A woman with no memory of a terrible secret that puts both their lives in jeopardy.
Adele Clee writes historical romance mysteries set in the early nineteenth century. Her stories blend romance with intrigue, gothic atmosphere, and a touch of scandal, often unfolding in Regency and early Victorian London. Readers praise her scarred heroines, brooding heroes, and the way love and mystery intertwine across each series.
I know you see this in my reviews a lot, but Adele Clee is one of my favorite authors. I have read thousands and thousands of books and hundreds and hundreds of different authors. With that being said, I really don't have that many authors that I consider favorites. But she is one of those favorites. This is my 38th book by her and I've been reading her since 2016. I am really liking this series.
I really liked Delphine and Dorian. I loved this story. When I was reading it there was so much action going on, I felt like I was watching a movie, if that makes any sense. Such depth in the story as well as the characters. So good. Just loved it. I love when couples make each other better people.
Wow, Adele knows how to write a brilliant book. I loved this!
The characters of Delphine and Dorian were really good, they had so much depth. Dorian Flynn is a former Bow Street officer, now working independently or with leads from Daventry, who he has a lot in common with, and the Home Office. He’s a strong character and has worked in various capacities in his job. He’s dedicated and passionate about helping others.
Especially if they look like Delphine Chance, yes we’re finally getting her story, find out why and how she’s with the Chance Brothers. She’s a determined woman who loves her brothers. She has so much from her past she doesn’t remember, so much that’s uncovered throughout this story. You’re going to love this one, I guarantee it!
I received an Arc copy of this book and chose to post this review
- bodyguard hero - instalust - heroine in danger - murder mystery - steamy open door scenes - slow burn Available in ebook, paperback and KU: https://amzn.to/3ykwLSn
Short Excerpt:
She opened the back door, slipping into the yard before closing it behind her. There was no time to gather her wits. She swung around to face the gentleman and almost swooned.
“Mr F-Flynn?”
Good Lord! She’d been expecting a much older man, one who had to roll out of bed in the morning. One who spilled his dinner down his waistcoat because he functioned better when sotted.
The shock—and the sight of Mr Flynn’s athletic physique—left her somewhat lightheaded. Swaying slightly, she gripped the man’s forearm, which was another mistake. It was strong, like his powerful shoulders. Firm, like his sculpted jaw.
“Are you well, madam?” His tone was as smooth as fine wine. He clasped her upper arm to steady her balance, touching her where no man had ever touched her before. “Allow me to escort you inside.”
She stared at him, mesmerised by the amber flecks in his confident brown eyes. A little lost in the fullness of his lips and the fact his unruly brown hair was in contrast to his pristine black coat.
“Miss Heartwood?” He called her by the name she had invented to avoid any association with her brothers. “I must ask you again. Are you well?” His thumbs shifted, the unintentional caress stealing her breath.
No, she was not well.
Mr Flynn was a handsome man of thirty.
An earl’s ill-begotten son to boot.
If her brothers caught them together, they’d drag him to the altar, a pistol pressed to his back until he recited his vows verbatim.
“Let me help you inside.” Like a gentleman of good breeding, he was guiding her towards the door, not mauling her like a drunken oaf who conducted business from a tavern.
“No! Wait! I assure you, I am perfectly well. But time is of the essence. It’s imperative we discuss our business posthaste.”
His gaze moved to her bare shoulders, his grumbles incoherent. “Before we begin, allow me to convey my terms.” Aware they were still gripping each other like lovers about to part ways, he released her.
“Your terms?” She stiffened her spine and drew a calming breath, though she could still feel the imprint of his hand on her skin. “I was told the initial consultation was free.”

