Monster Match

Spinning Out of Control

Rate this book
Seven months ago, Caleb’s life was turned upside down. A terrible car accident took away his hand, his career, and the confidence he once had. Feeling like a monster himself is as good a reason as any to join a monster dating app. Surely a monster wouldn’t be particular about looks, would they? Teracht is a small spider. Well, small in the monster world, anyway. The human world offers the opportunity to, hopefully, not be eaten, and his webbing is useful in all sorts of medical and military technology. But what is a little spider creature with a big domination kink and a fear of leaving the house supposed to do to meet someone? Can a damaged human and a shy monster overcome their insecurities to bring them closer together? Can confidence be gained through control, even in the midst of life’s tangled webs? Spinning Out of Control is a monster-human romance and part of the Monster Match collection.

Cutenessssssssss in spiderform, so adorable.
I had somehow reckoned with pure smut, my brain must have been quite autonomous again. So call me surprised that there was actually a plot here and that it was all overly cute.
There are enough sexually interesting scenes, so I had my expectations fulfilled, even though I was anticipating something else. I must have consumed too much porn with spiders in the past. Oh dear, sometimes it would be nice to have less fantasy.
Anyway, this book was really wonderful. The beginning was a little choppy and I struggled briefly with how Caleb's disabilities would fit into this monster story. But if you have a little patience, you can really enjoy the whole thing. It takes a little while to get into both characters and I have to admit that some things about Teracht are not quite coherent for me yet. But my goodness, he's a monster and is quite simply different and perhaps shouldn't be judged according to human parameters.

“I know that you feel you lost something very important when you were in your accident. But one thing I learned in the monster world is that scars mean you survived. You fought your way free, and maybe you paid a price for it. But you’re alive because you survived whatever was trying to hurt you. That doesn’t mean that it doesn’t hurt or that you aren’t scared. But you still have your life, which is something you can’t ever get back once it’s lost.” 💞🫠💞

Being trapped in a spider's web, helplessly at the mercy of ...
Yes ok, my mind is running amok again, what was in my coffee today ...

I wanted him to feel the power I had over him, to know that he was helpless in my web, trapped, my prey, my plaything, unless I felt like letting him go. And I didn’t want to. Just seeing his one wrist bound to my web sent a heat through me that I had not known before. 🥵🕷️🥵

Caleb nearly melted into my web, boneless and sweaty and spent. He looked absolutely gorgeous, his blond hair tousled, his cheeks streaked with lines from his tears of frustration and pleasure. I wanted him to always look that way, so satisfied and thoroughly fucked by my hand. 🕸️🤤🕸️

🕸️Having a big, sexy monster tie me up and pleasure me? I mean, that sounds pretty hot.🕸️

I weirdly have to agree. ‘Cause spiders? Eek.
But Teracht was surprisingly adorable and kinda hot. I liked how the author kept him sort of non-sexual, but incorporated different things for them to still feel pleasure together.
Very sweet and loving, how they made the other better, both stepped out of their comfort zones, how they became happier once they met.

“Please, sir, can I come?” I moaned. Teracht’s movements suddenly slowed. “No, pet, you can’t. We’ve barely gotten started.”

Who knew the sweet spider monster had a pleasure Dom hiding in his web?
Loved the dominance, the exploring together, the kinky primal play. It all worked really well, and now I kinda wanna check out more of this series, ‘cause hopefully they’ll all be weird fun stories as this one was.

“But when I catch you, and I will, I’m going to pleasure you until you beg for mercy.”

This had potential for major hurt/comfort but was so surface-level as to not be engaging at all.

A horrendous cheesefest, it had no angst, no plot, and no emotional engagement. I was bored.

Also, as much as I appreciated the idea of Caleb wanting to share food experiences with Teracht, you can't just...blend food into liquid without actually adding liquid. They blend fried rice. Fried rice! Please! It would turn into glue!! I legit cried laughing at this scene.

That may be the one and only time I think a spider is cute

This book was cute. I don't think there's any other word to describe it; the romance was incredibly fast paced but really sweet, the story was heart-wrenching for the first few pages but got tooth-achingly sweet pretty fast and even the sex was cute. When did BDSM ever turn cute? Well, now, apparently.

