4.25 ★— This book struck the perfect balance between cozy and heartfelt, with an emotional plot line that I really enjoyed!
Living in a small town, Hedge Witch Hecate Goodwin, or Kate, has been living a fairly isolated existence, her witch designation marking her to forever exist on the periphery of people’s lives. Still grieving her mother’s death and haunted by strange nightmares, Kate’s carefully coordinated routine is thrown into chaos when an old crush from a decade ago reappears and she’s suddenly tasked with organizing the witches’ annual Halloween gathering.
This book really managed to juggle all its elements so well. Kate is the dutiful, people-pleasing daughter living that small-town life, trying to convince herself she’s content with the state her world is in. The story explores her grief over her mother’s death beautifully, and those feelings of isolation in the beginning of the story were portrayed with a lot of care. At the same time, the town setting is the cozy, slightly spooky place of my Halloween dreams! It's all lush, dark forests and autumnal charm with Kate living in a cottage that seemed so warm and cozy, I wanted to live in it as well!
There’s also a Halloween festival, pumpkin carving, and all the seasonally appropriate activities you’d hope for in a witchy contemporary romance.
Speaking of romance, I really enjoyed that aspect too! The MMC, Matthew, is a swoony and kind character, and his long-standing crush on Kate is clear from their first meeting after ten years. Their relationship develops naturally, and while his role in the larger plot was a bit predictable, it was still very satisfying to see it play out.
The story also touches on more serious themes, like the aforementioned grief and parental loss, but these never weighed the narrative down. They felt thoughtfully fitted into how the story’s arc unfolded.
And, one more thing I absolutely loved: the many descriptions of witchy recipes and food the author managed to add into this story. It just made it all the more atmospheric and made me hungry during my read!
This is one of those books where I’d love a sequel. Maybe one focused on one of Kate’s sisters? Just to see how the other characters fare after the ending. There’s still so much that could be explored here, and I’d absolutely love to read more of this world and the different witch covens.
