Rebel without a Claus serves as a lovely round out to what has been a really heartwarming and laugh-out-loud (a lot) Christmas spin-off series by Charlie Cochet.
Established couple Leo and King are the focus of this finale, that sees them taking a huge step in their very strong and deeply romantic relationship, while visiting a Christmassy town with their found family for the holidays.
This final story basically recapped the events of the first three instalments, just through Leo and King’s perspectives, so there was a lot of rehashing of pivotal (sometimes funny, sometimes emotional) scenes, only through a new viewpoint, which was fun, for sure, but perhaps slightly more repetitive in telling than I was expecting.
However, I loved the culmination scenes very much, finally seeing what Leo had been sneakily planning across the series as a huge surprise for King for Christmas. It was romantic and swoony and absolutely everything I’ve wanted for these two opposites-attract characters since the first time they met in Diamond in the Rough.
I wasn’t expecting this series, but I’m really glad it happened, because spending more time with all The Kings and the Boyfriend Collective put me in damn good spirits this holiday reading season.
P.S. this may have been my lowest rating of the quartet, mostly because of its recap style, but rest assured Leo and King are still my favourite couple across all the interconnected series—and that hasn’t changed one iota!
Leo and King have always been fan-favourites, but out of them all, I think they're probably on the bottom of my list for this series. I did enjoy this novella though! I thought it was lovely. I just wished it were a Mason/Lucky one, or a Red/Laz one, instead. But you can't have everything, and I thought this was fun and cute and wholesome nonetheless. Leo and King deserve all the happiness, and I adored that ending so much. It made me smile, and I'm so glad Charlie Cochet decided to revisit the Kings for this Christmas series. 🥰
I absolutely love that I finished this series on Christmas Day. It's apt 😊
The last installment in these series of novellas is, of course, about King and Leo and they are getting married after about 5 years of dating and some number of months being engaged.
We find out in the last book that setting up their wedding in Winterhaven is what Leo has been up to all these weeks.
In this, leading up to the last chapter, we get a lot of what happened in the previous three books from Leo and King's perspective, and it fills in the gaps about what exactly Leo was up to when he went off on his own all the time.
I personally don't think we quite needed almost the whole novella being the lead up to their wedding. I would have rather a chapter or two showing us what Leo was up to, getting is all caught up, and then the rest of the novella being King and Leo's wedding night, then Christmas with the whole family, and maybe that reception that is mentioned as well before they leave Winterhaven.
Instead we end with their wedding - which was absolutely wonderful and I am SO happy we got to see it and it was so sweet and romantic, I loved it - and then a short bit after of them settling into their wedding night.
Which was nice, but I just wanted a little more for their wedding. Like I didn't need their POV for basically every event that had happened in the previous 3 books. Hence my star off.
Otherwise, I very much enjoyed this end novella to this series. I'm so happy we got to end this with King and Leo, one of my fave couples from the King's universe. And them getting married on top of that.
King and Leo are just so precious together. Leo is his adorable, distracted self while King, who is pretty hard and stoic with everyone else, is so smile-y and gooey around Leo. I love it.
Overall, this was a fun revisit to our King couples - although again, I think I would have wanted at least one of these to be about Mason and Lucky, another fave couple of mine from this series - and where they are in their HEA's.
Can't wait to read more from this wonderful author. Onto the next! 😍🥰😘
Leo de Loughrey is a computer genius who was very nearly caused to disappeared by nefarious black site agents almost five years ago. That’s when he was supported, and essentially rescued, by Ward “King” Kingston, head of the Four Kings Security. Their attraction was almost immediate, but they’ve developed a deeper love than either man could have thought possible in those five years.
Now that the entire crew has been jetted off to Winterhaven, Leo’s determined to find the absolutely perfect gift for Ward to show how much he loves him. He's also enlisted the help of Winterhaven’s mayor, Christopher Snow, a Santa look-alike, in order to carry out a plan that’s going to lead them both to bliss.
The story focuses mostly on Leo and King and brings along all the shenanigans that Leo’s quirky absent-minded professor persona has to offer. I expected the story to pick up where book three left off, but it instead went back to the start of book one...which wasn't expected but worked out okay. There are disappearances, chases, and lots of secret, rather shady moments where Leo and Santa collude to create the complete experience that Leo’s imagined which was to be revealed on Christmas Eve. In the meantime, King’s occupied with helping restore Winterhaven, along with rescuing missing dogs and injured friends.
