to make something of his life, especially through his music. Even though he wants to distance himself from his father and that mob world, there was something that still felt a bit slimy about him to me. But unfortunately, no matter how hard he tries to distance himself, he is as wanted as his family.

Then we have Savannah Fletcher, another singer in the band. She is Gabe's on/off boyfriend and close friend. She really wants to trust him, but he is inadvertently causing her danger. I much preferred her as a character than Gabe.

Then we have Claire Noel Brooks, and artist who is obsessed with Gabe and the Giordano family, but soon discovers that there's something ugly going on within the family. It was nice to get an "outsiders" view on the family.

And finally we have Kallie Giordano, one of Gabe's sisters. She loves him and wants to support him, but she doesn't want to be swept up in the danger he seems to bring.

Overall for me, this was about a dysfunctional family, about wanting your own future, about wanting to make your own way in the world, about distancing yourself, about friendships and relationships, about being scared, about what you're willing to protect, and what you're willing to sacrifice. It also manages the them of mental health very sensitively.

Amazon says it is aimed at 14-18 year olds, and I'd have to agree. At 30, it wasn't the most grabbing of books for me, but I can see it being a real winner for that age group. It has everything I think they'd want in a story: danger, love, excitement, adventure - I can see it being very popular with teens.

Whilst there are several POVs, it is Gabe's that leads the story, and it wasn't something I was used to. In my opinion, very few books - especially teenage books - are from the viewpoint of a young man or boy, it's usually girls. And so that was quite interesting to see how he faced up to the events in the books compared to how I imagine any other character world.

I'd say overall, it was an interesting story, with some slight flaws, but a promising debut, and I definitely think it could become a popular series for teens. Especially teenage boys who are notoriously reluctant to read.

A smart, heartfelt mafia thriller that deftly explores the danger and fragility facing a contemporary crime family. We can’t wait for Book Two.

The first entry in C.J. Simone’s Children of the Mob series introduces us to the Giordano family. The Manic Mission is told from alternating points of view, opening with the perspective of Gabe Giordano, an Italian American heartthrob who is determined to make his living in the music business. Classically trained, but with a passion for club music, Gabe fronts a promising band called Shine.

But Gabe is surrounded by mortal threats. In addition to his father, a mob-connected loan shark, there’s Lester, a gangster with strong ties to the Sicilian Mafia (“He should stink, but he doesn’t. Smells like licorice. Or maybe that’s the mattress too. Sex and piss and licorice”). According to a semi-reliable source, Lester has promised Gabe a slow death.

Gabe also suffers from mental health issues that have driven him to several suicide attempts. The secrets he carries undoubtedly weigh on him. And adding to all the risk in his topsy-turvy life, the very thing he loves most – his band, Shine – is a project he shares with Savannah Fletcher. Trouble is, Savannah – who also tells much of the story – is also Gabe’s on-and-off girlfriend. The pair aren’t technically a polyamorous couple, but they have an agreement that every time they break up, they have permission to date other people. Despite their amicable agreement, the relationship seems to be trapped in an endless cycle of passion, resentment, jealousy and fear.

Gabe is richly drawn as a passionate artist trapped in an abusive life that he didn’t choose. Simone’s balancing act of Gabe’s sometimes frenetic narratives and alternating perspectives make him hugely sympathetic. In the early going, Gabe speaks about his “shot at redemption” – even though he admits he doesn’t know how redemption works. But what he really wants is escape. As Simone ratchets up the suspense in each succeeding chapter, it’s increasingly clear that Gabe’s life is slowly killing him. Even sexy Mayson, who Gabe can’t resist, reeks of trouble.

Throughout, Simone juggles a large cast of characters and shines as a first-person storyteller. It’s a refreshing approach for the organized crime genre, and one that gives the novel plenty of heart. But her crowning achievement is Gabe, who may go down as one of the most believable and compelling children of mobsters since young, conflicted Michael Corleone.

The Manic Mission was an engaging and suspenseful read. While the story started off a bit slowly—the reasons behind Lester and his men chasing Gabe weren't revealed until more than 40% into the book—it eventually picked up and kept me hooked.

The Ending (Spoilers)

Characters Analysis

While its multifaceted main characters (Gabe and Kallie) breathed life into the story, Claire Noel was one I struggled to establish a genuine connection with. And while we're here, I feel like the Giordanos were using Claire Noel as their little pet. Cause how did you just meet and now you're taking this girl on a shopping spree for Christmas and her birthday, when they can barely take care of each other? Like Mea said “Did you enjoy being their little doll? Getting all their attention?”

Claire Noel Brooks
So, my least favourite character... Idk what more to say except that she fell short in terms of character development and authenticity. Her dialogue often felt forced and unnatural, making it difficult to connect with her on a deeper level. Let me be blunt, I can't stand her. So, I'll sit down.

Kallie Giordano
Kallie was a baddie. I felt like, in comparison to Claire Noel, I knew and understood her past, goals and therefore her behaviour and actions. I just loved every time she made a cameo and her povs.

