The Accidental Love #3

An Accidental Proposal

Rate this book
Miss Elizabeth Bennet isn't the only one with an embarrassing family . . .

Elizabeth is poised to decline the second proposal of marriage she has entertained in the past five months. That is, until she is interrupted by Mr. Darcy's cousins. The resulting accident ends with a second proposal--but it's not Mr. Darcy's.

Darcy knows he's had a near escape. He's determined to change Miss Elizabeth's opinion of him, but to do so, he will have to change himself. In the process, family secrets are laid bare, prejudices are questioned, and pride--well, he may always be a little proud. He’s a Darcy, after all.

Now—how to convince Elizabeth to become one, too?

An Accidental Proposal is the third standalone novella in the Accidental Love Series. If you enjoy funny stories with smitten heroes, clever heroines, and more than a dash of romance in the regency world of Pride and Prejudice, this is the series for you.

This story just did not keep my interest as others have.

As the author's blurb tells us, Darcy is in the process of proposing at Hunsford when he is interrupted by his two cousins. And an accident has one lady found in the arms of...not Darcy...but Fitzwilliam, his cousin.

So this story gives us some background about Anne de Bourgh and we here read of a changed personality for her with the support of Elizabeth. Anne also defies her mother, who, of course, expected Darcy to propose.

Darcy is allowed to court Elizabeth as she never did get around to giving him an answer. And she learns much in seeing his interactions with the tenants, etc. at Rosings. Elizabeth also learns the truth about Wickham and realizes that much of her opinion about Darcy has been in error.

Charlotte makes few appearances while her husband, Collins, is mostly absent in these pages.

There is an epilogue and a link to an additional epilogue if you sign up for the author's news letter.

Charming Novella
The opening paragraphs of this charming novella have Elizabeth contemplating a more temperate reply to Darcy’s proposal. Just as she is about to give her answer, they are abruptly interrupted by Colonel Richard Fitzwilliam with Anne de Bourgh arriving shortly on his heels. Then, a sequence of mishaps, including one intentional push by the Colonel, leads to an accidental proposal. Lady Catherine is most seriously displeased—she does not like Richard. That shove also saved Darcy from a refusal and affords him a second chance at winning Elizabeth’s hand.

What I adore about this book, the third in the Accidental Love Series, is Melanie Rachel’s skillful use of engaging dialogue—everybody speaks to one another! She is an author who excels in this. The truthful and candid conversations between Darcy and Elizabeth resolve issues of their past pretty quickly, and I loved how their new courtship developed with much more communication and understanding. Those between Richard and Darcy reveal the former’s reservations about his sudden engagement, as well as his uncertainty about his ability to properly manage an estate. A genuine friendship between Anne and Elizabeth is also warmly developed.

Can an overheard conversation and a misunderstanding thwart the two couples’ path to happiness?

A long-held secret surrounding an event which took place one summer at Pemberley involving Anne must also be revealed. All this and a clever and unique comeuppance for Wickham at the end rounds out the story quite nicely.

I have been enjoying this stand-alone novella series very much, and highly recommend it. Melanie Rachel is always a joy to read. Don’t forget to grab the delightful bonus epilogue by joining her newsletter.

I received an arc of this book from the author via BookFunnel and am voluntarily providing a review. I also purchased the published version for my Kindle library.

SPOILER ALERT: This review may contain *** SPOILERS ***

>>Rating: clean of sexual content, a near abduction and certain discussions pushed it into a mature teen

>>Timeline: Springtime in Kent
>>Source: purchased: Book 3 in the Accidental Love Series [can be read in any order]

Book 1: An Accidental Holiday
Book 2: An Accidental Scandal
Book 3: An Accidental Proposal
Book 4: An Accidental Meeting

When Darcy and his Fitzwilliam cousins get together, you have to know there will be mischief and mayhem. Anne de Bourgh was a surprise and she took no guff from her male cousins Darcy and Fitzwilliam. The dynamics were a bit different in the de Bourgh family. I was intrigued that this worked so well. I’ll not reveal that but the relationship between Lady Catherine and Anne was a surprise. I was pleased to see it.

There was a secret that was being kept from Lady Catherine that made me shudder. I was horrified that a certain SBRB was even still alive. George Darcy has a lot to answer for in his next life. Seriously, that man created a monster to ravage and torment his family long after he was dead and gone. He never knew what a degenerate creature he had created in his godson. He considered every word from that SBRB’s mouth was truth and no one could tell him differently. He believed his godson over everyone. That was unconscionable. However, that was only a small part of this story. I was mad and only meant to mention it briefly.

