Rate this book
What’s a brokenhearted college student to do when her ex of three years breaks up with her over text on Christmas Day? Seeking temporary solace in a bathroom hookup with a complete stranger on Christmas is probably not the best idea. However, that’s exactly what Ginger Thomas did in an attempt to escape the pain. Little did she know that the impulsive encounter would turn out to be more than just a fleeting distraction. As it turns out, Ginger is now faced with an unexpected Christmas gift - she’s pregnant.

Returning to campus brought its own challenges, especially when her casual hookup's sister became her assigned off-campus roommate turned best friend, adding an unexpected twist to an already complex secret. Preparing to reveal the truth to Holiday when she accompanies his sister home, Ginger discovers he had doubts about their son from the start.

This wasn't the Christmas present Holiday expected. Seeing her in his family's home stirred up suppressed feelings from their parting last Christmas. Though it was a one-time affair, it left a lasting impression. Now, with the revelation of a baby that resembled him, he questioned everything they once shared last Christmas.

If you're looking for a holiday, Hallmark cookie cutter romance or a rom-com that will leave you feeling warm and fuzzy all over, skip this. If, however, you're looking for a short story with some holiday drama, this is the novella for you.

Last Christmas started good and was full of potential. Sadly, it didn't live up to it. The cover the synopsis drew me in because I love a cutesy holiday romance you know the ones -woman meets man, sparks fly, they're not sure they can be together, there's kisses, then angst, and then everything works out because love always wins.

I sat with my thoughts after reading it trying to figure out what annoyed me about it so this review wouldn't be overly harsh. I'm mindful that this is someone's work. Creativity is nothing to be scoffed at.

First of all, this was not the Christmas story I was expecting. I don't know why it even has Christmas in the title. I assume it's because the main characters Ginger and Holiday first met around around Christmas. I think the author could have developed this part of the story more before zooming into the future - one year later.
We meet the main characters who hooked up the same night after meeting each other. That wasn't a problem but to skip so far into the future and have them meeting again and having them deal with the consequences of their actions should have been better developed. Readers should have been given a clue, I almost got whiplashed returning to the previous encounter trying to figure out if I'd miss something

I really didn't like Ginger. I did when I first met her and while I empathized with her for the way Holiday and his parents questioned her about the paternity of the baby, and the fact that she kept Jackson a secret, she was not blameless in anything that followed. How could she not have clued Holiday's sister Avery in? I was glad when Avery called her out and I was upset when she (Avery) didn't walk away from her but decided to be rational about. She used her and her flimsy excuse didn't mean a thing.
I will not delve into the relationship with her parents. That's a whole other subject.

That said, the most irritating aspect of this story was Holiday's words and actions. I cannot reconcile the way he spoke and acted, not with the glimpses the author gave us into his upbringing, his family, his job, and his friends. People are often influenced by those factors.
I can't hear him flying no plane and making announcements to passengers and talking to the crew saying "Yo shorties, we coming up on JFK and I'm about to drop this bird on the runway before pulling up to gate 5, you feel me."
The more I read, the more I came to believe the author, Queen T, couldn't decide what she wanted him to be and he morphed into another person as she was writing. He stuck out, big time. I thought he was disrespectful to his mother, too.
Was he a thug? A nice guy? Was he a nice guy who low key wanted to be a thug? I don't mean him being a ho part, I got that.
And exactly what did his parents do? I'm still trying to figure out? What's up with that bag of money his father passed the DNA technician to rush the test??

Honestly, I didn't mind the drama. I like drama filled, messy stories but this one wasn't well done.

It was ok

This was an ok story. It had potential. It could have been better is Ginger was more apologetic and took some accountability. How is she mad and overwhelmed at a situation she created? She knew Avery was her son’s father sister yet kept his identity from both the sister and the father! I’m so over these authors writing about women hiding kids from their fathers. It’s starting to become an all to common thing you read about. All these “women” lack communication and maturity. Holiday reacted the right way. Everyone was too forgiving of Gingers lies and secrets.

Not for me

I saw the cover and was really excited cause I love accidental pregnancy. However I didn’t enjoy the writing style, the narrative voice, or the pace of the story. It was repetitive had a lot of internal monologue filler and I didn’t like the MMC or his behavior at all.

