Summer, 1816. A notorious rebel is about to meet her match...

Lady Georgiana Pendlebury is no stranger to breaking the rules of polite society. But when a so-called ‘friend’ invites her to a clandestine party, Georgiana is shocked to discover the event is more scandalous than even she could have imagined. So when a mysterious stranger offers help, she accepts, not realising their encounter will turn her life upside down.

Later that summer, Georgiana is invited to attend a house party at an infamous castle in Yorkshire. The gathering is a loosely veiled effort to arrange a marriage for the Duke of Northriding, who desperately needs an heir. Duke Gabriel Mauleverer has a terrible reputation as a rake, and Georgiana is happy to be a guest purely for the entertainment, but upon arrival, she is shocked to discover that the Duke is none other than the stranger who rescued her weeks earlier.

As the other ladies vie for the Duke’s attention, Georgiana is desperate to avoid their shocking secret getting out. But she finds herself caught, unable to avoid Gabriel’s gaze. Are they a threat to each other? Or could they be the answer to each other’s greatest desires?

One Liner: Lighthearted and steamy (but clunky too)

Lady Georgiana’s wild side has often gotten her into trouble. But she doesn’t realize just how bad things could be until she is invited to a clandestine masquerade party. When a mysterious stranger offers help, she accepts it.

A few weeks later, Georgiana and her aunt attend a house party at a Yorkshire castle. The gathering is a way to find a bride for Duke Gabriel, the notorious rake. Georgiana is happy to be a regular guest with no intention of vying for his attention. However, the Duke turns out to be none other than the mysterious stranger. Now, what will these two do?

The story comes in the third-person POV of Georgiana (more) and Gabriel.

My Thoughts:

Firstly, why is this not marked as a series? Turns out, The Runaway Heiress is the first book of the series. This is the second. What the Lady Wants will be the third. While it works as a standalone, I couldn’t see the need for some details until I realized it was a part of a series. Then, it made sense.

The premise is interesting. The book starts great. However, the narrative is weighed down by some fluff and continues to be slow throughout. Lighthearted reads aren’t supposed to be this slow!

Georgiana is a contradiction. Some elements make her appealing. But she can also get on your nerves. Gabriel is relatively better, though I wouldn’t have minded a bit more depth.

Note that the book is very much a light read. I liked this aspect. The bits and pieces of humor elevate the story, especially when Georgiana rambles on.

I also like that the characters communicate even if they talk in circles. There is still some presumption, but no unwanted drama. They can sit and talk, which is a plus. It’s okay if what they say doesn’t always make sense to the other person. The important aspect is that they are willing to share it.

There’s no third-act breakup, another plus. Of course, there is some drama and attempts to cause a rift between the couple, but it is handled the way it should be. I like that it serves as a basis for another plot development.

There’s an unwanted chapter towards the end, which could have been shortened to a couple of paragraphs. Once the reader the end, they don’t want more fluff. They just need a nice rounded ending with an epilogue. We have an epilogue, but I could have done without the gossip and rumor chapter.

The book is promoted as a steamy romance, and it is. I’d put it around 3.5ish steam. Think of Lisa Kleypas or Stephanie Laurens (though Laurens would be min 4). Never mind that the author calls Georgette Heyer her inspiration.

To summarize, A Duke of One’s Own is an enjoyable read with a stronger second half. It would have been a 4-star with some of the clunks toned down. Still, I cannot deny that I was entertained by the book and am willing to read more from the author.

Thank you, Rachel's Random Resources and Boldwood Books, for eARC. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.

premise
"a duke of one’s own" follows georgiana pendlebury who’s unknowingly led to a masked orgy. instead of leaving like she should once she realizes, she stays to watch in fascination (she’s so real for this), and this is where she meets the hero, gabriel. the rest of the book follows the characters as they meet again at his estate in york where he’s hosting an event to find a wife.

my thoughts
and this was another fun read! the story was gripping and took a lot of surprising turns, and it was really well written as well. i really enjoyed the writing style!! it was just so engaging and i literally felt transported every time i picked it back up. emma orchard is a wonderful storyteller, and i definitely plan on reading more of her work.

also, i enjoyed reading about these characters way more than i initially thought i would because it started off a bit too insta-lovey for my tastes, but there was actually depth to their characters, and the way he was obsessed with her made up for it?? because he was OBSESSED.

i also loved how much he yapped all the time, like even during the spicy scenes. it was so endearing 😭. and the way he was so scared to hurt her??!! i’m so jealous like i NEED a gabriel.

quotes
”He had never previously held a conscious opinion about women's shoes, but now he wanted to fling himself at those feet and kiss them.”
is this too much to ask for??

