At first, I liked it. However, the more I read, the more redundant the plot became. It started to involve the perspective of more and more characters which I wasn't a fan of. I felt these characters should have stories of their own as none of them really appealed to me.
I was not impressed with the way the betrayal was addressed between Love and Ellis. Ellis cheated on Love (of course he was tricked, etc, etc), years pass, and secret babies are involved, and then Ellis and Love cross paths again (as this plotline typically goes). Ultimately, I do not think Ellis did anything to repent for his actions. He mostly explained how he was regretful of what he did. He never really redeemed himself, but rather, he just spent more and more time with Love and kept telling her he loved her and so on, until she succumbed to old feelings. And then I suppose the reader is expected to sympathize with the whole situation once it becomes apparent that trickery was involved. This just doesn't cut it for me.
I was particularly disturbed by the relationship between Jace and Lilac. After she miscarries their baby, his way of coping with this loss is to abandon his wife, get drunk, and hook up with another woman, and naturally, the other woman becomes pregnant. So Lilac loses her baby, which in and of itself is painful, and then he goes and gets someone else pregnant. How does Lilac react? Lilac is briefly upset, but then she accepts that Jace was hurting and forgives him. What does she do after that? She goes to the other woman (who wants to get an abortion) and manipulates her into changing her mind about terminating the pregnancy. Then the other woman immediately agrees to continue with the pregnancy and give the baby to Lilac and Jace once it's born, all the while explaining she is only a host for the life inside her and wants absolutely nothing to do with the baby after she gives birth. Well, how very convenient for everyone (especially Jace who apparently gets to have it all).
The bottom line here is that no one was held accountable for their actions. As far as cheating goes, everyone was given an out. What Ellis did to Love was okay because he was tricked. What Jace did to Lilac was okay because he was upset/drunk. I find it hard to respect and relate to anyone who can forgive cheating this easily.
The story is interesting. The grammar and writing are fine. The plot is developed. I just don't like the way things turned out.