I love a good secret baby trope but this one was not it. Day was annoying and after everything, she is just going to fall into bed with him again. I understand that the story was short but it was not put together in a way that could make the reader understand the couple.

Rating as a movie: NC-17 for sexual and vulgar language

Songs for the soundtrack: "Water" by Tyla, "Tonight (Best You Ever Had)" by John Legend, "Last Christmas" by ASTN, "This Christmas" by Chris Brown

Memorable Quotes: Ginger joined us, still half-asleep and rubbing the sleep from her eyes but now intrigued by the sight before her. Jackson's eyes lit up with excitement as he eyed the gifts, and a wide grin spread across his face. [Jackson is 3-months-old]

My rating: ⭐️⭐️💃🏿🍸🤱🏾🧑🏿‍✈️🎄

My thoughts: 🔖Page 21 of 109 Chapter 2 Ginger - Using ex instead of boyfriend drove me insane. It's boyfriend until after you're dumped, your "ex of 3 years" means you've been broken up for 3 years instead of together for 3 years. Nothing is interesting about either character. I'm switching books because I have to drive.

The book has a great cover, but the people on the cover do not match the character descriptions, Ginger has orange hair and Jackson is 3 months old. The language everyone uses doesn't match their environment, also everyone talks like a rap song, including the uppity parents, really?! Ginger got on my nerves, and the plot is so bad it could be a Jerry Springer movie.

Recommend to others: Not likely, if you like hood stories but want a change of scenery this may be for you.

Caution - This material includes explicit and graphic depictions of sexual activity (spicy sex) alongside the portrayal of rapidly developing romantic relationships (instant love). Intended for mature audiences only. Reader discretion is advised.

Last Christmas by Queen T is a spicy, drama-filled novella that’s as heartwarming as it is wild. It begins with Ginger, who, after being dumped via text by her boyfriend of three years on Christmas, finds herself in the arms of Holiday—a handsome, wealthy, and charming pilot. Their one-night stand is full of passion, with an agreement to leave it at that and never contact each other again. Fast forward to this Christmas, and Ginger is juggling a three-month-old baby and a life-changing secret.

This story is an insta-love tale about reconnecting with an old fling and navigating the complexities of merging families. Queen T explores themes like respectability politics and healing from family trauma, weaving them seamlessly into the narrative. The novella does an incredible job of building the tension and angst between Ginger and Holiday in the flashbacks, and the chemistry in those moments is palpable. However, I struggled to feel that same connection in their present-day scenes, which made it harder for me to fully buy into their rekindled love.

Despite this, I was thoroughly entertained from beginning to end. The drama, the stakes, and the emotional undertones kept me hooked. Last Christmas is perfect for readers who love a quick, spicy read with plenty of twists, tender moments, and a satisfying dose of family healing.

Great Potential but...

( Some Spoilers)
The cover is what first caught my attention. Kudos to the illustrator \ cover designer. The synopsis of the story made me purchase, I love a good secret baby, second chance at love story. Add Christmas into the mix and I'm hooked for sure! The story started good. Ginger, pissed and hurt after her longtime boyfriend dumps her, goes out on the town, meets a super attractive guy and their after hours activities lead to a baby. Since it was a one night stand and they agreed no strings, one night of passion to unwind Ginger has no idea, at first, who and how to get in touch with Day. Fate however intervenes and Avery, Gingers off campus roomate, ends up being Days little sister But Ginger never tells her...or Day. She decides to go home with Avery for the holidays and drop the bomb then.

Now at this point the story starts to go downhill for me. Gingers reaction to seeing Day as if she was unaware he'd be there. That was a huge part of her going home with Avery to finally tell him. Then the dialogue, Ginger being mad at folks being mad at a situation she did create by keeping the baby secret and then SURPRISE!! Day... His reaction could have been portrayed with more maturity. Mad yes, but... He got annoying. Then she offers a paternity and seconds later Day insists on one.

Ginger goes home for a small period - she calls this man Dad and refers to him as her father then tells him he's not her father but cries about him not being around (because he was working to support her and her mom, helped with college funds...), she sou fed really like a brat. You come home from college with a secret baby your parents ARE going to be shocked and maybe upset at first.

It had good potential but then, fell a little short. The repetitive parts and inconsistencies...

