The Duke's Mysterious Lover

Rate this book
This rake is about to learn a lesson he’ll never forget!

If there’s one thing Society knows about Thorne Cumming, the new Duke of Stroken—do not call him Stroke for the love of God—it’s that he enjoys the pleasures offered by a lady. Or two ladies—or even a gentleman. Or all of them at once; he’s not picky when it comes to pleasure, or to satisfying others. But now his uncle’s gone and selfishly died, Thorne is having to learn how to Duke.

But dukes must choose their bedfellows carefully. In fact, there’s an entire brigade of matchmaking mamas out there determined to throw their sweet little angels into said bed and cry scandal. And Thorne’s doing everything he can to avoid such a disaster, mainly because despite what Society believes about his interests and abilities, he’s busy saving the Crown from a traitor who is days away from falling into the trap he’s been orchestrating for months!

Who would have thought his new valet would be the answer to both problems?

After years on stage, Kit Pastorino has come to London undercover; she wants to learn all she can about her estranged father before she reveals herself. What better way than to go into service dressed as a lad? Her new role as the Duke of Stroken’s footman is going well…until she finds herself unexpectedly promoted to the man’s valet. Her performing skills have never before been so useful—or more necessary.

But…Thorne is a charmer, and while he makes it clear he could bring her all sorts of pleasure, Kit is doing her best to resist his allure and maintain her disguise. Until the horrible, wonderful moment he finds out the truth about not just what lies beneath her trousers, but who she really is…and how she can help him spring his trap.

Truly naughty! Bring a fan and get ready to laugh in this fun conclusion to the Surprise! Dukes series!

A brilliant finale to a brilliant series. This isn’t a short book so no starting it late in the day but instead clear the decks & start it nice & early as once started believe you me it’s hard to put down. The pace is good & never lags, the characters ooze depth. The chemistry between Thorne & Kit is electric plus Bull is back & plays a significant part in the story. There’s plenty of humour & laugh out loud moments but there’s also tension as the net closes on Blackrose. Also don’t forget to read the author’s notes at the end they are always enlightening & show the depth of research which the author does & finally there’s news as to what’s to come – I for one am looking forward to the next series
I voluntarily read and reviewed a special copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own

I originally read Caroline Lee in the Second Chance Manor series with Scarlett Scott and Merry Farmer. The last book in that series was one that she wrote and it was my favorite and was so damn good. Not a huge fan of Scottish stories which are most of her books but wanted to read more by her. To be truthfully honest I could not get into her Bad in Plaid series so I haven’t read that and her new series, Tales of the Harlot's Guide, all three books were in 1st person which I hate so after pushing through book 1, I won’t read book 2 and 3. But I have been enjoying this series a lot. This is my 14th book by her. I was working on my June reads list and saw this book was released early so it was a nice surprise.

What an interesting story. So I don’t read book descriptions anymore so had no idea what this story was about. Very interesting and surprising indeed. I loved this couple, Kit and Thorne. They had so much freakin’ chemistry. I loved how they were with each other. The things they said or didn’t say. I loved how they loved. So much passion. Just a great read.

A marvelous ending to an amazing series.

I love Caroline Lee's little short books. Full of humor and fun, they are great for a quick read.

This book, however, like the others in the series, is not a short little quick read. It is definitely a full size order of historical romance. So plan to spend some time with it and having a fabulous time. I enjoyed how the story wrapped up every loose end I could think of. The villain gets what's coming to him and the two MCs get their HEA.

I enjoyed the satirical way the author presented the heroine dresses as a man trope. The hero's conflicting emotions concerning his feelings about the heroine and the unguarded way he expresses his struggle with having those feelings was some of the most engrossing reading in the series.

