The Thief's Keeper

Rate this book
Two outcasts. One lost boy. A daring quest for freedom in war-torn England.

In the aftermath of a rebellion against William the Conqueror, northern England lies in ruins, its people scattered and starved.

Aelfric, a 14-year-old thrall, flees from his master and stumbles upon a cache of stolen laundry. The thief? Aliwyn, a girl around his age ostracized for being “cursed.” In her care is a lost toddler she has rescued from the clutch of greedy thrall traders.

Forced to cover each other’s secrets, Aelfric and Aliwyn form an unlikely friendship...and maybe something more. They embark on a perilous journey to reunite the child with his family and seek a cure for Aliwyn’s mysterious condition.

But time is running out. Aelfric’s master is on the hunt, and the shadows of death loom ever closer over Aliwyn. Will they find the courage and faith to press on, or will their quest end in capture and ruin?

4.7 stars (5/10 hearts). When I first stumbled upon this book, I instantly was hooked. Alternate medieval history of 1000s Britain, with the Danes, Saxons, Normans, and Celts all living together? I am SO down.

Honestly, it's been a while since I read this, so it won't be the best review. I plan to reread it ASAP. But for now, a quick rundown of what I loved:

- THE COVER! Oh my heart!
- The aforementioned setting. It's so well done you forget it's alternate history—the author adds in SO much real history!
- The one Norman knight and the English constable <3 also Reiya! Such a fascinating girl. Oh, and the baby :)
- The flute playing!!
- Aliwyn & Aelfric's friendship. It was precious.
- The honest, unvarnished portrayal of politics, religion, life, and the dynamics of trust, revenge, and racism.

I remember nothing else, but I do recall I was glued to the pages and I look forward to rereading it. :)

*Content information to come upon reread. I received a complimentary copy of this book for promotional purposes. I was not required to write a review, positive or otherwise. These are my honest thoughts & opinions.*

This is a terrific alt-historical adventure novel that should be totally accessible to young readers, and a delight to readers of all ages. Young Aelfric is a gifted piper and escaped thrall. Aliwyn is a sick girl with the toddler son of an English lord in her keeping who has taken to stealing to survive. These two orphans fall in together, and try to find their way to safety in 1000s England in the aftermath of the harrowing (a time of unrest).

Aelfric's past is pursing him all the time, while at the same time Aliwyn's mysterious illness only seems to get worse. Is it really a curse on her caused by loneliness, and is there anything Aelfric can do to stop it?

Full of wonderful historical detail, as well as some inventions, it was the characters that stood out most starkly to me in this narrative. Their motivations were always crystal clear and their psychology was well explored. I was following their twin journey every step of the way, ever wondering how they would get themselves out of the next mess they found themselves in.

The dangers and escapes of the novel are dramatic and thrilling, but they always rang as true to me. There is a narrative reserve and a realism about the action that grounded the story beautifully and never leaves the humanity of its characters behind.

For me, the journey of our protagonists' friendship lives at the heart of the story. Their deepening relationship, which they themselves hardly understand, grows into a trusting friendship through one hardship after another. The choices they make drive them apart, and at the same time somehow conspire to drive them closer together.

This is a story of goodness and the human spirit. It was wholesome, but not without its strife and grief. Candidly, it could not have come to me at a better time. It was a companion to me on many restless nights sitting up with a sick dog, my beloved friend. This story was a balm to my own grief and anxiety.

I wholeheartedly recommend it to everyone and anyone. There is so much here that is compelling to read: themes of friendship, prejudice, different faiths, anger, morality, and much more. Most of all this is a human story, and one I want to continue.

These are my initial thoughts of the opening. I read through the beginning of all 300 SPFBOX contest entries. This was a book I wanted to read more of.

An escaped thrall (a serf who is the property of a titled landowner in 1000’s England) flees recapture by his lord who he had thought to be killed in battle in this competent mg/ya historical fantasy.

I don’t understand non-adult book categories anymore and who their target audiences are or aren’t, but when I say this feels like it skews younger, that isn’t an indictment of its quality. This has been a fun and active opening.

It does a lot in a short time, starting right away with a serious problem for your MC (the threat of recapture), and immersing us in our setting with a quick chase scene through the port town full of traders and peasants and a herd of sheep.

We get to know our MC through his troubles, through his plucky courage, refusing to be recaptured, and through the wrongs (in his estimation) that he has refused to commit. He’s a resourceful musician and charming youth. He’s earnest, and I find that endearing.

In his latest nick-of-time escape that has sped his plans to leave the country, he’s forced to hide with another youth on the run - a girl with a dark secret.