This book had some inconsistencies that made me a little crazy. But it was secret baby after a one night stand and she somehow became besties and roommates with her baby daddy sister but she didn’t know but she also did know… it was weird.

I decided to DNF this at the 75% mark. I’m not sure if this was the authors first book she ever wrote or what. It was really inconsistent and confusing sometimes. Like who knew about the baby and who didn’t because it felt like Avery knew in the beginning calling her the aunt then saying she was the godmother? Saying Ginger crossed her arms across her chest when she was just said to be holding the baby?? Having a conversation standing up but then saying they stood from the bed?? Like when did they sit down?? It was just all over the place.

The dialogue was very repetitive and I found myself skipping a lot of the conversations because characters were literally saying the same things over and over. And not in a trying to get the other to understand kind of way but in a poorly written kind of way.

Holiday was a terrible MMC and I didn’t like his character from jump. The way he spoke was just so— high schoolish. I know the characters were on the younger side of things but he just wasn’t enjoyable.

Ginger is 21 years old but when she went out and got drunk she would’ve been around 20. The baby is only around 3 months old when introduced but when she steps out of the uber she’s holding him to her chest not holding his car seat.

I also know it states that this was instant love trope but this was wild. The ending was extreme to say the least and I felt like it would’ve just been better if they talked about options on how to work things out more instead of jumping straight into that choice.

Idk, this just wasn’t what I was expecting even with the caution warning and I’m sad because the cover is so cute and I thought this was going to be a cute Christmas romance read. I’m usually not this critical when reading but when you start off noticing inconsistencies it’s hard to not notice more when it’s so many.

I didn’t enjoy it but read at your own risk.

I have a lot of issues with this story. It started off good but I lost interest, especially after the conflict was resolved. The spice wasn’t bad but I should have dnfed. It could have used either a lot of editing, make it shorter and cut out all the repetitive dialogue OR make it longer and develop the story more. I liked the character Holiday but I did not like how he was written. His inner dialogue seemed more refined but when he spoke it was like a wannabe hood stereotype. Also, there was no accountability on Ginger’s part. It all just felt unrealistic.

The storyline had potential but the execution killed it. The amount of filler for an already short story was ridiculous. And the repetition and conflicting statements made it feel like the author forgot what she had already written previously.

Was so cute and I could see its potential to be a 5 star. A lot of repetitive lines. The arguments went in circles with nearly the same lines repeating. Again I can def see the potential. Will def read from this author again

could've been better

I hape hopes for this book because this storyline was one of my favorite tropes but it was a fail for me. I cannot understand why she was so shocked to see him when you KNEW he would be there. She suggested a test just for him to turn right araiund and say he wanted a test because he couldn't believe that a one night stand that exchanged no info and didn't even live in the same state as you just informed you about a baby. When she spoke with her parents, it was literally 3 pages straight where they were just repeating the same thing "I wanted better for you" "I need you to support me"" you didn't see me as your daughter because you worked all the time" now that last one made no sense to me. It was made that her past family life was so traumatic just to find out they were just basically broke, which of course can be hard for anyone especially a child but it definitely wasn't what it was made to seem. Half of the book to me just seemed like a it was filled with repetitive info.

I wanted Ginger to eventually move different. I feel like she should’ve been more proactive due to her given ample amount of opportunities to communicate the reality of the situation she was really in. I would be thankful to have a friend like Avery because honestly…that’s too long to be lying about something like that.
But overall Ginger handled business and definitely had proved that she was going to be ok with or without support from both sides of family. She definitely gave independent woman.

Holiday started off being annoying to me. The respect that he continually had for Ginger had me wanting them to be together even through the arguing. When it came to him having to tell his family about Jackson I applauded him for how he handled that. It gave no room for any confusion when it came to Ginger being introduced. Either way Holiday was ready for whatever and he let that be known.

I overall liked Holiday and Ginger together. I had to keep in mind that this was an instant love romance because of how quickly things moved and plus there was a baby involved. I could definitely see this being longer and us getting to dive into their families.