The story's cuteness was not a bad thing per se; it was a nice read. Maybe I'd have appreciated a bit more substance to the plot, that was mainly focused on spicy scene after spicy scene, but overall: it was a nice and fun read!

I got into this book hoping it'd cure my arachnophobia— it obviously didn't. But hey, baby steps!

I was glad that he enjoyed it, though watching my monster boyfriend drink Chinese food from a glass had not been on my relationship bingo card.

This book made me sob.
As someone with a physical disability caused by an accident, I felt Caleb's struggle deep in my soul. It's exhausting being disabled out in the world, but the world is worth seeing and experiencing even if it comes with judgemental jerks and rude comments.

2.5; the word of the day is "boring"

We all got a couple of monster romances under our belt now, right? I ask because I don't know if this author didn't know the rules and if the people who helped her with the book also didn't know the rules, but this isn't how the game is played.

First things first, credit where credit is due. The disability rep was great. How Caleb talks about his disability and his feelings surrounding his accident and life after felt real and helped establish his character from early on. I don't like how his character began and ended with his disability but we'll get to that later. Teracht was a sweet cinnamon roll and I think gentleness was exactly what Caleb needed. They we're in similar places in life but also not and became with the other needed. I was excited to see how their story played out.

Unfortunately, I was let down immensely because child I've had more fun watching paint dry.

First up, the characters. They were pretty dull in lifeless. Not once didvCaleb and Teracht feel like a couple. More like awkward touchy friends Who relied on porn to navigate a physical relationship. And that's not even me being snarky, that's literally what happened. They're awkwardness wasn't charming but uncomfortable and the smut left much to be desired. I've seen some people say that Teracht was dominating and all I can do is cackle in dark romance, because if that's what you think dominate is, you're going to be petrified if you even glance in the direction in some of the books I've read.

Something that was really off putting was how Caleb talked about Teracht. From explaining what he ate to his anatomy, Caleb kept calling him weird and making faces whenever Teracht said or anything that wasn't human. He's not human, that's literally the point. And I don't know but when I meet somebody who's different from me, I don't point out those differences and then call them weird non stop. I kept waiting for things to become normalized, like usually happens as a relationship progresses but I came up short. Caleb ended up becoming a character I didn't want to read about. I'm not going to say he was mean but it didn't come off as sweet or romantic either. Not that there was much of a romance here to begin with, which brings me to my biggest problems with this book.

This didn't feel like a romance. Nothing felt endearing or sweet or romantic. There was no life to the book, nothing to get excited about or root for. It just was. And I'm not saying that is in and of itself a bad thing. I love slow moving books but those books put so much energy and life into their characters because that's what the story relies on, especially when there's not a whole lot of accoutrements to distract. But this wasn't a fun character story or a smutty romp (because the smut was minimal and not great). It just was and that's not a compliment.

Then there's the writing. It wasn't necessarily bad but the dialogue was so stiff and lifeless. There was no "yes and" so a lot of the conversations ended up closed. It created several awkward moments in the book. I think it was supposed to be perceived as cute but it ends up creating a lot of dead air and killing whatever progression was attempting to be made. They're inner dialogue wasn't much better. It didn't help move scenes along, established their characters or their feelings for each other. And because these moments were so long, It dragged and really affected the pacing of the story, making things extremely boring.

That's the biggest crime this book commits. It was boring. This wasn't a story but words on a page that fell flat to every single time. I felt nothing except my time was wasted. This book is for someone, I just don't know who they are. 2.5 stars but I'm rounding down because the fact that Teracht didn't question what the military was doing with his webs really didn't sit right with me. You should be concerned. There's a reason why the military isn't portrayed as heroes in books with monsters. I don't know if that was a collective decision because this is a multi author series set in the same universe, but it didn't sit right with me that the military had so much control over the monsters. And even that was boring, come on!