Can you guess my opinion? Yep, she did it again! Caroline wrote a truly wonderful conclusion to this fabulous series. I might even say, saved the best for last! Thorne & Kit are a true story of perfect acceptance and unmatched love. These two characters truly embody acceptance in all its beauty. They are both open and accepting of the people in their lives no matter their station, preference or gender. When Kit arrived in Thorne’s life dressed as a lad, it didn’t stop or make him question his attraction. He sees her for who she is, and that is the person he falls in love with… everything else is merely details. This made for such a free and moving, unconventional romance. As the series title says, there are many “surprises” to be had in this story and that kept me on the edge of my seat. Caroline’s humour shines throughout with many laugh out loud scenes and jolly interactions. It was such a joy to have the entire Surprise! Dukes cast throughout this story, truly giving us the closure we craved. The end to Blackrose and the happy ever after of each couple we’ve come to love. Be sure to pick this up if you love to laugh and love love in all its forms.

Well, that was a satisfying conclusion to a fun little series. I like when a histrom series doesn't take itself too seriously and this one was ridiculous and bonkers with the names (Duke of Effinghell, Peasgood, Stroking lolol) and also very self-aware of the ridiculousness. It was just plain fun and the evil guy got what was coming to him finally and it also was a beautiful story about love and acceptance and found family. I'm gonna miss these Scottish ex spies turned surprise Dukes (well, with the exception of Fawkes who is a chemist and Effinghell who isn't a spy). This one had the added fun of a hero who liked being controlled in the bedroom so that was also delightful.

The End to the Search for Blackrose…….

This is the story of Thorne and Kit. Two people that find a love that sees their respective souls. Although Thorne knows and tells her early on, it takes Kit a while to get to the place where she realizes the love she has for Thorne and believes that he loves her. They did get the HEA after much drama and action. I loved so much about this book. First, the characters were amazing, so well developed and lovable. This book wrapped up the whole search for Blackrose so you got a little of all the characters from the previous books as well. I loved the relationship of all the “surprise” Dukes and Bull. Their banter was funny, and added much entertainment especially Demon’s creative “bad language.”
As much as I love the book, there were some parts that were annoying. The story did seem to drag on a bit. I just wanted to get to the point of catching Blackrose. It also took forever for Kit to tell Thorne who she really was (a woman) and the name of her father. How could Thorne have been a spy and couldn’t figure out that his new valet that he was falling in love with was actually a woman. That just didn’t make sense and wasn’t believable. Once they were working together and had revealed their pasts, it was annoying that then Thorne decided to keep a big secret from her about her life. His reasoning was all bad and annoyed me more than added to the story. I found myself skimming through some pages because of it.
Overall, I did still enjoy the story and characters more than I was annoyed, and the HEA was worth it - 4⭐️s.

This was an extremely intricate and original well written read. I absolutely enjoyed this story with its delightful, unique, and exuberant characters, along with its intriguing romance. It was filled with drama, action, secret identities, humor, wit, subterfuge, attempted murder, mystery, dastardly, and murderous pasts, a hidden and surprising marriage, an exciting and unpredictable romance with such delicious and lovely steam, which after the riddance of a purely evil monster of a human being, love triumphed with a beautiful happy ending. I highly recommend reading!

I'm not crying, well maybe a little, I'm so sad to see the end ,of this fabulous series, The Surprise Duke's, have all been book boyfriend worthy, and let me tell you Thorne is freakin fantastic, he deserves so much love, even if he's having "feelings " for his new valet, Kit is a perfect fit for him, so much fun, with the perfect amount of steam, and low and behold, we finally get to see if Blackrose’s punishment, fits his crimes! I adore this cast of characters, as I'm sure you will, its so easy to fall in love with Thorne and Kit, as they figure things out, on the way to thier happily everafter, hurry up now, go on and grab this one!!

A long awaited ending to this series.

