When young social worker Raina Hughes arrives at a ramshackle trailer outside of town, she’s on a mission to protect a small boy from abusive parents. But when Detective Wade Jackson arrives at the same location hours later, his mission is far grimmer: investigating Raina’s murder.

The victim’s vicious death is a shocking event for laid-back Eugene, Oregon—and even more chilling when one of Jackson’s fellow officers suspects an elusive rapist whose appetite is turning murderous. Jackson thinks he’s got a tight case against the meth-head dad who menaced Raina, but the evidence seems to leave his suspect in the clear—and a homicidal sex offender still on the loose. What Jackson fears is that his new love affair with nurse Kera Kollmorgan may be knocking him off his game. And what he never expects is to find an ally in savvy reporter Sophie Speranza, who may have stumbled on the killer’s shocking motive. But even as Jackson and Sophie team up to tighten the noose, their quarry zeroes in on his next victim—ready to take his twisted game to the next level.

Another very good mystery that was well developed from several different angles. Nothing is quite what it seems. A little more information changes the picture quite a bit & the ending was very good. This one centers around rape, murder, & lesbians. The latter specifically in the way people react to homosexuality: the gays, those who don't care, & those who think it is a sin. The setting & author both seem to be quite liberal, so I wasn't surprised that the MC was upbraided for being indifferent & ignorant. As a cop, he should be better informed, I suppose.

I was surprised when a bisexual woman thought to herself that sex with a man was more intimate than with a woman. That doesn't make sense to me. (If anyone would care to enlighten me, I'd appreciate it.)

Well narrated, although the narrator constantly spells out B.O.L.O. instead of just saying 'bolo'. He does the same with at least one other well known acronym - CODIS. Irksome.

I'm looking forward to reading more in the series. They stand alone well, but reading them in order is a good idea.

I'm of mixed feelings about "Secrets To Die For." On the one hand, it's a fast-paced police procedural, with lots of authenticity and plenty of crisp plotting. On the other hand, it feels like a triumph of craft over art, a perfunctory product of how-to-write-a-mystery exercises, workshops and how-to books.

There's no original writer's voice here, no dialogue or descriptions that make you say "Wow!" and no characters that developed well enough to inspire ongoing emotional connections for readers — a strange disconnect given the lurid subject matter of the story. Especially disappointing is the failure to give develop Eugene, Oregon as an enticing setting — given that the real Eugene is bursting with rich personality.

The book simply lacks flavor, in my opinion. I'd like to see the author, now that she's developed her craft, take a cue from the masters of her chosen genre and develop her ART by spicing up her characters, settings, dialogue and descriptions in risk-taking, original fashion. Ultimately, readers become loyal to series authors because they love the central and recurring characters — but I really don't feel like I've been given any reason to feel invested in the flat, one-dimensional Wade Jackson and his colleagues.

I wish the author well, and will probably browse her next efforts — but won't buy unless I perceive that subsequent books are necessary improvements on this one.

(Further tipping the scales for me are a number of distracting line-editing errors.)

An Amazing Series!

A rapist is targeting homosexual women. Detective Jackson is asked to investigate. A CSA volunteer is found murdered. Are the cases connected?

The characters are likeable. There is an unexpected twist near the end. I plan on reading all this Author's books.

A second book in the Wade Jackson series, with two rapes and a murder to solve. A good police procedural, with a twist in the plot at the end. I will carry on reading this series

I signed up for this book and won it from the giveaways. When I first started to read the book, it was very dark and I almost didn't want to finish it because I didn't think that it would end happy. I'm glad I did because this was one of the bes mysteries that I've read and I've already recommended it to all of my friends.

Terrific. Read it!

Few books achieve this level of drama and tension within the narrow confines of what is credible, realistic and relatively ordinary. Real people caught up in a chain of prejudice and ignorance which costs lives. Detective Jackson is a winner.

I live and grew up in Eugene, so it was really fun to read a mystery set here! The author did a wonderful job of capturing the feeling of Eugene, while making it a bit grittier, as a murder mystery novel needs. She also did a great job injecting awareness and social justice into the themes of the novel. Jackson is sympathetic, but has a lot to learn, and he does so believably and gracefully IMO when it comes to the LGBTQ community. The book is a tiny bit dated in regards to attitudes (in the PNW) towards lesbians, but that's part of the point I think.

