Gripping read.
I was hooked right from the start. The story builds throughout without any give.

I didn't want to put it down.

The character growth was very good. Relatable too.

The story keeps you guessing, wondering how it will all come together.

Highly recommend!

Trigger warning for graphic death scenes and sexual torture.

Great book. Page turner. Great setting. Perfect mix of relatable and dystopian. Your mind will keep trying to link things and I doubt you will get it figured out before all is revealed. Look forward to more from this author.

Thank you Reedsy Discovery for providing me an ARC of this book!

The Forest of Damned Souls by The Sinister Mind of Tully is a gripping crime thriller set in the newly independent nation of Caledonia. Nikki Achebe is a newly promoted young detective whose first case seems to be an easy one. A wild animal is wreaking havoc in Caledonia, killing innocent residents, and it is up to Nikki to capture it. However, what starts as a hunt for a wild predator quickly reveals something far more dangerous.. Apart from that, her two seniors, Tom Dargo and Xander Bullock, are relentlessly hunting serial killers.

First things first, the book is a page-turner right from the start. The plot doesn't seem to slow down at any point, and the tension keeps building right till the end. The way the plot unfolds and the subplots combine is the work of sheer genius. The climax was a perfect blend of action and emotion.

The characters are the soul of the entire story. The author managed to brilliantly craft genuine and realistic characters that perfectly complement the story. I especially loved the bond and camaraderie of Dargo and Bullock. Honestly, I wouldn't mind a spin-off series focused solely on those two. As for Nikki, it was a pleasure to watch her transform from a nervous newly appointed detective to a confident police officer who wasn't afraid to speak the truth, no matter who was in front her.

It was the way the author combined a gripping plot with wonderful characters that made the entire story perfect.

I also want to state clear trigger warnings: there are some graphic death sequences and sexual torture scenes. Readers who are uncomfortable with them should skip this book.

All in all, it is a well-written crime thriller, something that I have never read before. I am eagerly waiting for a second part to know what happens next. Fans of this genre are in for a treat. Highly recommended.