This has the tone and light enthusiasm of a classic adventure novel full of danger rather than violence, brave youths, near escapes, daring risks, disguises, friendships, and more.

The dialogue is quick and revealing of character. The setting is engaging and immersive. The prose is energetic. The plot, as it emerges, feels full of possibilities. The character motivations couldn’t be clearer, and the story is on the move, which is its greatest strength! It’s a treat. I’m in.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a fun story that starts off mostly with a bang, I was sucked in from the start. Then, you get really invested in their stories, will they ever overcome these traumas/obstacles/illnesses? Will they be better than the person you initially meet, someone less selfish and willing to look outside themselves? I'm happy to report that the ending was as satisfying as I could've hoped as far as the people they become. Definitely moments throughout the story where I was frustrated with the characters, some where I cheered for them, just like every day life. I probably felt almost every emotion I can think of, and I believe a few tears may have even leaked from my eyes for their stories. However, all of this is part of why I read, a reminded to look outside myself, and that everyone has the potential to be better than they were, or even are at this very moment.

Aelfric is a runaway thrall who stumbles into the life of Aliwyn, a sick girl his age who is caring for a toddler trying to find a way to return him to his family. The two quickly intertwine emotionally and end up on a rapidly spiraling journey to bring young Godwin home, while Aelfric tries to find a remedy for Aliwyn’s sickness before it’s too late.

What a way to start off a series! This is a beautifully constructed world with a lot of ties to historical events and amazing characters. I love the fast pacing that keeps you on your toes but allows calmer moments of connection and reflection for the characters along the way. The indecision Aelfric faces is so realistic and well written throughout the story, and I love the sweet moments between him and Aliwyn and Godwin as well as the unexpected kindnesses from strangers along their path. Lovely read.

An immersive YA adventure intertwined with historical fiction and medieval worldbuilding. The tribulations that Alwyn and Aelfric have to endure are tragic and traumatic, but the bond they share is deep and unyielding.
This story dives into multiple themes including religious perceptions, vulnerability, slavery, violence, medicinal remedies, and the harsh living conditions and ruthlessness of the medieval era.
The found family bonds are beautifully crafted in this story, and there are heart wrenching moments throughout. This is non stop adventure, action, suspense and danger, and I loved every second.
Looking forward to reading more of this series!

Read my review on my blog: https://penspagesandpulses.wordpress....

I'm not exactly sure what people mean when they say that they're a mood reader, but when I was angry about a week ago and needed a book to read to help me be less mad at life, I went for finishing this book. And it worked!!! And I LOVED THIS BOOK SO MUCH!!!!!!

The Thief's Keeper is the prequel to Healer's Blade, and it explains how Aliwyn and Aelfric met, as well as introducing some of the characters that are present later in the series. I LOVED getting to see the first interactions between Aliwyn, Aelfric, and the other characters I loved from Healer's Blade. There are a few characters that aren't in Healer's Blade, but I'm HOPING will get their chance to shine later. Or even get their own spin-off series??? (Please, Kyrie????)

My favorite scenes in the book was when Aelfric was being a great dad/brother figure for Godwin. It was SO. INCREDIBLY. CUTE!!!!!!!! Seriously, guys and babies are the sweetest combination (and not enough guys know that).

I was so happy that I actually figured out what was wrong with Aliwyn before it explicitly spelled it out. When I figured it out, I did go to the Author's Note to check, but I waited as long as I possibly could. Also, isn't it incredible when authors include Author's Notes and extra goodies at the end of the book with extra goodies? Those are often my favorite parts of a book!!!

My least favorite part about this story was that now I'm more sad about what happens to some of the characters in Healer's Blade. I also doesn't love that the title includes the "thief;" doesn't Kyrie know that I cannot spell that word to save my life? And this book was way too short. I needed more!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Thief's Keeper reminded me a LOT of Jennifer A. Nielsen's The False Prince and the movie Quest for Camelot.

If you're interested in reading The Thief's Keeper, you can get it for FREE on Kyrie's website: https://kyrie-wang-author-d6k8k8.mail... I hope you love it as much as I did!!!!!!!!!!

I received a copy of this book from the author. My opinions are my own. A positive review was not required.

An interesting prequel to The Healer's Blade which provides some of Aliwyn's backstory and her relationship with Aelfric, which is hinted at in the sequel. Aelfric seems to have had an influence on her in the latter story but we never get to "see" him.
We also get to learn about how she first met Miriam, the healer who she later becomes an apprentice to.