Timeline: Spring: Elizabeth’s visit to her friend in Hunsford, Kent. Mr. and Mrs. Collins welcomed their cousin to the parsonage never knowing the mischief that would soon befall them. Anne de Bourgh had an agenda and she decided that Miss Elizabeth was just the person to help her. Yes, that fearless girl from the country was what Anne needed to boost her confidence to achieve her goal.

Certain misconceptions would be revealed and clarified during Elizabeth’s visit. She would learn many things. Anne was not how she appeared. The Colonel would be a source of information that was upsetting. Elizabeth now knew what those looks and stares from Darcy meant. She had no clue that a certain glib-tongued militia officer was, in fact, a scoundrel. Lady Catherine wasn’t so bad after all. Mr. Darcy wasn’t so bad, either. In fact, Elizabeth discovered that she sorta, kinda, maybe, liked him. Oh, the detritus hit the fan then. They would all have to face the dragon… Lady Catherine. What fun.

DNF at 51% (Kindle Paperwhite)

It sadly didn't held my interest and finally decided to DNF. Maybe someday I'll pick it back up, who knows..

It is well written, like all books by Melanie Rachel.
But as I said, didn't held my interest.. Tastes differ I would say. It still doesn't mean you, dear Readers shouldn't give it a try.

Loved it!

Darcy has his Hunsford moment, but before Elizabeth can respond, Col. F bursts in and the trajectory of ODC and another goes on a rollercoaster ride!

While ODC's journey to mutual true love has everything we could ask for- following a hiccup of a beginning, I was more struck by the depths found in both Anne and Lady C. There is difficult backstory there which slowly gets revealed. These Rosings women have so much more to them than meets the eye.

Everyone goes through a process and growth spurt, but we are most privy to Elizabeth's process and thoughts.

This all takes place at Hunsford, in the matter of a mere few weeks, but we (thankfully) get very little Collins. Even Charlotte is minimally present.

This is the third in Melanie Rachel Accidental series and I think this one is my favorite! This isn't just a romp of love and clever dialog, I appreciate the deeper elements found in the characters and the plot.

I loved it and highly recommend this book!

4.5*

A very well written short novella with a tidy cast and lots of delicious dialogue. The excellent us of dialogue really is the true strength of this author and is why I come back to her work again and again.

The story has good links to Pride and Prejudice itself in that this is more about the development of character and self awareness in the two young women rather than just about the romance. This is a real strength of this book for me.

There was one little point that kept niggling at the back of my mind which resulted in the deducted 0.5*

Lizzie is a little less hothead and Darcy is a little bit less depressive.

The Rosing proposal goes a little different and there are two proposals instead of one. Funny in places, not much angst and the characters seemed real. I love it.

The real bad guys are once again Mr. Bennet and Darcy’s father. Wickham, who deserves to have a wooden stake pounded through his heart, is treated with kid gloves. Too much forgiveness and not enough avenging.

I enjoyed the other novellas in this series, so I was looking forward to this new story. Rachel did not disappoint. The accidental proposal is not between Elizabeth and Darcy, but we get plenty of time spent with our favorite characters as the story is told from both their perspectives. I liked this take on Lady Catherine and Anne, as well as the relationship between Anne, Darcy, and Fitzwilliam. I also liked that Elizabeth is more thoughtful and measured in her response to Darcy's Hunsford proposal, but she's still our witty and impertinent Lizzy. There's an epilogue at the end of the story, plus a bonus epilogue if you sign up for Rachel's newsletter. In my opinion, signing up for the bonus epilogue was worth it. (Plus, you'll be in the know for upcoming works.) I read this on Kindle Unlimited and enjoyed it so much, I will purchase a copy to add to my Kindle library.

Clean romance. A retelling/fan fiction of the tail end of Austin’s Pride and Prejudice. a cute and funny story.
This starts at Kent when Mr. Darcy has just proposed to Miss Elizabeth Bennet, but an interruption or two happens before she can answer his question. He comes to find out he has said and done some things that cause her to think poorly of his manners. She comes to find out she also is to blame with her overly quick character judgements.

I quite enjoyed this novella! It switches back and forth between Elizabeth and Darcy's points of view, so you get to hear some of their inner dialogue (but it isn't one with drawn out agony to suffer through). Lady Catherine and Anne have a slightly different relationship than in most variations. I enjoyed Anne's spirit in this novella and the way all the cousins interact with each other. Elizabeth is a bit more cool headed than she is often portrayed. There is an epilogue in the story as well as a link to a bonus epilogue within the book so you can read even more. I prefer not to have things separate, but I will take as much story as I can get. The bonus epilogue is sweet and not depressing as they sometimes some can be.