This book was another hit for me. It did take a couple of chapters to really get going but once it did, I couldn't put it down. The dynamic between Dorian and Delphine was unique in that they had immediate chemistry from the moment they appeared on page together, yet this was definitely a slow burn between them. When they finally did succumb to their connection, it was explosive, and it was impossible not to root for them as they worked together to solve the mystery of Delphine's past. I loved all the twists and turns of this story, as well as Dorian's willingness to stand up to Aaron and prove his worthiness of Delphine's hand. Even more lovely was seeing Dorian finally get to be part of a big family, something he'd been starved for during his lonely life before Delphine. Dorian was everything I love in a hero, and I very much appreciated that he was not a rake; the reformed rake trope has it's place, don't get me wrong, but I prefer the tortured, scarred, broody protector type hero any day. I adored seeing the HEA fall into place for these two as they found their family and I'm eager to read Theo's story next, though even more anxious for Aaron's as I suspect he may be the tortured hero of my dreams.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Tropes: mystery; MMC who is scarred physically/emotionally Steam level: 3-4 Part of a series; recommend that you read the previous books first.
4.25 stars. The pacing and mystery elements of this book are excellent, worthy of 5 stars, except for one final twist that's honestly too hard to believe. The romance aspect is good overall--the MC's have crackling chemistry and you believe in their emotional connection--but I would have preferred more of a slow-burn. The insta-lust goes OTT and the steam ultimately starts to overshadow the characters and plot. I liked the MMC, who is a former Runner and is willing to stand up up MFC's brothers, probably more than any of the male characters in this series so far. MFC is easy to empathize with but I found her to be a contradiction. I would have preferred her to be more consistently tough emotionally, but that's just my personal taste.
"I could find you in a crowd of a thousand women. There wouldn't be a queue. There'd be you. Only you."
4.25 stars
This was another fantastic mystery-romance by the lovely Adele Clee! I've been so curious about Delphine's past and how she came to be with the Chance brothers since book 1 of this series, and Adele absolutely delivered a brilliant mystery that I was completely enraptured by. Dorian and Dephine's romance unfolded in such a organic yet undeniable way, and I loved seeing Delphine finally spread her wings and live her life for herself. The Chance brothers also made memorable and scene-stealing appearances in this story, and I am so STOKED for both Theo and Aaron's books next!! Anticipation has been building for especially Aaron's book since the beginning, and I cannot wait to see Aaron meet his match and be brought to his knees🖤
Tropes: instalust, hidden identity, bodyguard hero, heroine-in-danger, amnesia trope, mysterious past, slow burn, political intrigue, band of brothers, found family, steamy🔥
I always enjoy this authors books… The mysteries are always interesting but this one was crazy confusing… The one thing I don’t like is when the other characters in the stories that will be future books are mentioned throughout the book-it was like throwing two more couples stories in the pages.. I will say her love stories are always deeply passionate… There’s always about two or three good sex scenes thrown in as well, which is always a plus! 💞
Oh. How I love this series! Christian and Aramis stories were great. But I knew Delphine was going to be something truly special and I was right. How could it not be. A found child with no memory of who she is raised by four brothers who were street kids, kicked out by their kin. Then become the most feared men in London and wealth too. She was raised in love and adored by all of them. Delphine knows she has a lot to be thankful for. With four of the most powerful, handsome men as her brothers and family she is the envy of many women. But for sixteen years she has lived in a gilded cage, overprotected and sheltered. Now at twenty-six or something around there (she has no idea how old she is) she wants, needs to find out who she really is. The nightmares are getting worse, and she is tired of living not knowing the past. One should listen to the old saying “Let sleeping dogs lay”. No one could guess the hornets' nest that was coming. Dorian Flynn is the son of an Earl and a maid. Born on the wrong side of the blanket. He was unwanted by his father and unloved by his mother. He had to grow strong to survive just being him. He learned to be a loner, he works alone and lives alone. He likes it that way till Lucas Daventry, the man who saved his life calls in a debt. He finds people it's what he is good at. This case will be special as it deals with the sister of the Chance Brothers!! Lucas Daventry is many things and one of them is a romantic and the best matchmaker for unlikely couples. Dorian is shocked when he first meets Delphine, she is beyond beautiful and young. Delphine expected to meet an older gentleman who would help find her parents or who she was. Not the very large, handsome gentleman standing before her. They are both instantly drawn to each other. The intensity of their attraction is off the charts leaving both a little dazed. This story is very fast paced and with the mystery, danger, secrets and a shooting too. There is a lot going on no one could have guessed. Many twists and turns will have you reading late in the night. Delphine and Dorian take several risks in the name of love. With Aaron and Theodore always close by to help, along with Lucas and of course Miss Darrow and Miss Lovelace (Miss Scrumptious) to help. Don’t miss this series, or this book. It is best to read them in order as characters reappear. If I could give these ten stars I would. I can’t remember when I loved a story so much and I read a ton of books every month. I received an ARC from the author and wish to thank her. This is my honest opinion and am freely giving it.
