Saranna De Wylde has always been fascinated by things better left in the dark. She wrote her first story after watching The Exorcist at a slumber party. Since then, she’s published horror, romance and narrative nonfiction. Like all writers, Saranna has held a variety of jobs, from operations supervisor for an airline, to an assistant for a call girl, to a corrections officer. But like Hemingway said, “Once writing has become your major vice and greatest pleasure, only death can stop it.” So she traded in her cuffs for a full-time keyboard. She loves to hear from her readers.

Saranna writes nonfiction under the name Sara Lunsford. Her memoir about her time as a corrections officer called Sweet Hell on Fire releases Nov 1 from Sourcebooks.

Folks who follow my reviews know I am not a huge fan of serials, I hate having one story doled out piece by piece. I love series but I really do not like their counterparts that are episode based. That is why this one caught me off guard. This book is the first four episodes, which flow rather nicely and felt like a more complete story.

I do not know a great deal about Norse Mythology, so this story fascinated me. I loved the way it mixed modern times and paranormal elements into an old world myth. Everything felt fresh and new, at least it was that way for me.

Brynn is a tough chick but has a heart. It is her compassion that sets her apart from her counterpart, Helreggin. She works to find a balance between who she is as a human and who she is supposed to be as a Darkyrie. It all worked beautifully, an engaging story that had my attention from beginning to end. I am a big fan of sassy independent gals!

The men in the book at interesting but not typical romantic leads. Each has flaws and issues in their interactions with Brynn. She has the added problem of having to figure out if she is the one they want or her past incarnation.

Things get smexy a couple times. There is a touch of detail but not full on erotic. There is loads of sexual tension to steam things up all over the story!

I listened to the audiobook narrated by Hollie Jackson, who has a great read. She kept the story moving along with her energetic and sarcastic tone. She had a real feel for the characters and made them come to life with each phrase. I am definitely going to look for more of her work.

Overall, I really enjoyed this quick listen but hate that I have to wait for the rest of the series. I hope the author decides to put the rest in one audiobook as well. It helps relieve the feeling of something missing that you get when reading an episode at a time. This set of four ends at a place that felt natural, no cliffhanger moments. There are still plot points to address but they are not burning questions. I can't wait to see what happens next for this Urban Fantasy!

This was my first book by Saranna DeWylde, and I liked it very much! My version was an Audible I received from the author earlier this year that I listened to as I worked out on the elliptical. This one of the first books on audio I've used so it took some getting used to, namely her sweet voice that for me didn't quite fit Brynn Hill, or at least the version in my head, plus it goes slower when someone physically reads it to you than it would when I read it myself in my head.

Brynn Hill is a detective for the Kansas City Police Dept. specializing in profiling. She's also the daughter of a serial killer and the best officer on the force, what they don't know is the reason she's the best is because she can connect with the killers and hear their thoughts. She is a hunter and they are the prey. Her latest case deals with a serial killer who kills two at a time and threads their hair with jasmine flowers. She has to solve it before it claims the lives of people she knows. But between that she must also embrace her true self, Helriggan (I hope that how you spell it... since my version was audio I never saw it written) the Queen of Hell... but not wanting to give herself over to Helriggan she finds herself being hunted by a Siren, a serial killer, and her partner Jason (the God she claimed as Helriggan). Fast paced and intriguing to the end, with more of the story unfolding up until a cliffhanger... (which I don't like cliffhangers, lol)wondering when the conclusion of this story will be released!!!

This was my first time venturing into Saranna DeWylde’s literary world. We originally friended each other on Facebook through a mutual author friend, and quickly hit it off. I had looked at her titles (she has many!) to choose from, but could never decide, and therefore put it off.
So when she put a call out asking for honest reviews of Ride of the Darkyrie, I quickly took my chance. I am so very glad I did. What a great…ride—no pun intended. Well, maybe a little one.
“Ride” throws us into the world of Brynn Hill, the reincarnated Goddess, Helreggin, Queen of Hel. We meet other Gods and Goddesses, as well as other creatures that go bump in the night. Of course, we also get to know some hunky men, and enjoy some very steamy sex. Since Norse mythology has always intrigued me, this book was the absolute perfect choice for me.
Ms. DeWylde’s writing style is exactly the type I like. It’s to the point without being blunt, and descriptive without being flowery. The world she has created is dark and gritty, and her descriptions really keep you in the moment. I love that she doesn’t shy away from the “tough” scenes, and instead lets you experience them with Brynn. Not to mention how much I enjoyed certain men in this book.
I absolutely can’t wait for book two, and three, and four, and twenty in this series. An excellent read I would highly recommend to all fans of Urban Fantasy, but especially if like me, you enjoy the Norse legends.

I have been debating on how to write this review for a week now. I really loved Ride of Darkyrie. I am not a fan of serial books, that is why I loved this one. It's the first four serials in one book. I love Brynn! She is smart, beautiful, deadly and kick ass first, then take names type of protagonist. Squeee! Which is my favorite by the way. When we first meet Brynn she is a homicide detective. Her father was a serial killer that was put to death in the electric chair. It just got better from there. We find out that she is no ordinary human but a.... Nope, I am not gonna give any spoilers. ☺ If you like mystery, thriller, paranormal with a strong, flawed, kick ass female protagonist then you will love Ride of the Darkyrie

Exciting Read

Great characters that are unexpected, intriguing, beguiling and secretive. Hill is expected to do what she was born to do but she doesn't want to be undone, wiped out and erases from existence so that another can rule again. She must find the murders within her city but what happens when they find her?
