When the party that was supposed to shed light on the underground world of Summerville went pear shaped and revealed the death of a team member they ended up with more questions than answers.
Who killed Bishop and why? Was it because he got too close to the truth or was he going rogue and crossed the wrong person?
If they want their answers Kenzie will have to play her part well for her new ‘job’ to get to the heart of the operation. Not to mention a new auction date has been set and the ‘merchandise’ will be lost if the team doesn't move fast.
Can the team figure it out in time, or will their setbacks leave them turning in circles?
Only time will tell. But what about Kenzie’s ghost status? She only has until the end of the case to decide if she'll remain part of Team Basilisk or return to her lonely role. Time is ticking and with their uncertain future and lives on the line, Kenzie and the team have their work cut out for them.
AHHHH, THIS WAS SO GOOD!! These two books have been a definite favourite of mine from Lexie. I'm excited to see what's in stall for Kensington and Co. I felt that it ended nicely and left room for possible continuation. I am really liking the MITHOS story universe and hope that there are more spy books in the future. Maybe even showing the ins and outs of the Academy. There was so many twists and turns, leaving you at the edge of your seat. The last 150 pages were read in one go because I could not put it down. Lexie Winston's books are always so entertaining. Highly recommend this duet!
I’ve been OK with dark until I got pregnant so the review reflect this fact as well. I’d like to say that for me personally content of the book became darker than the first book (I didn’t even tagged Spies Like Me as dark to begin with). In the first book we just became acquainted with the small town and its inhabitants where the investigation takes place. In the second book we see all the creepy details of their lives 👀
TW for sensitive readers should be considered for sure (drug use, human -specifically teenage- trafficking, sex work & trafficking, FMC has to do sexual stuff for other adults to become the victim of all that, described on page). I was really uncomfortable during those parts because FMC presents herself as teenage girl and even though it’s consensual from her side per se (for the sake of mission), it’s dub/non consensual from the point of view of the ordinary child who already experienced it before her and became a victim of this ring. So I was cheering really hard for the team to solve this mystery as fast as possible 😅🙈
Spice was good when I wasn’t distracted by the dark stuff beforehand - there were just sweet, comforting moments between characters as a small break between days of spying - which I really needed in my tender mental state right now 🌚 MM is always a plus too 😁🫶🏼
I was wondering who is really guilty there but mostly was thinking that it is EVERYONE and just waited for the team to gather enough evidence, save as much people as possible and hightail from the town already! I was on the edge all the time because every additional day there meant one more day of disturbing experiences 😬 FMC is really strong to go through it all. Although, in the end, I can say that it is not as horrible as it is feared in the moment of reading, so don’t be scared too much after reading this 😁
The plot twist in the end was unexpected! I am glad that I finished and saw who is who in that town 🥸
Another thing I was interested in is the progression of the relationship dynamics between FMC and MCs in those difficult conditions. It is known that common difficulties bring people together faster and since Kensington has been strongly against being a part of the team of any sort in the first book, here everything is beginning to change.
The ending was abrupt but kind of HFN so I’m looking forward to reading some bonus stories about how they all live after mission as themselves 🤍 I just really reeaaaally want to see more of their ordinary life together!
ARC received in exchange for an honest review - thank you!
Spoiler , kinda The story was amazing and I was soooo enthralled and then you just … drop the ball. No satisfaction, no justice… I truly hope the Nobella brings things together cause I was pretty disappointed.
Spies Like Us brings us up to the 2nd book in the M.I.T.H.O.S world and it was so great to be back. We kick off right where we finished book 1, Kenzie tripped and made a gruesome discovery, so it is hardly a surprise that there is alot of questions and not alot of answers. With this series having some dark themes, it's always a good idea to check content/trigger warnings.
Our girl Kenzie and her men focus on the seedy underbelly of Summerville, Georgia, getting in amongst it all, getting in deep in some cases. And of course, their team dynamics are really heating up. Not just professionally, but also.... um, not so professionally too!!! Where can a girl get a pair like Ry and Miller? Asking for a friend, of course!!!
With a couple of open storylines, a follow up Team Basilisk novella and a book for Katie in the future, it would awesome if the current kids of Serenity House could be introduced to M.I.T.H.O.S. Maybe mentored by Team Basilisk??? That would be cool. Anyhoo, I am really looking forward to wading further in to this world.
Dived straight into this following the first. IMO the first was far better, this one seemed lost and pulled you in different directions, parts seemed rushed and weren't expanded upon. Our FMC also for me lost her badassery somewhere along the way. The guys after they lost one of the teams worked well together with the usual grumpy, nerdy, nice, dominant etc. ones our FMC had to relate to. Some parts were predictable and others were a bit of a let down.
I believe Lexie is writing a novella to follow and another set of books based upon MITHOS.