We don't get to find what Leo’s gift is until the end of book #3, therefore, the whole story has the reader rolling along on Leo’s journey to carry out his big plan. Leo is a fun character, and I loved how all those around him supported him so willingly. We also found out that lots of stuff comes in fish-shaped treats. King’s support and gentle teasing of his team of agents, who are also dear friends is always awesome. This entire series has been nothing but love, fun and an homage to the previous two series. If it says Charlie Cochet, is the author; then you know that you are in for a treat.
Most of the story was what Leo was doing behind the scenes to get King's surprise. Which means 80% of the book is a glimpse through Leo and King's eyes of all of the things that happened in the past three books, and by the time the surprise comes along we already know what it is because we were told on the end of the third book so no climax there and then a couple of sweet moments and the book is over. Had we not seen the surprise, it may have been more interesting, as we'd still be wondering in a way, but as it is there was a lot less than I expected
Leo and King are my favourite couple of the original Kings series, but this is my least favourite of this set of Christmas novellas. It's basically a recap of everything that happened in the first three but from Leo's or King's PoV and as we found out what Leo had been up to so secretively at the end of book 3, there's hardly anything new here.
This whole series would have been better as one full-length novel tbh.
I loved Leo and King's story when it got going, but before it did, there was too much recap that didn't add anything new to what I had just read in the previous books.
Disappointed in this one. The others in the series were cute enough for a Christmas series, but this spent nearly half of the book repeating what happened in the first three. This could have finished up in book three.
This is the fourth book in the Kings: Treemendous Christmas series and the books are best enjoyed when read in order. The books feature the growth of a relationship of an established couple from the Four Kings Security universe.
This story really focuses on Leo and King (originally from Diamond in the Rough), and brings along all the shenanigans that Leo’s quirky absent-minded professor persona has to offer. I expected the story to pick up where book three left off, but it took us back to the start of book one, and let the anticipation build from there.
When I come to the end of a series like this, I’m primed to read on–and sad that I can’t. But the whole four book collection is nothing but love and fun and an homage to the previous two series set in this world. Readers of those books should leave satisfied–for now.
I thoroughly enjoyed this set of books as we caught up with the Kings and Wild Cards and their partners. The going away together to celebrate Christmas was a cool setup and it was well executed.
This if the fourth and final book and it does a review of everything we’ve seen in the first three books with additional information from Leo’s POV. We finally get to the point where book three left off on a whale of a cliffhanger. I would have loved a more extended scene there but it was still sweet and special.
Can’t wait for more books in the Kings universe and am anxious to see what kinds of changes are coming now that they all have agreed to cut back on work time to spend more time with their significant others.
What a perfect ending to the Kings and Boyfriend Connection's winter vacation! Leo is the sweetest of them all and I loved how hard he planned the wedding and how he pulled it off in the middle of mishaps and missing pets and it was the most beautiful and memorable wedding and it was so great that they pledged to work less so they could spend more time with their loved ones. And of course the dogs are the most adorable part of the story.
This series of novellas was everything I wanted in a Christmas read and more. A perfect blend of schmaltzy Hallmark vibes, adorable romances, small-town charm, and a sprinkle of Christmas magic - all wrapped up with Charlie Cochet’s trademark wit and warmth.
Each novella adds to the story, switching POVs between couples and offering all the romance and humour you’d expect from the Kings with an added cosy Christmas vibe. The tension comes from the crew trying to save Winterhaven’s Christmas after disaster strikes their famous ice castle, but there’s none of the action or drama from the main series—this is all about love, laughter, and holiday joy.
Highlights: Merry’s awkward but endearing crush on Noel had me giggling and swooning, especially when he blurted out that line about not thinking about sex.
Ace & Colton’s sleigh ride was pure romance perfection.
Leo’s secret scheming with Santa was so much fun - and the reveal? O-M-G, I cried.
All the little hints of Christmas magic added a delightful sparkle to the story.
And Ace… well, he got up to all the shenanigans!
Each novella brought something special:
Not So Silent Night – The crew head to Winterhaven for a snowed in Christmas. Ace does Acey things, Colton plays Christmas saviour. Leo secretly schemes with Santa.
Sleigh It Ain’t So – Jack is a workaholic butthead even on Christmas holidays (don’t worry, he redeems himself), Fitz plays match-maker, and Gio works his magic to save Christmas like a boss.
Home for the Howlidays – Nobody has figured out what Leo is up to yet! Ace breaks Joker. Joker buys a gorgeous gift for Gio. We finally find out what Leo was up to and O-M-G! Love! It's a cliffhanger, but it's okay, we get the rest in the next novella.
