After Nikki Turner read The Coldest Winter Ever by Sistah Souljah she was dismayed that there weren't other books like it. "I wanted to write the kinds of books I wanted to read," said the bestselling author, whose 2002 debut novel, A Hustler's Wife, would go on to sell more than a few 100,000 copies.
While Nikki Turner's first two novels were published by a small publishing house in the Midwest, in 2004 she signed a 2-book deal with One World, an imprint of Ballantine Books, which is part of The Random House Publishing Group. After publishing the first book under that deal, The Glamorous Life in 2005 as well as a short story collection edited by Nikki, Street Chronicles: Tales from da Hood, One World quickly signed Nikki up for three more Nikki Turner Original novels and negotiated a deal with her for her own book line, Nikki Turner Presents. "I want to give new authors the same kind of opportunity I was given," said Nikki. "I want to produce authors who will be household names."

The story here was good, but completely unbelievable. I just have trouble believing a character that starts out so sweet and smart turns into a conniving woman who lets herself get involved in positions that threaten her future. I know that some will disagree and say that it's the environment she was exposed to, but I feel like she made some piss poor decisions as well.
I was also very annoyed by the amount of spelling and grammatical errors in this book. No professionally released book should make it to print with this many errors in it. It affected the way I was supposed to think about the character, as someone who valued education. This vanity press needs to hire an editor, pronto! The amount of errors in this book actually slowed down the pace of the novel for me. I had to read this for a graduate level class and all I could think was, "If I turned in this book as an assignment, the best I could hope for is a C."

I found this abandoned in the laundromat and I took the liberty of perusing a few pages. Now I see why it was abandoned. They say that a person is composed of what they eat. I believe a person's mind is greatly influenced by the materials that are put into it. This 'book' is a poorly written, grammatically incorrect piece of garbage with no redeeming social or entertainment value whatsoever. It comes from a "trifling" place of mind and it reflects a backwards attitude. Sample sentence: "The nerve of this big dyke-looking wench, she could have told me that before, when I was here the first time. I feel like smacking the hell out of her". This 'book' is the literary equivalent of dogshit on the bottom of your shoes without the good luck.

This book was utter crap. Amateurish, poorly edited, implausible plot, no writing style at all (virtually no dialog....big paragraphs of 'he said, she said). It was like reading a junior high fantacist's spiral notebook. Ugh.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like if you had all the suspicion in the world but you got so rapped up into something or someone to the point everything you lived for slowly went downhill? a hustler's wife was a friction tale between love and the fast life that comes behind it. a young girl named yarnise(yarni) fell in love with a big time player in harlem named des, yarni and des was chronically oppisite. Yarnise was and young and educated girl of color. She had dreamed of attending college to suceed and overcome her family's trac. Desmon(des) was living in the fast life...money,women,drugs and cars he dropped out of school in the 5th grade put still he became the richest man living on the south side. to know him was to respect him
Partially i enjoyed this book 65% of my time reviewing it. because of its appealing and great images and vivid vocabulary. the characters jumped out to me as if i knew them and/or could relate to them. i could picture myself in this book playing the role of Yarnise pure beauty and brains, house on a hill, no children education funds complete and headed to the future but push come to shove would trade that in for pissy hallways and shoot outs every night and life in the projects. Money doesn't by happiness and happiness doesn't buy love. i can see myself walking a yard in her shoes. sometimes things that aren't always good for us is good for us. -(Shani Hayes). i was highly betrothed in this book it wasn't fiction in the centerpiece of my eye it was real life of the streets.
Nevertheless, their is a subvision of this book which prominently botherd me. I'm not a fan to the way Yarni was treated as a whole. she gave up her education, her wonderful life and even her relationship with her mother to make Des happy and even though he was a player Yarni was understanding of that and still stood her ground and position as his wife. they got married when Yarni was 17 and Des was in his mid-twenty's. Yarnise was new to the game but Des was true to the game, he ran everything and everyone. later along the line Des was incarcerated and while time passed by he broke up with Yarni over a ciagrette and by this time she had no connections with her family the only one she had was her mother and by his commands she had lost all connections with her and Desmon's mother kicked Yarni out she had no money no friends and by now no pride. she have been betrayed by the love of her live and the only way for her to survive is to sell her body she is now introduced to the game and this is her only was out.
This book actually taught me something, everything good doesn't last forever so live everyday like it's your last and never be into someone or something so much that you betray your own mother and in the end you gave up your books for selling your body midnights in new york. the most important body utensil is the one between your eyes(brain.) Nikki Turner made a hit as a novel a Hustler's wife is one of my favortie books it has its Pro's and Con's to it but what don"t? nothing is perfect everything comes in a package with flaws as well as intutions.
Yarnise had it all planned out for her, the house, car school etc. but getting caught up between love and her own personal connections almost cost her, her life. MSG TO ALL MY LADIES .....9 out of 10 males are full of it. and unsurprisenly that 1 thats left is taken my advice is to be independent to the best of your ability. and if you think differently than never but an relationship in front of your dreams that you have put out for and to ubsurbly put your love ones out your life is insane no love is that strong