”They were very shapely ankles, but God knows he had seen many, many ankles before, and they had not affected him so.” affected by her ankles is crazy 😭 as he should tho i love it!

“…but do not be thinking of me as a tortured, mistreated soul. I am just an average sort of sinner, worse than most, not as bad as some.” he slayed with this.

conclusion
all in all, this was a really lovely read and i recommend it to anyone that enjoys the genre/HR! thank you to netgalley and boldwood books for providing me with an ARC!

I was extremely excited to read this book! A historical romance with a heroine who recognises her wants and is insistent on obtaining them? Yes, please.
The begging was definitely what I signed up for and I got into this book super-fast. Georgiana was breaking rules and didn’t care about her reputation that much - which I always really appreciate in a female book character. But, unfortunately, it all went downhill from there. The tension, which is my favourite key-element of historical romances, was non-existent. The main characters went on and on about how much they want each other, but I’m sorry to say there was no real chemistry between them. Whereas Georgie was a pretty intriguing heroine in the first few chapters, she quickly lost her appeal and became simply boring. The only interesting part about this book was the scheming of evil siblings - which also turned out to be disappointing, as it didn’t do enough damage to meddle with the main relationship. Also, the fact that the love birds were all over each other with no slow burn or tension, completely ruined any chances I had of enjoying this book. I can only praise the author for sticking to the language and culture of the times when the action takes place. In a crowd of historical romances, this one has nothing interesting to offer.

Volatile!

I knew within a few pages I was going to lourve this. Deftly woven Emma Orchard!
An unusual heroine who’s feisty, gives into her passions, and beloved by her family even as they support her through her many mishaps. Lady Georgina Pendlebury craved a little more excitement so she’d gone to what she thought would be slightly outre masquerade dressed as a young man with her new friend, the dashing widow Mrs. Caroline Aubrey. (The action in the Prologue reminded me of some of Heyer’s works but with a great deal more explicitness taking place. You know, aging rake meets feisty innocent.)
Although this time Georgina mishaps spectacularly with the infamous Silver Duke, whom she meets under somewhat spurious circumstances. (And this mishap, unknown to her, looked like coming back to
bite.)What Emma had entered was a scandalously luxurious house where orgies were taking place everywhere!
It’s here Georgina becomes somewhat involved with an older masked man with streaks of silver in his hair.
Neither knew who the other was. Of course they’re reunited just as spectacularly, although this time with family in tow.
The Duke is looking for a wife to beget heirs. Georgina is not looking for a husband without love.
As it turns out the Duke and the now, altogether knowing virgin Georgina, are by circumstances obliged to marry, but will they get their HEA, or are they doomed to a life of lust?
Must say, the tension levels of the story propelled it into a really enjoyable, steamy read, with a side dish of angst and duplicity.

Many thanks to the author and publisher.

This is somewhere between a 3- and a 4-star book. I enjoyed the way it was written. The plot itself wasn't especially unique except for the very sexually-awakened young MFC. I liked the fact that she wasn't just a weak puddle pining for the older, experienced MMC. I've pre-ordered the next book in the series by Orchard and hope it is as good or better.

First of all I would like to thank the publish for granting me this arc. I am always grateful for the opportunity.

The book description sounded really promising. A historical romance with a dash of scandal sounded like something I would like. However, I did not connect with the main characters at all. I get that the way they met is supposed to be a bit shocking and intrueging but I didn’t enjoy that part. After that, the story fell a bit flat for me. He was instantly in love (or at least that’s the vibe I’ve gotten) and wanted to scandalize Georgiana. Overall the story wasn’t for me and I didn’t enjoy it.

I truly wish that I would like this book, but unfortunately I don’t.