I have waited a long time for the completion of this series and in part was disappointed.
The resolution to making Blackrose pay for his misdeeds was satisfying for me but the lead up to it was in my opinion was overly long and I felt uncomfortable with parts I read.
I was hesitant to read this novel because of the synopsis outlining Thorne’s sexual activities and my disappointment in the author writing Thorne as bisexual, I am an older heterosexual female and bisexual activity is not my thing at all, plus I do not want to read about this topic period! My discomfort was intensified by my need to read Blackrose’s downfall.
I also was disappointed because I do not recall reading any reference to Thorne’s sexual liberalism in any of the previous novels…… I recall that there was a gay older couple written about but there were no details that distressed me.
My need for Blackrose to be punished eventually won out over my fear of reading about sexual activities that make me uncomfortable……. I had hoped that it would be revealed that the bisexual rhetoric would only be a “spy” cover backstory. Also I have read stories and watched film where the main male character was heterosexual but because of “falling in love” with what he assumed was a male made him question his own sexually…. This I can handle and can even lead to some amusing reading/watching moments.
I am disheartened that I could not give this novel the 5 stars I have given the previous novels but it distressed me to the extent that I could not honestly mark it higher than the 3 stars I have set as my lowest rating, it is a well written novel and I know a number of readers will enjoy it but it did not do it for me.
The activities (or reference to the activities) that were distressing to me were minor in length when compared to the overall length of the novel but the impact on my sensibilities will remain to colour my memories of the story.

4 stars. I enjoyed several things about the book: woman pretending to be a man to find out about her father, the closure to the series, the hero Thorne finally getting his match, and the historical notes by the author at the end. I did skip many pages of villain plot and physical scenes.

I’m glad this series is over! The long books, too much attention given to the villain plot, the ridiculous names.

I wonder how this author’s other books are. She did say they’re shorter.

The Duke’s Mysterious Lover is the sixth and final book in Caroline Lee’s Surprise! Dukes series. In this book, Thorne finds love and a fully capable partner, and the whole gang works together to finally bring down Blackrose in a satisfying conclusion to this entertaining series. Lee again provides a helpful synopsis of the previous books and story to remind readers what’s happened so readers can get right to Kit and Thorne’s story. Thorne, who’s been the good time guy throughout the series, is revealed in this book to be sensitive, caring, and ultimately in a search for True Love. Kit, alias for Katherine, is masquerading as a young man employed as Thorne’s valet while on the search for information about her father, and quickly falls for her employer. She also happens to be an accomplished violinist.

This story is a solid conclusion to the well-developed series and explores Thorne’s character in depth that hasn’t been possible whole he’s served as an accessory character. Like the previous books, this one is full of hilarity and steam in addition to some serious moments, too. Thorne was the only one who escaped Blackrose cleanly due to inheriting the title, and he’s felt guilt and the responsibility of needing to bring Blackrose to justice. He believes he should be the one alone to take Blackrose down because of what his friends and cousin have suffered, which has been a heavy burden. Kit helps him realize that isn’t true and everyone wants to help. With his trust in Kit, Thorne relinquishes control in the hunt for Blackrose and in the bedroom after Kit takes command. One thing I enjoyed in particular about this book is the exploration of gender, pleasure, and love; Thorne has until now sought pleasure with others fairly indiscriminately and it hasn’t mattered if his lovers wear skirts or pants. Thus, his attraction to his valet is not troubling because his valet wears pants, but because he does not want to take advantage of the power difference between lord and servant.

Age gap: Kit is 23yo, Thorne is probably in his early to mid-30s; when Thorne is adamant that Kit has to be Bull’s age, 17yo, he says he’s “at least a dozen years [her] senior.”

In this book, the prominent accessory characters are Thorne’s butler, Titsworth, and Bull. Titsworth is an absolute delight, trying to maintain the dignity of an aged butler while unfortunately not having the years and having quite a cheeky attitude. Bull is flamboyantly himself and full of smart quips. Characters from the previous books feature prominently in the latter half of the book during the Blackrose shakedown and takeout.

SFCP (safe for childless people): Main characters do not end up pregnant; vague talk of future children. Some characters from previous books who arrive to take Blackrose down are pregnant or have young babies.

I received an ARC copy in exchange for an honest and voluntary review.

4.5/5 Last in series

There is an overarching series plot and this is best read from the beginning of the series. All the previous MC make an appearance and it ends up being a team effort in taking Blackrose down, as you would expect at this point.