TFK, like the book which follows it is a fascinating story about young people caught up in some of the worst events in history (well thier country's history anyway) who forge an unlilkely friendship crossing social and political boundaries.

Wang has created a strong alternative version of the Medieval world in this series, which is being populated by a cast of fascinating characters. I love how she peppers the narrative with certain details relating to her profession of medicine as well. I look forward to continuing this series in future. If you can pass it on to any teen in your life, I think they will love it as well.

From my 10 y.o son, Ethan.
In this book, the main characters are very nice. I like the part that one of them loves music and that they are very kind to each other. They are relatable and the stories of their families are very realistic.
The plot kept me on edge as there was always an obstacle in one way or another.  There were also many surprising dangers on their journey and the characters struggled to avoid them while facing enemies.
Most of the words in the book were easy to comprehend as the context gave me information to understand the words easily.
The medieval world felt real, as many parts of the cities felt real and they had many things you would expect in Northern England in the late eleventh century.
The book helped my faith in God in many ways. It taught me that even in hard times, God is always protecting us and delivering us from our enemies.
I loved this book, I couldn't put it down and it is a fun way to learn more about medieval life.

(Disclaimer: I got a free copy of the Thief's Keeper in exchange of an honest review.)

Oh my goodness, I cannot gush enough about this book. I love it so much. This is YA to the core and is such a sweet and heartwarming book. Aelfric and Aliwyn are forced together by circumstances but stay together as friends by the end of the book, and I cannot get over them.

This book is a prequel novel but can be read as a standalone and is suitable for young teens above the age of 11 or 12. It is historical fantasy fiction, and the author, being a doctor, has incorporated one of my favorite things in a fantasy book - throw in a medical mystery for my doctor brain to guess. While I don't specifically seek out medical thrillers or fiction, I love it when my usual fantasy genre features illnesses/disorders that I have to puzzle through.

Many thanks to the author to the ARC!

Absolutely am in love with this story! Everything takes me back to medieval times, the characters, the descriptions of the various places throughout the story and the general story telling all feels as though i have been taken on a journey back in time!

The main characters are so likeable and relateable that I felt as though I was right there with them!

This is definitely a must read if you are a fan on historical fantasy and want to be transported to a new world!

Also this is a prequel to the authors first book!

Although it's written for young readers, I found The Thief's Keeper an engaging, sweet story that's told very well. Aelfric in particular is a great character who undergoes real change through his bond with Aliwyn, and the mediaeval world they inhabit is painted vividly. The only real critical things I can say about it is that the characters' ruminations could get repetitive eventually, and some elements felt a tad forced, but it didn't take much away from my enjoyment of the story. Those after a fun adventure with lots of heart will find much to love here.

Loved this story! The world building is excellent, I felt transported back to the medieval times, the sights and sounds and smells. I really enjoyed how authentic all the characters were, main characters to walk on characters. They all enhanced the feeling of traveling back in time.
My favorite thing about this story is the new understanding of Aliwyn and Aelfric’s relationship. You truly feel their bond in such a deeper way. From reading Healer’s Blade you knew they were so close but now I just feel it more.
I’m also a big fan of the Vasfians and I was really excited when Reiya made her appearance. She is such a vibrant character.
Overall an amazing story, which made me appreciate Healer’s Blade even more. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good, solid story with ups & downs, vivid imagery and authentic characters. And if you haven’t read Healer’s Blade yet, I highly recommend it too!

This amazing historical fiction book brings history to life in an easy to imagine way that made me feel a rollercoaster of emotions right along with the characters. I loved getting a glimpse into the characters from Healer’s Blade’s past. Highly recommend this book! Kyrie Wang’s writing style is sure to pull any reader in, even those who may not typically read historical fiction.

I read an ARC of this book, and my opinion is 100% my own.

This series keeps getting recommended, and I’ve been meaning to read it for a while, so what better time than the summer reading challenge! This is the prequel to Healer’s Blade.

This was perfection! I’ve always loved medieval history, and this story did not disappoint. The story begins with our MMC, Aelfric, fleeing for his life from his master. He happens upon Aliwyn, a young girl who has been shunned by the community because they believe her to be cursed due to a strange illness. A lost toddler is accompanying Aliwyn, and Aliwyn is on a mission to return the child to his family. Aelfric and Aliwyn learn to trust each other and have faith in the other in order to return the young boy to his family, all the while dodging Aelfric’s master and those who would do them harm.