3.5 stars rounded down. Lady Georgiana Pendlebury has secrets that she doesn't want to come out. She was involved with a man who wanted to marry her, but was really only after her money. Her family refused him and his half sister invites Georgiana to a party to get back at her. The party is scandalous and she meets a man who steps in to save her, but has an intimate encounter with her as well. Later that summer, she is invited to a party, planned to enable Duke Gabriel Mauleverer to find a wife. What she didn't expect was that the Duke was the masked man from the previous party. They have another rendezvous and eventually strike up a close friendship. He would like to marry her, but she turns him down. Will he be able to convince her to become his bride.

From the beginning this book was steamy, way more steamy than I am used to. The story is pretty straight forward, but there are some bumps along the road. With the tonne, there is always some nastiness, and many who only want to marry for money or prestige, but Georgiana wants to marry for love. She finds Gabriel hard to resist, but doesn't want to marry just because they are lusting for one another. There was lots of fun banter, several steamy scenes and wonderful family support. This book definitely brought the first season of Bridgerton to mind as I read it. If you enjoy a steamy, sexy, Victorian romp, with likeable characters, then this book is for you.

I received an Advance Reader Copy from the publisher. This in no way impacted on my view.

After being tricked into attending a masked orgy, Lady Georgiana Pendlebury knows she is lucky to have her reputation intact. The only person who knows she had a 'romantic interlude' was the man in question, and she's never seen him before. So arriving at a house party with her aunt at the Duke of Northriding's Yorkshire castle, and realising that the notorious "Silver Duke" is that man, is a shock. Gabriel Mauleverer, Duke of Northriding, is in need of an heir, and a wife. The house party this summer is for him to choose a bride who'd be happy to live at the castle, and not just after the title. Gabriel never expected to want any of the debutantes putting themselves forward, but he hasn't been able to forget about the masked lady, and now he knows who she is, he'll do whatever it takes to the bride he wants.

When I saw the cover for A Duke of One's Own, I knew it was my kind of book. Georgie may be a lady, but she cares little for her reputation, or what is expected from her. She is lucky in her family that she won't be forced to marry against her will, just for reputation or for security. So everyone knows she is not at the castle as a prospective bride, but as a guest of Gabriel's sister. She's harmless to the other debutantes, but Gabriel doesn't want any of them, he only wants Georgie. I did think she was too headstrong at times, and was about to spite herself, and Gabriel, by refusing him again and again. Gabriel was portrayed as a rake, and he had had a reputation in the past, but following the deaths of his brother and cousin, he is ready to settle down for the sake of the duchy. Finding Georgie first in London, and then again at his home, he realises that she has awakened something inside him, and he wants only her. He never tries to force her into anything she doesn't want, but tries to show her again and again that he is honest and steadfast in his affection.

The added intrigue of the siblings out to punish Georgie was interesting, but not surprising at all. There were moments when I had to laugh at how obvious the villains were, and how ridiculous the plot was getting. I did like that way it forced Georgie and Gabriel to be real with each other, about their feelings, but it could've been done a bit quicker. Still, it was an enjoyable historical romance.

After several mediocre reads in the genre, I finally stumbled upon a delightful historical romance! The story revolves around Lady Georgiana Pendlebury and Duke Gabriel Mauleverer, whose first encounter is marked by shocking circumstances. Despite Gabriel's notorious reputation as a rake, he needs a wife to secure the future of his dukedom. The memory of their meeting lingers long in Gabriel's mind. Meanwhile, Georgiana, though wary of tying herself to a man with such a scandalous reputation, finds herself unable to resist Gabriel's charms.

While it may not be considered life-changing literature, the novel doesn't aim to be anything more than enjoyable entertainment. In this context, it succeeds admirably. There are several aspects of this book that I really enjoyed. First, the banter between the characters was exceptionally well done. The tension and affection between Gabriel and Georgiana was palpable, and the author skillfully portrayed this dynamic. Second, I appreciated the emphasis on communication between the hero and heroine. It's refreshing to see characters openly discuss their concerns and needs, avoiding the frustrating trope of a lack of communication. This added depth to the story, complemented by the portrayal of internal dilemmas and doubts. Third, I admired the language in which the book was written. While adapted for a modern audience, it successfully captured the essence of the Regency era without feeling like characters from modern America were transplanted into historical England. I also appreciated that the book incorporates several tropes more characteristic of contemporary romances, as well as its relatively broad representation of LGBTQ characters, which the author handled well and made appealing to contemporary readers. The romance and spice scenes were tastefully done, which is a success in the context of historical romance.

