Papa Legba: The deal is off.
Fiona Goode: Why?
Papa Legba: You have nothing to sell. You have no soul. – "American Horror Story: The Magical Delights of Stevie Nicks (#3.10)" (2014)

“No evil ever came from a woman’s womb that wasn’t placed there first by a man.’... Tantie Neptune, Lucifer's Key by Charles A. Cornell” ― Charles A. Cornell

Evil is such a simple thing. Insidious. Creeping silently on feet of fog, twisting into the home. The heart. The mind and soul. Evil. Darkness walking, talking. It slips along in the night, struts boldly through the light of day. Christians cry, Muslims mourn… but for the followers of Voodoo? Blood rains. Chicken blood. Human blood. All the same, the same, the same. Voodoo worships life, worships health and wellbeing.

Until the darkness comes.

And with the darkness, Papa changes, turns.

Popular media would have you see Papa Legba as a baby-eating, cocaine snorting monster, American Horror Story style. Nothing could be further from the truth. Papa is the guide, the communicator, speaking to the living and the dead – the guardian of the gates to Heaven. No Lwa Baron Samedi, Papa is kind. Until, as with the Christian Devil, He is twisted, changed, darkened . . .

“We used to know we were stronger than the devil”- Amiri Baraka

The Dark Voodoo reigns in Voodoo on Bayou LaFonte. The swamps have always been dark and dangerous, filled with things that go bump in the night. Things that roar, and grunt, and swallow the unwary. But now, a darker thing creeps about. A ‘thing’ that steals Remy Steinberg’s child. And if Remy, a Houston police officer, is to get her back before the unthinkable happens, he must overcome his (well earned) terror of the swamps.

I am impressed by Susan C. Muller. A Texan, she paid attention to the meanings behind Voodoo, not falling into the “If I don’t understand it, it is evil” mindset. VoBlF has a paranormal bent, but not overwhelmingly so. Instead, it is a study in the ubiquitous banality of evil. Of the monotony of ignorance and inbreeding, and the dreary predictability of avarice. I haven’t read a lot of good books lately, just because I haven’t gotten off my backside and searched them out. (Easily distracted much? Yep.) But Muller has encouraged me to move away from my ‘book slump’ and get back to reading.

If you are at all interested in a good book with a touch of voodoo, a dollop of Louisiana, and a strong insight on just how screwed up being poor in the US can be – read it. I really liked pretty much everything about it.

Voodoo on Bayou Lafonte is a January 2014 Soul Mate Publication. I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

When Remy gets an urgent phone call from his ex-wife, Gabby, telling him their teenage daughter, Adrienne has gone missing, he leave Texas and head back home to Louisiana to find his daughter.
Being is law enforcement, Remy has a little help from some old friends. That's a good thing, because they sure aren't getting much help for the local authorities who are saying the girl probably just ran away.
When Remy begins asking questions he continues to hear rumors about dark voodoo practices. He and Gabby are puzzled by the rumors at first. However, it is beginning to look more and more as though Adrienne has fallen victim to some kind of crime and not only that, she is in far more trouble than they originally thought.

This was a good paranormal romantic suspense novel. I enjoyed reading about characters I felt I could relate to. I have lived in Louisiana and now live in Texas, so I was sort of familiar with the setting. I could envision the humidity, the swamps and the wonderful dishes Gabby cooked up.

I enjoyed the romance between Gabby and Remy who are reunited after a divorce. Each made mistakes when they were younger and each have held on to bitterness and placed blame on one another unfairly. Now as adults it might be possible to forgive each other and make a life together, but first they have to find their daughter and get out of a spooky situation alive.

Although, dark voodoo practices were responsible for certain paranormal happenings, good old fashioned crime and greed also played a big part in the story.
Overall this was a well rounded novel which would appeal to lovers of paranormal romance and romantic suspense/ mystery. Overall I give this one an A.

This story starts with the most horrifying news a parent can receive. Detective Remy’s daughter is missing. After a desperate call from his ex, he heads to Louisiana. The frantic search, following lead after lead to nowhere, keeps the reader turning pages. Will he and his ex-wife found their daughter in time to save her, or is she already dead?
The passion between Remy and Gabby heats up again, but will it grow or fling them apart? Was love truly lost and can it be rekindled again, or will the swamp swallow that hope along with their daughter? Tension builds as all the couple’s efforts to find their daughter runs into a brick wall. I found this book an interesting, suspenseful read.

Voodoo on Bayou LaFonte is an engaging read from start to finish. Muller takes readers deep into the alligator infested swampland of bayou country, where Remy and his ex-wife desperately search for their teenage daughter who has mysteriously disappeared. Set in a rural Louisiana parish richly steeped in culture, heritage, and superstition, the locale itself is filled with conflict and described in such rich multisensory detail that it becomes a complex character in and of itself, welcoming in some ways and antagonistic in others.

