The Hunters #1 & 2

The Hunters Boxed Set, Books 1 & 2: Declan and Tori, Eli and Sarel

Rate this book
Book 1:

Tori McAdams was a sensible woman. She didn’t believe in hocus-pocus, she didn’t believe in ghosts, and she definitely didn’t believe in vampires…not until the night she was attacked by one. Alone, starving and afraid, she doesn’t know what’s happening but at least she had somebody to turn to…

Declan Reilly was normally the last person she’d go to for help, but now he was the first on her list. He can help; she knows he can. She never could have planned on what happens next, though…the sexy detective is so much more than he appears.

Warning: This book contains violence, sex, more violent, a maniacal murderer, sex, more violence, and a menage or two thrown in for good measure.

Book 2:

Three centuries is a long time to spend alone…but Elijah Crawford is used to it. He’s got his friends, he’s got thugs to kill, and a mild obsession with an on-and-off again lover to keep him occupied.

But then a woman appears in his dark world, one who just might bring some light to those endless nights. Just one look makes him hunger. Just one glimpse makes him burn.

There’s just one complication. She wants him dead.

Sarel Chandler knows all about vampires and she knows all about monsters–or so she thinks. The monster she knows as Elijah Crawford is responsible for the death of her sister and she’s going to see that he pays for it.

There’s just one complication…she’s completely wrong…and she’s about to pay for it in so many ways.

Warning: This book contains a pissed-off witch, a sexy Master vampire, some serious ménage action and lots of one-on-one time…of the up-close-and-personal variety. And I do mean lots…

i even managed to like these for the plot and not the rather amazing three way action. no really, i did. i swear. it's a nice change to see the "monsters" of the world getting together to form a council to save the humans and non alike from the criminals and those who would prey on them. of course adding in a healthy dose of previously mentioned three way scenes didn't hurt any either.

I liked the two stories in this book and look forward to reading more of this series in the future. The sex is frequent and steamy, but the relationships are decent for such short stories.

I started reading book 8 in the series, fell in love, and had to go back to the beginning. I purchased the paperback when buying books online was just getting popular (hard to imagine that time). This paperback contained book 1 & 2 in the series: Declan and Tori, Eli and Sarel.

Wow. Just wow. This is the first book in a new series, so it has a difficult job of introducing us into a new paranormal world. I got swept in right along with the main protagonist Tori. She knows something unexplainable has happened, and she seeks out Declan just knowing deep down he can help. I liked the way this book develops the world and you learn what is what along with Tori as she is thrown into the thick of it. Declan is a wolf so he knows enough to explain the basics to Tori. There are some things about her that he cannot explain, and is unsure how or why certain things don’t make sense about Tori. These two get together and the chemistry is off the charts. They can’t fight the need between them and things heat up fast.

We are also introduced to another character, Eli. He is a much older Master Vampire who should have more knowledge to be able to help Tori figure out her new place in life. This is the book first book I read that introduced ménage… and just wow I’m speechless. Not only does the book get into all the smutty details, but there is the paranormal factor that just makes these relationships connect on a deeper level. This author presents a concept of “bonding” which I found utterly fascinating. To have the idea that you are bonded with another for all of eternity, knowing their feelings and thoughts, knowing you’d perish if away for too long, knowing this deeper connection beyond anything you could’ve imagined before… That’s the stuff fairy tales are made of right?

So in the middle of Tori figuring out her new life, there is a lot of sensual exploration, and a looming threat on her life that she must prepare for. This book has a small amount of action in it, it focuses more on explaining the rules of this universe. There might be too many steamy scenes for some, but I find the author is trying to use the sensuality to develop the connection between the characters.

The second book develops Eli’s story with Sarel. Sarel thinks Eli has harmed her little sister and is out for revenge. Is she ever in for a big surprise when her plans backfire on her… These two have great character development together. Once again we learn a little more of this universe and the backgrounds of more characters are introduced as well. This book is full of denying feelings, intense banter and chemistry, and of course there is lots of heat between the sheets.

I recently read (and loved!) Shiloh Walker’s stand-alone paranormal romance novel, ‘The Missing’. I had been meaning to read a Shiloh Walker novel for some time, based on the solid recommendations of many fellow paranormal-romance lovers who highly recommend her work.

So I decided to give her long-running paranormal erotica series, ‘The Hunters’ a read. This series is currently eleven books deep, and have recently been re-released to include two-stories-for-one.

I was really excited to delve in Walker’s world, especially with the memory of ‘The Missing’ fresh in my mind. Sadly, I found these books to be quick, throw-away reads with little substance but lots of smuttiness.