RATING: 4.5 (Rounded up)

My Austen alcove book shelf is packed with novels from many different authors, but one of my recent favorites is Melanie Rachel. Whenever Rachel puts out a new Pride and Prejudice variation, I always jump quickly to get it because I know that it will be entertaining, full of emotion and still capture the essence of what made me fall in love with Austen's original master piece.

I have thoroughly enjoyed all the other short stories in Rachel's The Accidental Love series and needless to say with An Accidental Proposal, she delivers once again! In her latest story, Rachel has given us a sweet tale that considers what could have been if Darcy and Elizabeth were unexpectedly interrupted during his disastrous first proposal. This unplanned interruption gives Darcy an opportunity to realize, with no small amount of horror and shame, that he had been wrong in assuming his affections were reciprocated and that his suit would definitely not have been accepted. With an opportunity at a second chance, Darcy puts all of his efforts into courting Elizabeth properly with the sole aim of winning her heart and proving that he is a man worthy of her.

Having an opportunity to see what courting between our favorite couple could have been like made this Austen fan girl super happy. Rachel fills Darcy and Elizabeth's interactions with plenty of teasing, flirting and sweetness, as Darcy proves himself to be a suitor who has paid attention to who Elizabeth is and what she wants. I so appreciated the patience he displayed in waiting for Elizabeth's heart to catch up with his. Of course, given their history, Darcy and Elizabeth's journey to a better understanding and a deeper love is not without its challenges and Rachel does not shy away from some of the more painful topics that the couple must confront about each other and about themselves.

However, probably the most pleasant part of this read is how Rachel weaves in the characters of Anne de Bourgh and Colonel Richard Fitzwilliam. I loved the dynamic between the trio of cousins and the depth of care and support they share with one another. It provides even more depth to Darcy's character and upbringing. Anne and Richard's parallel story is just as fun and charming as what is happening between Elizabeth and Darcy and I thoroughly enjoyed having the opportunity to get to know them better.

For any Austenesque reader who is looking for a delightful variation that packs a lot of emotion in a quick read, I definitely recommend picking up Melanie Rachel's latest story. I can't wait for the next novella in the series, coming out later this summer!

Wonderful

The story opens after Darcy has finished his disastrous proposal to Elizabeth at Hunsford parsonage. This Elizabeth is a bit more introspective and slower to react, the reason being that not only Charlotte Collins, but also Anne Debourgh have both told her that Darcy admired her greatly. Therefore, although Elizabeth is still shocked by the unexpected and unwanted proposal, she's a tiny bit more thoughtful about wanting to refuse him in a tactful way. However, she never gets the chance for her response because they're interrupted by first Colonel Fitzwilliam, then Anne Debourgh, then Mr and Mrs Collins. Mayhem ensues, but Darcy learns some hard truths, and realizes that he dodged a bullet, and was saved from a painful refusal. Thus, he's given a chance to court Elizabeth and improve her opinion of him.

This tale takes place completely during Elizabeth's visit to Hunsford and Rosings. The romance is enhanced by the almost complete lack of villains and annoyances. No Bennetts or Bingleys. Wickham is just a figure from past troubles. This is a swoon worthy Darcy, and Elizabeth doesn't stand a chance when faced with so much devotion and determination. But ODC are not the only ones. The accidental proposal of the title is actually between the Colonel and Anne, and their story is significant and lovely.

I love this author. She's an automatic purchase for me. The book is well written and well edited. I recommend it highly for a romantic and pleasant way to pass some time.

What i love about Ms. Rachel's work is that the characters communicate. it doesn't mean their are no misunderstandings but one or both people involved make sure to talk it out at the earliest opportunity and clear the sir.

The Accidental proposal is not between the ODC but Darcy does have his Hunsford moment and before Elizabeth can respond, his two cousins interrupt which provides a lifeline to Darcy who realises he was completely mistaken and E doesn't desire his proposal. The attention moves to Anne and Colonel F and the ODC couple gets time to get to know one another. Anne is very cleaver to create opportunities for the ODC to spend time with each other and to make E understand how Darcy is valued by people of Rosings and nearly everyone they meet

the background of Anne is explained and the misunderstandings between two couples are solved.

