A stunning new rural romance from the bestselling author of The McCalister Legacy and Summer at Kangaroo Ridge.
Felix Carrington helps run the family's wedding venue business as the in-house wedding photographer for Carrington Farm. His personal passion though is taking glorious shots of the region around him.
And it's through an unlikely friendship with 84-year-old Winnifred Knightly that Felix is able to take frequent photos in his favourite place, Peppercorn House with all its faded grandeur and mysterious history.
Winnifred Knightly still grieves over the losses of her childhood but in her long life she's learnt to be grateful for the present. She believes herself to be an excellent matchmaker and plans to bring her 'adopted grandson' Felix and her favourite aged care worker, Jasmine Clarke, together as her final project.
However the past has the power to impact the present, whether that's from the long buried secrets of an old house or the scars of a bygone relationship. For Felix and Jasmine to have a future, they must face these ghosts of the past.
Jasmine Clarke and her five year old son Liam moved to Kangaroo Ridge when her husband Declan declared it was over. Declan lived in Melbourne with his floozy and she was happy to get away from him. Kangaroo Ridge was a small country town near Bendigo and Jasmine had a job caring for the elderly at Lakeside, where she met eighty four year old Winnifred Knightly, the wonderful, caring old woman who owned Peppercorn House. It had been in her family for generations and now she was the only family member left.
Felix Carrington helped run the family wedding business with his job mostly as the photographer. The camera was his last gift from his parents, and he used it well, creating images which were startling in their beauty. The wedding parties were always in awe of his talents, and as his work became known, he started holding exhibitions. Felix knew Winnifred well, as she wanted him to take photos of Peppercorn House and its gardens. One day while he was visiting Winnifred, Jasmine came in to her room. And Winnie came up with a plan...
Peppercorn House is a thoroughly enjoyable read by Aussie author Nicole Hurley-Moore and it was lovely to catch up with characters from Ms Hurley-Moore's previous books. Liam was adorable, Winnie was wonderful and the Carrington siblings and aunt an absolute delight! Highly recommended.
This story is so very beautiful, it is heart-breaking and heart-warming at the same time, with a cast of wonderful characters, I loved being back in Kangaroo Ridge with the Carrington family, this visit will Felix find the love of his life with new comer Jasmine?
Jasmine Clarke arrives in Bendigo looking for a new start in life for herself and her young son, Liam after her partner left her for his boss’s daughter, she takes a potion as a care worker in the local aged home and loves it, she makes friends with resident, eighty four year old Winnifred Knightly, who lived most of her life in Peppercorn House in Kangaroo Ridge and they have become fast friends and Jasmine thinks of Mrs. Knightly as a grandmother.
Felix Carrington helps run the family wedding venue business at Carrington Farm and is an excellent photographer and does most of the wedding photography he is also very good friends with Mrs. Knightly who has given him permission to take as many photos as he requires around her beautiful Peppercorn House, the house that is over one hundred years old home to the wealthy Darcell family and said to be haunted.
Winnifred although she has come to terms with the loss of her eleven year old sister Alice all those years ago while on a family picnic at home, but she never forgets Winnifred feels that she will never know as well but she gets on with life and sees herself as a very good at matchmaking and she has set her sights on ensuring that Felix and Jasmine will find the love they both deserve.
When Jasmine and Liam move into Peppercorn House for a short time this brings Felix and Jasmine closer together but there are a couple of people who think that they should not be together and cause a few problems and with them, will they find their happiness, will Winnifred ever find out what happened to Alice?
I do highly recommend this one, I cried and I smiled throughout the book, Mrs. Knightly is one is the most caring, loving and beautiful people and Felix he is the best ever hero, I love him so much and Jasmine she is beautiful on the inside and outside, this one is beautifully written filled with all sorts of emotions and one not to be missed. I do hope we are back in Kangaroo Ridge soon, because I really think Seb and Gemma need a story of their own.
Many thanks MS. Hurley-Moore for a fabulous story, I loved it.
My thanks to Allen & Unwin for my copy to read and review.
Thank you Allen & Unwin for sending us a copy to read and review. Part of the elite rural romance squad, Nicole Hurley-Moore has continued her Kangaroo Ridge series with the next exciting book, Peppercorn House. A delightful, fun and engaging read that is surely worth capturing your heart. Jasmine Clarke and her son Liam arrive in Kangaroo Ridge to heal. Soon she meets Felix Carrington and she is smitten. Jasmine works in the local aged care and enjoys her time with her favourite patient, Winnifred Knightly. Felix enjoys being a photographer, working in the family wedding business and he enjoys taking photos of Winnifred’s family home Peppercorn House. The manor has a past and is full of ghosts. Making one final decision and with her sad history, Winnifred plots to bring the two together. I consumed this book in two sittings, eagerly knowing I was in for a treat. Feeling welcomed by the community and the Carrington family, I was satisfied by the plot, characters and drama in front of my eyes. What we have come to expect from this talented author is an enjoyable tale of rural living, romantic elements, happy endings and a small historical thread to elevate it to the next level. Offering a good mixture of them all to give the reader a pleasing reading experience. I’m hoping to return to Kangaroo Ridge in the near future.
Wait. Peppercorn House is part of a series? I wish I had known that before beginning! In saying that, though, this served well as a stand-alone.
There's something for everyone here. A mystery spanning over seventy years. Romance in the air, between our hero Felix and heroine Jasmine. Even a haunted house (so local lore states). Oh, and a meddling elderly lady (Mrs Knightley, you knew EXACTLY what you were doing, setting up Felix and Jasmine. You're a rare gem to boot!)
What I especially loved was what this novel represented. I'm talking about strong family values. It's evident with the Carrington clan, big and noisy as it is, the Darcell/Knightley's and even Jasmine and her little boy, Liam. As wise old Mrs K states, family is who you choose.
Peppercorn House was a stellar read, one that will stick with me for quite a while. I absolutely adored the setting and characters (bar a couple). Nicole brought every element to life, which is the mark of an accomplished author.
I didn't expect to enjoy this as much as I did and I'm looking forward to reading more of her novels!
The Carringtons from Summer at Kangaroo Ridge are back in a new story with brother Felix and newcomer to town, Jasmine Clarke and her young son Liam. I really enjoyed the last story, it was easy to read with good family tension, a past tragedy, and very real tricky family dynamics to negotiate through. This is more of the same, with the character focus slightly different - and an unsolved mystery from the past still sitting heavily on some. I confess I'm now looking forward to Seb and Gemma's story. Please?
What a great story loved how it went back to 1949 to tell about the mystery that happened to alice while being in present time with wonderful characters …. Love the character of Winnifred …. Such a good book love kangaroo ridge ….
I read the first few chapters and I just couldn’t keep reading just wasn’t my cup of tea . I really loved the Mcalister Legacy . I couldn’t put it down from start to finish . But this book I couldn’t get into .
A quick flick .. Mostly harmless but often very improbable .. I was looking for a light and simple read .. and this delivered but it was more drawn out than I think it needed .. hence a quick flick.