Houston Homicide Detective Remy Steinberg loathes returning to Louisiana, the home he left behind years ago that holds nothing for him now but memories of bitterness and regret. Although the bayou will still prove to be a hindrance in his quest to find his daughter, Remy will also discover that this place still has a strong hold over him as well. During his stay with his ex-wife Gabby, he is reminded of all the good times he and Gabby shared, and he realizes that although he physically left the bayou behind, his heart has always remained here with Gabby and his daughter, Adrienne.

The contention between Gabby and Remy is thick when they reunite, and it becomes clear very quickly why their marriage failed –the lack of clear communication combined with Remy’s stubborn pride and Gabby’s quick-temperedness. Once they begin their joint search, they realize they must work through their issues if they are to make any significant progress in finding Adrienne. Both behave in some pretty frustrating ways at times, so that I can understand why they couldn’t always get along. However, unlike before, this time, they cannot just go their separate ways, not until they get Adrienne back. Despite their communication problems, the love between Remy and Gabby still lingers, and as their partnership becomes stronger, so does the intimacy between them. Their rekindled romance is mildly sensual, and the details of their love scenes are not graphically depicted. The emphasis is more on Remy’s and Gabby’s feelings and emotions rather than the physical connection.

Gabby and Remy’s relationship never overshadows or detracts from the novel’s main plot focus: to find Adrienne. In fact, all of the story threads – dark voodoo practices, illegal drug running, corrupt police officials, and swampland predators are smoothly entwined to create a well-executed plot filled with danger and suspense. The story has a clear and satisfying resolution that I must admit also left me with a craving for a big bowl of spicy Jambalaya!

I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The title of this book, Voodoo on Bayou Lafonte, and the prologue makes you think this is going to be about voodoo and how Yvonne Dupre is going to survive the visit of the highest priest in the parish. Then you meet Remy Steinberg, the hero and a Houston, Texas Detective. His life has been uneventful until he answers the phone just an hour before his weekend starts. The call is from his first ex-wife Gabrielle about their daughter, who has now been missing for 30 hours.

The call sets Remy and Gabrielle off on a constant, high action search for their daughter. They not only fight each other but also the evil voodoo of the parish, corrupt law-enforcement officials, a drug ring, and a raging hurricane. Through the twists and turns of following clues, Remy and Gabrielle also find the love they had as high school sweethearts. Will they be able to find their daughter and solve the issues that drove them apart many years ago?

This is an interesting and gripping read that makes you think about how you may be acting with your significant other as you follow Remy and Gabrielle on their journey to growing close once again.

This is the third book from this author and it reads as well, if not better, than the other two. It's a stand alone novel, and though it does connect to the previous books, you do not have to have read either of them to thoroughly enjoy this one. Like the others, this one is a detective story with a paranormal element, and more than a little romance.
I breezed through this in one day and couldn't put it down until I finished it. It's well written and has plenty of twists and turns. Both plot and character development was believable and the pace was perfect. All in all - a great read.

This book hooked me from the get go. The creepy supernatural specter of voodoo was an awesome beginning and element in the story. Remy and Gabby stole my heart in their search for their daughter. All the old feelings came bubbling up to the surface, despite all the really good reasons for things not to work. The characters came off the page, their emotions coming across flawlessly. This is an author I am going to watch and I am going to go back and read the rest of the series! Great sexual tension and a page turner! Hawt!!

Couldn't put this one down!

I really enjoyed this book! From the cop who left years before, to the woman and daughter he left behind, all the characters were believable and you really wanted everything to work out for them. Mix in some dark voodoo and some dastardly drug dealers, crooked cops, and the swampland of Louisiana and you've got one heck of a story!!!

Great read!

I really enjoyed this book. It was a little slow at the beginning, but once it got rolling I didn't want to put it down. If you like non-stop action spiced with steamy romance topped with a dollop of the paranormal and crowned with relatable characters you'll enjoy it too.

I received this free e-book from Amazon and I am voluntarily writing an honest review. This book should have been classified as fantasy because is was so far out there. Also my pet peeve, numerous misspelled words throughout the book was frustrating and distracting.

Another Great Book

I have enjoyed all of this author’s books. Her four book series in “Seasons” was great but read in order. This one could be a bit scary but the story really flowed.
A very good author to follow.

This is my review for Voodoo on Bayou Lafonte by Susan C. Miller, The opinions expressed are my own and are in no way influenced by anyone.

This book has a bit of everything. Family drama, drugs, murder, mystery and romance. Voodoo on Bayou Lafonte takes place mostly in a small town in Louisiana where superstitions run high and outsiders aren't exactly made to feel welcome. The central characters are Detective Remy Steinberg and his ex-wife, Gabby Hough. Their 17 year old daughter, Adrienne, is missing. She's been missing for 30 hours at when Gabby makes a frantic call to Remy, who is working as a police detective in Houston. From there we are off to the races. The story picks up speed and never really slows down until the great, albeit somewhat formulaic, conclusion.

