This book was well-written and at times extremely insightful, detailing the author’s personal experiences as well as those of their patients. The problem? Rather than delivering on its title’s promise, the meat of this self-help book serves more as an extended advertisement to hypnotherapy without providing any within its pages. And perhaps the author has delivered some success through their practice, but I cannot speak to that from experience because sadly, this book delivered no actionable advice.
Really just 100+ pages of marketing using triggers
So I'm still waiting on the part where we talk about reconstructing reality. What I got instead was an author who users triggers to get you to look into their hypnotherapy practice.
Reading this you will not be given actionable techniques that can help your practice or start you on your journey with hypnosis. What you will get is an author telling you how people with trauma have come in and got help through the author's practice. Reading this you won't get science backed with citations to show the amazing benefits of hypnosis. Reading this it becomes clear you're getting sold to.
This book should come with a trigger warning since the author uses virtually every trauma and tell that it was cured with hypnosis and NLP but never mentions how or the steps. Why would the author offer the how or the steps when you can visit the author at their practice.
This book should be called triggering you to buy a hypnosis session. Save your time and read a real book on hypnosis or NLP so you can actually reconstruct reality.
Amy Rosner does such a good job with this book going over her experience with the brain, hypnotherapy, and sharing examples. I’m not sure I can be hypnotized, but would love to try to be one day!
Amy Rosner draws from her research background in psychology, neuroscience and philosophy as she presents a thoughtful view of hypnotherapy as a science, based on her years of practical experience as a hypnotherapist - and she even provides the odd tip derived from Neurolinguistic Programming (aka NLP).
Amy notes, however, that she has never really hypnotised anyone: that’s something we do for ourselves - she just helps us along that path.
The opening chapter alternates between presenting cases based on her clients, and connecting to relevant research and historical and modern ideas - and the book is punctuated with clickable footnotes/endnotes (if your device/app is working properly, clicking on a footnote number should slide/pop up the relevant footnote - and clicking in the endnotes will take you to the relevant place in the text).
The closing chapter is similar, but with a broader range of quotes and a broader encouragement to let your subconscious out. In fact, the main message of the book is that we shouldn’t use hypnosis to relive that bad experiences that lie behind our blocks, but to review them at a distance in a safe context so our subconscious can let go of them. So we can let go of adaptive programming that might have been a good idea at the time but no longer serves us.
And in between more interesting evidences of how her techniques can help.
Overall, I found the book enjoyable and thought-provoking - and if a reader lives in Amy’s vicinity she sounds like a great therapist to see if need be.
However, for me it would have been more useful if it had more “showing” and less “telling”. She tells us about client problems, she even tells us about what was causing the problem or block, and tells us of how reviewing it resolved the clients problems.
But I’d have liked to have seen Amy help the client into a state of hypnosis, teach the client the art of help-hypnosis, experience the process she is telling us about. But she doesn’t really show any of this.
I thought maybe Amy could write (or had written) a book focussed on showing/teaching this process…
In fact, if you don’t stop reading at the end of the last chapter but continue to the Thank You at the very end, you will learn that Amy does have a 24/7 Self-help Library we can sign up for… I might just take a look!

Reconstructing Reality is a fascinating exploration of the mind-body connection, written by a hypnotherapist with a background in neuroscience, Amy Rosner.
Rosner dismantles complex concepts like consciousness and memory into bite-sized pieces, making them accessible to a wide audience. The book is packed with real-life stories, like the inspiring tale of young Jake who overcame his fear of flying through hypnotherapy.
Rosner argues that by tapping into the unconscious mind, we can rewrite negative thought patterns and limiting beliefs. Backed by research and case studies, she presents hypnotherapy as a powerful tool for personal transformation.
Whether you're interested in personal growth or simply curious about the workings of the brain, Reconstructing Reality offers valuable insights and practical strategies for living a happier, more fulfilling life.
I genuinely think everyone should read this book and could glean something helpful from it. It felt like a guided introduction to meeting and understanding your own subconscious for the first time, which is impactful for anyone with a subconscious, aka all humans.
