A Broken Cowboy
Her friends thought Mimi had completely lost her mind. Quitting her job and buying a farm after spending only one week at a nearby dude ranch was something the responsible IRS agent would never do in a million years. But what they didn’t understand was that Mimi needed to breathe and for the first time in her life she knew how to make that happen. What Mimi hadn’t counted on was Gabriel, the handsome, though very odd caretaker of her new farm.
Gabriel was a bruised and broken man…haunted by the things he’d seen and the awful things he’d done. He didn’t believe anyone could love him the way he was now. When Mimi arrived he began to believe there might be a chance for redemption and maybe even love again.
Excerpt:
As Mimi lined up the site on the gun and took aim at the target, a large, weathered hand reached out and wound around hers, helping her hold the barrel steady in its warm grip. A second hand covered hers as her finger shook nervously above the trigger. Hot breath slid across her cheek as Gabriel’s face hovered beside hers, steadying her as she aimed.
Mimi fought the urge to melt into his warm arms, painfully aware that this was the closest she’d been to a man—any man, let alone one as built and good-looking as Gabriel—in a long time. Failed love was the first thing on the list of what had been wrong with her life back home, so much so that she knew coming out here and living like a hermit would at least mean she couldn’t get her heart broken again.
“Don’t close your eyes,” Gabriel said softly in the sexiest, huskiest whisper Mimi had ever heard. She couldn’t see them from this angle, but she could imagine his green eyes staring straight ahead, willing the gun where he wanted it to go. “Look at the target, line up the site. Let out your breath, and squeeze the trigger.”
Mimi followed his suggestions as well as she could, finding it hard to concentrate on anything other than the feeling of him standing so close to her. She fired, and was amazed to see that the shot at least hit the target, if not exactly in the middle. She turned to thank him, but looked and Gabriel was nowhere to be found.

5.0⭐️ This is a real gem, a very captivating story. The storyline was rather an unusual one from my reading experiences, and I liked it--a lot! The story had substance, and the characters are so well developed, that I really forgot that this is a short story. Although this story is about a Black woman and a White man, race is not an issue. The main characters are two incredible people who find each other and help to heal one another.
Mimi is a strong Black heroine, who fights her way through adversity. She is sensitive, caring and highly intelligent. She values the things in life that are not material, and she strives to make her dream of making her ranch a success despite the many setbacks she experiences.
Gabriel is a fantastic hero in this story. He is the caretaker of the property, and he's a virtual recluse who never comes indoors whether it is winter, summer, fall or spring despite the weather conditions. No one really knows why Gabriel is the way he is. We find out why as the story progresses. Mimi handles Gabriel’s "emotional disability" with such understanding and some powerful insights.
Nearing the end of the story, there were unexpected events that really added further depth to the story. There are some humorous moments as well. While I doubt many Black women would make a hasty decision to leave our home and possessions to buy a ranch sight unseen, I think everyone can relate to wanting to leave the big urban cities behind to find and experience the freedom, the beauty, the less hectic and smog-free environments.
Consequently, this was a most gratifying, substantive short story that almost feels like a regular, full-length novel. This little gem is well worth your time!

This was a good uncomplicated straightforward romance about two damaged souls who find solace with each other against the backdrop of lovely ranch and acres of beautiful land. I loved the idea of escaping from the stress of life and city living and just experiencing fresh air, wide empty spaces full of nature and beautiful horses. And if you throw in one hot cowboy then you have yourself raw beauty and therapy all rolled into one irresistibly therapeutic package!
And what city girl or guy would say no to waking up to such a beautiful scene?
Both h/h were complete opposites outwardly at least.
Mimi is an IRS agent looking to get away from city life and heal from emotional scars
Gabriel is ex soldier turned mountain man/cowboy
He is the strong and silent type who also loves to live in the wild and sleep in the open air due to PTSD as a result of his experiences in Afghanistan.
He needs the love and healing of a loving woman with an understanding kind soul.
They couldn't be more different, at least on the outside but They had a lot more in common than they both realised. Mimi found that she was able to understand and get through to this intriguing man and bring him out of his shell.
Mimi and Gabriel were well matched but I couldn't help feeling that they fell into an easy relationship way too fast and that things went from zero to one hundred in the blink of an eye. Everything between them was just a little too easy and comfortable for two strangers who just met and had a lot of emotional issues to deal with.
Apart from these few issues, I liked reading Mimi and Gabriel's story. I love easy breezy romance stories every now and then and this one was a lovely change of pace for me.