Secrets finally revealed....mysteries blown open! I've been tantalised by Delphine's missing past from the beginning and finally we get the answers....and it was well worth waiting for! The flow, pace and detail that enriches this romance led, mystery driven tale had me blown away...marvelling at how seemless this captivating and engaging journey unfolded. It brought two such lonely, insecurity riddled, yet, immensely strong, protective and intelligent characters, so magnetically together. With such heat, deliciously sharp witty banter and electric chemistry...I could feel their emotions to the depth of my butterfly swirling tummy as much as they made my heart beat faster. Former Bow Street runner, Dorian, has been covertly tasked with helping Delphine rid her increasing feelings of suffocation, by unlocking the secrets of her tragic past. With such absorbingly fun and intensely touching results. His erected barricade to keep people out is so deliciously pentrated on first meet, I was hooked and invested in their future happiness from the get go and enjoyed every over protective brotherly bump, danger riddled twist and passion blooming turn that unraveled. As their inner emptiness so delightfully filled with hope and dispersed the despair that had once resided there. In addition, LADY GAMBIT, shone with the characters that embellished it. I simply adore the Chance siblings, their protective instinct and the strong bond they share really resonated and radiated from their every encounter and added so much joy, passion, turmoil and love to the story. With the added bonus of hints being cast for Theo and Aaron's tales yet to come. As they promise to be just as thrilling and emotionally ensnaring. A romance steeped in mystery that really shone with the lead couple who worked to become the best versions of themselves as their heady passion for each other allowed them to grow and find their true selves. I can't wait for the next book in this fabulous series!
~I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own~
Lady Gambit is the third book in Adele Clee’s Rogues of Fortunes Den series. Although part of a series it can be read as a stand-alone. Book three follows Delphine Chance – the foundling sister of the notorious Chance brothers. Delphine has grown up protected and cosseted by her brothers but she has always had a niggling desire to discover her origins. When the feeling becomes too loud to quieten she decides to hire an investigator rather than hurt the feelings of the brothers who have taken such care of her. When she meets Dorian Flynn, the investigator recommended to her by Lucius Daventry, sparks fly. The attraction is instant and mutual. Both recognise a kindred spirit in each other. But as Delphine works towards unlocking her memories of her childhood, it is apparent that there is someone that doesn’t want her to remember. This is a fast paced mystery with plenty of steam. Delphine and Dorian are well matched and fall for each other pretty quickly. I really felt for Delphine as she struggled between wanting to find out who she is but also feeling guilty about betraying the love she felt for her adopted brothers. She blossomed from staying under her brothers’ stifling protection to a strong woman capable of making her own decisions. Dorian has his own demons being the illegitimate son of an uncaring Lord and a mother who abandoned him when he was young. He has spent his life all alone and it was nice to see him not only find love but also be accepted [eventually] as part of a family. This was an enjoyable read and I look forward to the next in series which follows Theo and the mysterious Miss Darrow. I received an advanced review copy, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
First impression: Beautiful though it may be, a gilded cage is still a prison that bars it's inhabitant from true freedom. For Miss Delphine Chance, the truth of her past could set her free to live the life she wants. However, as Mr. Dorian Flynn begins his investigation, will he find the elusive key that unlocks the door to her past, or will they both suffer heartbreak and disappointment?
I absolutely adored Lady Gambit by Adele Clee. It was so very well written, that I felt as though I was standing in a shadowed corner watching as each gripping scene played out. Ms. Clee's balanced style easily moved me from one vantage point to the next, while all the while keeping me guessing just when the villain would strike.
