A DEAD WOMAN IS FOUND FLOATING IN A POOL.Defense attorney Mitch Turner’s newest client, Gilbert Claybourne, is the nicest guy, at least according to everybody Gilbert works with. They all assure Mitch that Gilbert is innocent and that there is no way Gilbert could’ve murdered his fellow employee, Sheena Tillman.
But Mitch has his reservations, and his concerns only grow the further he gets into his investigation. It’s apparent from their first meeting that Gilbert has a connection to Sheena that he’s anxious to keep hidden.
TOO MANY SECRETS.The more Mitch learns about Gilbert Claybourne, Sheena Tillman, and everybody working with the two of them, the more convinced Mitch becomes that everyone is harboring a secret. Some of what’s hidden seems relevant. Some not. The deeper he digs, and the more he uncovers, it becomes difficult to say what’s true. And it doesn’t help that the victim left a trail of enemies in her wake.
CAN MITCH LEARN THE TRUTH BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE?Mitch pushes forward to the trial without a clear picture of what happened, ever doubtful of his seemingly innocent client while looking into everything he can, hoping to discover the truth before the jury renders their verdict. The trial is an uphill climb because the deck is stacked against him, and even the judge seems to be rooting for the prosecution.
Can Mitch discover the truth in time to see that justice is served? Before his client is sent away for a crime he might not have committed?
I studied the man a moment longer before nodding. “Just for the record, I’m not your attorney. Not yet, at any rate. But attorney-client confidentiality has attached, so you can feel free to speak with me. I have questions, but how about you start?”
As much as I would’ve preferred to have my initial conversation elsewhere, I had to understand what was happening. I needed enough information to make an educated decision about my potential client.
“You’re sure our discussion is confidential?” Gilbert glanced at the mirror and seemed uncomfortable.
“Yes, even if I decide not to take the case.”
“What if somebody’s on the other side of that mirror?”
“If there’s information you’re afraid of the cops overhearing, you can wait to tell me in private, assuming you get out on bond and I sign you as a client.”
Gilbert nodded as he licked his lips. “I’ve been set up.”
I just waited.
He acted like this was a revelation, but I wasn’t surprised based on what I’d learned from his mother.
I’d also heard this hundreds of times, and it had only proven true in a handful. My clients always claimed to be innocent, and I believed them until I didn’t. I figured that was part of the duty I owed them rather than dismissing their claim and treating them like they were guilty, even though I knew most were.
Gilbert hesitated. “You’ve developed a reputation, Mr. Turner, for helping people out, especially those who are innocent. I just want you to know right up front I didn’t do this. I’ll swear to it if you put my hand on the Bible.
Dan Decker lives in Utah with his family. He has a law degree and spends as much time as he can outdoors. You can learn more about upcoming novels at dandeckerbooks.com.
I liked everything but the ending. I didn’t like Barbara one bit. I thought he deserved better than her. All she did was jerked him around. And she lying, she’s not going to be able to deal with his job because Mitch is committed and loyal to his job and clients. She will not be his 1st priority no matter how hard he tries to do it. I was really absorbed with this storyline even though I predict the perp, but the story was different. Mitch and Winston are my favorites. I love how they work together. Winston is a win-win for the team. Mitch is not bad himself doing investigative work. Man, Sheena was favor of the month for quite a few men in the same company. That judge was pure evil 😈. Overall, storyline was interesting. I just wonder about what happened to the company and those people job.
Dan Decker spins a tale almost too maniacal not to be true. Criminals come in all shapes, sizes but master manipulators rarely get caught in their own lies. Mitch Turner is a great defense lawyer and a powerful force for justice. His job is to exonerate and zealously defend his clients. It is an underrated but integral cog in the wheels of justice because most people see them as trying to let the guilty go free. Defending the innocent is hard work. Especially when the opposition is withholding key information.
This novel can easily be read as a stand alone tale with the benefits of following a storyline through a series of books that help breathe life into the development of the main characters.
This is difficult for me to review because I really like the character Mitch Turner and I like the story, however, the writing style is not for me. Mitch's interviews go on forever and begin to ruin the flow of the story. I have read all five books and this has been the same since the beginning. The questions just go on and on until I end skimming or skipping them. Also, I was disappointed in the very last few sentences of the story. Crazy part is I will probably buy the next one, because like I said, I like the character.
Another one that wouldn’t let me put this book down!
I have really enjoyed the Mitch Turner series. I hope there will be more to come. The characters are so developed you feel like you know them and you wait for the story to unfold just as if you’re watching a movie or sitting there in the courtroom. There’s always an element of surprise and you keep cheering for Mitch & Winston to get to the truth! One of these books will be a movie one day. Maybe all of them will be or an ongoing TV series.
The latest installment in the Mitch Turner series was awesome, Turner still reeling from being ambushed and then betrayed by his girlfriend takes on a new client. This client lives in the suburbs of Chicago and is accused of murdering a coworker. Turner is worried about the client withholding vital information and the hostility from the judge. Great storyline
This book was entertaining but not res lipstick at all. In all of the books, it appears that Turner can’t solve the case until the trial is almost over. In this book, the ending when Turner burst into the interrogation room, was so out of the ordinary a realistic person would never believe it. Also, Turner has a real ego problem. Otherwise it was ok!
I don't think Decker could write a bad book!!!! I've sat in my chair for almost the last 4 hrs STRAIGHT reading this!! His books are page-turners!!! If you like legal thrillers and ironic endings he's your man. You won't be disappointed if you read Dan Decker book.
I love 💕 love , the Mitch Turner ,defense attorney books !! But the other books fall short for me. JMO. They don’t compare. That being said I highly recommend reading the Mitch Turner defense attorney series. Best read in order. If you like mystery and court drama you will love there books. I would go as far as to say they are six plus stars
I love this series and Dan Decker always delivers. Mitch is one of those loveable characters that you can't help but root for all the time. He has his adversities as ever, but he always manages to get to the bottom of it. You always know that something is going to happen during court, after all the investigation is always ongoing in this series. Another great one for this series.
I was captivated by the end of the first chapter and never stopped until I was done. I'll admit, this book might be my favorite of the series. Mitch Turner does it again. A truly good story with bad and good parts. Well-developed characters with history makes the story even more compelling. Definitely 5 stars and a great book.
Held my interest. Great Surprise ending in all his books in this series. Clean book with no bad language or sexual encounters, which never adds to the story, though out all his books in this series.
Money couldn't save Westbrook. Mitch continued to fight like a bulldog and was not giving up on his client knowing he had a biased judge who turned out to be crooked. Very cool read
A genius at creating a story that always ends with the unexpected. And a text about the law and the psychology of…a lawyer of a stripe including self- doubt and uncertainty in relationships. A revelation of Self? Great stuff!
Yet again, another page turner that kept me riveted as they worked out the facts. A great read but down 1 star because Mitch got back with Barbara and he deserves someone less fickle, sorry Dan Decker.
I would have given this a five star (the story line is good and the twists keep coming) but I dropped a star because I don’t like Barbara . Maybe it should still be five because that’s a sign that the author wrote well enoug to make me dislike her.
I think this was one of the best of the Mitch Turner series. Lots of characters and intrigue - kept you guessing till the end. Would have liked to hear Makenna’s side of the story at the end.
From start to finish this book had all of the ways to keep me reading non stop. The complex plot, mind blowing trial and judge. Mitch Turner is amazing.