While this is fantasy, there is no use of magic. The story is set in an alternate medieval England. There are serious themes in this story (loss of family, people who would do harm to children, trust, discrimination), but it is a clean story and one full of friendship and hope. I would happily give it to a youngster (probably 12 and up) to read because Wang does such a lovely job of exploring the sadness experienced by the characters and providing them with a found family. I'm very excited to continue this series!

I was very intrigued by the setting and premise of this one but had a little bit of a harder time entering into the actual story. A lot of it was just a personal style mismatch, but somehow I had trouble keeping my mind in the time period it was supposed to be in. With all the actual history referenced, some things also felt anachronistic, and I couldn't tell if they actually were, or if I was just accidentally trying to pin it to the wrong period. I liked the details with Aliwyn's illness and guessed what it was rather early on, although I couldn't quite understand why, under the circumstances, she was the only one suffering from it. However, one aspect of the ending saddened me and kind of spoiled the rest of the book for me personally.

I loved this book. The adventures of Aliwyn, Aelfric, and Godwin had me on the edge of my seat. From the fleeing from the authorities to Aliwyn's illness, I could not wait to see what would happen next. The growth of both characters made me proud of them and yet cry and the pain they shared. Great story.

Aelfric is a runaway slave. The other slaves he had been with stold from the master and fled to Scotland. Ailewyn has lost everyone she loves, except the little boy she is caring for until she can reunite him with his parents. While fleeing capture he meets them. Although she is ill, she carries on and does what she can to help her new friend Aeleric hide until he can seek passage to Scotland. They learn what family really is and a simple sea shell helps them learn that beauty is on the inside. I do believe I will have to read the next one now.

I can't remember the last time a book made me ugly cry. It was beautifully written, and the story flowed effortlessly. I felt like I was watching Aliwyn and Aelfric's life play before my eyes, but there was nothing I could do to help ease their struggles, and it broke my heart.

All the characters were written well. They had depth and elicited a variety of emotions from me. Aliwyn's perseverance and strength were commendable. It would have been so easy for her to be selfish and give up, but she kept going despite everything. Aelfric's support and protectiveness towards her and Godwin warmed my heart.

This is a historical fantasy, and while my knowledge of history is terrible, I've heard that the worldbuilding is highly accurate. I also liked the descriptions of places, the different factions of people, their customs and cultures. The author clearly has done a lot of research.

I'm so relieved the book had a happy ending. I finished it in less than a day, and I cried through most of it. My poor heart wouldn't have been able to handle if things hadn't worked out. This is just the prequel to the main series, and I can't wait to read Book 1.

I recommend it to fantasy readers who enjoy historical settings, coming-of-age stories, themes of friendship, faith, forgiveness and healing. This book is a gem, and if you don't pick it up, you're definitely missing out.

Following the ebook while listening to this audiobook made me feel like I was really in the story! This young adult, alternative history, medieval adventure was beautifully written! I was moved so much, and cried in various degrees, spanning at least 55 pages. I highly recommend this amazing story of found family and strong relationships!
When Aelfric escapes from the life of a thrall, he stumbles upon Aliwyn, who helps him avert capture. She's desperately trying to get Godwin, a rambunctious toddler, reunited with his parents. As Aelfric notices that she is ill, and getting worse, he starts to take care of them. He wants to help her in her mission, and find a cure for her ailment.
Will they learn to fully trust each other and overcome their differences? Will they succeed in their plans and find happiness for themselves?

Aelfric - Was so nice seeing him so young and his past and the struggles he's gone through. I've never thought how hard his life was, and the way he met Ali was so sweet. I loved the way they just met and got stuck together by fate you could say.
Aliwyn - Her story is captivating, and I loved how good of a heart she had and how strong she was despite the struggles she's gone through.

⮞ 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝-𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 ⮜
Not a friendly world to live in. More than once I got frustrated by how indiferent the people were towards two kids, and how cruel they were. They were legit each for themselves and barely few people had a good heart - to say I was enraged for most of the book towards Ali and Aelfric because no one protected them is an understatement. I wanted to yell more than once they're only children!!!

⮞ 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐝/𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐝 ⮜
Even tho the world they live in isn't a very friendly one and made me feel enraged more times when reading it, I loved seeing Aelfric and Ali together. They got together in such a funny way and they got stuck with each other and I felt it was fate bringing them together over and over, and once they started caring for each other it was so, so sweet. I loved how Aelfric's heart just melted after a while when came to Ali and I loved the fact they were two strangers in the beginning and then they became so good friends and inseparable. I just adored their journey together and the detail at the end about Aelfric was such a wow factor.