The well-woven plot in this romantic-mystery was both compelling and absorbing, while the danger was palatable. As my imagination moved within the labyrinth of twists and turns, Surprisingly, I incorrectly guessed the identity of the villain. That hasn't happened since many, many books ago.
Although the writing and the plot were both great, the characters yanked me in and held me captive. They dominated each page with their intense personalities and relatable emotions. By the end of Dorian and Delphine's story, their hard won HEA was sweet and smile-worthy.
Content 411: This book contains mild secular and religious swearing, passionate kissing and described sex scenes.
Disclosure: I received a complementary ARC of this book from the author via BookFunnel. I am voluntarily submitting my honest review.
In the thrilling third book in this series, Adele Clee captivates readers with a tale of mystery, romance, and self-discovery. Delphine Chance, the foundling sister of the notorious Chance brothers, has lived a life of luxury and protection. Yet, beneath the surface of her seemingly perfect existence lies a burning curiosity about her true origins.
Enter Dorian Flynn, a solitary figure whose expertise in finding the lost and forgotten makes him the perfect candidate to unravel the threads of Delphine’s past. As their paths intertwine, Delphine and Dorian are drawn to each other with an intensity that defies explanation. Their connection is immediate, their chemistry undeniable.
Adele Clee weaves a story that is as much about finding love as it is about finding oneself. Delphine’s journey from the sheltered sister to a woman of strength and determination mirrors Dorian’s own struggle with his identity as the illegitimate son of a lord. Together, they face a secret that threatens their very lives, driving the story to its heart-pounding conclusion. This book shows the author's talent for creating rich, multi-dimensional characters and mysteries that keep the reader guessing until the end. It’s a fantastic addition to the series that can stand alone on its own merits. I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader's Copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own.
Adele Clee earned 5 STARS for Book 3 in her well written & exciting Series: Rogues of Fortune's Den plus provides a great BLURB. The read is fast paced has well developed characters that some are recognized from past books in this series & just past Adele Clee series she has written & most fans will recognize; it doesn't matter if you don't because each book & it's characters speak for itself.
The Fortune's Den is owned by the Chance Family which is 4 brothers & 1 sister. Lady Gambit is about the sister who was taken in by the brothers years earlier as part of the family but she desperately wants to find out who her parents were & where she comes from.
This sets off a tale of intrigue, attempted murder & kidnapping, trips to the mental hospital where people have been locked up for more years than anyone remembers, & a trip to a mentalist to try & unlock a brain that can't remember of a girl when she was 10 years old & scared, alone, & on the street in the poorest roughest part of London. It grabs the reader & I couldn't put it down.
There is a underlying tale of falling in lust & love by 2 very lonely misunderstood intelligent people.
I loved this book that took me on a fast ride through my emotions.
ATTENTION: WARNING: 18YRs + SEXUAL ACTIVITY INSIDE
Delphine you can't help but feel for her because of her background and the fact she has no idea who her parents were or what happened to her before she happened upon the Chance brothers.
Dorian had a terrible childhood his mom blamed him for how his father treated her and his father only wants to use him now that he is an adult because he has no other heir.
These two are lonely souls looking for something that have been missing in their lives for years: love.
While working to solve the case of what happened to her parents and who tried to kidnap her, they not only find themselves in danger but they find themselves falling in love with each other.
Fate is what brought them together.
This story has so many twists and turns, so much mystery along with steam, love, laughter, and angst that you can't help but get pulled in from beginning to the end
I received this book as a free copy from the author in exchange for a voluntary review and this is purely based upon my own personal opinion and that of no one else.
This may be one of Adele's best among many. The lovely Delphine Chance is the young though now almost 26-year-old sister of the Chance Brothers having been found and adopted by the eldest Aaron. She has been sheltered and protected by her adoptive brothers who love and adore her. But now she gets to fly and spread her wings with the handsome yet sensible Dorian Flynn a former Bow Street Runner and only son, albeit illegitimate, of the Earl of Retford. Recommended by the master match maker, Lucius Daventry, to assist Delphine secretly to find her parents and family or their history. Since the age of ten when she was rescued by Aaron in a store alcove shivering from the cold and suffering from a head gash she remembers nothing. The gradual unraveling of her background with the help of Dorian whom she falls hopelessly in love with as does he with her in spite of the fierce warnings from her brothers, makes the story so compelling. A first-class Regency read with good steam. Received this arc and have voluntarily reviewed.