Secrets to Die For. L.J. Sellers. 2010. Echelon Press. 286 pages. ISBN 1-59080-654-9.

L.J. Sellers' Secrets to Die For is an incredibly dark murder mystery about a serial rapist who targets homosexual women. Secrets to Die For is very unpredictable, and will have you turning the pages with rapt anticipation and genuine interest!

Detective Wade Jackson investigates the murder of a young social worker, Raina Hughes, who is found brutally raped and left for dead near the home of a meth addict whose son was under Raina's supervision. As the investigation unravels, we find out secrets that connect the previous rape victims whose lives were spared. Raina's lover Jamie Conner soon goes missing and readers follow Jackson on his pursuit of the killer.

I found Sellers' Secrets to Die For very morbid and disturbing, which makes for a sincerely creepy murder mystery! It was unpredictable to the point of leaving me wondering if the novel would have a happy ending in bringing the killer to justice or if we would be left frustrated should more victims die. Once I began reading Secrets to Die For, I couldn't take a break and read it all in one sitting because it was that exciting.

Although I have finished the book, I feel as if I still need to warm up to Detective Wade Jackson. I found his honesty endearing when he admitted being ignorant to homosexuality in general and I can understand that detectives are hardened and cold, but overall I didn't feel as if we really got to know him. I felt closer to supporting characters Jamie and reporter Sophie Speranza because their inner monologues were more personable and revealing.

I am looking forward to reading more of L.J. Sellers mystery series featuring Detective Jackson, and I am curious to see how his character develops in future novels. Readers should start with The Sex Club, which is Sellers' debut novel featuring Detective Jackson.

ONE OF SELLERS' BEST IN THE DET. JACKSON SERIES

THIS WAS A FLUID FAST MOVING PAGE TURNER. JUST WHEN I THOUGHT I KNEW WHO DID WHAT, ANOTHER CURVE BALL WAS TOSSED. GOOD CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT, PLOTS, AND A MORALITY/BIOLOGICAL ISSUE THAT MAKES YOU THINK HOW YOU AND OTHERS VIEW HOMOSEXUALITY. ALTHOUGH, MOST PEOPLE HAVE ALREADY MADE UP THEIR MINDS ON THE ISSUE, SELLERS INSERTS GOOD ARGUMENTS THROUGH HER CHARACTERS FOR ACCEPTANCE. I STRONGLY DISLIKE THE EUPHEMISMS USED FOR LESBIANS. I KNOW SOME MEN WHO THINK IT'S FUNNY, BUT I FIND IT HURTFUL AND IGNORANT TOWARD LESBIANS. I HAVE SOME GOOD FRIENDS WHO ARE GAY AND THEY ARE THE KINDEST AND MOST ACCEPTING PEOPLE I KNOW. BRAVO FOR THE AWARENESS THAT THIS BOOK BRINGS TO CULTURAL DIVERSITY AND THAT IT MIGHT EVEN CHANGE JUST ONE PERSON'S ATTITUDE FOR THE BETTER. WARNING: THE GAY ISSUE IS ONLY A SMALL PART OF THIS BOOK. THE REST IS JUST A GREAT MYSTERY!

I bought this one after finishing the first book in the series (The Sex Club) and I have to say it only gets better.

This second book in the series provides a tighter and more compelling story as Detective Jackson works his way through a complex and frustrating case that challenges his own assumptions about society.

Nothing is as it seems in this case, where a young woman social worker has been brutally murdered and raped, following on from two possibly linked rapes. Sellers keeps the suspence running to the end.

If there is one thing that frustrated me it was that the backdrop story of the romance with Kera Kollmorgan is largely missing, with large chunks of her story skipped over in this book. I had looked forward to seeing more of her, after her strong part in the first book.

This book does well as a fast paced police investigative story and that was my only expectation thus the four star rating. There is a good deal of believable detail for the crimes and solutions.

If you're looking for more depth of character and location ambiance, you will likely be disappointed. Some effort is made to portray Eugene as the setting but it lacks enough attention to give depth. Characters are mostly flat and the opportunities to add dimension are mostly avoided, noticeably so. It felt at times as if the author either felt there wasn't time to spend on character or that it didn't matter and might even detract from the story. As this is supposedly the first in a series allowing readers to connect on a deeper level with characters does matter.

