Nehemiah is a brief book in the Bible. Nehemiah is also a man steeped in religious tradition and working for a foreign government. When bad news arrives, he finds an impossible purpose for his rebuild Jerusalem. This book is a series of conversations with Nehemiah exploring how he followed God and led people. In these conversations, Jon Swanson explores prayer, opposition, distraction, injustice, and staying faithful to the end of life. The conversational style reaches beyond the book of Nehemiah and teaches us a way to explore the Bible. A Great Work is not a typical commentary on the Bible, it’s a conversation with the Bible.
Jon Swanson is a chaplain, teacher, blogger, and introvert. After working in higher education for fifteen years, he became an associate pastor in 2000. And then, in 2016, he became a hospital chaplain.
I loved this book so much! Such a clever and creative alternative to traditional "bible study." I felt like I was sitting right there at the table, sipping coffee alongside Nehemiah! I came away feeling like he was a real person (and he was) rather than a distant biblical figure (he was that, too, of course). I especially liked the perspective it gave on all the lists of names in the book of Nehemiah. Highly recommended reading for students leaders, and biblical scholars.