I was happy to be able to read an advance copy of Adele Clee’s Lady Gambit. To say Delphine Chance is protected by her adopted older brothers is an understatement. Even if there’s a very good reason for keeping her close to home, it doesn’t stop her from wondering who she really is & seeking information about her mysterious early life. She has to do some sneaking around to get help in her search. It’s fun to dig a little more into the Chance family dynamics. When Daventry encourages Dorian Flynn to help Delphine find answers, the sparks fly while the mystery unfolds. Delphine & Dorian are both really likable characters, & their journey is definitely a page turner. I never seem to guess how things will tie-up in these books. It’s funny how even the characters seem to know what Daventry is up to when he pairs partners in a case, but they’re still unable to stop the man from meddling. He’s just that good. I’m already looking forward to the next Chance brother falling hard.
This book is the next book in the Chance family (Rogues of Fortune’s Den), and I loved it just as much as I loved the previous books. Delphine Chance does not know who she really is. When she was younger and could not remember anything from her past, the Chance brothers took her in, and she became their sister. Delphine always wanted to know about her past, so she hired an investigator to find out about her past and who her parents were. This is where she meets Dorian Flynn. As soon as she meets him, she feels something. As Dorian starts the investigation, there are more mysteries to solve. The chemistry Dorian and Delphine feel is very strong, and he will do anything to help her and keep her protected. A wonderful story with mystery and love, what could be better. I received an ARC of this book, and I am leaving my honest opinion.
Excellent Story with Romance, Mystery, and Plot Twists to Keep You Turning the Pages
Delphine has no idea where she came from. The man who is about to help her discover the truth will change her life, in more ways than one. Uncovering Delphine's identity will open a can of worms that no one anticipates. Deadly danger awaits, and neither Dorian nor Delphine is safe. Delphine's brothers have protected her since she was a child. Now, with danger dogging her footsteps, she has Dorian and her brothers in her corner. Can they protect her from the deadly peril that’s to come? Will Dorian be able to find the culprit before it is too late?
This is my favorite book in this series thus far. It is a story that will keep you on the edge of your seat. I loved it and would recommend it to those who enjoy historical romance with mystery, suspense, and plot twists.
I was immediately put off by Delphine bursting into tears and nearly walking out both times she meets with Dorian initially. Over dramatic and made me find her annoying. I love dark plot lines, rags to riches and anything with a bow street runner. However I had to DNF because I just couldn’t connect with the unbelievable actions of the main characters. Delphines brothers are over bearing and controlling and we get told this over and over, next thing we know she’s forcing her way into questioning this old criminal woman who owned her as a child. But her brothers wouldn’t even stop checking up on her while at the modiste? The fact she did that at all was annoying as there was no real benefit to her going other than being a liability to be protected.
Wanted to like this, just couldn’t connect. Good plot line but inconsistent characters and wasn’t feeling the chemistry.
The Best So Far! Just what does one do when one has a bunch of overprotective men who have taken you into their family as one of their own. This story hots up right at the beginning when Delphine decides she would like to get back her past - to find out just who she really is - so she hires someone to help her and this is Dorian Flynn, an investigator recommended by our friend, Mr Daventry. Delphine and Dorian are so well matched - in every respect! Can you imagine how the 'Brothers' react when they discover what is really going on? It's just too wonderful! The more I read in this series, the more I want to read. Honestly, I thought the first two books were really good, this one is simply fantastic! I read an ARC (Advance Reader Copy) and my voluntary review is recorded above.