I WAS REALLY LIKING THIS BOOK, UP TO ABOUT 85 OR 86%, THEN IT STARTED GETTING STUPID. I THOUGTH
"DOES EUGENE, OREGON HAVE KEYSTONE COPS"? IF POLICE ACTUALLY BEHAVE LIKE THIS NO CRIME WOULD EVER GET SOLVED. OMG! WTF? THE STORYLINE WAS WORKING FOR ME EVEN WITH THE SOAPBOXISH DIALOG REGARDING GAY MISTREATMENT, UNTIL EVERYTHING GOT STUPID. SINCE THIS IS A SREIES I GUESS I WON'T FIND OUT HOW DETECTIVE JACKSON'S PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP TURNS OUT, 'CAUSE I AM SO D.O.N.E. ;<

This is the second LJ Sellers I have read and she is a wonderful author. The story opens with a murder that on the surface looks like an open and shut case. It soon becomes clear that there is more to the case than Detective Jackson had imagined. The story twists and turns right to the end and it is far from predictable. It is great to read an author who knows what they are doing and is able to bring a really good ending to the novel that leaves a reader satisfied

The book started out great. It was face-paced and left me wanting more. As the plot unfolded so did the familiar soapbox preaching of the progressive left. When the lead investigator was scolded by a woman he had interest in, for not viewing homosexuality the way that she did, it began to overshadow the mystery. She instructs, "until you see that homosexuality is as much as an inborn trait as brown eyes and not a choice, you are part of the problem". "I said I don't know", replied the detective. "Well, then there is some hope for you", she granted.

ALL behavior is a choice. I can chose to act on my feelings or not. In this generation, the sexual feelings of gays should not be denied. Yet heterosexuals also have sexual yearning for other outside of marriage and exercise self-discipline - or not.

I'm sure it's big business and shown to be cutting edge to espouse these views. There are plenty of options of great books to read without having to tolerate the incessant sermonizing and then passing judgement on those who do not think in the same "progressive" manner.

I'd recommend passing on this one.

It was an ok middle of the road kind of murder. It does deserve some trigger warnings for LGBT folks. It discusses homophobia, gay bashing and the rape of lesbians. Slurs are used by the bad guys. Even the good guys are struggling with homophobic attitudes. This shit does happen and I think they do a decent job talking about it though it does feel very dated considering how much attitudes have changed.
I'm not a huge fan of the bad guy being bipolar since I don't think their portrayal of the disorder (which I am diagnosed with) is accurate or fair. We need less stigma against people with mental disorders and writing them as delusional woman hating murderers doesn't help.
Overall it's well written and a quick read

3.75*s - The second book in the series and it's not bad. I quite like the way the author makes the detectives that little bit human and go wrong - not sensationalized. This story is all about a rapest who is attacking woman with what would appear to have no common traits or connections. The rapest then appears to escalate in violence into murder. Nothing as it appears, quite a few good twists - frustrating sideline with detective Jackson's girlfriend - hope that resolves in next book!

SECRETS TO DIE FOR. by LJ Sellers "Detective Jackson" # 2
A domino effect, when a social worker, with attention for the child,,lets go of her safety area. Which led to secrets, lies and murder, would Jackson find the common thread. How far does one go to protect their children.
A thriller that has several themes that come together, of the young figuring out who they are. Readers will get a tense flowing plot to the end.

A terrific series

This was a tragic, heartbreaking, complex, and suspenseful story that will keep you guessing until the very end. A definite must read.
I would definitely recommend this book, series, and author.

Before reading any of this series, look for the correct reading order in the beginning of each book. The list on the Amazon series page is in the incorrect order for at least the first 5-6 books.

I liked the idea for the book. I really liked the fact that the police didn't somehow immediately ID the killer, and went down a few false paths.

Sadly, the writing was slow and dry. I didn't feel like any of the characters were developed well. The plot felt like it moved slowly up until the very end.

Well ,as usual, political soap box for this author. Additionally, why she always makes her lead character "A DAY LATE AND A DOLLAR SHORT". I think I'm done with this author.

This book definitely had its share a twists and turns. Dynamic characters immediately drew me into the story and the plotting of the mystery kept me guessing all the way to the end. If you enjoy mysteries where telling the good and bad guys is hard to tell, you'll love this book.

So-so

Plot was fairly decent but emphasis on homosexuality ruined it for me. AND I dislike being forced to use a certain number of words in my review.