I’ve been looking forward to finding out how it would all end with Blackrose and to also read Thorne’s story. But even looking forward to this one, I put off reading it for a while because I didn’t want it all to end. However, it was worth the wait and I loved this book. It was a great ending for the series.

Thorne’s been a series favorite and he’s even more lovable in this book and so is Kit-I loved their dynamic together. I wasn’t expecting Thorne to be as open to love as he was but loved his confidence and it was endearing how hard he fell for Kit. I loved Kit because she’s confident as well and I also saw part of myself in her. She’s not good with romantic declarations and bit more reserved with her feelings about Thorne but she’s not any less loyal or loves with any less fervency. I loved seeing a heroine like her.

Thorne has been the one spearheading this campaign against Blackrose, connecting all the ex-agents and yet he doesn’t see himself as a leader. But still feels it’s all on his shoulder and it was refreshing seeing Kit take on a more dominant/care taking role with Thorne during intimate moments. He drew strength from her and it bolstered his decisions.

Even though the series is over, the author’s note gave info and a sneak peek of what the next series will look like.

There’s six encounters that starts fairly early in the story and are steamy and spaced evenly throughout.

It took me a while to finish this one, because it was a little disappointing to read tbh. And I was so looking forward to reading Thorne's story.

I enjoyed the relationship between Thorne and Kit, but their chemistry didn't hold up after it was revealed that Kit was a woman. The only thing keeping me interested was Blackrose finally getting caught, which I'm also not entirely happy with.

Still... I'm glad I was able to finish this series even though it didn't end with a bang.

Thorne's New Valet Has a Huge Surprise

Caroline Lee wraps up her Surprise! Dukes series with the irreverent Thorne as he closes in on Blackrose, William Stroughton - who is now the Earl of Bonkinbone after the death of his older brother. Thorne gets distracted with his adorable valet, Kit.

Thorne has been the jokester of the gang of young men who'd been taking in by Stroughton. I was looking forward to a story and he did not disappoint. Phone is A Saturn more introspective character than I thought he would be. And I thought he was very charming.

Kit cme into his world and knocked it sideways. He was falling in love his valet already but then Kit confesses her secret - that she's a woman. So much the better! As things turn out she is also instrumental for bringing down their enemy. You'll just have to read to see how.

I enjoyed that Ms. Lee did not drag out them falling in love because there is so much story to cover wrapping up the series and achieving the endgame off destroying Blackrose. All of the couples from the preceding books figure prominently in the story but there is a lot of Bull and he is a fantastic character.

You definitely want to read the entire series before you get to this one. You might be a little lost if you try to just jump into the series with this story and you would really lose all the wonderful appearances from Thorne in the proceeding books.

5 huge stars for this sexy, exciting and funny conclusion to the Surprise! Dukes series.

5 stars all around!

Oh my goodness. This was a slam bang finish for this series! Thorne and Kit absolutely knocked it out of the park for me. Thorne lived up to all the hype that he built for himself throughout the series. He was so dang likeable and affable and romantic etc, etc. I just love it when an author gives us just what we want and expect in a hero….so much so that I’m a little shocked and surprised at how perfect he turned out!

Kit was a beautiful counterpart for Thorne. She was bold, confident, talented, and funny. Her attempts at being valet to a teasing Thorne were such funny moments. I could feel the teasing and excitement in those moments. It was so good. Their budding friendship and relationship was so lovely. I just can’t help but love it when the main characters desire to be loved for their beautiful selves instead of their titles or money. Both of them were seeking that type of connection.

And Bull! Wow. I can’t wait for his story. His side character blew me away with his antics and confidence. I also loved his ability to fidget continuously. It was endearing.

A shout out to Titsworth as well. His character had me rolling on numerous occasions. His banter with Thorne was just hilarious.

