I’ve been a passionate teacher all my life and love to help young people see beyond their immediate world of home, school, and community. The fact that book #1 in the series “Discover Remote Places”, VANUATU; THE FOREIGN EDUCATION OF ABEL, has reached bestseller status on Amazon proves that young readers are fascinated by the different and colorful cultures that make up our world.
Pat and Rosemarie Keough of the Canadian Explorers Club have hailed the book COMING OF AGE IN SULAWESI: A Tale of Tolerance and Friendship as a spring board for future study of an unknown culture, and Dr. Rizal Malik, former CEO of WWF calls the story beautifully written, with a clear message to teens.
I’ve lived in Austria, South America, Japan, Great Britain and Switzerland and am now a resident of Hawaii. I have traveled to more than 100 countries, and am eager to share my cultural experiences and insights with young readers with the aim of building bridges of understanding between peoples of different cultures.
If you want an interesting and educational novel for your middle-school child, I would highly recommend Ms. Karin Jensen’s “Chasing Courage.” The narrator is a young Mongolian herder called Nergui who embarks on a perilous three day journey on horseback to find a doctor for his very sick father.
Ms. Jensen’s book is a fascinating window into the lives of the nomadic Mongolian herders who roam the steppe and live in homes that can be set up and dismantled quickly called “gers.” “Chasing Courage” teaches us so much about the unique cultural beliefs and customs of the Mongols. The author has obviously done her homework and offers us a rich and wonderful tapestry of humanity in this landlocked country of East Asia. In addition, the end has some great photographs taken by the author’s husband, Michael Jensen and there are also some nice recipes.
The book has made me want to immediately start planning a trip to Ulaanbaatar.
