Yves has a blinding smile for Robin after practices, but never stops to talk.Robin needs to know if Yves’ grin is only joy in the game. Finding out will be Robin’s birthday milestone, but first he needs to give himself the gift of courage. This short story also appears in the Goodreads M/M Romance Group's "Love Has No Boundaries" anthology volume 10.
P.D. Singer lived in Colorado with her slightly bemused husband, one young adult, and seventy-nine pounds of pets. She was a big believer in research, first-hand if possible, so the reader can be quite certain PD skied down a mountain face-first, had been stepped on by rodeo horses, acquired a potato burn or two, and rethought a novel that included sky-diving.
When not writing, playing her fiddle, or walking the sheddiest member of the family, she could be found with a book in hand.
I felt like this story petered out before it began. The MCs meet in the last couple chapters, have an awkward conversation, and get naked. The ending is a weak HFN.
This story sort of fizzled out before it really got going, which is a shame because I was intrigued by the premise.
Basically, we have a guy (Robin) who starts stalking a local Rugby team just so he can perv on the new tight end (Yves). He watches from the sidelines at training and at games until he finally works up the courage to go say something to Yves, and before you know it the two are engaging in a sudden love affair that literally came out of nowhere.
It all moved too fast for me, with zero character or relationship development. Sure, it's a short story, but even then I expected a little more.
Very short 30p) and not for me at all. There was too much Rugby and one of the MCs read like a stalker: a fan who attends all the games of the other MC but they never talk. When they finally do talk it came off weird and the reveal that they had a connection made me roll my eyes.
These LHNB stories really are spoiling me. They are all great and so varied, different and free. A huge thanks to all the wonderful authors.
Robin lets his friend Sebastian drag him to a Rugby game, ok maybe after seeing the picture of the drool worthy demi- god that plays on the team, he wasn't necessarily dragged but rather he ran there and became an avid and devoted fan. He goes to all the practices and home games and looks and admires..Yves..
It's a cute, funny short and ended with me just wanting another chapter or 12. :))
Mmmm …Rugby. Most certainly my game of choice, and why wouldn’t it be? Big strong muscled men in short shorts and tight tops who grapple and tackle each other with passion that’s just …fierce! Bleeding danger and oozing the testosterone of warriors they forego protection in favour of speed and agility. These men are MEN, even with their limbs and arms wrapped around each other, pushing, tugging, grunting and tactile in an orgy of heaving muscle, sweat and determination they are real MEN!
So, are you a fan yet?
J.D Singer will make you a fan, I promise. This little short really highlights all the sexy in Rugby and the bonus is that the author has done her homework. She knows the game and obviously appreciates the aesthetic physicality of the sport too. You get to discover the appeal along with Robin who has just discovered the sport, and with it a certain hotshot player, Mr Tall dark and delicious – Yves Dubois.
Robin’s narration is a sweet and humorous telling of his growing (almost creepy) obsession with Yves and the sport. Insta-lust and a lot of game play talk may put some readers off, but the author does it well, she doesn’t disguise what this is – a short sports romance – and if that means you have to suspend your belief for just a short while to fully appreciate it, so what. This is fun, it’s sexy and I thought the characters were well developed for such a short. I was rooting for the somewhat shy Robin to just go for it. I felt slighted light headed when Yves is described making a play or swallowing a sports drink, or throwing a grin, or just, breathing …the man is sex on long muscled legs girls and boys!
There’s a nice little twist and I was left wanting more of their story. The author did a great job with this one and if you are a sports fan I suggest you check out her backlist. Even if you aren’t, give it a go, it’s a fab freebie and a great little in between snack. You may even find yourself invested in a new sport, solely for the love of the game I’m sure … ;)
Well it's a quick read, OK, has personality though little but looks from Yves. Wouldn't rate as high from this read. ........
Watching Rugby has never sounded more appealing and scorching hot! and my general reaction to any sport is glazed eyes, a yawn and grab for the kindle.
Robin's personality shines through the narration; sweet, quirky and engaging. There's enough of Yves to suggest he's a nice guy as well as being smoking hot. The little we saw of Sebastian had me wanting more.
It's a short story that doesn't try to be more than it is, so insta-lust but very nicely done. No deep drawn out backgrounds, just enough told through banter to give a feel for the characters. The writing is smooth and carries you along. Predictable but there's no harm in that. It's light-hearted and great fun.
Very enjoyable read, my only issue is a familiar one - it ends too soon, I want more damnit; I want to read of Robin meeting the team, to see Sebastian's knowing smirk when they tell him, to hear more of Robin's past adventures, to stand with Yves at the finishing line and see him drool over Robin's athleticism. I want more chance to drool over them myself, a chance to see them as a couple...
It ends on a good note, they're starting a relationship strongly, openly, proudly. That should be enough but at the same time I felt I'd just settled down with these characters and the pub door has slammed in my face *pout* - the problem is it's too good ;)
Should Singer decide to write more *hint-hint* it'd be an auto-buy.
Rugby. Men in tight shorts getting muddy and grappling in a group--'nuff said!
Robin's adorable and sweet fascination with a new sport his friend dragged him to--well the flyer advertising the new star player Yves helped--leads to some cute stalking.
