Path of the Berserker #2

Path of the Berserker 2

A world destroyed. An axe to grind. And a path to infinite power. Welcome to my reality.

So it turns out overthrowing a 14000-year-old cultivation empire is going to take longer than I expected, but I’ve made a great start.

I’ve broken through to the Core Realm of my hidden Berserker art, established a new Terran Sect and even discovered a tribe of lost Terrans out in the wild.

There’s a whole lot more at stake and even more people to save, but that’s all the more reason to free the Earth from the empire’s control.

Not everyone is thrilled about my progression, however. From pissed-off sect leaders to the members of the ruling clan, everyone wants a piece of the young upstart rocking the boat.

And that’s just fine with me.

It means I’ll need to grow even stronger to protect my people and achieve my goals. But forces greater than even the empire are at play—dark forces from beyond the stars.

And it’s going to be up to me to stop them.

Will I be strong enough? I don’t know and frankly I don’t care, because when you follow the Path of the Berserker…backing down is no longer an option.

Path of the Berserker Book 2 is a progression fantasy novel that contains immortal cultivators, an oppressive intergalactic dynasty, rage-inducing imperial bureaucracy, magical spirit beasts, fantastical martial arts and one pissed-off MC who’s sick of it all. Fans of western-style cultivation fantasy, post-apocalypse and Xianxia will enjoy.

Every few pages the author interrupts his admittedly fantastic world building so he can imagine what it would be like if women were into him in real life.

Path of the Berserker Two by Rick Scott is a good sequel marred by its weird obsessiveness around the attractiveness of its main character. Max had a Fire Bird elder falling head over heels for him, eventually leading to a massive cat fight between her and Max's actual love interest. Why? There are multiple references to borderline masturbatory moments with the highest leadership of the cultivators getting lost in staring at Max's physic and performance. I just couldn't take any of that seriously, at all. It doesn't make Max a better or cooler character, it just makes the story itself come across as insecure. This is made worse given how absolutely contrived the set up for the last major confrontation was in the trial scene, relying more on the idiocy of the main character than anyone else. And, no, calling him out for being stupid is not a good excuse. Worldbuilding wise, the sequel does much to build off of what went before, and there are some genuinely interesting elements. I do think there's something weird about how many berserker candidates there are in the story and that Kelcy's growth is way too fast, but what are you going to do? Could be worse.

This was a solid follow-up to the last novel in this series. It does a great job of continuing all that was good about the first book without creating all that many new flaws. The fact that it is setting a really good pace for progressing the story makes me want to rate it higher, but there are a few new issues that are holding it back for me.

As I mentioned in my last review, the protagonist acts in service of the plot a little too often for my taste. Also, there are too many action scenes that exist only for the sake of having an action scene and not much else. It's making the action a little boring to me as each fight follows the same path of the protagonist rushing in like a bull in a china shop, realises he is out of his depth, then pushing himself to new heights to come out on top. This would be fine if there were more stakes beyond survival resting on each fight, but without it, you get to the point where you can skip the action scenes without missing much importance, and that should never be true for any part of a story.

My final issue with this book is that I don't buy the relationship between Max and Fia. It's a relationship that has come about because the story needs it to be there and not because it feels natural to the characters and their journey. In the first book, this wasn't a major issue because the protagonist was clear that he was doing a solo journey and romantic entanglements weren't part of his journey just yet. In this book, though, it plays a much bigger role, and it needed to have more weight in order to be the foundation for the storylines that rest on its shoulders in this book.

Overall, this book is consistent in quality with the first book in this series. If you enjoyed that, then you will like this one as well. I am looking forward to book 3.

First, the picky things. Max was only 8 when he was pulled from Earth as he knew it. The references to certain concepts like a 200 IQ seem a little mismatched here, unless I hung out with really dumb 8-year-olds when I was a kid. Sure, I can buy that he’s matured, but he would have matured under his new world where some of the Earthly references just don’t fit.

Also, someone described this better. The action scenes need a new formula. I mean, the guy is on the brink of death every time. Yet somehow he rallies, goes ape shit, and bam! He comes out on top. Give me a little sizzle here I can work with.

The narrator still needs work. Excellent reader, to be sure, but he’s painted himself a tight little box. Narrating is an art. I’d like to see him grow a little.

Otherwise, the story really gets 4.5 stars. The pacing is excellent. The ending got a little sped up for me, a little rushed, but somehow, he pulled it off. Both tribes got equal face time. I confess I can’t always follow the ascension progress. That’s just because I’m a little dumb, but it’s good enough to keep me hooked.

If you enjoyed the first installment, you’ll love this one even more. I’ve bought the third book and can’t wait to get to it after a brief detour.

I love it

Love the book, it’s really good! I would say the only thing I want to happen and it’s random is I would like to see is that Jian yi be told about her flame, in reality max keeps leaving the sect without actual power. When he leaves he should introduce jian yi to the fact that she is a potential follower of the frenzy flame. What right does he have to not offer it to her when she already kindled her flame before he even discovered the bunker and met Kelsey and told her his super secret, secret. Also what about the 30 odd ppl with frenzy potential at the bunker?? lol . Anyway back to Jian yi I think he should help her Especially when she is like family to him and he has already trusted Fia with the secret, but wouldn’t tell the person it could quite literally change her life. And also prolong her life. Cuz at this moment she will die a mortal death and he is blocking her from the heavens because he is being selfish over his secrets. Anyway. I love the book tho!

Another 4.5!
I just am REALLY enjoying this series. How can you not live Max CHUUN! 😂

I also gotta say that his and Fia’s love is so ridiculous. So over the top…. And I LOVE every second of it. Every time they open their mouths all I hear is “I love you Max!” “I love you Fía!” They are so ridiculous. Ooooh! Or from Riley in Inside Out “I would die for Fia!” That’s all I hear when they are together. Ridiculous declarations of teenage love because *drumroll* they’re teenagers! Or just about anyways.