However, I felt that the theme of Gabriel's difficult relationship with his father and its impact on his adult behavior could have been explored more deeply. There seemed to be plenty of room for that exploration at the expense of some less important subplots. The villain motif felt somewhat clichéd and contrived, seemingly included merely to add drama to the narrative, a common plot device in romance novels. While this wasn't done exceptionally well, it was still preferable to the typical romance breakdowns caused by a lack of communication between the characters.

At the end of the day, I consider A Duke of One's Own to be one of the better historical romances with spice I've come across. I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone seeking a light and engaging read in this genre.

I found this a real oddity, but overall, I rather enjoyed it and will look forward to reading more books by this author.

The author speaks of her admiration for Georgette Heyer, but although that was what attracted me to this book, I must confess that it bears little similarity to Miss Heyer’s books. However, I must also admit that I think Emma Orchard does write very well,- and even while I was questioning plot lines and character behaviour, I was never bored.

I thought the sub plot with the former ‘friend’ and her half brother was so over the top as to be positively bizarre. I couldn’t believe in that plot line at all.

There was a very high heat level in this book - which I don’t mind as I like a well written sex scene which moves the plot along or reveals more about the characters. However, there were rather a lot of them and I wasn’t sure that every one was necessary.

I loved Gabriel. Emma has created a fabulous hero here and I found him very interesting. I was a little unsure about the heroine Georgy.
. I do find it frustrating when writers transpose 21st century attitudes and behaviour into historical fiction. Yes, let’s show strong women working hard to live a fulfilled life in difficult circumstances. But please, can we.not pretend that those circumstances don’t exist!

I liked the settings in a Yorkshire, particularly in York. An enjoyable read.

The spicy scenes were good but the story just did not work for me. It was too insta-everything. And I don’t know what it is but the dialogue felt overly stuffy and exaggerated. Mostly Gabriel’s dialogue. Also this was way too preachy. A character would suddenly go off on a speech about women’s autonomy, privilege, etc., at the random moments in a conversation. All things I agree with but these modern sentiments felt like preachy interjections from the author rather than coming from the characters. It has to feel natural to the story for me. Felt like a checklist. 🤷‍♀️

When it wasn’t being cringe or preachy, it was fun and engaging. I finished the book with overall good feelings but I don’t think I’ll be running to read their backlist anytime soon.

DNF @ 20%

Unfortunately this book just didn’t work for me. I can appreciate what the author was doing with the writing style, but I found it very dense, wordy and hard to follow. I personally found there was a lot of telling and not a lot of showing. The book just didn’t really capture my interest; I thought the concept was good but the writing style felt very dry. failed to capture my attention

I wanted to like this book but the minute I read the word orgy in an 1800’s era book it was complete turn off for me. I kept reading hoping it was going to get good and it never did. The author had a strange way of telling the plot. It often felt repetitive flat!

A Duke of One's Own by Emma Orchard was a book that caught my attention by the cover and when I read the summary, I knew I wanted to read it. It's the first book I've read by Orchard but I'll definitely pick up more from her in the future as I enjoyed it.

Lady Georgiana Pendlebury isn't afraid to break the rules of polite society so when she's invited to a party by someone she considers a friend, she jumps at the idea. Unfortunately, there's more to this plan than she thought. As she's abandoned by this so-called "friend" in the middle of something more scandalous than a party, and a mysterious stranger offers to help, she accepts, never knowing that their encounter would turn her life upside down.

Later that summer, Georgiana is invited to attend a house party in Yorkshire and the gathering is really an effort to arrange a marriage for the Duke of Northriding (Gabriel) who not only needs an heir but also has a reputation as a rake which makes Georgiana happy to be there solely for entertainment purposes. Little did she expect upon her arrival that her mystery man from that party all those nights ago (and who she hasn't been able to stop thinking about) is none other than the Duke.

