The Traveler #5

The Traveler 5

Rate this book
With the forbidden ones now causing chaos around the world of Risona, other kingdoms are in trouble and need help. They are notified that enchanted weapons have been located and send delegates to negotiate for said weapons, but as they travel they are accosted throughout the journey.

Dom and his family are trying to deal with the soldiers and people that are sent to the fortress by their queens. When tempers flare and get out of hand, it results in death. The runemaker finds that his new powers are hard to contain when his emotions get the better of him. And it doesn't help when others challenge his authority and his claim of being a suitor to the kingdom's crowned princess.

Throughout the book Dom is tested emotionally and physically, but he endures with the goal of arming the world with his weapons against the evil ones. Even though he will make a killing on the fees for his weapons, but hey, got to make a living somehow. And he did get permission from a god to do so.

This book is rated mature and not suitable for anyone under the age of 18. It contains sexual content, cursing, nonconventional relationships, violence, gore, and other things that might offend someone. This is the fifth book in the Traveler's Series. If you didn't like the others, then you probably won't enjoy this one either, but thanks for browsing.

While I do like Xander Jade books, they are all kind of blending together at this point. It is hard to keep each series separate in my mind. They are all ending up pretty much the same at this point. This one started off kind of rough for me. There are so many characters it was hard to keep track of who anyone was. It took a good 25% of the book before I had the characters set in my mind. It also seems like the story started to head in a little bit of a different direction since the end of the last book. Overall I still enjoyed the book but it has become just okay.

Where to start.

The last two books had so many additions to the harem that I didn't know who anyone was at the start of this book. As it continues I realized it didn't matter, they are pretty much interchangeable at this point. The main character has devolved into the same type of person he hated at the start of the series.

Good continuation except...

There were multiple instances where the author lost track of previoisly stated or depicted things. Like Lila being surprised at there being demons (pretty sure she knew from a previous discusion) or previously referenced runes or application of his power. Nothing big enough to dissuade me from reading the next book but still annoying.

Also, he keeps putting off Lamar. Why? It's nonsensical. He's determined to confront a duke but not Lamar. He was told by his patron god to kill Lamar. The duke is a new threat, further away, more politically complicated and until the end of the book a more nebulous threat. Also, why is the duke still in good standing if he literally attacked the [current] crown princess with personal forces including his son? How? Why? What's going on? Also, the queen is leaving a lot of extra tasks to a guy who the whole world wants working on his craft.

These recent arcs and intrigue have beffudled me. I find myself pulling away from the series. I currently plan to read the next book.

>TLDR: long story short the author got a little distracted and/or overwhelmed but overall a better read than many out there. I might have given 4 stars with brownie points for the parts I did like but I like to allow for filtering my review in or out if I feel it's critical over a certain amount.

The MC is quite childish and is distracted from why he was sent to Risona.

The story’s dialogue feels very artificial. It’s like “regular people” trying to sound sophisticated by using $10 words in everyday speech. For example, here is a direct quote for the book: “It is imperative that we locate Amelia and conclude this matter with celerity to facilitate my prompt return home, as I have an extensive list of tasks to complete.”

Who talks like that? It’s cumbersome, artificial and pretentious.

The MC, Dom still tends to zone out during important meetings or just when he’s bored. That’s some childish behavior and his women are constantly trying to talk him down off the ledge. He’s also belligerent and volatile. Some of the magic bestowed on him by medium causes him to become a berserker in the presence of the forbidden ones.

Despite his entrenepurial bent, he’s got some serious personality flaws and blindspots. He’s also not at all pursuing his mandate to help men on Risona become more assertive. Yet he only “visited” the male focus group he started and was surprised that they added members.

Despite these flaws, I still like the story. I understand that the next book #6 concludes the series. Let’s see how this wraps up.

Painful to read

I have no idea who wrote this book but the difference is staggering when compared to first 4. The text, both the narration and characters speaking, varies wildly between the original, slightly easygoing type of speech/writing, and something Victorian era aristocrats would use. When a princess goes from a rod-hungry woman of ill repute to "deriving immense pleasure from his use of that appilation" in one page, I felt near physically ill when finishing this book.
To the author, please go back to how the books were written, PLEASE dial down Dominic's women whining like spoilt brats over everything Dom does (most of them are damn killers), and continue on with a great story.

PS the dragon dude needs to get unalived something shocking, like ASAP.

More OP adventure

Alternate universe, magic, fantasy races, base building, harem adult situations

With the long intervals between publications and the really large cast of main and supporting characters, a short who's who list at start would be helpful.

Dom seemed quite volatile throughout, and without good explanation. Maybe a hint why would be forthcoming? Part of his charm has been his reasonable nature, but he's in danger of scaring those he cares about, as they repeatedly see his violence even towards those he knows. And, aren't nephilim a type of angel? But apparently not in this world?

And of course, it ends on a cliffhanger.

Time to "invent" new stuff that will take the world by storm. Maybe he will "invent" spaghetti and have everyone lose their minds.

LOL. The author can't keep his story straight.

Lol. This was more on track and serious, compared to the ketchup invention books. I guess with a known big bad guy to fight, the story can move smoothly along.

I will pick up the sequel.

Lost total cohesion.

I really liked this series and will still read it, but it seems to have lost its thread. Now all it does is bounce from one event to the next, drops characters for long periods, then they just magically appear in the story again. Back in book 3 the MC is directed to do something and two books later the antagonist is still not found. Very disjointed and I feel.like I have whiplash from all the direction changes.

Did not feel like significant progress of the plot

The story seemed to stall with this big book. I kept reading waiting for something more interesting than Domenic’s new anger management issues and suddenly it was over. Just seemed like setup and filler. I’m have liked the series so will read next installment and see if it gets interesting again.

Terrific Fifth Novel

Things are heating up in the Kingdom, and Dom and his family are smack dab in the middle of it. Whether dealing with loud mouth Orcs, Selfish nobles or kingdom politics, Dom and his family are ready to throw down! Get ready for more Drama, excitement and a little romance in the latest novel!

Interesting

A bit like empire strikes back a good run up to the next book and insight as to where Dominic and his clan are going in the next book which I wish I could read sooner.
For those starting a good series like this I envy you as you can binge read or listen to them on audible.

Who wrote this?

If it weren't for the fact that I enjoyed the first part of this book, I'd give it 1 star. It would seem Xander turned the writing of this latest book over to a child who loves using big words with multiple syllables that no one but a Vulcan would use. It's so bad, I could barely finish it. I half suspect AI was used.

Seems shorter than usual

The story continues at a brisk pace. Why the MC has been putting up with so much BS, I don't know. Started this morning and finished tonight, so it seemed a bit short. I hope this means new books are coming soon.

Another excellent addition

This is another excellent addition to the story. The main character is having to deal with the political ramifications of adding prominent people to his family

Another Great Book from Xander Jade

I have really enjoyed this series of books. However, for some reason, it seems as if the books are becoming shorter. Oh well, all of Xander's books have been entertaining and action-packed. I can only hope that there will be more in future.

Book 5 continues the excellence of the previous 4. Read them 1st!

Xander Jade's The Traveler series is well crafted. Interesting MC and supporting characters, well presented storyline, and an intriguing magic system. Well edited with few errors.
I look forward to book 6.

Will continue reading the series.

Good enough that I will read the next book. It definitely felt choppy. Not to mention, the overall story really didn't advance hardly at all.
