Clavering Chronicles #1

Uma Mudança Inesperada

Rate this book

Selena & Lucius
She’s forced to take a job in the aftermath of a scandal with her father. He’s tired of everyone trying to get him to settle down, as he’s perfectly happy being a bachelor.

They meet when she shows up at his door when her carriage breaks down. His first impression is not a great one, but he slowly realizes there's more than meets the eye with Selena.

Another hoopla bonus made me read a genre I typically don't, and I didn't hate it. Of course I can’t stand the jealous girl who thinks she should just get everything handed to her, though. I did like the slow burn of Selena and Lucius getting to know each other. The conclusion is satisfying.

Not sure yet if I'll read the rest of the series that follows Lucius's siblings, Philippa and George. I did like their sibling relationship.

Narration notes:
She did fine.

From my endorsement:

A Fall from Grace is a sweet Cinderella-story of a Regency romance, with threads of Austen and Heyer. Jennie Goutet’s writing admirably evokes the era, giving her characters a romantic—and believable—happily-ever-after.

This was a nice story. Poor leading lady gets drug threw the mud and it is hard to not root for her. I didn't feel very connected to the characters, it was the kind of book that just told the story and didn't get my feelings too involved. It was a good story idea I just really wish everyone would have gotten a little carma in the end for how they treated her. The love story was slow building until I realized it had only been a week! They had some nice moments but it was slow to happen. This is very chaste except for mentions of her being a mistress to another man.

An endearing story of a down on luck heroine and a weary hero.

Selena Lockhart is forced by circumstances to be a companion to cantankerous old Lady Harrowden and Sir Lucius has sworn off females whose only whim to get him to the altar, but soon finds himself very interested in the events that surround Harrowden estate.

The romance that develops is sweet and I loved how Lucius accepts his mistake and admits to having committed wrong in standing up for Selena. The sibling relationship was altogether lovely, Philippa and George serve as the conscience of Lucius, and quite amusing to see how they take their elder brother to task for failing in his duties.

A quick and easy read historical romance perfect for a break in the afternoon siesta. 🌧️ 🌧️ 🌧️ 🌧️

A charming Regency that reminded me of the Georgette Heyer books I binge-read in high school! The story revolves around the plight of impoverished Selena, once an eligible member of the ton, who must now make a living as companion to a crotchety spinster. Many characters around her are shallow & unfeeling in their privilege--as she used to be. Among these, Selena's compassion & strength of character shine--even enough to call out to the better nature of a handsome, saught-after bachelor & draw him out of his isolation. The story ends with a happy new beginning for Selena & hints of what is to come in the remaining books in the trilogy. I thoroughly enjoyed buddy-reading this story with an Instagram bookclub from new-to-me writer, Jennie Goutet.

It would appear Jennie Goutet has a thing for fixating on a few words per book that she keeps repeating relentlessly throughout it. In this case Sir Lucius Clavering wants to enjoy peace and quiet.

On the other hand we have Selena Lockhart. Again un utterly infuriating and straight up stupid woman. This victim mentality just doesn't sit right with me and it seems that Jennie Goutet has a predilection for such female characters.

The short novel I'm reading now might be the end of the road for me and this author.

This beautifully written book proved to be endearing in all the best ways. Ms. Goutet's ability to capture romance without overdoing it with unnecessary dialog makes every part of the book move swiftly and easily to a well-won ending. As an added treat, I listened to the audiobook on Author's Direct, and the narrator's voice and interpretation really matched the style and pace of the book. This book really makes your day!

Selena Lockhart's life is not at all how she imagined it would be. She, her mother and siblings are still paying for the scandal her father caused, and because of their fall from grace, her fiancé called off their bethrothal. Now Selena has taken a position as a paid companion to Lady Harrowden, a somewhat cantankerous elderly woman. Her carriage has an accident on the way to her employer, and she knocks on the door of Sir Lucius Clavering for assistance. Sir Lucius has come back to his country home for solitude and some peace and quiet, but isn't finding it as young ladies in need keep coming to his door.

This is my first book by the author, and I listened to the audiobook of it. We all love the Regency stories of balls, and falling in love, but society was not kind to those who didn't live up to their standards. Selena and her family are paying the price for her father's sins, which were all his own. No longer attending balls, she's trying to survive and help her mother by becoming a paid companion. Simply put, Selena has swallowed her pride and does what she needs to do.

Lucius, a Baronet, is tired of the matchmaking mamas parading their eligible daughters in front of him at all the social events and has retired to his estate for some peace and quiet. Instead of finding peace and quiet he's drawn into the events going on at Lady Harrowden's home, and slowly falls for Miss Lockhart. I liked the changes that Lucius made over the course of the story.