⮞ 𝐒𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐞/TW ⮜
The story is clean aka no romance of any kind other than a very beautiful friendship taking place. However, the story does touches on hard subject like abuse, slavery and stuff that were happening in the medieval time. Nothing that happened in the story triggered me.

This dual point of view story goes between a young boy named Aelfric and a young girl named Aliwyn. Aelfric is a thrall who has endured the loss of his family and abuse at the hand of his owner. He is trying to escape to Scotland so that he can be free and live his life. Aliwyn is a thief who has by necessity stolen things to make money and survive. She is on a mission to reunite a toddler with his family by Easter. Through unexpected circumstances, Aelfric and Aliwyn are thrown together and they have to learn to trust each other so they can escape and not get caught.

I really enjoyed this read. I haven’t read much Medieval fiction, but this story was written in a way that had me interested in knowing more about the time period. I loved that Kyrie Wang included an author’s note and medical note at the end of the book to give more historical background about places, people and medical conditions she wrote about. It is evident that Kyrie is very knowledgeable about these topics and it gave such authenticity to the story.

Favourtie Quotes:
“You don’t want life to be fair.””Why?””If everything were fair, we wouldn’t have many of our blessings, either. We don’t deserve them.”

“The longer we live, the more sorrows we’ll face, but also the more blessings we’ll have.””How you experience life depends on which you focus on.”

If you love stories that have adventure, mystery, loyalty, friendship, and grace, make sure to add it to your TBR!

Historical fiction at its very best! I’ve read the author’s other book, so it was brilliant to return to the world and learn more about Aelfric and Aliwyn.

This is a well-researched, well-crafted, and well written book. I think any book that is propelled by characters has to do some strong work to make them interesting, and I found my heart in my mouth for Aelfric, Aliwyn, and Godwin so many times. These characters will always have a home in my heart.

The commentary in grief and loneliness in this book was especially poignant. It was cathartic to see questions I’ve asked God myself being explored in the context of a story.

I also found the author’s use of scurvy to be fascinating as little is known about how it was dealt with in those times. As always, I loved the author’s note at the end!

I literally stayed up to read this book and I can assure everyone that it was it’s worth every star in the world.

This was a great book to read, I adore the main characters, I absolutely love how Aelfric puts Aliwyn's needs before his own and decides to help her and risk his own life and freedom for her, and I even got a bit tears welling in my eyes when Aelfric finally understood that he didn't want to leave her at all. All in all it was a great book and worth taking the time to read. And oh my gosh, the cover of this book has to be one of the most beautiful covers I have ever seen. Stunning.

I recieved a copy of this ARC in return for my honest review. Thank you so much.

Author Kyrie Wang is really showing her chops here with this prequel. The first book in the series, Healer's Blade, already introduced strong characters and a gripping story. Now with this prequel, we get to really dive into the past to get a sense of main character Aliwyn and the world in which she evolves. Without revealing too much, let's just say that her story is one of deep trauma, but also of hope and faith. The calm moments between her and Aelfric are heartwarming and help to drive the story just as much as the action parts. No paragraph is wasted, with each passage of the book helping to flesh out these two characters and their relation to the world around them. I could go on and on praising the quality of the writing and the strength of these two characters, but the only way to truly understand is to read the book!

The target audience is YA, but as an adult I thoroughly enjoyed it. I highly recommend this book and already look forward to the sequels!

This very pastoral story made me want to read the rest of the series!
The characters are well-rounded and the story is fast-paced. World-building is very subtly done within the progress of the plot as the characters pursue their quests. The way the two characters come together and aid each other read very seamless and realistic. This has high fantasy vibes with long journeys and cosy personal quests. Looking forward to reading more in this world.

Hi everyone, thanks for checking out my book! You can get it for FREE when you sign up for my newsletter at KyrieWang.com.
Here's what you can expect in The Thief's Keeper (An Enemy's Keeper Prequel):
- Dual POV, 3rd person limited, between a male and female protagonist

- Tropes: Found family, stuck together, grumpy/sunshine, antagonism-to-friends...ish (Only friends? It's complicated).

- Violence and fighting: Minimal. Two characters are beaten but walk away from the scene.

- No swearing and no spice. There is budding romance, but the romance begins in earnest in the sequel to this book, Healer's Blade

- Potential trigger: Aelfric is a runaway thrall, which is the medieval term for a slave. His backstory, told as brief flashbacks, may cause discomfort for some people.

*Note: My 8 year old daughter really wanted to give me 5 stars after listening to the audiobook..so this is why I'm rating my own book 😆