As Georgiana does everything she can to make sure their secret never gets out, she can't help thinking about Gabriel and after that night with Georgiana, Gabriel doesn't want any of the debutantes vying for his attention, no one but Georgiana will do. I loved how these two met (spicy!) and their reunion as well. The underlying story of just why / how Georgiana ended up at that party was an interesting twist with some bumbling villains that ultimately brought these two characters together.

Ultimately, I enjoyed this book and I'll pick up more from Orchard in the future. If you're looking for a historical romance with a bit of spice, consider picking this one up. It has a good story and solid characters that will keep you turning the pages.

A Duke of One's Own was a mostly enjoyable Regency romance romp. I liked the story premise and the main characters, and I thought their relationship developed in a believable way within the confines of the setup. Perhaps the views of the characters sometimes felt a little too liberal for the period, but I was willing to overlook that in order to enjoy the story, and that was the only standout anachronism. This one is very much at the bodice-ripper end of the genre, so bear that in mind when deciding whether it's for you. The sex scenes were well-written, and some of them really did help to advance the plot and character development, but a couple felt a little extraneous. Overall, though, this was a quick, fun read and I am giving it four stars.

Emma Orchard is a new author for me. I did my usual research and she is supposed to be steamy but we'll see. :) I see she has only been writing since 2023 and only has 6 total books. I had planned on reading her months ago and just kept pushing it back. I only have 4 books on my TBR list so thought this would be a good time to check her out.

I noticed while reading this book, that she is very wordy. So much so, I found myself screaming, “OMG, Stop talking”. I read a lot of authors that are fantastic but now I realize they are not overly wordy. Many of their books are 170-210 pages and just flow along smoothly. I felt this author was WAY TO wordy. Taking 20 words that could be said in 10 or less. She seems to rattle on sometimes. I mean several times, she would tell something to the MC and then turn around and say the exact same thing of what she told MC to her best friend. Even them thinking to themselves….wordy!!! It might not make sense what I am trying to convey and maybe it’s just me but I felt a lot of the talk was unnecessary. (kind of like my rant 😊)

With all that beings said, Georgiana and Gabriel were interesting. I felt they had no chemistry (probably because they talked too much) although there was a lot of sex. I liked how they met and then surprisingly saw each other again but that was about it. I found it to be a strange read. I ended up skimming the last 40% of the book. I just felt nothing while reading except to want to finish.

“The - ah - heroic role I played there on this occasion, of
course, will be something quite new, and I dare say will go a long way to rehabilitate me in the eyes of the world. It is a romantic tale, in fact, with a little spice to it, just suited to the modern taste. I expect they will make a play of it, and we shall see ourselves on the stage.”

I was left quite surprised by this book, first of all because of the prose and the writing style, which seems directly out of a classic written in the 19th century (in a good way, the author’s very talented).
I also liked the discussions about controversial relationships, marriage and the desire of motherhood in spite of it being also quite a frightening process, especially a few centuries back. There is a great cast of characters that i would enjoy reading more about, especially Georgie’s aunt and her “”companion””🤭
What surprised me was the communication skills of the characters and the sincerity of the relationship between Georgie and her family, i was expecting she would lie to them all and i was proved wrong.
I’m generally not a fan of insta-love or in this case, insta-lust, but it was great to see Georgie and Gabriel’s relationship evolve! They were the cutest and those spicy scenes were on point!!

I’ve got mixed feelings about this one. On one hand, it was lovely, exciting and with a great dose of spice. I love the chemistry between Georgie and Gabriel, although the building between the two of them could have been a little bit better. It’s all about the lust and although that is written well, the deeper connection was written quite poorly.
On the other hand, I had the feeling that the author took too much liberties with the time in which the story takes place. It didn’t feel real. I love the fact that there is a lot diversity, but unfortunately that was not how it was done. It felt too much and it made me not believe the complete story.
I also had some issues with the annoying way Georgie is insecure? On one hand the author tries to present her as a headstrong woman, on the other hand she acts like a boring little mouse.
But… the sex scenes are amazing, really well done!

What to say that hasn’t already been said by my fellow readers?!

In a nutshell- this book was just horny.
The entire plot feels like it’s just about the to MCs desiring each other, and it really lacks depth and foundation.