The spice got delivered. Period. Even though one part I was like “hold on now. That’s too much for me” BUT it was realistic 🤣🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️

I had high expectations because the cover was so cute and the description was up my alley. The book (especially when Ginger was talking to her dad) was repetitive. I usually go through book so quick but with this book being 100 pages it took me three days to finish. It had potential to be great but it fell short. The writing style just wasn’t for me. Ginger was annoying cause why wouldn’t you speak up and tell Avery? Or call Day? But also it mentioned her family in a way that I thought they were terrible people strung on drugs or that she came from an abusive home. But nope her family turned out to be loving parents that did whatever they could to make ends meet and wanting what’s best for her. Didn’t care for Day either. He annoyed me. Avery was too calm cause I woulda been pissed if I were in her shoes. My favorite character was Jackson lol

Irresponsible Plotting

I thought I would love this book. The cover attracted me and the synopsis pulled me in. I was hooked until the FMC arrives at the MMC family home. Without giving too much away:
1. Both chracters agreed on a one night stand
2. These adults do not know one another but later the FMC realizes her childs father is her roommates brother and doesn't come clean right away.

This should be a sweet sexy story but bad plot decisions were made...
3. The FMC being slut shamed in this mans parent's home by his family when (see #1&2).

I'm so pissed this is a holiday book. The MMC becomes a trash dude and so are his parents. They are written confusingly to me; mad judgemental in the most inappropriate and toxic of ways. Insinuating she's a hoe but he's not. And the author didn't justify the need for these choices especially in a Christmas Romance. SMH

3.5⭐️

This story had potential to be 5 stars, but there was some inconsistencies with the story right around the time the DNA results came back. It really messed me up and I had to go back and read it again like wait wasn’t they just doing something else lol.. I think the characters were cute and had potential to be a cute couple if we had more time to explore their relationship. I do like the secret baby trope and enjoyed how this one didn’t take most of the book for him to find out he had a baby. Although this one wasn’t 5 stars I would read another book by this author.

2.5⭐️

This had the potential to be a nice novella but didn’t live up to expectations. The blurb and the cover sold this book to me but the plot under delivered.

For one, the POV was all over the place and inconsistent. I had issues with the dialogue and language. The way the MMC spoke was crass and belies his status as a pilot.

There were lots of repetitions which became irritating at some point. All of the characters except for the FMC’s parents were over the top and inconsistent, blowing hot and cold

If you are looking for a classic holiday read this is not your book.

Interesting, but a bit redundant and unrealistic.

The premise is good. However, it’s awkward that she’s a sophomore in college sleeping with a grown man. I know it’s a short story so it’s supposed to be brief and to the point, but there were a lot of times where I felt like I reread the same thing multiple times. It’s also unrealistic in a lot of ways and the character development especially with her family seems a bit low. Other than that it’s ok, a bit raunchy for me but I’m not huge on smut. Overall it’s kind of cute and an interesting tale.

Really Cute!

Imagine getting your heartbroken on Christmas via text message and receiving a lifetime Christmas present (a baby from a hookup). And this hookup is her best friends brother, man I was on pins and needles because I was hoping this wasn’t going to be a disaster but it wasn’t and in the end it all worked out for everyone. This was really cute. 🥰

Potential to be good...

This storyline had the potential to be really good. I think it would've been better as a novel instead of a novella so that we could delve into the characters, their evolution, and their storyline more. It felt very rushed to get everything wrapped up. The n word is always a turn-off, and "ma" everything Day opened his mouth is obnoxious.

a quick Christmas story of acceptance and new beginnings

Imagine having a one night stand, only for your sister to bring this one night to your parents house for Christmas celebration a year later . She didn’t come alone but with a young boy , who looks like a younger version of you. Will you ignore ginger and pretend you have never met her , or will you pull her to the side and ask her , if your one night stand produced the handsome baby boy she is currently with.

Good storyline!

This book started off very spicy with a night of passion that connects them forever. It has a good storyline, however it is very repetitive from paragraph to paragraph which throws everything off for me. Also, attitudes and emotions switch almost instantly throughout the story which makes it confusing to grasp how the characters truly feel.

Pick a Lane

Hmmm 🤔, pick a lane⁉️Unfortunately, “Last Christmas” was just a mediocre read. This novella’s primary characters (Ginger & Holiday) & plot development were both inconsistent, indecisive & hyper sexual with no basis 🤷🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️😬‼️Thereafter, “Last Christmas” was festive & Season’s Greetings adjacent 🤭‼️