Declan and Tori: BLURB

She was just doing her job, tracking down a nutcase who was stalking a young dancer. And then the unspeakable and impossible happened. She was bitten.

A newly turned vampire, Tori is alone and starving and she doesn't know what to do. But she knows who to turn to—gorgeous, mouthwatering Declan—a police detective who has a few secrets of his own.

Tori is a private investigator on the hunt for a psychotic stalker. This guy is a real nut-job, believing himself to be a ‘vampire’ and frightening his victim so much that she’s also convinced of his fanged bloodthirstiness.

But it’s too late for Tori when she learns the truth – vampires are real, supernaturals stalk the night and she has just been bitten . . . and is turning into a vampire.

She turns to the person she trusts most in the world – a local cop called Declan who she has been lusting after from their first meeting.

Declan can smell the change coming on Tori, because he is a werewolf. He can also smell that she is his mate, his to protect and save from the crazed vampire who is hell-bent on making her his master. Luckily, Declan is a werewolf and can offer a helping-hand with Tori’s transition . . . while at the same time succumbing to their mating bond.

“. . . Humans hate change. Hate trying the unknown.” She led him to the broken down recliner in the corner and curled upon his lap. “Why are you telling me all of this?”
Running one hand down her back, savouring the warmth of her flesh under the silk shirt she had snagged from his closet, Declan said, “I do not know what it is like to live with the monster you now have inside you. But I understand not being completely human. You’re not alone.”
He could feel her smile against his chest, feel the warm caress of her breath through the shirt he wore when she whispered, “I know.”

- Declan & Tori

Walker’s first book in ‘The Hunters’ series feels like half a novel. Reader’s are instantly on the back foot because Delcan and Tori have known (and worked) with each other for months already. Her as a PI, and he has her police informant. They have been fighting a burning attraction since their first meeting, or so we’re told.

It’s hard to play catch-up with this couple and really feel the attraction that Walker tells us is scorching between them. Honestly, it felt like Walker was rushing their romance so she could jump right into their bedroom sport (of which there is PLENTY).

I have no problems with a good bit of erotica. And paranormal-erotica is a particular favourite of mine . . . but even I need a bit more build-up and back-story before being thrown into such scorching sex scenes. It felt like Walker did a slight cheat by putting all of Declan and Tori’s attraction down to months of pent-up sexual frustration and yearning.

Things get particularly heated and ménage when Declan takes Tori to a vampire master friend of his, to show her the ropes. Elijah Crawford feels an instant attraction to Tori . . . and the three of them engage in some more bedroom shenanigans.

Once again, instant attraction + lots of sex didn’t really equal ‘hot’ to me. It all felt rushed, and slightly dirtily-lascivious in the wake of Declan and Tori’s bond (effectively a marriage). And I again felt like Walker copped-out by putting it down to (yet another) instant attraction between Eli and Tori. . .

Having said that, I was very intrigued by Eli. He is a very old, very lonely vampire – and while he enjoys his ménage with Declan and Tori, he also harbours a burning jealousy for what the two of them share. Knowing that Eli’s novel was #2 in ‘The Hunters’ series kept me going when I was experiencing some serious scepticism . . .

Eli And Sarel: BLURB

After three long centuries of aching loneliness, Elijah Crawford, Hunter of the Council, has finally found a woman. Maybe she can replace the obsession he has for Torrance Reilly, the wife and lover of his best friend.

Sarel is a lean, red-haired, wild-eyed witch with a soul to match his. She has a thirst for justice, and a yearning for a love to fill the void inside her. Sarel has been searching for Elijah. She is here now, prowling his grounds, waiting to get into his house.

Sarel has come to kill him.

Elijah Crawford is a centuries-old vampire, but he’s lonely and bored as hell. For years now he has watched his best friend reap the benefits of love with the women Eli also harbours an intense lust for. But what Declan and Tori have is not meant for Eli. And when a witch, hell-bent on misguided vengeance, sets out to kill him he almost welcomes the release of death-oblivion.

What he doesn’t count on is an intense attraction to the witchy hellion, and what he is willing to do to keep her, forever.

I quite liked the character set-up for Eli in book #1. He’s that lovely sort of tortured hero – ancient and lonely and on the brink of ending his mortality.

This series started to perk-up for me when Eli meets his mate in the most unusual of circumstances – with her hell-bent on murdering him.

