TAMARA MCKINLEY was born in Launceston, Tasmania, and was forced to come to England with her grandmother to finish her education at an all girls’ boarding school in Sussex. Her childhood experiences and the enduring memories of her amazing grandmother and two extraordinary great-aunts, form the back-bone of her novels which are coloured with the red, green and gold of her beloved Australia.

Having raised her three children in the Eastbourne area she started to write psychological thrillers before returning to her roots in the form of Australian family sagas set against the backdrop of the outback pioneers. After Becky Jackson found out her husband was lost at war, Becky must find a way to go on with her life. To do this, she decides it's time for her and her son, Danny to leave the city and return to her family's property in Morgan's Reach where her family have been managing the bush hospital for many generations.

Becky tries to move ahead with her life, but she finds it a struggle as Danny can't accept his father isn't coming back. Then there is the day to day work load and with the fire season just round the corner, it will mean everyone will be on high alert. With no rainfall in such a long time one small fire could destroy the whole town.

Having read numerous rural novels I never tire from reading about the outback and about what family's go through on an everyday basis. Firestorm was a very enjoyable read. Recommended.

This is the third book I have read by this author. I enjoyed it. The story starts with an unnamed soldier finding his way home after World War 2. It then moves to introduce us to the Outback area around Morgan’s Reach and the bush hospital that exists there and has for three generations. It introduces characters and the families that have lived in the area. There are quite a lot of characters to keep track of and the story jumps around a bit from one character to another, so it takes a while to settle in to that style. But the value is it gives a multi layered picture of the area and lifestyle. These are people shown with all their flaws but, with a few notable exceptions, characters the reader will enjoy getting to know.
Becky Johnson and her family who run the bush hospital are people anyone would be pleased to have in their corner, even though Becky has her problems with her young son Danny. Danny refuses to believe that his father died in the war and insists he is coming back. This creates problems and tensions for Becky in being able to move on and leave the past behind to find love again.
The Outback is as much a character in this novel as the people that inhabit it. We see the harshness of the land and climate and the effects it has on the community, sometimes for good but not always. I liked the way relationships were portrayed and the strength and place given to some of the indigenous characters.
I enjoyed this novel, felt the tension of the various stories and the threat carried by the land’s vagaries. It gives a good example of community working together and the dire effects of droughts. The fire scenes are particularly well done. I enjoyed spending time with these characters and shed a tear or two on the way through. I'd recommend this book not just to Australian readers, but those from overseas who are interested in Australia and its people.

Het boek sleept je opnieuw mee naar de outback in Australië, een decor dat in al haar boeken terugkomt.
Ook hier weer een vlotte schrijfstijl en personages die aanspreken.

Beautiful, poignant and touching! I had forgotten how much I love reading this genre moving me and the tears flowed!

Set after WWII all the men who were returning were home, and for those whose families without their loved ones, life had to go on.

Such a powerful drama about the lives of families struggling to live in the harsh conditions of Australia. The tight knit families lives are tested when storms and fires rage threateningly out of control, wonderful reading!

A superb plot, a boy waiting for his father who will never return, with a mother who is unable to move on because of it. A son returning back to his home town with a wife who is blind with grief seeking solace in a bottle. Another who seeks refuge from a brutal husband finding peace in a relationship that is concealed from everyone. Then there is the dead soldier who never returned from the war who goes home secretly to die following his beloved aboriginal spirits. Excellent stuff!

What I liked best

I love the weave of families with their nuances and local histories.

There was real excitement with the storm, and the fire. A boy being lost in the bush looking for the stranger seen wearing soldiers clothes, hoping he is the father he cannot believe is dead, that somehow a mistake has been made and he will return home.

Gwyneth, is the great grandmother; grandmother and mother of a prominent family in the town who knows everything thats going on. Sitting on a veranda watching the townsfolk she orchestrates her guidance appropriate moments. A great wise and feisty character.

When the fire is fuelled by the dry storm, tragedy is all around them, even though this is something that is already known to them in conditions they have battled before, it is no less shocking when death claims lives. My excitement mounted with the fire racing towards the towns 10 year old Danny goes missing and with his mother needed at the infirmary with the casualties she fears the worst.

Just look at this wonderful line - got me right…here (places hand against heart):

And, as she stood there, the silence enfolded her as a long-held dreams shattered like fine glass.