I like that our heroine had enough agency to realize she didn’t want to be a trophy wife, cast aside while her husband galavants around with various lovers, as was common for the time, but on the other hand, her objection to this was used so dramatically, and never did she just say, “ I wish for a love match”. Her problem was either have sex with the duke now and be unhappy or later once we are wed and be unhappy. It was all a hypothetical problem in her head and I wanted to bang my own into a wall. 2.5⭐️

Editing to add that the writing is good and I would be interested in reading the author’s backlist to find a story I mesh with more. I think this one just needs more emotional connection development.

Lady Georgiana is known for her escapades among her family. This particular evening she's at a masquerade dressed as a boy. Shocked, she is unable to stop looking at the guests. Where are their clothes? She's rescued, then willingly seduced by a gentleman with "glossy black hair streaked with silver-grey." Thinking they will never meet again, she attends a house party and is introduced to the host, Gabriel, the Duke of Northriding, the gentleman from the masquerade. Imagine his surprise when he recognizes Georgie! In need of a bride, maybe he's already found his duchess, but Georgie's not so willing to say yes to his proposal.
A frustrating, scorching read with interesting results.

Delightfully sinful and sexy romp into regency (not so) polite society.

Georgie finds herself tricked into attending a masked orgy. As a lady of the ton, this could easily be her undoing. Thankfully, she is saved by a masked saviour who offers a carriage to flee. But baser thoughts take over Georgie, and she not only allows but encourages this mysterious stranger to have his way with her.
Georgie thinks she has gotten away with it until a trip to Yorkshire reveals her secret paramores identity and hers to him.

Filled with plenty of spice, pearl clutching, and balls, this is a fantastic period romance that is perfect for fans of Jane Austin who want a peak under the chemises and stays.

Thank you netgalley for providing me an arc in exchange of an honest review!

I thought I would love this book but it wasn’t for me, I’m afraid. The premise sounded interesting but the pacing was slow, I struggled to get a proper sense of both Georgina and the duke, it was a bit too insta-lust and the writing felt a bit stilted at times. Unfortunately, not a book for me.

It's been a while since I've picked up a historical fiction romance, and let me just say that this didn't disappoint!

This is a quick-paced, witty, steamy, and scandalous book that really just holds your attention really easily. This was a binge book 100%, as I could have sat down and read straight through this whole thing.

This book really was just an easy and enjoyable read that made for a perfect book to lose yourself in, as you never had to think too hard but rather just flow with the story itself. Plus the drama was amazing, it was giving Lady Wistledown at certain times.

Overall this book was just a perfectly delightful ride and was a great book to lose yourself in.

This book is different from what I expected. It started out great; a woman who longs for more excitement in het life but who finds herself at an orgy; something she didn’t really want! She is then rescued by a handsome anonymous man, who later turns out to be a duke. Great plot, I was looking forward to reading this story. But Georgiana was exhausting. She plays the innocent virgin, hard to get, and berates the duke for being a rake. But at the same time she allowed him - a complete stranger - to pleasure her, at that orgy?! And later she’s angry at him for pursuing her! Yes, Gabriel took liberties with her but when they got reacquainted, he proposed marriage to her and behaved very honorably, quite gentlemanly and sensitive to her feelings. I really liked him a lot. Georgiana refused his proposal of marriage, I didn’t get her reasons at all. So her character was a bit of a disappointment to me. But I did like her adventurous side! She wasn’t cowed by society’s rules, powerful men, or men at all.
There is quite a lot of spice in the book. The main characters are portrayed as helpless victims of lust, unable to control themselves. I think that’s a bit silly.
I really enjoyed Gabriel trying his best to be a good man to Georgiana. The story is taking place in an old medieval castle, which I also liked. Georgiana’s brother Hal made me laugh - what a great way to ‘handle’ an unruly sister! Her aunt and her girlfriend didn’t add much in my opinion, and neither did the addition of a villain. I liked that there was an honest, open conversation between Georgiana and her friend, but it was a bit TMI and quite unrealistic to divulge every single detail about their physical encounter to her friend and family, especially for that time. So although the book has good bones, I expected more. I was lucky enough to receive a digital copy of this book as an Advanced Readers Copy, so I do have hope that some of these issues will be sorted out before it is released, since the book has enough good aspects.
Thank you Netgalley, Boldwood books and Emma Orchard for providing an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion. All thoughts and opinions are my own. .