Gabe Giordano aka Gabo Boy
On the other hand, Gabe was a pretty adorable character. I'm not entirely sure if his being written the way he was and having ADHD was a good representation for neurodivergent characters. I'm not diagnosed as neurodivergent, so I can't vouch for something I'm unaware of. But I think the way he behaved (when he wasn't annoying and reckless) added a refreshing and endearing perspective to the narrative. It set him apart from other main male characters I've read about.

Despite its flaws, this mafia novel proves to be an exciting read, perfect for fans of gritty, character-driven narratives. Oh, and that cover is so pretty!!

Gabe Giodarno has to make up for all the bad things his father has done. He isn't perfect...Hell, he isn't even close. In fact, he is basically the fuck up of the family. Still, he is intent on making a difference. His music is his passion, Savannah is his love, and the girls? Well, they need him and if he won't help them, who will? But, his own penchant for screwing everything up has him losing the girl he has loved his entire life, getting into someone who is completely dark and punishes him. Still, he deserves it for everything he has done. With tighter restrictions and his father moving them out of town, Gabe is still intent on doing whatever it takes to save these girls....even if it means sacrificing his own freedom.
I received a copy of this eBook from the author in exchange for an honest review. I am very behind in reviews and I can't even tell you with any accuracy when I finished this book. Still, I am generally very good about remembering the important parts of the books I read.

I enjoyed most of this book, although it is VERY dark. There is a child prostitution ring, rape of both sexes, and abuse. Just a heads up before you go any farther with the review. In addition to those not so wonderful points above Gabe is bipolar and has a lot of depression issues. Given everything that has happened in his life, it does not surprise me. Still, if you try to avoid books with those things in them, this is your warning.

Despite everything Gabe genuinely does try his best to be a good person. No matter how much he hates himself he self destructs versus taking it out on those around him. For the most part. To get the full picture of everything that is going on in his life the author changes perspectives between him, his siblings, his ex girlfriend, and the young girl next door who has a crush on him. Each of these people give us more details on what is going on without the sometimes clouded mind of a person who has seen too much.

The book is well written and you hope the best for most of the characters throughout. Although, I can't say I wanted the best for Gabe's father at the end, but I will leave you to draw your own opinions on that one. That being said, although the book is good, I don't think I'll be looking for any more in this series in the future.

The first thing you notice about CJ Simone's The Manic Mission is the choppy sentences. Many of them really aren't sentences - they lack subjects or verbs or other essential elements, yet they engender a feel that seems both natural and genuine, and it dawns on you - this is actually the way people think and talk. It's an impressive affect. The next thing you notice is that each of the 70- something chapters is named for one of the characters. This at first seems to be no big deal - plenty of books bounce from a description of the actions of one character to another. This one is different. It actually bounces from the PERSPECTIVE of one character to another. The reader gets the chance to follow the story through Gabe's eyes, or Savannah's, or Kallie's, or Claire's, and the perspective genuinely changes. It's almost as if the author is saying, "Let's visit what this character is thinking." Again, the affect is impressive.

Gabe and Savannah are teenage members of a successful band and are in an on-again, off-again relationship. The central character is Gabe, who is no perfect hero. He's way too flirtatious for Savannah, and he's being pursued by goons directed by a pimp named Lester. Gabe's father is a mafia/type gangster who appears to have no love for his son. Older sister Kallie is as close to a parent as Gabe gets. All are thrown together with a reclusive artsy-type named Claire and are drawn into run-ins with the sinister Lester, only to be rescued, somewhat, by Mr. Giordano. Gabe gets through a brief dalliance with the older Mayson O'Berry, finding his way through adventures much as any misdirected, self-absorbed high school boy would.

I wouldn't care to live in the town as illustrated by Ms. Simone, but it seems quite genuine to me. If you're interested in a little drama and a bit of romance from real life characters, give this book a try.

A gripping story with a powerful message!

I greatly enjoyed reading The Manic Mission! This was such a harrowing story that really had me feeling strongly for all of the characters, ESPECIALLY Gabe. He is such a deeply flawed character, but when you discover the truth behind all of the reasons WHY he behaves the way he does, makes the choices he makes, and takes all of the dangerous chances he takes, it all makes sense and makes the reader care very deeply for him.

I was appalled when the plot twist of his dad's most heinous of crimes was revealed! I didn't see it coming, and I was shocked by the revelation. Adding to that the fact that one or two other family members KNEW what his dad was doing to Gabe (and Savannah), and didn't do anything about it or try to stop it, but rather ENCOURAGED Gabe to continue to go along with it "one last time" was equally as shocking! They all just swept everything under the rug, and that turned out to have devastating consequences in the long run not only for Gabe, but EVERYONE else around him as well. It's NO WONDER Gabe has mental health issues considering the horror his dad intentionally put him through from a young age!

I thought this novel was extremely well written! The multi-person points of view were exceptionally well done. Each character had a unique voice, and they all contributed to the story in a deep and meaningful way. Their growth and development throughout really made each of the characters and the story as a whole shine.

I love that everything was wrapped up and all of the questions were answered by the end. I appreciated the uplifting ending after such a dark journey. This novel is great as a stand-alone with the fantastic ending. And it's exciting that their stories continue with a second book in this series. I'm looking forward to reading more from C.J. Simone!

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this tense and thrilling book!