What a wonderful addition to the Monster Match series.
A scarred human who feels like a monster since his accident and a shy monster who’s as soft as his webs.
They fit perfectly and are healing and soothing to each other’s bodies and souls.
A great read, quite enjoyable, and with some surprising spicy dynamics.
The author has a captivating way of writing, with lovable layered crafted characters, and a wonderful scenery development!

I loved this one! Caleb and Teracht are both afraid of going out into the world, Caleb because he was in an accident that altered his appearance, and Teracht because he doesn’t want others to be afraid of him. Plus his home world was very unforgiving since he was small for his kind.
Teracht is shy but has “big dom dreams” which I loved, and Caleb did too!! I loved how they had a lot of fun with Teracht’s webs, and helped each other do some healing.

this was a sweet story about an insecure monster and an insecure ex-model.

caleb's story was sad because his life was altered after the accident without it being his fault.

but at least he got to meet teracht and they're both happy now!

It was cute, lovely and adorable. They make such a cute couple and I loved the progress they both made throughout the story together. They healed each other and encouraged each other. Also, really enjoyed that there was no break up in the middle of the story

I humbly suggest a title change.

All About Caleb would definitely suit this book better.

I’m honestly just disappointed. The potential was there, but it lacked. It was mostly a tale of Caleb thriving while Teracht made him happy. Even when Teracht was the main focus, it was still about Caleb. And some of the language used when talking about/to precious Teracht was… icky.

Idk. The vibe was just all the way off. It didn’t have enough of anything aside from schmexy scenes to really cement the story and develop it beyond their physical connection for me. Brief mentions of things and short, cliff notes versions of explanations just made it feel like the smüt story of the series.

Ugh. For real, all I did for the most part was feel like Teracht could do better than someone who didn’t put near as much effort into accommodating or learning about him as he did for Caleb. The few sweet bits just couldn’t and didn’t erase everything that felt off.

3.75/5. Once again, aside from a couple of mentions of Cael and the town, the deep interconnection was missing and it really put a sizable damper on things for me. The potential was there for such a good story, and it would benefit from a rework and more time/content, but it’s just not all there and it wasn’t it for me. It needed some editing as well, and that’s that for me and my rambling of unwanted opinions.

Caleb was badly injured in a car accident with permanent disabilities, PTSD and depression. He meets Teracht on Monster Match, a spider like shut-in with OCD. Both are hiding from the world to protect themselves from pain and fear. It's a sweet story with a gentle Teracht giving pleasure to Caleb even though he feels little himself, just satisfaction, primal urges and a delight in controlling. I wish I didn't dislike spiders as much as I do because Teracht is a worthy one. Caleb had to accept his past was over, move on through the pain and grief and be grateful he had life. I received a copy of this book and this is my voluntary opinion.

Tiffany Robert’s spidermate series has created a spider monster lover out of me that will probably never die. A shy, lonely monster spider with a human suffering with some insecurities after an injury that permanently altered his appearance seemed like it would be the perfect pair but I didn’t feel the connection 🥺

And now I can firmly say that monster BDSM is just not for me, I was cringing at every ‘sir’ and ‘pet’ and honestly I couldn’t continue after tossing Chinese food into a blender to drink it. 🙈

Caleb Webster, human (29), former model, car accident survivor
Teracht, atauri (???), spinner for the military (provides webbing for unknown uses)

I'm conflicted about this story. I enjoyed it, but the relationship felt a little fast, superficial, and uneven. The relationship developed very quickly and without any real impediments or tension, leaving the story feeling flat and overly simple, when there was so much opportunity to make it more. I really wish they had joined the app looking for friendship and then read a bit more of a slow burn friends to lovers book.

Here's the thing, I have a difficult time with authors giving their characters a lot of trauma and then not enough time/space to realistically deal with the fallout before falling into a forever relationship. To that end this relationship felt too soon after Caleb's accident, when he was still deep in the clutches of grief, self-pity, and uncertainty of the future. Signing up for a dating app in his headspace didn't feel likely or healthy.

Suspending my reservations on that front the relationship development felt very Caleb-centric, which wouldn't have bothered me had Teracht been a more confident character and not needed a little more care, concern, and consideration than he got. In the end I didn't really feel the love so much as I was told about it and to be brutally honest, it felt a little like they were in a relationship because neither felt they had any other options.