But it’s all good because the author just COMMITS to the bit and somehow it works. It actually kind of reminds me of princess bride. Like it’s SO over the top, but at the same time “as you wish” and “I DIED that day!” are still iconic lines that everyone knows and loves so idk maybe author is actually WINNING because I’m here for it!

Cannot wait for the next book. I know that last scene should have caused apprehension but like… princess has NO idea who Max is. Her plan is so laughable I’m looking forward to her inevitable rejection.

Max. One of my all time favorite honey badgers!

I recommend it

This is the first series that I've come across by this author and so far I've enjoyed it quite a bit. I do try and take it easy on the first book as I was seen it come out kind of shaky even from tried and true authors. When it gets to the first sequel I'm basically looking for everything that made the last book worth reading and then some. The author has at least proven to me that he's a good writer. Separating my personal preference from that I enjoyed most of the first book with only chapters 50 and 52 not being something that I liked at all. Getting to this book and almost all of it I liked. Oh there was a couple of points here and there that I don't want to spoil for anybody but I think could have been better. Towards the ending of the book I started getting this warhammer, doom, and dare I say Perry mason? Vibes. I did enjoy the final chapters though I'm not sure about that princess. Wink.

They stab it with their steely knives, but they just can't kill the beast

This stinking author is going to use his same old go to trick yet again. The re-resurrected vanquished evil power is going to have another hidden reservoir of even more power come back to life and form not only a spectacular new beast, but a really truly, truly, spectacular beast.
UPDATE… this stinking author actually closed the book well. He added a few new wrinkles to his battlewagon which were refreshingly done. So bumped up the review rating :-)

Buckle up, you’re in for one wild ride!

Sometimes you approach the sequel of a stand out first book with a bit of trepidation that it won’t live up to the high level set but boy does this match that and then some. The first book was one of my favourite reads of 2023 and this sequel is already firmly up there for 2024. Roll on book 3 when we follow Max CHUN on his legionnaire journey….

WOW! One of the best book series in its genre!

I've read dozens of LitRPG (He Who Fights with Monsters, Iron Prince, Dissonance, Primal Hunter, etc.) but this one throws you for a loop that you want to experience over and over again! The badass action scenes and comedic delivery meld so well, I just couldn't put it down. Rick Scott, I may have just heard of you and your work but I'm already a big fan. Love the writing, love the series. I can't wait for Book 3!!

This series SLAPS! One of THE BEST in the progression fantasy genre.

It’s easier to list what I don’t like about this series than what I like, there’s so much to like. But maybe what I like most is how this author brings some unpredictability to a genre where we all know the good guy’s are gonna win. Drawing us, the readers or listeners, into his story with engaging and palpable stakes and tension for characters we have come to really care for.

I liked the first one and book 2 continues to keep my attention. The MC has a really steep power/learning curve so this has at least one more book in it. This arc tied off neatly, so pacing was really good, something which isn't always done well. Not a lot else (since I have no real gripes) so I look forward to the next book.

10% of the book i want to DNF. The idea of fighting for a woman is not my cup of tea. But i keep pushing and im glad with my choice. The story getting better with now kelsey in the frame & max will be in legionnarie. Im not really a fan of his love story but im glad that becaus of Fia and his family he pushed himself to the limit. Im looking forward to the 3rd book. Definately 5 stars!

Better than book 1

I think book 2 is better for couple of reasons. I enjoy the pace this series. The story doesn’t get bogged down with useless information. The narrator made listening to this book much better. There was lot less shouting out the story. Thanks for the change. I’m curious to see how the author turns the other humans into cultivators.

worth the wait

I read the first book a year ago and have been checking almost daily for the second to come out and I wasn’t disappointed. It sucked me in just as well as the first one did and I already can’t wait for the third.
Cheers!

couldn’t put it down

It only took me smut two days to finish this book. It’s rare for me to not get bored by descriptions of cultivation mechanics but I really like what the author’s done here. I lost sleep reading this and I have no regrets.

Incredible Second Installment

This book was an exhilarating experience. The pacing was quick, but the gains were backed with purpose and it gripped my attention the whole way through!

Way to go Rick! Can’t wait for the third book! (Please hurry)

Great second addition

Detailed world building that is nice. Definitely liked the nuances of the relationships and the Terran plot out in the hills. Would love to see more of that storyline.

Fantastic!

Great second book, better than the first. It’s rare for a sequel to out shine the first book, particularly in this genre but I feel confident in saying this book achieved it!

Dope

I've really enjoyed the series so far. Characters and fun and loveable with real flaws sprinkled throughout that make them seem more real. I really love the author's use of dialog that makes it seem as if this world is a part of our own. Can't wait for the next book

Fun Read!

It was a fun rollercoaster ride as Max battled the demons on the inside as well as the outside. Great progression of his abilities and skills. Book three should be even more fun to read.

It's a solid action book that feels like a throwback in the best way. The main character is bland in all the familiar ways, and still, it's comforting to have familiar elements explored in a setting that's a little unfamiliar to me.

Very Interesting!!

The author wrote a great story with Max the hero or savior of our world. His progression in his cultivation is good for him and his Clan we all know Only The Strong Survive!!!?

A lot of action

An exciting story, lots of action. Not extremely mind provoking but a lot of fun to read. Hard to put down once you get started, especially if you enjoy science fiction/ fantasy fights and battles with lots of gore.

The book is well written and entertaining but I hate the MC with a burning passion. He is so infuriating to read and none of his accomplishments really feel earned, he’s a dumb brute who somehow prevails despite constant poor decisions by getting mad.