Rebel Without a Clause – We go back to the beginning of the Winterhaven Christmas to see it through Leo & King’s POV. I loved the opening scene from Leo's POV, he's so adorable. Leo obsesses over fish-shaped sweets. Chef's kiss!
I read this a couple of weeks ago, and writing this review made me cry because I loved it so much and it was nice to relive my favourite moments. If you’re a fan of Charlie Cochet’s Kings, this is an absolute must-read. And if you’re new to her books, what are you waiting for? Go dive into the Kings or THIRDS - you won’t regret it!
What to expect: 4 Christmas novellas: Ace & Colton, Jack & Fitz, Joker & Gio, Leo & King The novellas are 4 parts of the same story, told from the POV of different couples The Kings & Wildcards crew with the boyfriend collective Snowed in Small-town Hallmark Christmas vibes A little Christmas magic 3rd person POV Doggos! Ace shenanigans Christmas match-making - Merry & Noel “Chocolate Chip Cookie”
Rebel Without a Claus brings Charlie Cochet's The Kings: Treemendous Christmas novella series to a close and as much as I was not ready for the end, I can't think of a better way to send off their first family holiday destination vacation. The Kings and the Boyfriend Collective not only helped Winterhaven have the Christmas their town is known for but they also each found a bit holiday joy they probably never knew was lacking. Seriously, what better way to bring a bit of ending and beginning to their journeys(a bit cryptic on my part but I don't want to spoil anything😉)?
In Rebel, we finally see what Leo has been sneaking off to Santa preparing all this time that has kept the rest of his family perplexed, even his beloved Kingston. I won't ruin any surprises so that's all I'll say on that front. I had an inkling that might be where all his Santa subterfuge was headed but with Leo you just never knew for sure where his mind was running to.
I will say that Rebel starts from the beginning about where Colton originally made plans for their trip to Winterhaven seen through Leo and King's eyes, which means a few elements are "rehashed" but never in so much detail you feel the author might be scrimping on pages to Leo and Kings story. Mostly this is all about them with some earlier points of reference so we can see just where Leo's mind is at the time of the first 3 entries.
As for the men? Leo and King are just as enjoyable as they were when I first read their beginnings back in Four Kings Security #4: Diamond in the Rough. If you had any doubts that these truly opposites attract would last, let me reassure you: there was no need. They are just as much an inseparable pair of gooeyness as they were then.
If you're looking for a holiday story that brings romance, friendship, heart, love, and humor than Cochet's The Kings: Treemendous Christmas is right up your alley. If you haven't read Four Kings Security or The Kings: Wild Cards I can safely say you won't be lost as I have not yet read Wild Cards and 2 of the couples here is from that series. I'm sure knowing the full journeys a couple of mentions and feels would have made a few scenes easier to connect to emotionally but I was never lost, I was never left saying "WTF?" I highly rec the original journeys(and yes Wild Cards is on my 2024 TBR Bucket List) as they are so much fun but not having read them yet will not lessen the entertaining value of this holiday collection.
I'm going to write one review for this series and basically post it to all of them, because really this is just one big lovely holiday story about all the Kings/extended Kings/and the boyfriends.
I thoroughly enjoyed returning to this world and the idea of all of these guys just getting away for a little bit. Of course nothing can be as simple as all that in the Kings world.
Of course it's Colton (Not so Silent Night) who gets the big idea to finally have the white Christmas he's always sort of dreamed of having. And Ace will do anything to give his man the big family white Christmas of his dreams. So, King's reluctance or not they're all going to be going Winterhaven for a month and indulge in all the Christmas traditions the town has to offer. It can't be that smooth of course as the poor town's about to have a pretty un-stellar Christmas as their town hall/Ice Castle was damaged in some foul weather and they've had to cancel most of the holiday plans. Hello to all the guys as they have the perfect plan to save Winterhaven's Christmas.
Fitz (Sleigh it Ain't So) and Jack pick things up and fixing the wiring and the electricity to the Ice Palace quickly begins to show the cracks in their relationship. Fitz would do anything for Jack, but Jack's workaholic coping mechanism is driving a wedge between them that Jack is oblivious to. Sprinkle a little Christmas magic though and Fitz can find more happiness than ever, and bring along another couple along the way.
