Here's a bit about him...
James Sutherland was born in Stoke-on-Trent, England, many, many, many years ago. So long ago, in fact, that he can't remember a single thing about it. The son of a musician, he moved around lots as a youngster, attending schools in the Isle of Man and Spain before returning to Stoke where he lurked until the age of 18. After going on to gain a French degree at Bangor University, North Wales, he toiled at a variety of regular office jobs before making a daring escape through a fire exit in order to concentrate on writing silly nonsense full-time. Happily married, James lives with his wife and daughter in a small but perfectly formed market town in Staffordshire. In his spare time, James enjoys playing his guitar, reading history books, and discussing the deep, philosophical mysteries of life with his goldfish, Tiffany.

Welcome to life on Finbar's Farm with Norbert, a 27 year old, fat horse, Delilah a pretty young pony, Colin an old, out of shape cuckoo, Farmer Finbar, Mrs Muckleton and Joe Baxter. You can read my individual reviews on each book but this will give you a quick overview.
Book 1: Norbert
Norbert looks in his trough one morning and is immediately scared by the reflection he sees thinking that it is another horse looking at him. He doesn't have the best of memories but does recall his friend Colin, the cuckoo, telling him that it is indeed only his reflection. Norbert tries to be brave and so 'grins' into the water. Imagine his shock when he discovers his teeth are green!
He runs back to Colin in a panic demanding that Colin do something to help him clean his teeth so that Delilah, the young filly, in the next field will take more notice of him.
What follows are the hilarious antics of Colin going to the farm house to retrieve the required "goods" (toohpaste and tootbrush) from Farmer Finbar's bathroom.
Book 2: Norbert's Summer Holiday
It is now July and Norbert gets let in on a secret by his friend Colin, who tells him that he going on holiday to the French Riviera. Norbert just happens to tell a grasshopper who then proceeds to tell all the animals in a ten mile radius. Next morning, instead of a quiet take-off, the field is full of spectators. Colin is fat, rarely flies and generally out of shape so it is of no surprise when he flaps into the hedge ruining all chances of ever reaching the French Riviera. Not surprisingly, Colin is very upset with Norbert, blaming him for his failure due to all the spectators. Norbert feels awful and what follows is a very funny, amazing story of how he creates the French Riviera in the field.
In between all this is Farmer Finbar, who has decided that he is going to persuade widow Mrs Muckleton (a farmer neighbor) to marry him. Things don't go as Farmer Finbar plans and Farmer Finbar is heard to say his favorite phrase "Garn" quite a few times!
Book 3: Christmas with Norbert
Poor old Rudolph!
It is Christmas Eve and Norbert, the horse, is wondering about his Christmas present and how Father Christmas knows what all the children want. Let me reassure all parents here. If your child still believes in Father Christmas (Santa Claus) then this book is VERY safe for him/her to read.
As the story unfolds, Colin once again finds himself up in Farmer Finbar's house this time trying to send a note to Father Christmas up the chimney. The only paper he can find to write on is a ten pound note that Farmer Finbar has been saving to buy Mrs Muckleton's wedding ring! When that plan is foiled, Norbert and Delilah launch Colin into the sky to intercept Father Christmas and his sleigh. The result? Rudolph is knocked out and Father Christmas and his reindeer crash into Norbert's field. Poor Dasher has also hurt his ankle so unable to fly. Who takes their places? You have to read the book to find out :)
Whilst all this is happening Finbar is still trying to establish his relationship with Mrs. Muckleton and Ol' Joe Baxter is determined to thwart him.
The books are extremely well written. They are not dumbed down like so many kids books today. It grabs the attention, tickles the funny bone and is suitable for all ages, young and old!
