A magical dark fantasy adventure for teens and young adults. A spectacular story about wizardry and witchcraft and the new boy wizard Daniel Hawthorn! This book will grip you from start to finish?
Book 1 One hour that changed the boy’s life forever.
December 1975 North Wales
Daniel Hawthorn knew he was different from the day he was born, as he lay in his mother’s arms and gazed up deeply into her mysterious black eyes. But no one had prepared him for the horrors that he was about to experience, as he ventured deep into the world of witchcraft and wizardry.
Awoken by the horrendous storm, the boy would find the evil sorcerer from his nightmare minutes earlier, suddenly standing beside his bedside. The two would battle for the survival of the rugged and magical land of Fentwell, were creatures and monsters roamed, ready to devour anything that moved.
Will the Tippling, released from his glass coffin in the depths of the old derelict mansion, help the boy on his journey or will he be part of the sorcerer’s intentions to defeat ever single wizard alive?
Can Daniel survive the horrors of Huckle or will he perish and never realise his astonishing hidden powers.
audible:This was an excellent story!I enjoyed it tremendously.Deryn Oliver was a terrific narrator.Harry Potter fans need to find this series!I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
This book has echoes of Tolkien and Rowling, and is entertaining throughout. A real page turner that takes you on a fantasy ride with a mystical creature. Can't recommend this book enough. Hope you enjoy it like I did.
Ideal for grade school readers, this story is full of mystery and enchantment. Author has created an interesting world that with some refining, could become the next “must read” serious for preteens. I received a free audible copy of this book, and this review is based solely on my opinions.
Not the usual type of book I'd read but from page one i was hooked and couldn't put it down... Well done Mike hope there's more tippling adventure's in the pipeline 🙂
I LOVED the beginning of the book, it was giving me a Jacqueline Wilson vibe- boy version, with Daniel and his less then ideal home life, his one friend, and trouble at school.
The descriptions were good, and held such gems as, 'He then looked at Daniel's face which shone amber like a light at a pelican crossing.' Which made me chuckle. However, from when they met Zezma, and entered the magical world of Fentwell, it was then mainly descriptions, I'd have loved to have seen more dialogue between the heros as they travelled and got to know eachother, as the baddies seemed to have more to say. I also wish the fact that Taff can talk was expanded. The baddies, in particular the Grotchins and how they interacted with one another was fun to read, and the whole world building felt interesting and inventive.

This charming book follows Daniel Hawthorn, his buddy Tim, and dog Taff as they go on an adventure none could imagine with creatures from our wildest dreams. Bellis does a fantastic job at painting the scene and forming bonds between the characters. A terrific book for younger readers who may enjoy a slower pace.
This is a good story for young people, though I (69 yrs) enjoyed it also. The story is a out a 11 yr old boy who get accidentally pulled into a adventure with his dog and his best friend from school. Narrator does a good job with the various characters voices and the entire storyline.