I love the M.I.T.H.O.S. world that the author has created. I love a good spy book. The characters are unique and multifaceted. The relationship progression is well done. My favourite character kept changing throughout the book; first it was Lathan, then Anders, then next and next and so on. There are some surprises that are a great in progressing the story. A high level of steam. Unfortunately, I found that the ending was a little rushed. I was left with several questions that hopefully will be answered in the novella promised in the future. Overall, I enjoyed this series
I will say that if human trafficking, drug use and dubcon is a trigger for you, then this may not be the story for you.
I don’t know what to say! I want more. Will it continue with Kenzie and her guys or will we get a duet with Katie and whomever causes let’s face it, Katie needs her own team as well lol
I would have really enjoyed seeing how monarchs could have their heirs as assassins. Why would “Dad and Uncle T” teach their daughters how to be assassins? How is Kenzie an assassin and Princess Kensington? I wish the trafficking was a side plot that they were doing on the side while they were actually showing us how they were going to be a team and then a couple. Okkkkkkk so she’s not the heir that’s her mother’s brother and his son … but it still seems odd.
74% and we haven’t nailed down who all is in this ring, or how it works, or where anyone goes … we have all these open ended things … and again … there’s 30% left … like … why
How is everything going to get entertaining at 89% ???? Make that make sense
The ending wasn’t satisfying at all. Even Mac says it was over too quickly. WHAT IN THE WORLD REALLY…
I don’t need it to be open ended so we can follow Cousin Katie … I want this wrapped up.
Ultimately there was mention of trafficking and statements of abuse but we never had to see it, which was nice.
I’m still mad about the ending. Most of the book series was fine. I liked the beginning when they were themselves. I liked the ending when we were getting somewhere and they were themselves. BUT OVERALL, a waste of time. So much high school, BS.
We didn’t see anything wrapped up with the trafficking ring in Somerville and now we’re going international?! We don’t know who offed Bishop. We. Don’t. Know. Anything. It’s simply over and I hate that.
Update: I had to come back and remove a star, I’m so annoyed. NOTHING HAPPENED IN THIS SERIES… nothing at all. We know Kenzie is done being a ghost and THATS IT. We know nothing and there are nothing but loose ends.
It took me so long to read these two books because besides liking the characters (which I really did), the story was so drawn out all for it to not matter at the end CAUSE ITS NOT OVER!! I don’t care if we follow Katie next, we should’ve been given closure on this side of the story.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
There was a big disconnect for me on this next installment, which really makes me wanna scream into a pillow or something. I might come back and reread this again.
Is it me, am I the drama? I don't think I'm the drama ✨️Maybe I am ✨️
Anyway, I think again for me in this book. I wasn't really feeling much connection between the characters. I wanted more meaningful deep moments between Kensie and her men. There were plenty of spicey scenes to bask in for you, fellow smut s**ts Trust me. You'll combust into flames. It's just that I want to have them share their hurts, maybe cry together, maybe fight it out? I'm not too sure. Not saying this didn't happen we definitely did get it, but it felt flat.
Sometimes things would be hinted at such as Miller hating Kensie because he thought she took her mom for granted and I hoped throughout the boom we'd really see them talk about it or connect in some way to shift this prespective and that hope didn't really get met. This is just an example of something connection wise that happened a few times in different ways, but again, not the end of the world.
The writing was great, and characters continued to be distinct and really eye catching in their own ways. The storyline and mission was executed perfectly. It really kept you wondering and on your toes. Also, we got to see a beat down of justice in the end. 🙌 Which was nice.
Although not for you, Stella. 🤨 You could get your a** beat another time or two for my liking.
All of this is my opinion, and don't let it dissuade you if you made it this long through the review. I might just be having a slump day or just not connecting as well. If you have the chance definitely check it out.
Thoroughly entertained until the end, very abrupt ending, no closure (plot or romance wise)
I really liked this book, I reread the first one and read 80% of this book until 4AM. I was really entertained, until the end of the book, where the author apologies and says she's working on other books (which is fine) but there will be a small novella before segueing to Katie's book :/ The author said this was a HEA for now...no, this was abrupt fine for now. For me, it's okay if the plot wraps where catching the bad guys doesn't get finished with these characters. There are different spies and roles of a mission, it's a big network of bad guys. But the author did not properly wrap up the romance with this book, we had development but not really a conclusion to their romance. I feel like she should have just finished the book properly so we didn't have to wait for this novella or even have one. I just don't get why there is this novella. If this book had included all these elements the rating could have easily been higher. If Kenzie is such a great spy...why do people keep sneaking up on her! I totally understand that it happens...and for an average person I get it, but Kenzie was made to be one of the best spies in the world.
