All children love myths and legends and the Irish have some of the best. The timeless tales of Tír na nÓg, Cuchulain and others are full of adventure, bravery and the fact that actions have consequences. Parents will love these retold versions as they are ideal for busy families and deliver a quality story time. The idea is that you enjoy reading together; associating reading with fun, attention, closeness and cuddles is an excellent thing to do.
These stories are designed for your child to join in when the rhymes are told at the start of the story.
“Cuchulain was the Ulster Hound,
When danger called, he would be found.
His battle fury was a fearsome sight,
And all his enemies would take flight.”
Found in Cuchulain the Hound of Ulster.
This is fun and you can laugh as you learn but it also helps with memory and prediction of the story which are both essential reading skills.
I have been telling these stories for over 30 years to pupils and my own children and they are guaranteed to be popular.
I call the stories ‘best loved’ to make sure they are suitable, as some myths and legends can be very frightening and they will not be here.
I use simple language to make them accessible to children so soon they will be able to read them alone.
