Powerless
Change isn’t necessarily a bad thing; werewolves know this better than most people.
Rebecca Howarth had a quiet, contented, safe life, despite having been changed into a werewolf as the result of a vicious attack. Then, suddenly, everything that she thought she knew about her life, as a woman and as a werewolf, is turned on its head. The safety she’d felt had been a lie. I was the kid in class who was always being called out for daydreaming. I live in the north of England, in the foothills of the Pennines, one of the cradles of the Industrial Revolution. There’s a lot of history here, and with the derelict mills, bleak moors and lush river valleys, there’s plenty of inspiration to be found.
I’m a wife, mother and spinner of plates. Writing is my passion, inbetween raising the rug rats, keeping house and working. It’s my escape. I have no particular genre that I prefer. I go wherever my mental wanderings take me.
I discovered Fan Fiction in September 2012 and started writing for it in October 2012 thanks to a house move that meant most of my books spent a couple of months packed up in someone else's garage. Fan Fiction gave me a place to practice, a place to learn and the inclination to try writing original fiction. Then I signed up for National Novel Writing Month 2013. The result was Powerless, and the rest, as they say, is history.

First of all, happy day after day after Thanksgiving, folks.
Idrank celebrated hard on Thanksgiving day because, you know, grateful and all that jazz. Last night, I went to a post T-day party and was also...very grateful.
And tonight I am going to a Guns n' Roses concert to jump around, burn off some pie and cheesy potatoes,drink celebrate some more, and have what's left of my ear drums blown to smithereens.
After three full days of such faithful gratitude display, I'm sure tomorrow morning should be swell.
But anyway, this book.
I really enjoyed it.
Apparently, this was Johnson's first real book...
...(she wrote fan fiction before this, also apparently), but I've actually already read book one of her Kairos MC series already, which also I really enjoyed.
In fact, at the moment I write this, I am already over halfway through book two of that series - I started it right after finishing this one last night and remembering that series was also penned by Ms. Johnson. Plus, you can just never have too much solid, well written MC romance in your life, no?
^^^She's super grateful too.
Anyramble, this book had two elements that make personal breadbox quiver with joy:
1) Shifters
2) True Mates
Oh, man.
Lurve.
I am pretty sure I probably said this in my Kairos book one review - cause I am nothing if not fabulously redundant - but I really like Johnson's characters, namely her female ones.
They are real, they are flawed, and most of all, they act like normal, reasonable women.
Also, I like her writing style and pacing.
Anyway, I have to go get my hair did now - we can't have Axl Rose staring at my icky roots in horror, after all - so I must depart; but if you like Were books, this is one I think is worth adding to your TBR.

It was written more realistically - and was far less silly - than most paranormal romances. Nobody is insanely wealthy or freakishly beautiful and world governments will not topple. These are otherwise fairly ordinary people, leading ordinary lives, swearing as they screw together flat pak furniture, living in regular apartments, dealing with office politics at completely ordinary jobs in the north of England. Which was rather pleasant, just so much less froth and disbelief to suspend.
The friendships and the bad guy were utterly believable to me. It's actually tough to write a bad guy who also feels like a real person, so bravo.
The story is told in the first person by each of the two romantic leads. I'm not in love with that tactic, but it wasn't so bad here except for the fact that his internal dialog was written in dialect. He is a Scot from a blue collar background in Glasgow. And I just hate reading dialect. A word or two maybe to put you in the mind of it...but not the whole thing. Meh.
The big fight scene was a bit of a let down. The hero had been made out to be so marvelous prior to this, it was impossible to be worried for him. And her own fights were on the periphery, so it was a dramatic opportunity missed.
Overall, I just also felt a bit like this is a neophyte author. She is talented and I enjoyed her, but she doesn't quite have as firm a hold on her craft yet as you can tell she will in a few years. Something about the pacing. We hear too many mundane details about people putting kettles on, and not quite enough about the heart of the story. Also, the more intimate scenes are fine, but some are just there to be there...and not for any plot purpose.
I will continue checking in on this author as she matures. Looking forward to it!

5 Shifter Stars
After a night in town, Rebecca Howarth was brutally attacked by a man who is wolf shifter. Saved by a police officer and nurse who were werewolves, they helped Rebecca when she changed but also help her understand the werewolf culture. In six years she has made a new life for herself, a boyfriend and a pack. Safety and security that she had in life completely disappears. Everything she knew was false and now she has to figure out how to rebuild her life.
Callum Lennox, the Alpha took the rap for the attack and was imprisoned for 6 years because he did it for the good of the pack so they won't be investigated. The minute he was released, being an Alpha wolf, he won’t be able to follow for long. When he learns how bad things have gotten with his pack. He realizes that the pack isn’t as close as they used to be. Putting them at risk for exposure.

After reading this authors MC books which I loved, I thought I would try this one. It's about werewolves. Not a bad story, I like this authors voice, she's definitely worth trying.

Can’t do it anymore. I’m 7% in and there has been barely any dialogue. I’m bored.... I’m so disappointed because I loved her MC series.

After a night of drinking, Rebecca Howarth was brutally & savagely attacked by a man…who turned out to be a werewolf. Luckily, she was saved and was taken care of by a police officer & nurse who were also werewolves, and helped Rebecca, not only when she changed, but then to understand the entire werewolf culture. But in the past 6 years, she has made a new life for herself, with a boyfriend, a pack & very close friends in her saviors.
Callum Lennox, the Alpha werewolf, took the rap for the attack and was imprisoned for 6 years because he was the only wolf strong enough to resist the change during the full moon. He also did it for the good of the pack, to protect them & so that there would be no investigation. But he will soon be released and with that, returning to the pack. But being an Alpha wolf, he won’t be able to follow for long, especially when he learns how bad things have gotten with his pack.
But when Becca’s world gets turned upside down, the sense of safety & security that she had in life completely disappears and her life changes drastically. Nothing will ever be the same for her ever again. Everything as she knew it, was false and now she has to figure out how and a way to rebuild her life.
When Callum gets out, he realizes that he pack isn’t as close as they used to be and that they aren’t getting the full benefits from being a part of the pack. He also knows that he can’t just stand by and let things continue as they were. He too, has a life to rebuild, but at least, he doesn’t feel the sting of betrayal from his close friends, Michael & Donna.
This was a new take on the werewolf theme (at least for me!) and I felt transported to the English countryside where this story was set. I also liked that since Callum was Scottish, he also spoke differently than all the other characters. So the Scottish spelling of how words sounded was how Callum’s POV was written.

This fantastic werewolf romance strays (bad pun totally intended) from the usual tropes of the genre. Both Callum and Becca are weres, and Callum is an alpha, but Becca is no slouch herself. The story occurs in both POVs, and their individual voices are rich and wonderful, truly distinct from each other. The power of their bond builds naturally and believably, despite obstacles that would seem to be insurmountable. I grew to love them both—and their fantastic friends—intensely. Catherine Johnson creates a vivd, beautifully articulated world that practically engages all five senses. The characters are fully realized, the plot is tight and at times really tense, and the sex is both hot and totally romantic. I would like to place an order for a Callum, please!

This was my first foray into the werewolf romance world; I tend toward biker and fighter stories. I really enjoyed the suspense and action of the book, as well as the romance. I thought it flowed well, with the author doing a great job of keeping the flow of events unpredictable while still being believable. The development of the romance was a slow burn that was a nice change of pace from the insta-love/insta-bang of many modern "romance" novels. I always enjoy a book with a strong heroine, and Catherine Johnson didn't disappoint in Becca. Great read! I'll be looking for more from this author in the future.