I dnf’d af the 82% mark. The development (and sometimes lack therein) finally got to me Our total baddie, capable, and fierce heroine turned into an absolute doormat. It was the single most disappointing character arc. And for someone who spent a book and a half screaming to the entire world that “her only use isn’t on her back, TRUST HER GUYS she’s a total capable baddie who outclasses every single other agent” it gets suspiciously less believable as the show goes on and her literal actual only skill IS her ability to honeypot. I wanted a soy book about a baddie heroine. I got a doormat prostitute who can…do….something….? Supposedly? I’m smex forward so it wasn’t me bring a prude. I wanted a spicey book I literally was trying to find a spicy book. But this is just like, false advertising in regards to everything else. Was so excited to read a soy series! Should have known better I guess. Gotta leave all the soy work to the boys while she works her vag magic and nothing else! (Insert sarcastic upside down smiling emoji here). Ugh.
Honestly, this book is a 2 for me, but I don’t like marking ratings under a 3 unless they are truly awful with editing issues and writing style as well. I had to force myself to finish this though. I primarily read RH and have read some pretty dark stuff, so that’s not the reason why. This book was just disgusting to me. It started out bad in the first, but it’s so much worse in this one. The FMC has zero respect for herself and is fine with being a “honey trap” because she is some “bada$$ assassin” (which we really don’t see any of). That in no way makes someone good at what they do. The men mostly all treat her like a blow up doll in a porno, but “it’s fine” because it’s the job and they’re “meant to be together as a team and her family loves them”. What they have her doing isn’t even her real job, so she’s just getting used because she’s female and at the prompting of her “loving father”. Seriously, this book is just junk. If you’re looking for pure dubcon smut, go for it. If you want any sort of decent storyline, don’t bother.
I never leave reviews on books. This will be my first. I read over 200 books in a year and I don’t think another book has pissed me off as much as this one did. What was that ending? The plot is built up for the first book and a halfand then complete cliffhanger. Are we going to get the rest of the story? I don’t need a novella explaining the cousin story, I need something explaining our main characters endings. Do they catch the bad guys? She built this awesome, bad ass main female lead who only benefit through the whole book was to be a honey pot. What kind of message are you sending to women if that’s the kind of character you’re building? This story had so much potential and I loved it until about 80% through the second book. I should not have even given at the time of day after that. So many plot holes and that “happily ever after” was an absolute dumpster fire.
I have really enjoyed the premise of this series so far. Not so much the way it dragged out. Because it did. And then the ending. I am not sure if the author plans to continue Kensington’s story line or move on to Katie’s but she definitely set up that story line. But that’s no reason to leave the ending this hot mess. Spoiler alert: yay they caught the local criminals. One got away but queue Katie’s story. And that’s it. It literally ends on the scene where the trafficking ring is exposed. There is absolutely no resolution. There is no cliffhanger unless you count the Katie revelation. But again, to me that was just the set up for her story. So I get that there can’t really be an epilogue but there could have been some closure. Like what happened to the other foster kids? What was the blow back of the arrests? What about the traumatized waitresses? And since Katie was taken away on a plane, I can’t see how those questions can be resolved. Maybe the foster kids show up at M.I.T.H.O.S. Or something but that’s the only one. Unless she continues to follow this group to the next mission. Even though they all said numerous times that they needed a break.
Depends on your liking of book. I loved the characters
I am a bit disappointed in this one. It ended way to abrupt. Yes I got it Katie would get a book you could just tell. But the author said HEA for now but we didn't really see that did we. She said there will be a novela type later for them but if anyone knows about novelas they are usually short so we probably won't get much of them then either. Like I said I'm highly disappointed and yes alot left unsaid which yes she said would be addressed in the novela as well. This wasn't the best duet honestly. It's 2 books and I barely got into half way in 2nd book. And then it abruptly ends. I'm sure everyone will enjoy it. It's just not for me. But I will wait for the novela and if it is what I hope then I'll be happy. But seriously make it a big book.
First off let me say how much I have enjoyed these two books! Mac/Kenzie is so real her vulnerability is shown more in this book in my opinion. It gave her character further depth and I enjoyed the relationship building in this book. Miller and Ry are my absolute fav. guys of this series and I can't wait to see what is coming in the novella. I will say the ending did feel abrupt to me so I appreciated that there was an explanation given as there are some resolutions that are needed. I would definitely recommend this series because it is has a little of everything you want romance, mystery, action, etc. It held my attention and this series really had a lot of elements I enjoyed. Lexie Winston is a great author and has a way of creating worlds that are easy to get in lost in with her books. Definitely a fan!