Caroline Lee did it all in this book. There was love, romance, passion, heartbreak, and family. Oh the love of family (blood or otherwise,) was such a pervasive theme in this book. It was just beautifully funny and spicy. Thank you Ms. Lee for sharing your amazing talent for combining these visceral emotions into one amazing story. ❤️

I put off reading the last book of this series for quite a while! When I read the blurb I knew it was not my cup of tea!
I am soooo tired of trans, queer etc being in everything just to make it palatable or acceptable and it is not! But I wanted to read the Blackrose finale and I did but honestly I did skip over parts that including the Duke of Stroken aka Thorne sexuality which his preference indicates BI!? We have Kit aka Katherine Pastorino a maestro violinist who looks menswear more than dresses even after she’s exposed!
Some things I didn’t understand was her mother grating her freedoms to explore and tell her the truth about sex? Her mother adhered to a strict guidelines herself but you will have to read to find out how.
I loved Thorne and Kits chemistry and didn’t see how Thorne was clueless when Bill and everyone else knew!
Thorne did carry a lot of weight and Kit allowed him to express himself and bare his burden! There was vital info withheld from Kit and Thorne should have allowed her to make her own decisions!
Thorne played the hero once and almost twice but it was definitely meant for Bull to save the day and lead into his own series!
I usually love this author and her brand of silliness and own several books but I don’t find some of the dialogue witty or necessary!

This one is the final book of the series where we will finally catch the big bad villain that’s been haunting all the main characters along the way. Thorne is the only unmarried friend left, so obviously this is his book. He’s also taken on much of the burden of catching the treasonous villain because he doesn’t have a wife or children to consider. He does however have a very handsome young footman who has caught his attention and who he has promoted to valet. Kit is not actually a young man but actually the daughter of a famous opera singer and some unknown nobleman, working as a footman so that she can get closer to the society where her father lives. She’s just trying to catch a glimpse of this absent father to make her own judgment about his character. However, being promoted to Thorne’s valet puts her in very close proximity to a very attractive man and she’s sorely tempted to give in. It’s a sweet sort of romance built on their personalities rather than their outward social appearance and Thorne is absolutely thrilled to learn that Kit is a woman (and possibly marriageable). We also get to reconvene with all the other Surprise! Dukes as they plot the final showdown. Super fun conclusion to the series.

Deception, Heir, Finding Love:
A brilliantly written mystery romance that only this author could get away with.
Stunning shocking characters took me on a tilt-a-whirl of a story that captured me from the start and held me there until the very explosive ending.
The story was quite long but filled with much humor, old friends being revisited with, a happy ending after much frustration, passion that had the pages not just smoldering but igniting to the point of leaving this reader breathless more than once.
This series has been such a treat to read. I'm impressed to see how captivating these authors stories are. So much humor, charm, charisma between the characters, plus a very intriguing plot that was a bit deceptive in the beginning with the villain finally getting his due.

I like Caroline Lee , her books are well written, they are meant to be silly and sometimes a little mocking with modern references, sometimes over done, sometimes funny, but you know what you are getting most of the time. I enjoyed most of the series.

Spoilers ahead… 🫣

This books is More like a 2.5 star- I liked the end of the evil Blackrose, I disliked the love story. We all fell in love with the hero in the last 5 books, with his charm, his ladies man appearance, and supposedly good looks. To find out he falls for a man? - as a heterosexual female that fell in love with this man I was so disappointed. Yes, it was somewhat salvageable when we find out the man is an actual woman, but still, he acted like the woman in the relationship, and sometimes that is fun, but it just didn’t match the last 5 books.
The romance was lacking, I didn’t like the heroine that much. Maybe an unpopular opinion, but it’s my opinion.

Well, we have come to the end of Blackrose. I have loved this series. Just like the others in this series, this book has lots of banter, lots of laughs and lots of characters whose camaraderie is so important. There is the mystery of Kit’s birth but that is fairly easy to figure out. I thought Thorne was a great character. He is conflicted in his life with being thrown in the dukedom. We can all understand stress and what it does to us. Caroline’s writing is very good and her words compel you to keep reading and laughing. I had two issues with this story. One, it is repetitive and it went on a little too long. The other is the trope – it is my least favorite although I know it is a popular one. I could get past that but I really don’t like the lying aspect for no real reason. I did not feel this story was up to par with the other books in this series.