Gio and Joker (Home for the Howlidays) were always two of my favorites and by this point all of the dogs are an additional crack up. In trying to get more people into town, Gio's got the perfect plan and it brings Joker face to face with his biggest fear in their relationship. That now that Gio's health is managed he's going to want more to his life and return to the jet setting philanthropy lifestyle he's always known. Of course facing those fears will have the two closer than ever.
And running through it all is Leo's (Rebel without a Claus) secret plan that no one's party to, but somehow involves Santa, or at least the town's mayor who looks like Santa. He's got something big planned for King and is determined to accomplish it all on his own.
I loved all of the shenanigans in this story as everyone pulled together to save this town's biggest event and it brought all of their relationships a little closer together. I would have loved to see a little more of what Leo was up to (ok so I really wanted to see his interactions with Santa, especially the first one), but all in all this was a lovely Christmas story that had me smiling across all four books.
I enjoyed this Christmas novella. Rebel Without A Claus, the final novella in The Kings: A Treemendous Christmas Series. This novella was packed full of humour and hijinks that I expect from The Kings and the Boyfriend Collective, especially when Ace is involved. Even though this novella features all the characters that we’ve gotten to know and love while reading all the books in the Four Kings Universe, Leo and King are at the forefront. Leo is absolutely adorable and I love him and King together. They’re so different but they just work.
I loved seeing what Leo had been up to during the previous three novellas when he kept on disappearing. I also loved seeing Leo get all protective, especially when Miriam (Gio’s ex) was practically rubbing herself all over Gio even knowing that he was happily in a relationship with Joker. Man, the dogs are stinking cute and their personalities shine through. I’m looking forward to reading more books from Charlie in the future. I’d definitely recommend this novella, series, universe and author to everyone.
******I received an early copy of this book because I’m a member of Charlie’s Patreon. I happily reviewed this book and I would do so even if I purchased it. My thoughts and feelings about this book are completely unbiased******
This was clearly rushed. The last 90% was like reading the cliff notes for the event that had been teased since the first novella in this little miniseries. There was too much flashing back to scenes from the other books. Yeah, it was cute to get some different perspectives on those iconic moments, but with all the teasing that the previous novellas gave about Leo’s sneaky sneaking, this was a huge let down. On every level.
We didn’t even get to learn anything about Santa. He remains a mystery. As does almost every single time Leo met with him/went off on his own.
Also, because I’m me and it’s what I do, the mechanics were fair. Good enough for government work.
I’m just feeling let down. The others were so good, and then this one was… meh. Like a fun little bonus scene where they recap the series and toss in the highlights of the *big surprise*, which was also mostly meh.
3.5/5. It’s barely focused on what it should be completely focused on, the mechanics were fair, and I still say ~No😌~.
We finally get to see what Leo has been up to, and it is the sweetest suprise ever! That man is a cinnamon roll and needs to be protected at all costs. The wedding suprise is so beautiful and it just shows us how much he loves King.
King knows Leo is up to something, but he just lets him get on with it, and his reaction is worth it all. King is preoccupied with the things his brother is up to, especially Ace, because he just can't behave. Seeing the squirrel stand off from Kings point of view was hilarious. He really has to put up with some crazy stuff.
King and Leo have a beautiful relationship, full of so much love that it hurts at the seams. Kong had always been Leo's Protector, and it was a delight to see Leo do this for the man he loves. I just can't get enough of them and the sweetness; it's enough to give you a sugar rush!
All the King's will always have a special place in my heart, and I will always enjoy reading about them. This found family just keeps growing and evolving. It gives me so much joy seeing them so happy. It's goodbye for now, guys, but I will see you during my next reread.
Rebel Without a Claus is the finale to Charlie Cochet’s The Kings: A Treemendous Christmas series. It’s a sweet short read that quickly recaps the preceding stories, telling the reader what happened to the other couples from the perspective of Leo, who has got secret plans of his own for his love and beloved fiancé, Ward Kingston.
What those plans are were revealed at the end of book three, so it’s no big secret here that its a wedding. But much of the story is Leo running around, getting Christopher, aka Winterhaven’s town’s Mayor and Santa, to help him organize this and make it happen. All while keeping King in the dark about the wedding.
I wish Cochet’s story had more details about Christopher and his wife, as they are both very “Mr and Mrs. Claus” but that’s not carried out fully.
It’s sweet, romantic and very much in the holiday spirit. I enjoyed it .