WOMEN OF SOCIETY USE YOUR HEAD STAY WISE.

Trigger warnings: romanticised adult/minor relationship, drug dealing, violence, kidnapping, murder, incarceration, slut shaming, drug smuggling, so many other things that I can't even remember all of them holy hell.

1.5 stars.

Well then. I only picked this up because I needed an urban fiction book for a reading challenge. As an Australian, I'd never even HEARD of urban fiction before. But this was rated highly and was available on Scribd, so I figured I may as well give it a shot.

I was intrigued during the first chapter where Yarni is at home and sees a news item and calls her husband in a panic. And then it's dropped into the story that she's only 17 and she's still in high school. And things went downhill for me from there.

And then chapter 2 jumps back to when she's FIFTEEN and she first meets Des, who at the time is a 21 year old drug lord. Within six months, they're "married" (not legally because her mother won't give parental consent) and he's taking her overseas for their honeymoon and Y.I.K.E.S. I struggle with romanticised relationship between, like, 17 and 19 year olds, let alone 15 year olds and 21 year olds. So this was essentially doomed to me from that point onwards.

The plot got, uh, progressively more and more bonkers, and every time I thought there couldn't possibly be another twist, there was. She's in prison. She's getting kidnapped. She's sleeping with a dude she doesn't like who has a tiny dick because he pays her $1000 for sex. She's smuggling heroin from LA to Virginia in her shoes because she wants to buy a baby grand piano. She's giving her pee to her boss to use for a drug test. She's faking a pregnancy. The whole thing was CHAOTIC and I'm honestly kind of glad about that because it meant that a hell of a lot of the time, Des is almost not in the story.

Honestly, the whole story probably would have made more sense to me if it had been put up front that this starts in the late 80s and runs through the 90s. But I was thrown by the presence of cell phones. So. Uh. Yeah.

Anyway, the story was chaotic and utterly bonkers, but the writing was awful. It jumps between third person and first person and back again within a single paragraph. There are frequent misspellings. There's typos. There's missing words. There's dialogue marks missing and in places where they shouldn't be. I think my favourite typo was "rose pedals", but my favourite things hands down - the thing that completely threw me and had me absolutely CACKLING was the description of a woman that one of Yarni's boyfriends is cheating with:
"she had a nice set of false teeth; she would take them out when it was time to give her 'state of the art blowjob'. With her having no teeth, she could suck the chrome off of a 64 Chevy."

Which, honestly, was made even MORE special by the fact that there was a page break after "she had a nice set of" and I turned the page ready for some mention of her boobs and then got hit with false teeth and blowjob skills.

As bonkers and bizarre and WTF as this book was, I *will* say that it was readable. So. There's that. But at the same time, it was VERY much not written for me, a white Australian, so it's entirely possible your experience and mine would be very different.

Pretty sure I would’ve given this book 5 stars when I was sneaking to read it at 13/14years old. At 32, I just can’t. It was just too unrealistic. The main characters were not even likable. Des was a Pediphile for one. Yarni was entitled and spoiled. She thought she was better than everyone, but she was just as bad. Sleeping with men for money & all the other mess she was doing. I swore she was a bad bitch back in the day. This is hilarious 😆

A Hustler's Wife! This triple crown production book is my favorite book of all time. This book is so good I can go on and on about it. This book was about a hustler being married to this seemed to be innocent girl. Even though the book has so many things I like about it 3 things stand out to me. The coming up, hood credit and the changes.