What is different about this book?
This could have been just a run of the mill story about Australians trying to recover after the second world war in the outback, keeping their people and towns alive and thriving in harsh conditions in Queensland. But no, the real backbone to this story is of a man travelling on foot in solitude and secret towards Morgan’s Reach. All we know about him is that he is dying from cancer and that he wants to get to the town before the end, but does not want to be seen. He certainly is a mystery. His story is heart wrenching and I got a sense of a ‘kind of driven peace’ that surrounds this man in his final journey. His talks with a small boy and the peace he gains from it made me cry.

If you want a book with love, sorrow, courage, tragedy, and overcoming adversity, along with something beautifully spiritual then this is the book for you.

This is the first of Tamara McKinley's books I have read and will be certainly looking out for her other books.

Tamara McKinley is an automatic read for me without even reading the blurb on the back. It was nice this time to see Tamara go back to a time in the Australian Outback that she can really make you feel that you are there. She has a real nearly poetic way of describing the sights and smells of another time and place. This story took a good half of the book for me to really get into purely I think because there a lot of characters, but once you work out who everyone is, the story really starts to roll then. This is a great Australian Story set just after WWII when Australia was trying to recover from the massive loss of life, friends and family in outback Queensland and a small rural town. A good read……

The story builds like the storms assaulting outback Queensland. The bushfire is a great tool for the characters to deal with their problems and each other. We see what it means to live in a small community and the resilience of the people of the outback. A good Australian story.

J'ai été extrêmement touché par cette lecture riche en émotions.

1946. Australie. Tout commence par un premier personnage énigmatique. On ne connaît pas son identité. On sait seulement que c'est un ancien soldat qui revient de la guerre traumatisé et malade. Le cancer le ronge. Ses jours sont comptés. Son retour à Morgan's reach sonne la dernier halte du brave qui se sait condamné.
Il s'agit d'un fil conducteur très fort qui m'a ému et hameçonné tout le long de ma lecture. Qui est-il ? Il ne veut pas qu'on le reconnaisse et d'un certaine manière, il devient un spectateur. Alors, quel est le sens de sa présence ?

Car même si son rôle est important, il y a aussi toute une gallérie de personnages formant une communauté qui l'est tout autant.

Gwyneth, Jane et Rebecca forment trois générations de femmes d'une même famille qui donne un aspect épique au récit. Gwyneth est la matriarche. Veuve d'un médecin, elle veille sur ses ouailles d'une main de fer. Elle est les racines solide d'un arbre. Elle aide le mari de Jane, Hugh qui a repris la succession et qui croule sous le travail. Quand à Rebecca, veuve elle aussi, elle revient pour retrouver un sens à sa vie et trouver de l'aide pour aider son fils à accepter son deuil. En effet celui-ci semble incapable d'accepter le décès de son père et le fait qu'il ne reviendra pas.
Le chagrin a arrêté le temps pour le petit garçon et Rebecca se refuse à ne pas suivre le rythme de son fils malgré ce qu'elle ressent pour Ben, le beau pompier.

On a là le destin de ces personnages mais il y a aussi d'autres qui m'ont semblé tout aussi importants Sallie, Terence, Sandra, Millicent et Max.
On suit les histoires de chacun : le deuil des uns, l'alcoolisme des autres, celui d'une femme qui ne surmonte pas le deuil de enfant, la violence conjugale, le traumatisme de la guerre...

Je dois avouer qu'il m'a fallu du temps pour rentrer dans ce récit riche de dépaysement et de personnages hautement charismatiques.

Car oui, il y a aussi le bush Australien qui est un décors qui donne son sens à tous ses personnages. Il est beau, inspirant mais aussi aride, dur et mortel. Il est également un élément primordial du récit.

Une pluie d'étincelles est donc un livre aux mille ingrédients. Il m'a d’ailleurs fallu du temps pour vraiment tout intégrer comme je vous le disais et profiter de ma lecture. Pourtant, tout cela m'a semblé juste dans la mesure où c'est cette profusion de destins : gais, tragiques, optimistes, cruels et dans ce décors...qui ont rendus ce récit aussi poignant.



Bref, ce livre m'a beaucoup touché par la justesse des sentiments qu'il véhicule. Il m'aura aussi permis de voyager dans cette Australie magnifique qui réussit si bien aux livres de Tamara McKinley.