I thought the book was ok and not really realistic, but I did like all of the characters. I can understand wanting to get away from a dead end job and moving out a city for peace and quiet. What was not realistic is leaving all of your possessions within your home to move into a broke down ranch without furniture, bed, linens, pots, everything you already own that would just be moved to the ranch. Not realistic either that a caretaker on your property who you think is weird and quirky you would have unprotected sex after two weeks of meeting him. Some things like, Gabriel mentioning what do people talk about on a dinner date, made it appear that he was never a part of society, but a recluse who always lived in the wild. You discover later that he was a soldier who did three tours of duty, so he has been around others. The PTSD aspects were told where you could understand his aversion, fear and distrust of society. I just wanted a bit more connection before the "I love you's".

I liked the premise of this story. BUT It was just too short, simple, convenient and cute. I think it should have been longer with more depth. They were in the middle of nowhere with not thing to do and there was not one real meaningful conversation to get to know each other and build the connection. There was sex and random visits. IDK.Also, a black IRS agent city girl impulsively buying 500 acres of land is not probable, feasible, or logical, but hey sometimes you have to suspend belief. It didn't bother me that much because I just ignored it.
I have nothing overly negative or positive to say. There were no twists, depth or intricacies to the story, so keep that in mind. I read it for free on unlimited so I can't complain to much.

I thoroughly enjoyed Gabriel and Mimi's story. Cute, loving, tender love story about two broken people who discover love. There is a part in the story that really moved me when Mimi thinks she has lost Gabriel, after she has lost so much in her life she is ready to give up and he comes to her rescue and gives her the strength she needed to save herself. Now if was a crying girl, I would have been howling at that point its was so moving and tender to me. Lord that part just got to me! I loved this story. Great read!

Really Good Story
When I started this story I was initially about to put it and moan and groan about the bad choice.The more I read I began to poke holes in the logic and believabilnity.Then I did what the writer asked me to see and that was a wonderful story.This is such a very good,sexy funny story,that reaches you on many levels and you want to be on those levels.Through out this story you get to see how people struggle and overcome.I would have liked a longer story but this is just right.

I loved this awesome story! For an 84 page novella, it turned out to be a better story than some of these 200+ disasters I've read lately! Mimi, a bored and unfulfilled IRS agent goes on vacation and decides to purchase a ranch and change her life completely. Her friends think she has completely lost her mind. Gabriel, the mysterious caretaker, is an ex-soldier, so damaged, he can't stay inside enclosed buildings or socialize with other humans. How they heal each other is simply incredible!

4 stars. I truly enjoyed this book, and will definitely read it again. What a beautiful love story. How Mimi decided to have her own farm and helped Gabriel. Oh, I can get enough. I want a Cowboy dammit. I think it is time for a "Road Trip". Cheers to the Author, girl, keep them coming mama.

I loved this book. It had heart and compassion. I loved Gabriel's courage to work through his PTSD. I appreciated Mimi being so patient and loving toward him. Beautiful story.

Whoa. Gotta say that I thoroughly enjoyed reading this. It's an oldie (in terms of the fast-moving ebook world) but a goodie. Loved the chemistry between the hero and heroine. I'm on my way to find more Cowboy BWWM romance & drama.

Liked Gabriel and Mimi's story a lot. I feel the same as Mimi at times and just want to run away from the city life to the open range. My luck there won't be a Gabriel in waiting. Lol.