Fun and sweet and the twist just made me smile! Maybe a little heavy on the sport side and it kind of ended where it should have gotten interesting but at least there was no heavy-angst and drama(which I dislike).
Robin saw rugby-god Yves, and is immediately smitten. He follows Yves' career obsessively, never actually talking to him, until Robin attends a game on his birthday. He meets Yves after the game, and it seems Yves is just as enthralled with him. Insta-love, boring rugby talk and a totally impropable setup later, we have a book that did not totally deliver.
LOL! Robin is adorable and I totally relate to his journey. No, I didn't turn out to be a ginormous Hockey fan (nor did I manage to land a player) but I will admit that I only started watching matches because 1) Hockey Butt and 2) watching those goal-tenders stretch. The awesome fights were just a wonderful bonus. Also, goalies' superstitious rituals as they scuff the crease are fascinating.
I loved that this wasn't insta-love; that it ended on a solid HFN. While it left me wanting more, it was a great, realistic way to wrap up a short-story.
My only complaint was all the rugby terms & descriptions. I definitely felt lost and kind of skimmed those passages a bit since I couldn't really picture the action accurately. Maybe after I've seen a few games I will give Scrum a re-read as I'll no doubt appreciate it more, then.
A nice short. I liked Robin, he is a good MC, funny, quirky, a bit sarcastic and with a nice hint of self-irony.
Now - for me there was a bit too much Rugby...I started skipping the sport parts. But that is just me. And I'm kind of bummed, it ended at a point where I had expected to see a bit more, like the team's reaction, Robin running his race, Sebastian's "told you so". These parts are missing for me. Sure, it's the authors decision to not write them but there had been a built up to them.
And I really stumbled over the fact that Yves acted like he knew nothing about Robin, for example that Robin would run that race the next week-end, and then suddenly said he could drive with Sebastian, which means he knew all along but acted towards Robin like he didn't. Not funny.
This sounds like I didn't like it, which is not true. I really liked it, Robin is a great guy, worth getting to know. Read it.
Well this was a smitten story for me and I do love books like that but what I found with this was there was so much information about rugby and that was a nice touch because I've learned some stuff, but what was a downer was the fact that just over half was full of it and it kinda bored me because when you read a short story you expect a little build up then BOOOOOOM jackpot baby!!! But it was like reading a little self help guild to rugby and then near the end is where it picked up and I was thinking OK now were getting somewhere gonna see what happens and how they go even for a little bit because lets face it when it comes to short books you don't really get a lot but you do get the whole plot but then blammm turned the page and The End pops up!!! I was not happy.... I was expecting much much more and there could of been something really nice about this......if it was longer....
I think this is my first official story featuring Rugby (which I’ve never watched IRL either) and that was more or less the highlight of the story for me. With the short length, it was hard to get to know either character very well, but regardless, still enjoyed this one and appreciate the contribution to the LHNB event!
2nd reading: Not sure how it happened (well, technically not true – I was in search of a book with a Y character name and saw this on a list), but I ended up reading this book again. Ironically, I didn’t realize I had read it until after I was done and starting to write this review. That means the book wasn’t one that stuck with me, but it was a pleasant way to spend a short while on a lazy Saturday.
Robin doesn't know rugby but he sees Yves play during a local game and he's hooked...on the game. ;) Robin makes it his business to attend as many practices and games as he can so he can enjoy the scenery and maybe get up the guts to see if Yves would be interested in going out. This sounds more stalker-y than it is, I found it kind of sweet. I thought the rugby team's perception of Robin was a nice twist and I liked Yves when we finally got to meet him. I liked this one.
I'm not quite sure how to describe my feelings about this other than to say that it was good, but certainly not great. That being said, that's a completely subjective view, and someone who is really into rugby may enjoy this much more than I did. It just missed a certain mark for me.
4.5 stars--What a fun, very short read. Lots of rugby background/info--that felt like a little too much at times. Still, it left me with a desire to watch a game to two! No angst, but some nice humor and a bit of steam. Very enjoyable!
Oh what a great little gem this was! I got this as a freebie from Amazon and as it's a short story I managed to squeeze it between reads, I loved it there was plenty of funny remarks and the dialogues were engaging, I particularly enjoyed the surprise twist at the end and the characters.
A short story of 37 pages free on Amazon... Robin was invited to a ruby game were he fell in lust with a new recruit. Yves was new to the team from Canada. Robin gets his wish for his 30th birthday. This includes a great twist to adorable characters. HFN ending
The rugby rules and vocabulary had me sightly overwhelmed at the first half of this, but I could have handled some additional pages to this nice short read!
There were only three characters in the book. Robin is a new fan of rugby, Sebastian is his best friend and Yves a star player. There was a lot of indecision and fear on the part of Robin but, in the end, all went well. There wasn't much more to the book. There were hints of backgrounds but for a story of this length there wasn't room for more. Would be nice, easy beach reading.
Robin and Yves meet when Robin keeps watching Yves play football in secret, or so he thinks. Yves knows Robin is watching him he stops to talk to him when he finishes a game. Read the short book if you like your books short and to the point!