All that said, I actually loved the unusual sexy fun times, with their mutual explorations and incompatible physiology. The later scenes really delivered, especially the .

Ultimately, this was a light, quick, kinky read that I enjoyed.

I was given an ARC and voluntarily wrote an honest review.

Pay attention to the content warning at the beginning of the book. In addition to what was mentioned, there was also quite a bit of kink like bondage, primal play, etc. This definitely had some heavy moments and I even cried a few times because it struck some chords with me. Caleb was going through a lot and he hadn’t really dealt with it before meeting Teracht (Ter). Ter also had his own issues and they honestly helped each other.

I liked Ter from when we saw him in Cael’s book. I honestly thought we’d see more of Cael at the very least since he was really Ter’s only friend. One complaint about the series I have is the fact that we don’t see much outside of the main characters really. I want to see more of their world, more of their lives, outside of each other.

Caleb was pansexual and we never really got a label for what Ter was. I’m not really sure how to describe Ter. He doesn’t really seem asexual since he’s attracted to Caleb right off the bat; it was because of his monster species and his previous life that he can’t really get sexual gratification. However he found joy in pleasuring Caleb, even if he didn’t technically get anything out of it himself. I would like to see more of them living together, more of friends and family, more of Caleb’s new job that gave him a sense of purpose and fulfillment. I’d probably give this 4 out of 5 stars.

Caleb: human, used to be a model before he got into a car accident (not his fault), no siblings, parents out of state, 29, pansexual
Teracht (Ter): spider, Cael’s friend, only needs 1-2 hours of sleep, gravitated towards guy in porn videos

Ok I am not one to get emotional when reading but this book had me teary eyed several times. This is one of the most heartfelt, sweetest romances let alone monster romances I have ever read. Caleb survived a horrible car accident that left him heavily scarred and without his right hand. Life since the accident has been such a struggle for him. Going from being an outgoing model with lots of friends to being scarred and lonely was very jarring for Caleb. When he sees a spider monster on the dating app he sometime perused he is intrigued. Their first meeting starts out not so well but things turn around. Teracht left certain death in the monster world to live amongst humans. He's content with his life staying in his home and never really leaving but the loneliness begins to be too much. When he meets Caleb for the first time it is a bit rocky. As they learn more about each other some of the tension fades and Teracht finds he really likes Calebs company. These two were the sweetest, most awkward, and endearing characters ever. I absolutely loved Terachts naivety and purity. He wasn't phased by Calebs appearace and truly wanted to help him heal. I also really liked that both characters helped and supported each other through their struggles. It was amazing reading Caleb grow in his confidence and how helping Teracht motivated him to be brave. I would not doubt recommend this book to those who love cozy monster romance, disability and mental health representation, low angst, web bondage, a bit of primal play, sexy lessons, and a couple who is healing each other.

I listened to the audiobook.

Honestly, I’m not entirely sure how I feel about it. There were definitely things I appreciated, but also a few elements that didn’t quite work for me.

One of the biggest highlights for me was the disability representation. It felt honest, respectful, and fully integrated into the character’s life, not just something tacked on for diversity points. The narration was also a clear strength—professional, emotive, and engaging from start to finish.

Where things fell short was in the storytelling itself. The plot felt minimal, and the fact that most of the book takes place in a single setting—the house—made the pacing feel slow and the dynamics repetitive. I also found the relationship development lacking real depth. The connection between the characters never fully evolved beyond the surface level.

Now, I love my smut and appreciate well-written sexy moments in books—they can add so much to character dynamics and pacing. But in this case, there was simply too much of it. The constant focus on sex started to feel like a disservice to the story itself. It took up space that could’ve been used to develop the characters more deeply or to expand the plot beyond the walls of a single house. I found myself wanting more variety—more emotional growth, more tension, more story.

Overall, Spinning Out of Control had some standout moments—especially in its narration and disability rep—but it didn’t fully land for me. I was hoping for a bit more plot and emotional depth to go along with the steam.

