Alright, homies, I think it’s safe to say that the PNR edition of this anthology blew its contemporary counterpart out of the water. Like, it was so much better it was shocking.
If only the editing would’ve been better…
Anyway, here are my thought notes from the end of every story. As always, I HIGHLY recommend you purchase both versions and support amazing charities. Do with my opinions what you will. Super love all of you, even when you hate me.🙃😌
You Can’t Spell Necromancer Without Romance: A little chaotic, a bit messy, but sweet and funny and adorable.
Hot Date: Uhh… okay? That was EXTREMELY short. Like, suuuuper short. And confusing? I need more detail than that. It has potential, but it’s pretty anticlimactic as-is. Expanded it would be amazing, I’m sure, but as it stands, she cute but she lacks.
Sweet Treats: AHHH. TOO CUTE. GONNA DIIIIE😩🥺
Looking 4 Furever: I hate that it was short because I loved it. FUCKING ADORABLE. UGH.
Locked in Love: Why??? Why would you give us this amazing pair of MCs and it just be in a short story?? W H Y. Why? The disrespect.
Love Me Love My Dogs: This is one of those that was cute, but it was heavy on the “this belongs to an established, already known world” that I don’t actually know shit about, so therefore need more details than I’ve been given to fully enjoy it. Maybe if it had been a whole book, and maybe if I already knew the world and how it worked. Idk.
Not So Cupid: Again, cute and precious, but like…did I miss something? What world is this set in? I have no idea, so I’m pretty lost/confused. Kinda harshed the vibe.
Starry Night: DNF, first few pages. The writing style isn’t for me. It felt weird and oddly preachy, and while I’m all about detail, not like this. Sorry?
The Hidden God of Open Doors: Well that was a bit dark. Like, my heart broke for Rune the whole time. Poor baby😭🥺 It was too short, but only bc I wanted it to be longer. I enjoyed it immensely.
Love under the Sea: No ♥️ That was…that was just bad.
Bonus thought I marked down at one point: Random side note: The authors in the PNR collab seemed to have read the room and understood the assignment a LOT better than the contemporary counterpart authors did. I know I’m barely in it, but all of them have used the prompt and then added their own style. I fucking LOVE IT.
Welp, that’s that. Y’all be good to yourselves, now, ya hear? I’m gonna go read something that isn’t an anthology for the first time in a minute. ✨👁️💋👁️✨
~And, because you know someone actually DID say something on the last one…~
Original Amazon Review:
Thank the gods.
These stories understood the assignment MUCH better than the contemporary counterpart. The prompt was used and the H2H/Cupid aspect was consistent for the most part throughout each story.
The editing was still a nightmare, though. Some stories more than others, but it was just as not great as the other edition.
Again, for a full review, I’m on Goodreads.
3.75/5. .25 more for the fact that it felt more like an anthology than the contemporary version. I still wish some of these stories had been longer, as they were excellent and deserved more content.