Selena handled Lady Harrowden a lot better than I would have. She kept giving her more responsibilities, but I don't know how she expected Selena to accomplish them and still be her companion and be at her beck and call. I didn't like Lucius' sister at all. She struck me as very shallow--she wanted to set Lucius up with a young woman who had somewhat questionable morals, but looked down on Selena because of her father's disgrace, and then to invite Selena's former fiancé to her ball was the cherry on top!! I don't see how Selena and Lucius forgave her for that.

I own a copy of the ebook, but received a complimentary copy of the audiobook through Authors Direct. All thoughts expressed in my review are my own.

I was thoroughly enjoying this book right up until the last quarter of it. It seemed to be wrapping up quickly just to give the main characters a happy ending, while I felt like there was a lot left to the story. Though this could be lending to the fact that it’s a series. There were plenty of clichés and a fairly predictable plot, which I wasn’t upset with, but I was a little disappointed in the main character. She’s a docile heroine without a lot of substance. The most interesting characters to me were the main love interest and some of the side characters. Overall it was a sweet regency romance, very Jane Austen-esque, which is what I was looking for.

Regency Cinderella meets a hint of Pride & Prejudice. Just what I needed to get out of my reading slump: a sweet clean regency with an entertaining meet-cute. 🥰

My first Jennie Goutet novel and won’t be my last!

Nitpick: I found it jarring to have the hero’s first name in his proper title. Shouldn’t Sir Lucious actually have gone by Sir Clavering?? I thought Christian names were only to be used with the closest relations so this bothered me. Someone please correct me if I’m wrong, but we all know it’s Mr. Darcy, not Mr. Fitzwilliam…

I also wish the heroine had a little more backbone and that the hero had to struggle a little more for his grievous error. But those aside I still really enjoyed this!

Can’t wait to start the second book. Hoping for another delightful lighthearted read.

Loved this audiobook version of A Fall from Grace by Jennie Goutet. The narrator was especially good and did a fabulous job bringing each of the characters to life.

I loved the premise of the story. A young gentlewoman whose father died leaving the family in disgrace is now the companion to a wealthy dowager. As she travels to her new assignment, her carriage breaks down and she ends up seeking help on the doorstep of Sir Lucius Clavering.

Having just escaped one near entrapment, Sir Lucius thinks this is just another woman trying to trap him into marriage. However, once he realizes Selena is telling the truth about her circumstances, he offers to deliver her to destination. Surprisingly taken with the soon to be companion of his neighbor, Lucius fears his gruff treatment at their first meeting might have hurt his chances with her.

Lady Harrowden is not an easy woman to please, and with the arrival of her nephew and ward, Selena’s hands are full trying to deal with the demands of all these people and keep her position. Sir Lucius manages to find excuses to visit his neighbor and her lovely companion. Selena must constantly guard her heart because she is in real danger of falling for the handsome somewhat irascible Sir Lucius.

This book gave me a Pride and Prejudice feel especially with the main characters. I loved Lucius! He’s definitely not a pushover, but he does have a tender side. Like Darcy in P&P he’s proud and also prejudiced against women in the sense that he thinks they are all after him for his money and title. I enjoyed watching his character grow and change. Selena like Elizabeth is prejudiced against the upper echelons of society. She thinks that because of her father’s downfall that she will never be accepted and is unwilling to even entertain the idea of Sir Lucius because of his station.

It’s a delightful, well written, regency romance with witty dialogue and an enjoyable story. I’m excited to read or listen to the next book in the series!

In a society that denigrates a person purely for the sins of the father, Selena Lockhart has no place to show her face. Having been publically shamed by her ex-fiancé, Selena realises that if her family is to survive she has to make her own way in the world and earn an income. On her way to Lady Harrowden as a companion, Selena's journey is interrupted as a result of a carriage accident and ends up on Sir Lucius Clavering's doorstep. Only she has no way of knowing that she is not the only young lady to make her way to his hunting lodge that night. This novel has moments of wit and humour, but mostly it is emotional and the heroine's pain is well portrayed and keenly felt. Lucius is a cynical man and he soon realises the errors of his ways when his heart becomes entangled in Selena's plight. After making a monumental mistake, one that earns the rebuke of his younger siblings, Lucius finally comes to a place where he knows that if he does not set matters straight, he will lose the most significant relationship of his life. The plot is clean and romantic, jerking the heartstrings, making one feel deeply for Selena and her situation. Lucius' actions were dishonourable at times, but I was glad that as the story ensued, he grew a backbone. This novel is standalone and comes to a very happy conclusion, a copy of which I received as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.