I usually first pick up a book because I like the author, cover, then I like the synopsis of the story. With this being the second book in the series I just want the rest of the tea! This book did not disappoint. It picks up where we left off with a bang! ❗️ So much goes on and I’m clinging to my Kindle like someone is going to come yank it from my hands…😂🥰 if you enjoyed the first book, strap in and become more invested in this second book!
This book has it all
Fantastic and funny FMC who is talented and strong Men who will ensure you are well taken care of 👀 The plot and amazing world building are outstanding That ending…I’m feeling like Veruca Salt…🥰 run and download your very own copy….then embrace the journey.
Argh I felt like I waited forever for this one I had to go back and read book 1, not disappointed at all the characters are frickin amazing, loved Jessica's turn around. And Miller FINALLY stopped being stubborn. He's adorable, they all are, Mac's/Kenzies Character was so lovely to read, her irrational and logical thoughts were brilliant with her emotions, I soooo can't wait for the Novella as it's ment to provide some answers, I want a HEA not a for now lol they make an Phenomenal team, I want Miller to teach her hobbies she's always wanted 🙏 some awesome 1 on 1 time. Looking forward to Katie's book and more answers. Definitely recommend 👌
I understand at the end the author wrote there’s more to this book and a novella will be made to cover it… I just think she rushed to put a book out that wasn’t completely done. The book ended the story for this fmc and is being segued into someone else’s book. And quite honestly I just want to know how this one ends. All in all it dragged on and was garbagey, but I put the time in- this author ended the book with the bad guys sort of being captured. No epilogue, no nothing. Just ended. Honestly this was pretty awful and if that’s the kind of author she is… no thanks. I just can’t even consider this a finished book. What a ginormous waste of my time
So this duet is a bit darker because of the subject matter but I thought it was really cool to get an inner workings view to a spy organization and an investigation. Heavier on plot than romance (though I didn’t mind) there is definitely room left to expand the world. The smexy scenes were pretty spicy and the guys likeable. I’m really excited for the novella that will give us so more info on the HFN and ending! Here’s hoping that the novella also gives us some satisfaction on the bad guys getting what they deserve!
This book dives back into the world of Kensington and the guys on Team Basilisk. We pick up where we left off in book 1 and its action packed all the way. I loved the little twists in the story and I have to say I didn’t expect any of what happened, it kept me wanting more with every page I read. I loved all of Kenzie’s guys and her relationship with each is different but I have to say Lathan has a soft spot in my heart especially for him 🖤. The mild cliffhanger at the end had me excited for more from this world.
I have been a long time fan of Lexie Winston, and Spies Like Us was another wonderful book. This book is fast paced, well written, a great mystery with some twist and turns, and a great FMC, and some seriously sexy MMC's.
This book was a great follow-up to the first book in the duet. The relationship building between the FMC and the MMC's were top tier. Even though this book ends with a serious cliff hanger, it is just setting everything up for Katie's book. The author did mention that there will be a Novella for Mac in the future and I can't wait to read it!
I hate to say it, but this was just a 3.75, rounded up because I'm a huge fan on Lexie Winston's writing ... Usually:(
Being a long time fan of Winston's writing, I knew this would be a spicy read (no problems there), but for me there is a delicate balance between the amount of sex and story. Unfortunately, the balance was off in this one.🥱 I think because there were so many spicy scenes the storyline dragged (jmo) and I found myself skipping the sexy times to get back to the story. On top of that, the ending felt rushed ... Enough for Winston to include an apology in her afterward.
I get that she doesn’t know how to handle her new emotions. But being Phantom I feel like there were too many times when she got surprised or wasn’t paying enough attention. She’s supposed to be the best of the best and it didn’t really reflect most of the time, which was too bad because it was kinda the vibe I was looking for.
It was still a great read and I’m looking forward to the next books ! Hoping their’s a next one for this team because if there isn’t than the ending is very disappointing…
This book jumps straight back into where the last book left off and the action just does not stop. New information is discovered as they try to break the case, while also managing their own relationships.
It was a great HFN ending with the main case being solved, but does leave it open for side characters to get their own story in the future.
The characters are great as always from Lexie and I always want more! Can’t wait for future books within the same world.
Ohhh my!!! KENZIE!! this is great I enjoyed book 1 and book 2 picks right back up from that stunning cliff hanger! This our girls journey to reach her happy for now with her men while realizing she doesn't have to do it all alone (she totally could if she wanted) but that its nice to let people In it does end on a happy for now and we will get another novella later before we get Katie's story! So end of our girls journey but not end of this wicked world!!!!!
This was so good! It was like a movie. Every part of the book was full of action or steam. I loved how Kenzie was willing to do anything needed to catch the criminals. It was so great feeling like I was involved in the investigation. I was steadily making assumptions of who was running the show, but I was wrong every single time. The main big bad was shocking. I never would have thought of them! It was awesome. Ready for more!
