The horrifying true story of 'Pocahontas' is told in this book. I will call her by her true name: Matoaka (M). M tried to form a bridge between her people (Powhatan) and the settlers of Jamestown, serving as a translator and ambassador. What did M get for her troubles; she was kidnapped and forced to marry John Rolfe, even though she may have already been married to a man named Kocoum. Rolfe benefited from learning native ways of cultivating tobacco, becoming rich. And the event we know connected to her name with John Smith - probably never happened.