THE KINGS: A TREEMENDOUS CHRISTMAS - [x] Not So Silent Night #1 - [x] Sleigh It Ain’t So #2 - [x] Home for the Howlidays #3 - [x] Rebel Without a Claus #4
Basically a recap of what has happened in the previous three entries but from Leo and King’s point of view, and I give props to Cochet for closing out this 4 book story arc that culminates in a very romantic event.
These 6 men forever bonded by their military service are finally settling down and really digging deep to be their best selves and live their most deserved happy endings with the loves of their lives. A very feel good visit, made all the sweeter with the spirit of Christmas!
This refers to the audiobook version. All of the main guys and the boyfriend collective travel to a holiday town for a white Xmas. What could possibly go wrong. Well at least no explosions so far, but lots of funny antics from all of my favourite characters. This one is the final Christmas book and acts a s the final coda which pulls together all of the threads and revisits many of the key moments through Leo's eyes, with King standing in the wings as always. A very fitting end to this fantastic series. 17 books later and the series is as fresh as it was in book 1. These characters are just brilliant and continue to entertain. There are lots of other stories that could inhabit this world, with promise of some coming int he future. I hope they do. As always Greg's narration brings these character to life. He is the best.
Rebel without a Claus is the last book in the The Kings: A Tremendous Christmas series and it ended in the most romantic way. In my opinion this is not a standalone, it is best to read the books in order. I have always loved Leo and King but this just made me love them even more. Charlie Cochet has such an amazing story telling gift. Can Leo give King the best Christmas gift ever, you'll have to read the book to find out. I hope we get more of the Kings and Wild Cards in the future. I would definitely recommend this book and anything else written by Charlie Cochet.
While I liked the rest of the series, this one, unfortunately, didn’t live up to the expectations. More than 80% is a recap of the previous 3 books, under Leo and (sometimes) King POV. The story finishes right after the wedding. We don’t see them exchanging gifts for Christmas. There’s no wrap-up of their time in the town, no goodbyes or thank yous. I know it’s hard to put everything in less than 100 pages but perhaps if the focus was less on the recap and more on the wedding itself and the connections they all made with the people in town before leaving would be more fulfilling.
Unfortunately this book fell really short after the other three.
My main issue is that's basically a recap of the previous three stories from Leo's point of view but without a lot of additional extras and hardly anything more about his strange behaviour.
Also, the book ends really abrupt. It felt I am missing book 5, the actual Christmas Day and what happens with all the friends these guys made over the weeks.
I love how King and Leo fit together but it left the series with a slight disappointment.
This is the fourth and final in the short series 'The Kings: A Treemendous Christmas' series and needs to be read in order IMO. I am so sad to see it end, but so happy to finally find out what Leo has been doing, and of course Santa is going to marry him to King, who else?!? I hated to give this one four stars, but it just didn't read as well as the other three in the series, while it was great, it was just kind of a retelling of the other three books and then just drops when they marry, I wanted to read so much more, but maybe Charlie has something else up her sleeve.
This is the first book of the series to skip back to the events of the beginning and start from there. It makes sense as everything Leo has been doing had been kept secret, so we follow from the start to see his POV about the vacation, what he has been planning, and how the plans have been going through. It was just a slightly different perspective from what everyone else saw and did, and it leads to the ending that was in the third book. A sweet story and a good ending for this little Christmas vacation adventure!
Rebel without a Claus, Is the final book in The Kings: A Treemendous Christmas series which is the latest 4-part storyline in the series. I absolutely love everything in the Four Kings universe series and can't tell you how many times I constantly re-read all the stories. This storyline will be special to me for future holidays. Please keep them coming Charlie Cochet!!
Leo had the most perfect Christmas surprise for King. I love Leo and his beautiful heart so much. The way he loves his family is unmatched. King is so serious and gruff, except when it comes to Leo. Then he is a big ball of mush. It was fun to see the events of the other three books from Leo and King's perspectives. The sheer amount of thought and detail that Leo put into his surprise was amazing. Thanks for the great Christmas novella series.
So out of all of these, this one was probably my least favorite and that's just because I read them all one after the other and during 80% of the book, a lot of it was already stuff from previous books just from King's or Leo's POV but I always have trouble during books that are happening at the exact same time as a previous one in the series where there's a lot of cross over scenes. But it was really cute to see Leo surprise King with getting married!
Shoot, I was really looking forward to this one, but it just didn't hit the mark. About 75% of it is just rehashing the plot of the first three books, and even seeing it through King and Leo's eyes didn't add too much. I really wanted to see more about their relationship and the wedding came nearly at the end so we didn't get to see much after it. As my favorite couple, I was hoping for a little more.