On ne présente plus Tamara McKinley, c’est une auteure que je lis très régulièrement, plusieurs fois par an d’ailleurs. J’avais été enchanté par L’été du repentir, à tel point que j’ai eu envie de relire un autre roman de l’auteure. J’ai donc jeté mon dévolu sur Une pluie d’étincelles.

Dans ce roman, nous sommes bien évidemment en Australie, en 1946, juste après la seconde guerre mondiale. Nous suivons la vie d’une petite communauté, dans un hameau, “Morgan’s Reach” construit autour d’un petit hôpital qui a toute son importance pour les grands domaines qui sont situés au tour.

L’action principale tourne autour de deux personnages, qui sont Rebeca Jackson et son fils de 9 ans Danny. Ces derniers ont rejoint le cocon familial après la guerre, Rebeca ayant perdu son mari. Elle apprend peu à peu à se reconstruire auprès des siens. Son père dirige l’hôpital, sa mère est infirmière tout comme elle, et tout comme la génération précédente qui est à l’initiative de la construction de l’hôpital.

Danny est un petit garçon débrouillard et un peu sauvage qui souffre de l’absence de son père. Il n’accepte pas sa mort et il est persuadé qu’il rentrera un jour. Or depuis quelques temps, un homme solitaire, un peu sauvage, et surtout habillé avec des anciens militaires se rapprochent de Morgan’s Reach. Danny est persuadé que c’est son père. Le petit garçon devient ingérable pour sa mère.

Le climat du livre est lourd, comme le temps. L’ambiance y est particulièrement très bien retranscrite par l’auteure. Dans le premier tiers, c’est assez tendu, il se passe plein de petites choses, de petits éléments qui se mettent en place, et qui menacent de mettre le feu aux poudres. Le titre du livre est donc particulièrement bien choisi. Je dois avouer que cette attente au début du livre m’a un petit peu agacé, même si après coup, j’ai bien compris que c’était voulu par l’auteure et que j’ai aimé l’effet escompté.

Parce qu’à un moment, évidemment, tout va s’embraser, et alors là, il m’a été tout simplement impossible de reposer ce livre. Il y avait plusieurs actions en même temps. La pression était intense et le suspense à son comble.

Et cerise sur le gâteau, j’étais certaine d’un fait durant toute ma lecture, à telle point que je n’ai même pas cherché plus loin, et à la dernière page, l’auteure m’apprend le contraire et j’ai adoré ça, c’est un peu comme la petite surprise de dernière minute. Bravo !

En bref, ce roman est un presque coup de coeur, que je vous recommande vivement.

L’auteure nous embarque dans une histoire prenante et touchante plantée dans un décor époustouflant par sa rudesse et sa beauté, un paradoxe qui fait écho aux remous qui ébranlent la vie des protagonistes. Le bush australien est une toile de fond qui permet de refléter avec une touche poétique les drames qui touchent l’ensemble du casting de personnages, ce qui se ressent dans leur personnalité. Tous sont confrontés à des épreuves douloureuses, comme le deuil. Ils sont en proie à une multitude d’émotions déchirantes qui sont exacerbées par l’environnement sec, inhospitalier et électrique.

Je ne qualifierai pas ce roman de feel-good car le sujet est bien trop profond et poignant. C’est un roman émouvant sur les conséquences dévastatrices de la guerre, la résilience et les relations humaines. À travers l’écriture dense, riche et délicate de l’auteure, on se retrouve dans l’atmosphère aussi étouffante que somptueuse de l’Australie sauvage, un milieu qui se prête aisément aux contradictions, à l’images des émotions humaines.

J’ai aimé découvrir cette communauté fragile mais soudée de Morgan’s Reach secouée par les aléas de la vie et de la nature. L’âpreté de l’environnement se traduit dans le caractère parfois difficile des personnages. Dans le même temps, ils apprennent à aller de l’avant et à renaître de leurs cendres, à l’image du cadre naturel alentour. Le violent incendie vient tout ravager, mais après les flammes et la destruction, la vie reprend progressivement ses droits. Cette mise en abyme est écrite avec une plume débordante de justesse.

Tous les ingrédients sont réunis pour une saga romanesque captivante dont l’épilogue pourrait bien vous arracher quelques larmes.