2.7 Stars ⭐️⭐️Though Lucius and Selena’s meet cute was unorthodox, it was funny and unique, especially for a historical romance, and I thought it was a great start to their story. Lucius was a bit grumpy and cynical but secretly charming while Selena was intelligent, good natured and sweet.

I hated how Selena was treated due to her change in station. It was so upsetting she had to endure such treatment that it was impossible not to cheer for her and call down fire upon her opposers. I really wanted them to get what was coming to them…but alas, no such retribution occurred, which was disappointing to say the least.

Lucius and Selena were great characters but I wish they had more depth. While there were some cute scenes and the H & h had some nice interactions, it just seemed shallow. It would have been nice if they had more of a backstory to better understand their motivations, etc. In my opinion, Lucius and Selena didn’t have that many interactions that would warrant their strong emotions for each other. I just didn’t really connect with them. 🤷🏽‍♀️ Plus that ending was abrupt and unbelievable. The story wasn’t very good…but it wasn’t too bad either.

The good? The author doesn't have a terrible style and this is properly edited.
Plot? 🙄 Characters? 🤦‍♀️ Ending? Exists. The male lead is a wishy washy asshole who dismisses all of the heroines VERY VALID CONCERNS with a "my opinion should be the only one that matters" and "no you're the prejudiced one not society. Pay no attention to the fact that MY SISTER deliberately engineered your humiliation at a recent ball. Ignore the abuse you get from your employer, that I've noticed but choose to ignore because it doesn't serve my current purposes. And how DARE you doubt me! The fact it's been a very short period of time since I deliberately turned my back on you when MY SISTER'S deliberately engineered public humiliation plot was enacted is not more important than my boner!"

Traditional regency. This had a subtle spiritual
message. Selena's late father caused a scandal
and his survivors paid the price.

Sir Lucius (a baronet) & Selena (a late gent's dtr)
learned to trust & love each other. Several annoying
people took up space in this book. But good, non-
judgmental people mostly balanced this out.

This story proved that first impressions were not
always accurate & forgiveness went a long way.
The hero, when tested, fell down on the job, but
later proved to be Selena's champion.

I have heard a lot of good things about Jennie Goutet’s writing. Well, I finally got my hands on one of her books—ebook to be exact—and now I know what all the fuss is about. A Fall from Grace (Clavering Chronicles Book 1) was an amazing read. I could hardly put it down. At one point I was practically yelling at one of the characters I was so frustrated and I had to remind myself this person isn’t real. Seriously!! If you haven’t read this book, you are missing out. I’ve already downloaded Book 2 ;)

Sir Lucius Clavering was once rake, but was now too busy trying to make his time his own and avoiding the commitments that his family demanded of him. He was certainly a fine catch in the eyes of marriageable young women, and he found himself often accosted by their scheming ways.

Selena Lockhart was a gentleman’s daughter, but he had squandered all of the family wealth and then drank himself into an early grave. Once one of their shining stars, society now shunned Selena, as well as her family due to the scandal. She finds herself seeking employment as a companion to a cantankerous old woman, who is known by and lives close to Lucius.

Both Lucius and Selena had come to terms with the fact that they never wanted to get married, and both fight the attraction they feel for the other.

There were many rave reviews for this book, but I thought it was just ok. The ending I thought was silly (who can be casual and find humor during a carriage crash?), and it seemed very selfish and rude when the two of them went off for days to do their own thing, when they were entrusted to take care of something else. The HEA sorta just fizzled and had no excitement. Very clean romance. First book by this author.

This book had a lot of things I liked about it and a lot of things I didn’t like about it. So much so I had times that I would want to throw my kindle across the room or keep reading to find out what happens next.

I really liked how Rebecca had that one moment of realization that her actions affected how her life would be, even though she kind of threw it all away. I also really liked how Selena realized she needed to stop being prejudiced to the people she thought were being prejudiced to her. I think there were a lot of good messages in this book.

However, I felt that the romance in this book needed a bit more development. It kind of felt like Selena and Lucius just loved each other all of a sudden without that many interactions and moments to connect. It felt rushed. I was at the end thinking where did all these feelings come from? That is my main critique.

Overall I think this book was a little better than okay. I would probably recommend it to someone I know likes these kind of books but to no one more. (I should probably also mention that I was in a bit of a slump reading this book and that really affects how I see and review things)
