Heather Peyton was thrilled when the Ashleys hired her as a companion and brought her to their Cornwall estate. Young, penniless, alone in the world, she was eager to call someplace home. And when Heather saw the magnificent rose-strewn grounds of Rosemerryn, she knew she had at last found a haven. Perched upon the jagged rocks overlooking the violent sea, Rosemerryn almost seemed a part of the fearsome cliffs. Though the strong-willed elderly aunt didn't want a companion, they soon become adversaries. Soon Heather learned that danger as well as beauty lurked in Rosemerryn--in ghosts long dead, in mysterie yet unsolved, and even in the arms of Geoffrey Ashley, the enigmatic master of Rosemerryn!

This review is of “The House of Shadowed Roses” by Carol Warburton.
The book begins with death, as Edwin Ashley and his wife Vanessa both die in an accidental fire after Edwin accuses Vanessa of being unfaithful to him.
Fast forward many years. Heather Peyton, the lead character in the book, is hired by the Ashley family to act as a companion to Morgana Bassett, an old woman who has health issues, at their family home, Rosemerryn. As soon as Heather is hired, she is immediately plunged into the dysfunctional dynamics of the Ashley family.
Morgana lives at Rosemerryn with her nephews, Geoffrey and Clifford (Geoffrey is a bachelor; Clifford is married; his wife, Louise, went to the same school as Heather did, and doesn’t miss a chance to flaunt her marriage to a rich man to Heather), and her niece, Delcine. Delcine is fearful that her mother, Vanessa’s, ghost is haunting the property. Geoffrey is also scarred physically; his hands were burned trying to save Edwin and Vanessa from the fire which took their lives.
As Heather’s time at Rosemerryn continues, she becomes the de facto governess for Delcine.. Meanwhile, Clifford keeps coming after Heather, trying to rape her twice and kill her. He doesn’t succeed, and he and Louise are eventually banished to Australia. Heather falls in love with Geoffrey, and they become engaged, thinking their problems are over.
They’re wrong! Heather is entombed by a jilted suitor, and is later rescued by Geoffrey to go toward their Happily Ever After.
Upside: The upside here goes to...ME! For having the intestinal fortitude to get through yet another crappy book. My philosophy: I’ve spent nearly five figures on books, I might as well read them all no matter how bad they are!
Downside: There is NOTHING good here. The characters are flat and uninteresting. I honestly didn’t care if Heather lived or died. Or anyone else for that matter,
Sex: A few chaste kisses make up the “sex” in the book.
Violence: Clifford tries to kill Heather by strangulation and by killing her with a falling rock. Edwin tries to kill Vanessa at the beginning of the book (It runs in the family). The violence is not graphic and mostly bloodless.
Bottom Line: “The House of Shadowed Roses” is a wilted, limp book.

TRAMA: Heather Peyton era entusiasta quando gli Ashleys la assunsero come dama di compagnia e la condussero nella loro proprietà a Cornwall. Giovane,senza soldi,senza nessuno al mondo,era ansiosa di chiamare qualsiasi posto “casa”. E quando Heather vide la terra di Rosemerryn coperta di magnifiche rose, seppe che aveva finalmente trovato un rifugio. Arroccata sulle rocce frastagliate a picco sul mare impetuoso, Rosemerryn sembrava quasi una parte di quelle temibili scogliere .Anche se la volitiva vecchia zia non voleva una compagnia, ben presto divennero avversarie. Presto Heather apprese che a Rosemerryn si nascondevano il pericolo così come la bellezza - nei fantasmi morti da tempo, nei misteri ancora irrisolti, e persino tra le braccia di Geoffrey Ashley, il padrone enigmatico di Rosemerryn!
Quando ho preso tra le mani questo libro ho provato un tuffo al cuore e non ho potuto fare a meno di rileggerlo con enorme piacere. E’ stato il mio primo romanzo d’amore. A dir poco bellissimo. E’ da qui che è nata la mia passione per le storie piene di romanticismo e per questo ho deciso di recensirlo in modo da farlo conoscere a tutti. Purtroppo non so se è possibile trovarlo in commercio vita che è piuttosto datato,ma se per caso lo trovate in una vecchia bancarella non lasciatevelo sfuggire. E’ davvero speciale. Ambientato di certo non nella nostra epoca è una rievocazione in stile della vita che conducevano le dame di compagnia. La protagonista è Heather Peyton una giovane e ingenua ragazza in cerca di un lavoro che viene accolta dalla famiglia Ashley per fare da dama di compagnia della vecchia signora Morgana Bassett (saggia,osservatrice e consigliera). Heather si ritrova in un mondo a lei sconosciuto dove la ricchezza fa da padrone e dove il suo posto sembra essere stare relegata in un angolo. Ma accanto alla difficile padrona di casa ci sono altri personaggi. C’è il padrone della tenuta di Rosemerryn,Geoffrey,misterioso,affascinante,con le mani coperte da cicatrici e con un sguardo penetrante. C’è il fratello Clifford e la moglie Louise che passano il tempo a portare avanti oscure macchinazioni. C’è Delcine,la sorellina minore di Geoffrey traumatizzata da un incendio,c’è Dennis un lontano cugino che fa una corte spietata a Heather. E tanti altri personaggi minori che contribuiscono a rendere ben credibile un’ambientazione davvero piena di fascino. La brughiera con la sua nebbia e le sue profumate piante,le feste alla tenuta con abiti di bellissima foggia,le gare di cavalli,le passeggiate in riva al mare in cerca di tesori nascosti,la fuga nei boschi,il romanticismo del giorno delle Rose,il mistero dell’incendio,un tentato omicidio,morte,desiderio di vendetta. Insomma c’è di tutto. Ma soprattutto una passione fatta di semplici sguardi,di tremule carezze,di piccoli sorrisi,dove una rosa può dire tutto e al tempo stesso niente. Un intreccio complesso che la Warburton ha saputo esporre con mirabile maestria in un linguaggio a tratti forbito ma di grande effetto. Ogni pagina ha saputo catapultarmi lontano anni luce dalla nostra epoca lasciandomi in bocca il gusto dolceamaro di un amore all’apparenza impossibile,dove le convenzioni sociali sembrano dominare su tutto ,tranne che sul cuore . Non credo di aver mai letto una storia così appassionante e piena di emozioni contrastanti. Un happy ending meritato e una standing ovation per 475 pagine di pura emozione.