Loved how Colonel F, Anne De Bourge and Lady Catherine are portrayed in this book. We get to see a softer side to Lady C and understand why Darcy puts up with her. the story is completely set in kent and we just hear about other characters. Charlotte handles the situation at the parsonage well and mr. collins is not much present in book.

what i most loved about is the epilogue. The way Wickham gets his comeuppance is innovative and hilarious. this is the first time i read something like that and i enjoyed it as much as Darcy and Richard. Wonderful book in the accidental series

This story begins in Hunsford at the point when Darcy is proposing to Elizabeth. Then, it is interrupted by Colonel Fitzwilliam and Anne. What comes next is a comedy of errors which ends in another proposal of marriage. This proposal does not include Darcy or Elizabeth.

Darcy is given a reprieve from Elizabeth’s refusal. Colonel Fitzwilliam’s timely intervention helps Darcy. He tells Darcy the truth which causes Darcy’s pride to be hurt. Anne comes and berates Colonel Fitzwilliam for interrupting Darcy’s proposal. Richard and Anne both want what is best for Darcy and Elizabeth. All three cousins reveal family secrets to Elizabeth. Unfortunately, each holds a piece that the other two are unaware of. Can the misunderstandings from these secrets be revealed?

Darcy now has time to speak to Elizabeth about what would have been her reasons for refusing him. Will she believe him? Will she give him another chance? Will she come to love him and accept his proposal?

These questions are answered in this novella. I loved Darcy. He is swoon-worthy and romantic. Elizabeth has some truths to face about herself and her family before she can commit to another.

This can be read in the afternoon with a cup of tea.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This book picks up when Elizabeth is in Kent, just before Elizabeth answers Mr Darcy's proposal.

The story differs from canon in a few ways. In this version, prior to Darcy's proposal, Anne deBourgh has been building a friendship with Elizabeth, and trying to convince her that Darcy is both a good man, and is in love with her. This means that Elizabeth doesn't receive the proposal completely unprepared. She is planning to refuse, but she wasn't going to be rude about it.

Her answer is never given; however, as she it is interrupted by the arrival first of Colonel Fitzwilliam, and then Anne herself. In the midst of the chaos, Richard accidentally proposes to Anne, and she accepts. The story flows from there. Darcy courts Lizzy, Fitzwilliam and Anne have to come to terms with their new relationship.

Overall a good deal of this story is told to us by the characters, rather than shown. All the story is set in Kent, and we get HEA endings for ODC and a few other couples. The main characters are the four mentioned. Bingley and Jane are referred to off page, Wickham only appears on page in the epilogue. Lady Catherine, Mr Collins, and Charlotte have small roles in the story. This was a quick, easy read, without much tension.

I loved it!

It was so enticing that I couldn’t put it down, this book grabbed my interest from the very first page. I couldn’t put it down, I had to know what happened next. The story is well written with a very good storyline. You will see the most beloved characters in a whole new way. This is a Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice variation. This is the third standalone novella in the Accidental Love Series. If you enjoy funny stories with smitten heroes, clever heroines, and more than a dash of romance in the regency world of Pride and Prejudice, this is the series for you. Miss Elizabeth Bennet isn't the only one with an embarrassing family. Elizabeth is poised to decline the second proposal of marriage she has entertained in the past five months. That is, until she is interrupted by Mr. Darcy's cousins. The resulting accident ends with a second proposal, but it's not Mr. Darcy's. Darcy knows he's had a near escape. He's determined to change Miss Elizabeth's opinion of him, but to do so, he will have to change himself. In the process, family secrets are laid bare, prejudices are questioned, and pride, well, he may always be a little proud. He’s a Darcy, after all. Now, how to convince Elizabeth to become one, too? So with all that and more this story pulls you in and holds you tight. I highly recommend to everyone.

Adorably humorous and amorous variation

Variations which are brief enough for a quick read, like this one, is always a plus for readers who are pressed for time but still seeking for a worthwhile read. Thus, this is highly recommended.

Moreover, this is remarkable for the clever and homorous exchanges and situations the P&P characters find themsleves in.

The title may not refer to our beloved couple but it led to their understanding each other earlier than Canon. It is admirable how Elizabeth Bennet is willing to see Mr. Darcy at a more positive and better light; all because of rhetoric interference of his cousin Miss Anne DeBourgh, who has so much oersonality and deprh in this one.

Mr. Darcy is likewise more alluring and lovable for his steadfast and persistent pursuit of the woman, who he knows is the only choice for him as life partner and wife.

This reader definitely enjoyed this novella, for the author’s effort in making serious issues light, and for the laughs many scenes in the story offered, without diminishing the romantic aspect of it.

Very interesting accident……

Well, there was an accidental proposal and an almost proposal to begin the story. This reader snickered at least once in every chapter. I also appreciated the way the author essentially assumed readers were familiar with the original P&P to enhance appreciation for the context of “off-stage” incidents, but also provided a very brief explanation for those who were not familiar with the original.