Spinning out of Control by Kit Barrie is probably my top monster romance of April, 2024! This book had my heart from the first page and will forever have a special place there.

Caleb is the human MMC that has faced a tragic life event that has changed his world. Without being “handsome” and “two – handed” anymore Caleb is casted out from the modeling world. Caleb is someone that is suffering the mental burden of losing his world. This character might not be relatable for everyone; however, as I read the story I understood the self-destrive behaviours he was going through. It was his own grief and no matter what he did he kept spiraling back to stages.

Teracht is the Monster MMC who is just the sweetest bean! Teracht had to leave the monster world before he became food for others. Being that he isn’t a “large” monster by there standards he would of be easy pickings. Teracht has learned his social ques and interactions from movies/shows/internet. I found him to be so soft, sweet, and goofy at times. It would have been amazing to see more of his POV’s.

Spicy

I loved that the spice in this book had so much RANGE! It was great to see the couple exploring different ways to pleasure each other. The use of webs, primal play and toys was 10/10.
This book was the final one in the series, and I will be rereading it as the months go on.

Tropes: Bondage, Dom/Sub, PTSD, Anxiety, Sex toys (Strap On’s and other toys)

Rating: 5/5

Spicy: 4/5

I've been avoiding reading this series bc I really don't like the covers, so so sorry to the artist who I'm sure worked really hard on them but .......lowkey a deterrent. they're clearly a very skilled artist, I just don't love when the characters are illustrated/depicted in detail bc they usually aren't the way I pictured them at all and it's distracting. BUT I realized recently that they're all written by different authors and some I've really liked in the past, so here we are ig

thoughts n feelings:
-spider monster?????? insane choice. but also completely unique so there's that. not sure why the author put so much emphasis on describing his hair though. white and sticking straight up??? it was a choice, that's for sure.
-the discussion of sexual compatibility between two "people" with possibly incompatible anatomy was actually super interesting and cute (strap-on, anyone??), as well as seeing how they communicated to incorporate BDSM into their dynamic even with them both being beginners to it -- that's not something I usually see in stories, often there's one experienced partner and one partner who's new to it and I love that too but I really appreciated how this story went about it
-watching caleb re-learn how to love himself post-accident was lovely -- the subplot with the disability advocacy was a little rushed since the book was so short but a nice addition
-edged into corny at times but that's not overly surprising with this genre

TLDR: have you ever wanted to fuck a spider centaur? no? TOO BAD

“His words made me freeze. Something hot surged inside of me, and I had to swallow. Just imagining Caleb trapped in my webbing, struggling but unable to free himself, made me feel things deep inside of me that I could not name. I had pictured it before, not just him, but with a human in general. Not a prey drive, exactly, but something in me that wanted to feel powerful.”

What an absolutely beautiful hurt|comfort and unique romance. The early chapters of this book had me misting up. Caleb is having such a hard time and no longer sees value in his own life and Teracht is misunderstood and fearful of the outside world: both characters just shadows in this world, not fully living. And it is because of this that they find each other, each saving the other.

It is a very unique romance, Teracht unable to experience sexual pleasure in traditional ways, the two find ways to come together through communication and exploration and it’s pretty steamy in those webs.

I very much enjoyed this final instalment of the Monster Match series and really hope there will be a second act.

This story deals a lot with loss and healing. Caleb was in a car accident and is not only scarred but also lost his dominant hand. Since he was a model, he also lost his job and his sense of identity. When we first meet him, he is still pretty mad at the world and himself. Teracht has left the monster world as he was looking for a safe place. The arachnid monsters aren't ones for close bonds and it's a pretty brutal culture. Teracht has the sweetest heart though and I loved how he gave space for Caleb to deal with his loss while also showing him that he's loveable. In a way, Caleb does the same for Teracht as all Teracht has seen through media is that some of his desires are morally "bad". He is afraid of going out into the world in fear of other people's reactions. These two are incredibly sweet and they are able to comfort each other. I also really enjoyed the soft dom that Teracht grows into and found the spicy scenes very beautifully done.