The coming up. Imagine a girl with a nice family, quiet with no knowledge of the hood. Being from the suburbs. Then imagine meeting a drug dealer who runs the streets. Well that is what happened in this book. I like that the book had this because this girl went from living life average to living it big. She stood by her man, he wound up buying her houses, cars, jewelry etc... She stayed with money in her pocket. Even when he was in jail she was out selling his drugs making that money, she was bringing home over $1,000 a week. That is what I like about this book. How a innocent suburban girl come up like that being taught almost everything about the hood to be out there making money while her man in jail. That is crazy it makes you think does this stuff really happen!

Hood credit! Went from nothing to something. Went from only having a little friends to being known all across the hood. In this book the girl got known. She got respect all around. She was able to sell his drugs for him when he went to jail. If she had a problem his people was there for her. She lost her virginity to him and all. She really was the top bitch in the hood and everybody knew her. She could do what ever she wanted and would not get questioned because people respected her so much. I really liked that about this book because it really showed how someone can really get respect in the hood from dating one person. It really seemed real like it could have really happened.

Changes! She went from an innocent girl to a girl behind a hustler. She went from Mrs. goody to selling drugs. She changed through out thee book. As I said before she came up and she got hood credit thats all apart of her changing. I like that she changed because when you first open the book you would think she would be good through out and he would just be the bad influence but it did not go like that. He influenced her to stay in school etc... She took it upon herself to gain respect etc...

I would recommend this book to people who like triple crown production books. This book is a great book and is my favorite of all time because some things stand out to me like the hood credit, coming up and her changes.

Summary: This book is told from the first person point of view the main character by the name of Yarni who experience an astronomical love with her longtime boyfriend soon to be her husband. This book revolves around one major plot of character v. self of a sweet young innocent girl from a well to do family from Richmond, Virginia who falls in love with a notorious drug kingpin by the name of Des and falls into the street life.
Review: Yarni’s journey through this novel explains the life style she chose to live at a very young age; she experience pain, tears, laughter, triumphs, and perseverance. Yarni was an average teenager who helps her mother with the family restaurant and made straight A’s in school. Yarni fell in love with one of the largest dope dealers in Richmond, Virginia by the name of Des; Yarni was only sixteen and Des was twenty but age did not matter, Des was pleased with Yarni mature ways she did not persuade herself as a sixteen year old. Yarni mother was not happy with their relationship; but when she saw how happy Des made Yarni and how responsible he was their relationship started to grow. Des was more concerned with Yarni education and made sure she had a ride back and forth to school stayed at top fashion and kept straight A’s; Des promised Yarni once she graduated he would pay for her to attend law school because that’s what she only dreamed of. On Yarni eighteenth birthday Des proposed and they got married. On July 02, 1996 Des was sentenced to life in prison for a crime he did not commit. Yarni stayed married to Des visited him every week and wrote letters every day; stayed in law school and graduated as an Attorney. With serving ten years in prison Des filed for his forth appeal and was granted parole with false evidence.
Theme: This story portrays the importance of loyalty to stay committed to your decision, but stay flexible in your approach.

I liked this- I would give it 4 stars but I'm going back and forth between the two. I was very annoyed by all of the mistakes in this book- there are far more in this book than any other I've ever read. I'm not as anal as a lot of people when it comes to that sort of thing and I can usually skip right over any spelling (I love it- I just spelled the word 'spelling wrong! LOL), punctuation, grammar, etc. mistakes but the amount and the extent of the mistakes in this are no joke. There were sentences to the effect of: -----"She said I won't" be going with you.----- Um, WHAT? If you can get past the many mistakes I do suggest reading this because the plot and characters are great. I loved what happened with Yarni's friend Cara, made me want to slap her in the face a few times. The twist at the very end with Des and Rico was awesome and actually, there was quite a bit in there that probably doesn't seem realistic to some but to others it most definitely would. I'd give it 3 1/2 stars.

I am re/reading the book with audiobook version which Nicole Smalls does a great job narrating (and loved her with the Ethic series by another author). I am also following this copy at work library which I found myself yelling at the book at a 23-year-old dating a 15-year-old and mother approves, right. I can see 15/16-year-old with 19/20 maybe or closer in age group. I am familiar with some young girls acting grown and date older, but mother accepting it and the hustling lifestyle. I also went off on some other parts, but this round just reading it for what it is--fiction.