Reading this helped me better recognize some of my own mental blocks and look at my own subconscious thoughts (and myself as a person) with more compassion and empathy.
The author’s hypnotherapy expertise is simply fascinating to read about and she is very fair in also acknowledging the value of other therapies, medication, etc. in addressing mental issues.
Truly a great read for anyone, as we all have a conscious/subconscious interacting in our daily lives, and this book brings more awareness, intention and control to those interactions. Super short but impactful read, highly recommend!
Read this while watchin my kids during swim lessons and honestly it was the perfect poolside book haha. Easy to follow but crazy deep at the same time. I was takin notes between sunscreen breaks and still got so much out of it. Chapter 2, “Birth of a Block,” totally blew my mind... not just the highlighted parts but the whole thing. It got me thinking about stuff I’ve been carryin around without even noticing. The way this book makes you reflect without feeling overwhelmed is something special. It felt like talking to a really smart friend who actually gets it. I’ll be rereading this one again for sure, probably with a pen in hand and my kids splashing nearby again lol. If you're ready to learn a bit more about yourself without the heavy lifting, this one’s it.
In 'Reconstructing Reality: Outsmarting the Brain to Rewrite Our Life Stories,' Dr. Amy Rosner explores how our brains construct our reality and, more importantly, how we can actively reshape it.
I found this book, Amy's experiences, and the examples of how to apply hypnosis and NLP hacks and practices in our lives to help overcome fear and blocks incredibly fascinating. It made me want to hire her for a few sessions!
Reconstructing Reality reminded me to trust my body, unconscious processes, and the images and emotions that hold so much wisdom (before the interpreter part of the brain filters it).
I loved the blend of neuroscience, cases, stories, and applicable practices. It was such an empowering and inspiring read. Highly recommend it!
Amy Rosner, goes further and deeper into the understanding of neuroplasticity and hypnotherapy. She explains how the mind manufactures and reconstructs our life stories, giving you practical strategies for upbeat changes. Impressive is the ability of Rosner to combine all this neuroscience with practical advice, rendering complicated ideas clear and comprehensible to the reader with the intention of making profound changes in his mental and emotional landscape. This book is heartily recommended for its depth and clarity in dealing with brain science for personal growth.
This book draws you from the first pages into the life of the author and his career developments. He then reveals to you various examples of how he has transformed the lives of his patients from the edge to the edge through his tactics. With great wisdom to share that the reader is curious to know how he too can change his life - the talented writer and therapist explains in an understandable and everyday language the saying that what you see is not what you believe but what you believe is ultimately what you see.
A well researched and insightful book. Story based examples keep the pages turning. Many favorite parts but one in particular was learning about neuroplasticity as an alternative to medication and all the wicked side effects that come with it. Great read! Recommended!!
This is a book which talks about the benefits of hypnosis and is mainly advertising the author's hypnosis services. She shares clients stories and quotes and also talks about the science behind hypnosis. Ultimately there is no 'how to' guide for self hypnosis in this book, which is a bit misleading in my opinion given the title.
A passionate argument for hypnotherapy and against over-medication, this inspiring book uses the author’s extensive experience to illustrate the power of rewiring the unconscious. Simple adjustments, such as describing traumatic events from a third person perspective to reduce their personal impact are potential step-changes. A new outlook.
As far as I can tell this book is a thinly veiled advertisement for the author's services. The author repeatedly brings up cases of patients that, "after one session, were completely cured!" without any explanation of the techniques or root cause of their problems. This seems to be the meat of the book, there is no real substance or useful information to be found within these pages.
If you are someone who gets in your own way, this book is for you! It will walk you through how the brain works against you and how to outsmart it with a couple different approaches. It's very interesting to read how the brain gets wired and rewired.
While well written I found that the subject did not really interest me. I felt it didn’t really offer any answers only pointed me in the direction to travel to find the answers. I am sure some readers will really enjoy this book but it wasn’t for me.
This book taught me a lot I didn't know about hypnosis. Dr. Rosner illustrates how simple, yet powerful it is to use your own brain to heal body and mind.