This was one of my favorites in the series and I'm a bit sad to come to the end. I really enjoyed this world created by many authors!

Cute and Sweet

3.5 stars rounded up.

I really liked the dynamic of these two characters. Their relationship was so sweet and endearing. The story started a little slow and Caleb’s backstory was a little info-dumpy. It also felt super repetitive in the first half. Part of this was because Caleb was struggling with his new life and he kept circling back to the same thoughts and feelings, but the wording was almost the exact same every time. It got redundant fast. There were also some parts that were repeated whenever it switched POVs. Despite that issue, the story overall flowed well.

I like how it incorporated into the Monster Match world, but I wouldn't have minded seeing a little more of the previous characters or seeing the app utilized more. The two main characters were very lovable, though I had a little difficulty accepting Teracht's naiveté regarding some things given how much TV he supposedly consumed. I feel like a lot of those things (such as the concept of homework) would have come up more than once.

Spinning Out of Control - Web of Love

‘Was there a sexy way to scare someone? If there was, that was what I wanted. I wanted him to feel the power I had over him, to know that he was helpless in my web, trapped, my prey, my plaything, unless I felt like letting him go. And I didn’t want to. Just seeing his one wrist bound to my web sent a heat through me that I had not known before.’

Teracht is determined to try to become more social, as all he does is stay in his house and weave his spider webbing for his job with the military. Joining the Monster Match app, he is matched with ex-model Caleb, who, after his devastating accident, chooses to avoid people who would gawk at his burns and missing hand.

Each of these characters are gentle, but broken souls, who need to learn that they can be exactly what the other needs, in Kit Barrie’s delightful contribution to the multi-author Monster Match series.

I really enjoyed this book! I loved Teracht, how he was desperate to learn. Didn't judge Caleb for his bias and chaos in his brain and loved him either way. Caleb was a world famous model, had been all over billboards, fashion magazines etc.. out of the blue he was in a brutal car accident that changed his entire life. Friends he assumed were friends are no longer friends, he feels like everyone sees a monster(because that's what he can see when he looks at himself). There is a LOT of deep feelings in this book. It tackles and discusses alot of mental health.
I loved the kink, I loved the unconventional kink and intercourse. I enjoyed how the characters both worked with their feelings and figured out how to come together while still healing both of their fears. It was amazing and a good way to end the series in my opinion. I hope we get a second season!

Teracht and Caleb’s story is part of the Monster Match series, and readers of previous books will see some familiar refrents, but the romance stands alone and can easily work on its own. I love the sweetness and care at the heart of the connection between the main characters in this story–there’s something deeply fulfilling about the way they’re able to see and appreciate each other for who they are, and that they can bring each other things they aren’t able to get anywhere else just makes everything between them that much better. Points for the creativity of their dynamic as well (see…monster romance) and the way their chemistry is so clearly healing. Overall, one of my favorite installments of the series, with plenty to like.

A beautiful image of love

Teracht and Caleb were so sweet together.
Caleb is dealing with the life altering aftermath of a horrific accident that left him injured and changed completely.
He's still dealing with lots of issues concerning his image because he's a former model and his life is completely different now.
Teracht is a humanoid spider creature who didn't have a very happy or safe existence in the monster realm.
He was considered weaker and didn't want to live that way anymore.
He's very shy leery of leaving his home because he fears humans reactions to his appearance.
I loved that they started as friends and became so much more.
Their explanation into intimacy was very sweet and considerate of each other.
They found ways for them both to be satisfied and it was really beautiful.
They were both so supportive of each other really helped each other to heal.

After Caleb was in an accident that left him badly scarred and his right hand amputated, his whole life was changed. He spent more time inside and didn’t want people to look at him. He found the monster dating app and decided to give it a ago.

Here he met Teracht, a spider monster. Though their first meeting was a little rocky, with Caleb expecting Teracht to think him ugly and being rude to Teracht, they end up having an okay first date, both being open and honest with each other. They explore their new relationship, Teracht having never been in a relationship, let alone with a human, led to lots of touching and exploring by both of them (and figuring out how their anatomy works..)

This was a very sweet and interesting story!