All the Answers!
In this, the last of the the series, we finally learn the identity of the truly bad guy, the one who has been very busily working against the Crown. Thorne and his friends have worked so hard to uncover his identity and bring him to justice.
In amongst this all, Thorne and Kit meet under comically unusual circumstances and eventually find their happy ever after. (Whew! For a while there I thought that was just not going to happen).
I enjoyed this story so much. It has a little bit of all I enjoy in a good telling of a romantic adventure including intrigue, solving of a mystery and a passionate romance.
I read an early copy of this book and am happy to leave my voluntary review.

Author Caroline Lee gives us another amazing, hot, hysterical historical story with the release of “The Duke's Mysterious Lover”. This is the final book of the Surprise Dukes series. The author wraps everything up in a big bow, while giving a glimpse into a future series. This book can be read as a stand alone, due to the author giving a synopsis of the previous books at the beginning. However, you are seriously missing out if you skip the full series. Just sayin.
Filled with quick witted banter, and quirky, uniquely named characters that Lee is known for, the story of Thorne and Kit will entertain and delight till the very last page.

I received an e copy from the author, this is my honest review, voluntarily given.

what a ride ..

I’ve been waiting for Thorne’s story… I’ve read all the books in this series, they have been solid 4/5 stars … but this, the story of Thorne and Kit is beyond 5 stars.. it completely wraps up the shared story line through all the books with Blackrose.. Thorne has been my favorite thru all the books, there was just a sadness about him as the other dukes lives moved on… he meets Kit, and well he gets his HEA..

How the Blackrose loop was resolved was also very satisfying, didn’t feel cheated at all…. All 6 books are worth the time. Ms Lee’s writing style and banter always has me laughing out loud, which this one did throughout … there is always angst, love, sadness and laughs…which is how all stories should be.🥂🥂

Every book I read from this series, I think, this is it. They won’t get better. Then Caroline Lee releases a new one. I was in happy heart tears by 33% in Thorne and Kit’s story. The queer representation and pure love was beautiful and authentic, and I’m so grateful to Caroline for the care she took. By the sixth book, she’s woven such a tapestry of love and friendship between all the characters, and I adored seeing glimpses of their happy lives. As the separate couples came together to resolve the overarching conflict, it felt natural and allowed each lead to shine. I adored this. I couldn’t imagine a perfect ending to this glorious series, and yet I got it. I cant wait to see what Caroline Lee does next.

This was a raunchy steamy end to the hunt to take down their former evil leader with Thorne and his new valet Kit plotting his downfall by using his past against him. Thorne comes on strong in his attraction to what he at first thought was a young man but Kit gives it right back until she’s forced to reveal her gender. Thorne wants to marry Kit but she rebuffs him and he keeps a pretty big secret that could change her life and her mind. There’s lots of cross dressing, head shaking how could they get away with it schemes, funny innuendos, and a few nail biting moments. It was great to catch up with previous characters in a series I didn’t want to end.

What an end to a series!

Thorne, Duke of Stroken, is the unexpected Duke who craves pleasure in any form. He hires a footman, who he then promotes to his valet. His only issue is his obsession with said valet. Thorne “was an equal opportunities lover.”

Katherine ‘Kit’ Pastorino was trying to find her father. Growing up, her mother had told her the name of her father, but Kit had never met him. Using her theatrical skills, Kit decided that dressing as a lad was safer while she tried to get to know her father.

Unfortunately, what Kit doesn’t realise is how tangled up her father is with Thorne.

A fitting ending to a series full of espionage, spice and love.

While I am sad this was the last book in the Surprise! Dukes series, I am also happy because there was Bull, Bull and more Bull in this story. Thorne isn’t bothered by being interested in his new valet so it’s a nice surprise for him that Kit is also a woman he can marry. It is so funny how long it takes him to realize this when most everyone else has it all figured out. Kit and Bull are hilarious together (the ball). Blackrose gets what’s coming to him finally. Halfway through, I was beginning to see where the next series might lead and for the Bull fans, it leads to where we wanted to go. Excellent and satisfying conclusion to the series.