Remy and Gabby married very young and though divorced, it's easy to tell that they never stopped loving each other and that the reasons for their separation really had nothing to do with love and more to do with their own youth and insecurities. Thrown together again by the disappearance of their daughter, sparks naturally ignite, and you have the romance portion. It's not overdone at all, it doesn't feel faked or forced and really does add to the story. Between the romance there is a very real tension between them as they battle to keep their wits about them while they frantically search for their daughter.

The small town sheriff doesn't seem to think that she's missing at all so he's not inclined to send out his men on a wild goose chase. They have better things to do, like play video poker. There is a bit of hilarity at the expense of the stereotypical small town police office that take care of a one stoplight town. You almost feel sorry for them, but you're smiling as Remy and Gabby put one over on them again and again in the course of their own investigation.

There is a dark Voodoo priest who seems to be the leader of some pretty shady activity. People seem to fear him and hate him but are all drawn in by his powers of persuasion. There is a bit of mysticism thrown in, so you do have to have an open mind to the possibility of the supernatural. Again, it's not overdone and it is believable to a degree. Personally, I liked the addition of a little something extra, something totally unexplainable, to the story. If it were set anywhere other than Louisiana, it probably wouldn't have worked, but it definitely did here.

I enjoyed the characters, particularly Remy and Gabby. You easily found yourself rooting for them separately and also together. You wanted everything to work out for them. I wish there had been a little more time spent on the darker side of things, a better explanation of how some of the less nice elements actually tied into the story. Some of them were a little flimsy, they had a place, but they weren't fleshed out quite as much as I would have personally liked. They still added to the story but even without them, especially the illegal drug activity, the story would have still been a good one.

I would recommend this to anyone who likes a good mystery with a little romance and a little paranormal activity thrown in. This is actually part of a series by this author, I was unaware of this until after I read the book and now I find myself wanting to go back and read more!!

Fabulous book about a divorced mother and father looking for their kidnapped daughter, who was taken by the local Voodoo Priest. I’m not one for spoilers but I can tell you this book hit all my pointers for a 5-star book. The back story was excellent. I loved the fact that the romance in this book was between an ex-married couple who, in the story, are reminded of why they fell in love in the first place. There were no steamy sex scenes but you knew what was going on behind closed doors by their actions and the subtleties the author spilled onto the pages. There was little humor but that’s because the story didn’t call for much. The author didn’t try to insert comedic relief when it wasn’t necessary. The story had an original story line and the plot did not feel “stale” whatsoever. There was enough action to keep the reader engaged from the very first page. I found myself reading very fast near the end of the book because I was so drawn into the story that I felt the minute-by-minute of my own beating heart as the story unfolded. It was almost like watching it happen and I loved the anxiety that it built within me. This is the first book I’ve read by Susan Muller and she has me hooked to read some of her other stories!

Susan C Muller's novel Voodoo on Bayou Lafonte took me by surprise. The novel has a cinematic flow; Muller attention to detail is quite great. I felt as though I was watching a movie and not reading a novel. The main characters Remy and Gabby played strong characters. I am not sure how I would have acted if my child was missing. Although this is a mystery it still held drama and romance. At thank goodness Muller did not overdue the romance factor. This was an awesome read; I did not want to put it down. Looking forward to the next novel.

The cover of Voodoo on Bayou Lafonte was pretty fitting. You have a nice looking gentleman posing with a gun, open shirt and badge. The background shows the bayou and a silhouette of a woman. The silhouette of the woman brings a sense of mystery to the novel. As previously mentioned the cover compliments the novel quite nicely.

Voodoo on Bayou Lafonte is Ms. Muller's third book in her Occult series, but it can certainly be read as a standalone. I'm looking forward to picking up the first two books of the series to read more about the other characters I've met in this book.

This was an exciting book... from page one to the last page of the book, the author kept the action going--and my heart was in my throat during the hurricane. Even knowing this was a romantic suspense, the author kept me on tenterhooks until the final resolution--I was THAT involved in the book and with the characters.

Remy and Gabby both had a lot of growing up to do...and it was wonderful to see them both see each other with adult eyes and to be able to appreciate the others' positive qualities.

I hope this isn't the end of the series. I really like these characters and would like to see them in other books and other situations.

Loved this book. Loved the setting and Remy and his ex wife Gabby kept me rooting for them all the way. This Well written and engaging romance combines mystery and suspense with an eerie touch of magic. Loved the setting. Loved the action.
While this is a stand alone book, I realized while reading it that Susan C. Muller has written two others featuring the same three detectives. I plan to read the other two

If you're from Louisiana and heard stories about voodoo, I highly recommend this book.. Not from The South? Don't let it give you the wrong idea - a majority of Louisiana's people are highly intelligent!