But then Walker lost me again by skipping the novel ahead five years and (conveniently) saying that both Eli and Sarel had been pining for one another throughout those five years. . . urgh. Half a decade worth of wanting and lust and Walker just breezed over it and (once again) went straight to the sex.

I was really impressed with Shiloh Walker’s stand-alone paranormal romance thriller ‘The Missing’. That was a novel of sweet yearning and complex characters, and I thought that Walker’s first forays into paranormal romance would follow along similarly heatedly-multifaceted plot lines. Sadly, no. The first two novels in her ‘The Hunters’ series are cheap tricks; full of smut but little else. Admittedly, the first five novels of the series were published by Ellora’s Cave (notoriously smutty), while the last three books (with slightly naffier front-covers) are Berkley Sensation publications. It does look as though the series was improved over time . . . . but, honestly, I can’t be bothered wading through books 3 – 7 to get to the good stuff.

Admittedly, Walker knows what she’s doing when it comes to writing bedroom sport. Those scenes were gratuitously sexy (and if you want a bit of easy, sexy reading then I highly recommend) – but when there’s no characterization or plot to back it up, the books deteriorate into cheap erotic thrills.

Hunters: The Beginning contains the first two novellas in Shiloh Walker's Hunters series - the stories of Declan and Tori and Eli and Sarel.

Declan and Tori does a surprisingly good job of introducing the paranormal world of the Hunters, while also including a plot and some smoking hot love scenes - all in 159 pages.

28-year-old Tori is practical, sensible and doesn't believe in fanciful superstitions - until she suddenly finds herself attacked by one very real, very nasty vampire. Tori fights back and the vampire turns her then leaves her for dead, believing she will not survive the change. Tori manages to seek out Declan, a friend and cop for whom she has always lusted. Declan has a few secrets of his own, and introduces Tori to a world of Master vampires and shifters.

Declan and Tori includes m/f/m menage which is very well done in the context of the story and actually appropriate to the plot. Although there are the usual limitations with novella length stories, the characters are well drawn and do elicit interest in their own right and for more than just the sex scenes. 4 stars

Eli and Sarel does not fare quite as well. Eli is a centuries old Master vampire who has waited a long time to find a mate. Having been a main character in Declan and Tori, I was really looking forward to reading Eli's story. He is very honorable but very lonely and I felt quite sad for him. While you do learn a lot more about the Hunters, and other paranormal elements like witchcraft are introduced, the relationship between Eli and Sarel is unsatisfying on nearly every level. This is a shorter read at around 135 pages, and the limitations show. 3 stars

I just could not get into this book. I like sex in my romance books just fine but this book felt like the story line was just a way to get to the sex scenes and then even those felt rushed. I don't know if it was becuase these were short stories and it is always hard to develop a good story line when you are constrained by the length, but I just couldn't get through this one. Looks like this series is not for me.

I thought this was a very good book. If you like vampires and shape shifters, you will like this book. A fast read that you don't want to put down. After I read the first book, I bought all the books in the series.

I like the way Shiloh Walker writes.

Love this series!

Got the original ebook when it first came out, and loved the characters. Yes, the sex is explicit, but this is actually mild compared to some of the newer books out in the market. It was the storyline is what caught my interest. If you don't like the strong sex scenes, then this book (and series) isn't for you.

Honestly, I can't believe I read the whole thing. Here's the premise of the first story: Girl gets turned into vamp. Has sex. Has some more sex. A tiny bit of plot. Even kinkier sex. Sex, sex, sex. And more sex than plot throughout the remainder of the story. Honestly the redundancy got really boring. Now, I knew this was erotica (or Erotic Romance as it says on the spine) going into this, but I had read that there was a good plot in there too. I would think even erotica would have at least equal plot with the sex, if not slightly more. Maybe I'm wrong, I don't know, this is the only book in this genre I've read. And seeing as it does say it's also a romance, I would expect some feelings and emotions behind all the rutting sex in almost every possible sexual situation known to man (and wolf), but no, there's nothing there. The second story is slightly better in the love territory, but the plot is a complete disaster. While I didn't care for Tori in the first story, I hated her here. What a *bleep*! And if there's nothing I despise more, it's a Mary Sue; every guy wants her, she's this perfect creature, et cetera, et cetera, excuse me while I throw up. And it's carrying it too far that everyone hates Sarel and she has to suffer that much because she made a big mistake, but geez, deal with it! She knows she was stupid and wrong, and Eli forgave her. Bunch of hypocrites.