This author has it all, romance, mystery great characters and love. I am never disappointed with this author and look forward to reading the next book in series. Dolphins knows that she is well loved by her brothers but has always wanted to know where she came from since she has no memory of her youth prior to the age of ten. Thankfully she had been found and loved by the Chance brothers. Though the brothers are over protective and she decides to hire a detective, Dorian Flynn attracted from the first meeting. Things escalate from their second meeting and it was difficult not to stay up all night reading. I would suggest reading the first book in the series or even her previous seris , they are all so very good. Enjoy!
This is the third instalment of Rogues of Fortunes Den by the very talented Adele Clee. Delphine Chance has been living a life of luxury with her very overprotective brothers. She shouldn’t be feeling like a part of her is missing but that’s exactly how she feels. The Chance brothers are a force to be reckoned with and their wrath will be felt by all if anyone dares to touch their sister.
Delphine has been trying to figure out the missing piece of her past and the man to help her solve it is Dorian Flynnn. Dorian is a lone wolf always has been, as a bastard son of an Earl he never needed anyone. He needs no one especially the match his father has been trying to push on him. His life takes a turn when Delphine hires him to solve the mystery of the missing piece of a life she can’t remember.
There’s lots of intrigue, an elusive villain lots of romantic sizzle and tension. And a very satisfying ending. I loved every minute of this incredible fast paced book. I can’t wait for the remaining two Chance brothers Aaron and Theo.
received a complimentary copy from the author. This is my honest unbiased opinion.
A new chapter to the Chance brothers saga! This time the main character is Delphine, the girl the Chance brothers saved from the streets and then adopted as their own sister. All brothers are very protective of her, but they are also stifling her independence and I loved that she decided to take matters in her own hands, start looking for her real parents and trying to understand her past. Like in the previous books, the main characters here are very honest to each other from the start and this is always a bonus for me. Both characters have a painful past, but they fight to resolve their problems and be together. I really loved the mystery part that kept me intrigued until the end.
I keep reading this series, drawn by the mysteries and the stories of the characters. Here the mystery was better handled than in the previous novels, where there are so many names involved in the plot that I got lost. Here it's easier to follow. The steamy scenes were not quite good. Maybe because the worst aspect of the novel to me were the dialogues between the main characters. I also felt this in the previous novel. Who speaks like that? Nobody. Ever. Not in historical romances and not in modern romances. The dialogues draw attention to themselves, and in my case, distracted me from the plot.
This book is part of a series, but could be read as a standalone. The heroine was an “adopted” sister to brothers who now run the Fortune’s Den. While she has been protected, she still longs to know her origins so she hires an investigator, the hero. There is an instant attraction, but the hero has been a loner all his life, as an illegitimate son of a lord. There are many twists and turns as they try to solve the heroine’s mystery while someone tries to prevent them. I enjoyed how the characters developed. It was story with mystery and romance.
Delphine's story is full of intrigue and it kept me hooked to the end as her background is a complete mystery. Obtaining information means questioning a mad woman in Bethlam and other unsavoury characters in Seven Dials. Her investigator, Mr Flynn is determined to keep her safe after an attempt on her life something her very overprotective brothers are not happy about. Her story turns out to be sad full of twists with a happy ending. As always there are a few fleeting scenes where Miss Darrow makes appearances. I always enjoy her interactions with Theo. I can't wait to read her story next.
What an intriguing story. It’s sad that the victim in this story is also the main character seeking the truth of her birth, parents and the wayward way her life was lived as a pawn in someone else’s diabolical plot to assassinate the royal family at a celebration. It’s good that the plotters were found out but sad that the child was the pawn and her memories stumped by the unscrupulous men trying to keep her in her unsolicited role. The loss of her parents in a dastardly way and the orphaned child to fend for herself.
This book had me hooked from the start, I had a job to put it down! Delphine Chance longs to know who she is, having no recollection of her early life. Dorian Flynn is an excellent investigator, who she had engaged to discover what he can about her background. They have an instant attraction but try to ignore it. Delphne has some very protective brothers but she feels stifled. Dorian has an interesting background, too. This story had many twists and turns and secrets to be revealed as well as a growing romance. Romance and mystery, my favourite combination! A few characters from previous books pop up and a few hints are given about the characters featured in the next book. I look forward to reading it.