The other copy read is the correct cover I have from work library which I see I read 6+ months ago already. Now enjoying the audiobook one.

This was a very good read. I became really attached to Yarni and DES! I loved how when he was incarcerated he let Yarni still live her life and get here life lessons all the while sticking by her side . Bengee was my least favorite Character , he was a whole trip and deserved everything that came his way . I love how every time a new character came in to play we learned the ins and out of each character , and that's what I learned about the writing of this book. I reccomend this as a Read .

READ EVERYTHING NIKKI TURNER! You will not be disappointed! She poured her whole heart into this series and it’s one of my all time favorites! This series is so real, so raw, so street, yet so eloquently written! This book introduces young Yarni and Des to the scene and paints the picture of how their love story began and all the trials, tribulations, headaches and heartaches that go with it. I believe every young woman will find their younger adolescent self in this story.

At first I was a little disappointed because of the grammar and the little mistakes I found, so I thought it would distract me from the story. However, I was wrong. This book was great and I found parts in it I could relate to as well. I couldn't put the book down and I look forward to reading more from her!

Yarn I has been through so much but her friend Kayla would have to catch these hands. So many thoughts on this book. First, to allow my 15 year old daughter to date a 21 year old, NEGATIVE ‼️. However, there love story was a great example of unconditional love. Kudos to the mothers for supporting them. Can’t wait to see what’s next.

I absolutely loved this book.. I think out of all the characters, Gloria is my favorite. She is the true example of what a mother is and should be. She also exemplifies the saying " there's nothing a mother wouldn't do for her child".. I just love her. Can't wait to read book 2 & 3

Sadly, 𝘈 𝘏𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘭𝘦𝘳’𝘴 𝘞𝘪𝘧𝘦, may be the reason that I put urban fic down for a long while.

I wanted to like this book, but it was 5 hours too long. I’m a reader who loves details, however, this book had so much fluff that it was hard to continue listening. It was unbelievable and ridiculous. Who lets their 15 year old daughter “marry” and be taken care of by a drug dealer???

Then there was the horrible transition in the timeline shift. I was 50-70% in when I realized the timeline shifted to the past and, as the story continued, connected with the present.

God was a constant in this story. There were prayers and church going right after explicit cursing and sex scenes. Now, to be fair, real life goes something like this, but this made the story read like a fictional autobiography at times. It was all over the place.

There was a brief ray of light towards the end, but that too was dashed. The only thing that kept me going was Nicole Small’s voice; she is an excellent narrator.

⚠️Read at your own risk.⚠️

This is a combination of fairy tale and soap opera. The main character is a middle class girl raised in a loving family. Yet, the only thing she cares about is money, money and sleeping with gangsters so that she can have fancy clothes and cars.
I did not read the book but rather listened to it. The most annoying feature was the “sound effects”. I almost returned the audiobook to the library when the first sound effect blasted my ears. I would have given it a one star but I made it through to the end. The soap opera quality made it tolerable enough to listen to during my work-outs.
I think young girls might find it interesting but unfortunately, the values of the main character are so poor that I wouldn’t recommend it.

I first read A Hustler's Wife in high school and back then, it was just the amount of scandalous juiciness I needed. Reading it again at 30, meehh.. Now don't get me wrong, Nikki Turner is THAT woman when it comes to urban literature, however, A Hustler's Wife was just not what I remembered it. Of course, as we get older, our tastes change, so maybe that's why I wasn't completely sold on it the second time around. The plot was just okay, but for the most post, unrealistic. However, the biggest problem for me was the editing! Please, it was cringy reading it at some points, and it definitely took away from the reading experience. I have part two, but I am not in a rush to read it.

This was such a good book. Loved the growth of both the main characters.

Premise: Hustler goes down for a crime he didn't commit. While he's on the inside, his much younger gf is on the outside trying to make things work. We see her go thru a number of relationships and watch her grow from an immature young lady into a fierce, God fearing woman. Along the way she makes some DUMB mistakes that almost cost her life and her future. Throughout everything these two remain strong and fight for each other. Very good story.