The resolution of the various couples was very well done. I especially enjoyed Anne’s personality and her relationship with Elizabeth. I laughed out loud at Wickham’s fate.

Needless to say, this will become the a favorite short story for an afternoon when I need to read something positive. Very highly recommended.

An Accidental Proposal by Melanie Rachel is another wonderful novella by this author that I highly recommend. Besides the developing love between Darcy and Elizabeth, the author weaves a lovely story about cousinly love. The books starts in the middle of Darcy’s proposal at Hunsford which is interrupted by Richard Fitzwilliam, who is soon followed by Anne de Bourgh. I loved the humor and relationships between the characters, along with the Epilogue where our favorite scoundrel learns about cousinly revenge. This is a well-written, enjoyable book, and I look forward to future books from this author.

Like the rest of the Accidental series, this is a lovely bit of brain candy with little conflict and lots of cuteness. Reading it with a cup of tea was a very nice way to spend an an afternoon. And it was a wonderful novelty to have Anne de Bourgh bee an actual character and not just a sickly potted plant. And for spoiler reasons Lady Catherine also gets a sympathetic painting, with good reasons why she is so overprotective of Anne. A couple relationships and plot threads felt rushed, and I thought a novel rather than a novella might have given us enough time to explore everything, but this was a lovely read overall and I ate it up in a day or two.

Anne de Bourgh and the Colonel interrupt Darcy's proposal before he can be properly rejected. There's another proposal in the confusion and Darcy gets to suspend the pleasure of hearing Elizabeth's answer until such time that she would agree. It was a nice, well-edited, often amusing quick read that sometimes feels like some scene was cut. The characters refer to conversations that I don't think they had on the page and I got a bit pulled away from the story, going back and trying to figure out if I had missed something.

I love the book description for this short, sweet read, Melanie Rachel's An Accidental Proposal, as it completely sets up what we can expect. There are some sweet banter and very funny dialogs to keep the reader entertained. I loved the author's work with these characters. Anne de Bourgh is wonderful, and I thoroughly enjoyed her friendship with Elizabeth. Actually, all of the characters were fun to read in this light, no-angst tale. And my favorite part is Wickham's just desserts. Very enjoyable!

short and sweet

Loved this Hu score based story. Anne dB’s character is unique and it’s such a pleasure to see her bloom in this version. Lady dB is always a forceful character but here you see her love for her daughter shine through. ODB blunders through his proposal, his cousins come to rescue him and chaos ensues. I especially loved the outcome for Wickham so well-deserved.

This was another great story by Melanie Rachel. There’s just something about her writing that I really enjoy.
This story has some really wonderful moments between Darcy and Elizabeth and also with colonel Fitzwilliam and Anne de Bourgh. I especially loved how lively Anne was in this one.

I do wish it had been a bit longer, since it felt a bit compressed and rushed for time towards the end. But generally a great read and a good editions the the accidental series

This apply titled story starts during the proposal at Hunsford, which then goes a bit off schedule. Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy are caught in a moment by Richard Fitzwilliam and Anne de Bourgh. The plot moves quickly from there! Lots of long kept secrets, communication, learning what is important, and more communication lead to a few happily ever after.

As always, I enjoy this author's ability to mix light humor with the romantic. It was a joy to read.

Darcy's proposal at Hunsford is interrupted by a disheveled and frantic Colonel Fitzwilliam, followed by a desperate and breathless Anne de Bourgh. Nothing goes as planned. A delightful romp, as both Darcy and Elizabeth examine their mistaken impressions. Darcy is vulnerable and sweet in this one. Elizabeth learns to temper her reactions. Lady Catherine is involved in a very satisfying surprise at the end. Loved it! Melanie Rachel never disappoints.

Not quite her usual standard

The ratio of talk to action seemed a bit out of balance, particularly as the content of conversations often seemed a little too contrived and fortuitously revelatory, solving misunderstandings to the point that seemed not simply unlikely, but too easy. Between such conversation and (perhaps an overuse of) free indirect discourse to lay bare the protagonists' thoughts, I struggled to maintain engagement.

very enjoyable read

I have been on a Jane Austen Fan fiction kick (JAFF) as it is called and I’m enjoying it very much in fact I am scarfing them down. It’s my comfort read these days. It’s interesting how many different permutations there are of the P& P story depending on the author, I’m busy enjoying as many of them as I can get my hands on. Luckily Kindle Unlimited has many to choose from.
