Meh. This could be the summary of this story. Total meh. And this is why:
1. The writing seemed pretty amateurish to me, there was no flow, too many sentences started with a "but", and it was all about what everyone did - I still have no idea whatsoever what any of the characters here ever thought. Or if they thought at all.
2. I didn't care for any character in this story. While the MCs were mostly okay, I didn't have any connection with them. Frankly, I didn't care what was going on with them which isn't a good sign. Generally, I thought that the characters' behaviour was pretty questionable and unbelievable. Dropping a kid you supposedly like on an unsuspecting dad without even calling first? When nothing's childproof and absolutely nothing is prepared? How could the kid feel not abandoned when something this abrupt happens? And even worse, it seems as if no one takes care of any of this, is childproofing things, buys a child seat for the car or looks up what a kid needs - nutrition-wise for example.
3. Julie never gave any trouble. Not seriously. What kind of kid is she? And the way she talks... nope, doesn't sound like a 6 year old to me.
4. The sex scenes were absolutely uninteresting. I love good sex, but this was... meh. I skipped them sometimes. Do you know what it takes for me to skip sex scenes? ...
5. I was bored! Since the kid didn't offer too much of a plot and Tyler and Jack didn't have me emotionally engaged at all, th 141 pages e-book version I bought seemed about 100 pages too long.
6. Why do the main characters have to be so gorgeous all the time?
I'm really sorry to say that there isn't much here that I can praise. I don't give this one star, because I only give one stars if book content personally offends me or if it makes my head shake the whole way through or both. This didn't make my head shake - it simply left me completely and utterly unaffected.
... To be honest, I really regret right now that I already bought a second book by this author without having read any of her stuff before. I shouldn't do this - I know I shouldn't. But I just can't say no to a gay romance with a kid book. *sigh*
I really did not expect anything much out of this one. I was thinking this was just another book about two men and a child. What I got was totally unexpected. I don't really think rating this a 4 was possible, but it is impossible.
I giggled my way through this book. It was fun, fast paced, filled with ridiculous ideas out of the mouths of babes, out of queens and immature men. Instead of getting irritated, I was totally enchanted. There were so many ridiculous things going on here that it was no surprise we got a happily ever after ending.
Have you ever seen a movie or read a book which was so over the top and ridiculous within a mindless plot and yet came out laughing and just plain had a good time? Unexpected Dad is one. I was happy reading this and I came out smiling and giggling at the very end.
Lighthearted, ridiculous, sappy and yet not sappy. Just a plain enjoyable light read with the requisite HEA.
This was a weird book and I'm struggling how to rate it. I picked it up because I liked the premise of the unexpected kid showing up and becoming a dad. The execution of this was very oddly done. Julie's reactions to things were not what I expected from a 6 year old. She's introduced to a father she's never met and has no issues whatsoever being dropped off with a strange man. Then Tyler introduces Julie to her sister, another stranger, and Julie is willy-nilly; no temper tantrums or hissy fits or anything.
I liked the relationship between Tyler and Jake but the telling us about their past sexual episodes together wasn't really hot. This is a relatively short book but it felt like forever to get through it.
This book a was a serious disappointment. I figured with all the "rave" reviews, there had to be so etching here. There wasn't. Yes, it was a cutesy idea of a gay man finding out years later that he has a daughter. Yet, the writing wasn't that good, the characters (while interesting) were just characters that didn't have a whole lot of substance with the. For instance, what grandmother (step grandmother or not) dumps a 6 year old off with a father they've never met and then keeps coming back to check on them? None. Irritating.
The premise was great but this book gave me a headache. The MCs were confusing and living a neverending youth. Also, they have feelings and sex with each other but not a relationship!!!!!
Suddenly a cute 6 years old daughter appears and the " lovely" non couple is forced to grow up.
I enjoyed most of this book I just was a little disappointed the 2 guys because they couldn't get their selves together to realize that they wanted more than just occasionally doing each other. They obviously had a deep connection but took Tyler finding out he had a daughter before him and Jake saw they should be dating and then engaged instead of just best friends who had sex.
Julie was dropped in her dad after her mom and then grandpa died. He didn't know about her because when her mom came to tell he told her his news first that he was gay and she left never saying a word until the day Julie arrives with suitcases and her step grandma who was nice his couldn't raise her.
Tyler along with his best friend Jake who he met in college and helped him be his true self along with their friend Jo, who's hilarious, and Tyler's mom and sister they set out raising Julie who is just adorable. She has her own opinions and she'll let you know them.
Tyler used to be a partier but Julie changed that and she helped change Jake as well. We get flashbacks to the past sexual encounters that Jake and Tyler had until they finally book up again and I was laughing with the way Tyler proposed since it wasn't the normal way. Julie more so did it though with what she said which was cute.
They only other issue had with this was couldn't figure time period on how much was passing unless they mentioned a holiday. Love Trina's books so I keep reading. Also Julie's 6 not 2 as my book said.
This was a cute story about a lovely little girl whose presence helps two men figure out they were meant to be together. It took me a while to warm up to Jake but Tyler had me the moment he embraced being a father.
This heart melting love story begins with Tyler becoming a father to Julie. He enlists the help of his best friend Jake. This was a beautifully written story about how two gay men are taught by a six year old there is more to life. This is a light and fun read that is very entertaining. The story moves quickly but at the same time is very well developed. I though it was very funny with the interactions with Julie. This is a wonderful story. I highly recommend it!!
Kind of confusing without an immediate clue that going into past encounters of Ty and Jake hooking up. Which is also incomplete. No known reactions or actions following up on each of these encounters.. like, how is it not awkward especially when they go back to BFFs? How is it played off the morning after, swept under the rug, discuss that they are better as friends, what??
That's all I can think of that bugged me the most.
This book had so many wonderful characters. Jo was awesome and so freaking funny. Julie was a loving little ball of fire. And Tyler and Jake were exceptional as a couple. The sex was hot! Thing was they were a couple long before either of them even realized it. I truly hope they get married and the three of them were a loving family.
I was stunned that Tyler took to becoming a dad so easily, it was wonderful. And Julie was an awesome kid who just wrapped everyone around her fingers. Jack was too funny about trying to hide the way he felt about everything. You just knew from the beginning of the story that they were meant to be.
I really thought this book was promising .. but it just blew .. the beginning was pretty good but it just went down hill from there .. ): I really wanted to like it .. but I couldnt even really finish it .. I just skimmed the last couple chapters .. I had to return it .. ):
Julie was very cute. I liked how the guys interacted with each other. I just couldn't get into the writing style, I feel like I was reading an instruction manual: He did this, then he did that, put part A in slot B, make a full turn clockwise... It just didn't appeal to me.
One day after 6 years later he opens door and finds out his a father of a little girl he had no idea he was one. Back in the days he pretended to be straight had a girlfriend, So now its time to to adjust become a dad and find love with his best friend jake, another nice read.
The story and characters were crafted with such emotional honesty, I was charmed to bits, though a good editor would have given the writing some more polish. A terrific read for a high stress week.