So it sounds like I totally hated the book, not so. The ideas are solid and in between sex scenes in the first story, it was well-written. So overall, not the worst thing I've read, but far, far from the best. I do have another in the series sitting here that I'll give a try, although I think it might be my last one by this author, unless she goes strictly romance.

For an essentially erotic romp, there actually is an interesting story here which I'm looking forward to continuing although...be warned, it is overly melodramatic.

Declan and Tori
Tori, a private detective, is approached by a young dancer who claims to be stalked by a vampire. A claim Tori soon discovers is true when she is attacked by the same vicious vampire. Warned by a bodiless voice, Tori hides until she can get to Declan, a cop who has been after her for some time for help. Together, they discover how Tori differs from a vampire and together they travel to see Eli, an old, old friend of Declan's. And a good thing, because the vamp that turned Tori is seeking her, attempting to kill her. To break his hold, Declan and Eli must distract her and give her the strength to tear away from his influence...whew...what a way to break!

Eli and Sarel
As much as Eli loves Tori, she belongs to Declan and Eli is aching for a partner of his own. A partner he has sought for over 300 years. Still, he has managed to bring meaning to his life through his work as a Hunter for the Council. Between assignments to take down feral wolves, vampires, and witches, Eli fills his time destroying evil: men who prey on those weaker than themselves. Unfortunately, Sarel is so blind with rage that she refuses to see the good that Eli does and she goes after him with a blood curse.

Tori and Declan are so attuned to Eli that they feel it when he is struck down by Sarel's poisoned arrow. Only Tori's blood is keeping Eli alive as they wait for one of the Council Healers to help him and as they hunt for the witch who brought him down.

Somehow, they must convince Sarel to willingly give of her blood to counter the curse she laid on him...

Woah! The Hunters series is straight-up "smut," in the vein of 70s "smut" novels (the ones with the awful titles and noir-ish covers). Only the premise of the characters has changed, and even then it's not a far leap from the primarily Neanderthal male characters (generally werewolves in Walker's work) and "smart but sexy" tough females with bewitching charm (generally witches in Walker's work) of those 70s novels in Walker's hands. There are vampires and werewolves and witches, sure, but their stories and the story lines are sandwiched between "erotica" scenes so often that it's difficult to follow the story at times and very little effort is given to story, as a whole. These books also seem to be suffering from a lack of good editing more so than any other paranormal romance series I've read, and there's a confusing sequence in the published books overall. Read only if you're paranormal fan who thinks Hamilton didn't go far enough in her sexual descriptions or are a serious fan of paranormal romance and want to make certain that you're up on every series or just a fan of smut (and a particular kind of smut, because all of Walker's characters screw each other the same way), but skip otherwise.

This book is erotica, so if that's not your thing, stop reading.

This is two short books rolled into one volume. The whole series is violent contemporary/urban fantasy with really huge breaks in the action to have sex. Honestly, I didn't even know this series was erotica when I put it on my Christmas list. My brother in law bought it for me - slightly embarassing. Fortunately, he didn't realize it was erotica either, though we had a good laugh when I told my husband.

The first story is about Tori becoming the uber-good guy vampire extraordinaire, and her mate Declan, a high-powered werewolf. Oh, and sometimes their good buddy vampire Eli. There seem to be plenty of threesomes in this series. I think I read a short story about Tori and Declan before she became a vampire in a romance anthology, but if so, it was much tamer than this book.

The second is the story of the afore-mentioned Eli and his homocidal mate Sarel, who happens to be a witch. And sometimes Eli's friend Byron. (I said there were lots of threesomes.) Happy endings all around.

A horrible start to an apparently very popular series. I've read Walker's "The Missing" which I loved but this book is a far cry from that book. It took be months to read this book. I kept picking it up, reading a few pages and then putting it down again.

The book is mostly sex and no plot. The little plot and story you do get is so utterly butchered. I cant believe this thing got published and the reason for its popularity is beyond me.

I have the next three books but I'm not sure if I can stomach them. Can anyone tell me if her writing improves?

Enjoyed Tori and Declan's story but wish the character's were more developed. Eli and Sarel's romance has less depth and it is hard to feel much empathy with any of them. I get the need to set up the "hot" parts, but was hoping for more. We'll see with the next.

Of course I loved this book! I love paranormal loves stories with drama, love, fighting, and steamy sex scenes so I loved this! It's not for anyone who can't handle steamy scenes so of course I think it was fabulous.

I like a little more story and romance, less threesomes and more twosomes... I read where the books go more this direction later in the series when her publishers are changed. I will probably continue along to see, seeing how I already own these.