A lire si vous aimez les histoires de famille qui se déroulent dans un cadre majestueux !

I have read a few of Tamara KcKinley's novels and I have loved every one of them. Firestorm was no exception. Tamara has a real talent for capturing emotions in a very poignant way and she seems to understand the outback and the realities of life like no other Australian author. The outback locals were as tough and enduring as their landscape. They had to be or they wouldn't survive the harsh realities.

Although he didn't feature hugely in the story, I particularly loved the character of John Blake. The fleeting glimpse he finally caught of his wife Becky at the end of the book was the saddest yet the most beautiful of moments. Another character I thought was handled so well was Sandra Morgan. The stroppy lush was so self centred I wanted to laugh and slap her at the same time. She became a drag on her husband but I could also understand why he still loved her. She did however, eventually grow up as the firestorm and the crises in others lives took over.

Altogether another good read from Tamara McKinley.

Gelukkig niet alleen een mooie introductie, waarin stuk voor stuk de belangrijkste personages langskomen. Het is net, alsof je een schaakbord opzet en dan begint het spelen.
Mooi uitgewerkte personages, vooral Danny, het jongetje dat maar blijft denken dat zijn vader terug zal komen, heeft mijn hart gestolen.
De alcoholiste in het boek is wat mij betreft wat minder levensecht: hoe heerlijk dat ook zou zijn, ik ben bang dat mensen niet zo snel van hun verslaving afkomen.

Ik had Tamara McKinley per ongeluk aangezien voor Tamera Alexander, Amerikaans schrijfster van historische Christelijke romans. Dus dat was even omschakelen.

Het einde is enigszins verrassend, hoewel de lezer(es) het had kunnen zien aankomen.

Dan nog een e-boekprobleempje: de overgangen tussen de blokken worden wel aangegeven, maar wat mij betreft had er wat meer wit tussen mogen zitten.

Ce n’est pas mon préféré de Tamara McKinley mais quel bonheur de retrouver sa plume.
Pour ce roman elle nous entraîne en Australie, en 1946 dans l’état du Queensland, en plein cœur de l’outback.
Fabuleux portrait d’une famille, d’une communauté et de ce soldat anonyme revenu de la guerre atteint d’un cancer, on le suit tout au long du roman tout en ne sachant pas qui il est.
La fin est à la fois belle et terriblement émouvante.
Après un départ plutôt long, le temps de s’approprier tous les protagonistes j’ai adoré suivre le destin des femmes de la famille Morgan’s, 3 générations de femmes fortes.

Zoals alle boeken van Tamara McKinley pakt t je vanaf de eerste bladzijde. T is dat ik niet de tijd had om t in 1 ruk uit te lezen. Mooi geschreven en t neemt je meteen meteen mee naar de outback. Net alsof je er naast staat. Tot tranen geroerd en wat n verrassend einde. Je verwacht t ene maar krijgt uiteindelijk t andere… wow !!!

Kind of eye rolling, every terrible thing that can happen in a 2 day period does.

Malgré des descriptions magnifiques qui permettent aisément de se projeter dans l’outback australien si particulier, ce roman n’aura pas su m’émouvoir ni me convaincre. Il n’y a, à mon sens, aucun fil conducteur entre les différents personnages et beaucoup trop de lenteurs ainsi que de répétitions. Ce fut une déception.

En ganska sorglig bok med många barska personer och dialoger. Men fin ändå, utspelar sig i en väldigt exotisk miljö jämfört med svenska skogarna.

Summa summarum den var bra men sorglig. Hade inte velat läsa om den, däremot finns det ju stort utrymme för en mer upplyftande uppföljare.

Príbehy odohrávajúce sa v Austrálii, tie proste milujem. A ktokoľvek z tohto prostredia prinesie knihu, má u mňa (evidentne) istú jednu hviezdičku :-)

Dej knihy Láska v plameňoch sa odohráva práve v krajine u Protinožcov, ba čo viac, v štyridsiatych rokoch. Už samotný názov (najmä v originály) hovorí o tom, že slnkom vyprahnutú krajinu budú sužovať horúčavy a z toho sa ľahko rodiace požiare.

A superb read!! I loved how Tamara wrote the word Tea numerous times in the book instead of Dinner as here in Australia we say Tea for our evening meal not Dinner that's American!! And what an excellent ending! It certainly made me say out loud...Huh!!
