When his country needs him… For Green Beret Travis Chapman, special operations and covert missions are his life. When his country calls, he reports without question. Until now. Until he’s tasked with protecting a woman he’d once loved and sent him packing. He’d rather go AWOL than spend time with civilian researcher Claire Reed. Even when he learns that her vital research project is stolen, he thinks twice about seeing her again.
Will he heed the call if it means seeing the woman who’d once broken his heart? But everything changes when he hears that the prototype and specs for the Army’s latest virtual training program are worthless without knowledge only Claire possesses, making her a target for abduction by the clever thief. Despite their past, Travis won’t let anything happen to Claire and puts aside his feelings to go undercover to keep her safe. Can he convince Claire to rely on him to keep the training program out of the hands of subversive military groups and keep Claire alive?

She writes romantic suspense novels that are clean with inspiring messages of faith. Readers love her series for the well-drawn characters and edge-of-your-seat action. She graduated from the FBI and local police citizen academies, so her research is spot-on and her characters are real.
In addition to writing, Susan also hosts The Suspense Zone. She has lived in nine states but now calls Oregon home. Her husband is a retired church music director, and they have two beautiful daughters, two special sons-in-law, and four amazing grandsons
I love reading Susan Sleeman's books! They are packed with suspense, intrigue, action, and some twists and turns along the way! In this story, the author has her characters go through so much. Some threats and events will make you hang on to your seat. The story is packed full of suspense and action. Yet, not only does it have great action and suspense, but there is a bit of romance and learning that it’s okay to rely on others and God because He’s there with us through it all. I was hooked from the very first chapter and scene. Susan Sleeman also had me guessing the whole book. I thought I knew who was involved and who was the bad guy, but boy was I wrong! Her writing is smooth, and the story flows with colorful images. She gets into the nitty-gritty of finding the bad guy. I loved the whole special ops thing and reading about the tight unity these guys have. If you love action, suspense, and intrigue, then I highly recommend you pick this book up and start reading! For me, I’m excited because the author introduced some characters in this book and the idea of a new series that will be coming out soon I can’t wait to start reading it! I was given this book by the publisher which did not influence my review in any way, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
This was a prequel to the Cold Harbor series, though it was only released after the series.
The plot of the book was interesting and the stalker element did its job to sidetrack the characters from the true culprit. I did guess the person behind the theft correctly- it was small things the person did which gave it away. But I was still engaged in the story to see how and when the characters will discover the truth.
I enjoyed all the banter between the hunky heroes.
Captain Travis Chapman is assigned to investigate the theft of a top secret project that Dr. Claire Reed and her team are working on. It looks like it was an inside job and Travis must go and find out who is responsible. The problem is that Travis and Claire used to be an item. But Claire threw him over for her job. Can he stand to be around her once more without allowing his feelings for her to resurface?
This is a prequel to the Cold Harbor series. As always the suspense and romance are signature Susan Sleeman. Meaning they were both intense and satisfying! Not only is Travis sent to investigate who could have stolen the project, but he also is to provide protection for Claire. They work well together and I enjoyed their characters. I enjoyed seeing the Veritas Center and Blackwell Tactical in their early years. On my TBR I would love to re-read all of the series that started right here. I love the spiritual lessons each character learns in each book and I definitely love the romance along with the suspense that keeps me on the edge of my seat. I definitely recommend Cold Silence as well as the books that come after if you are a romantic suspense fan.
I enjoyed the way Susan Sleeman brought together the skills of the Veritas Center and Blackwell Tactical with Dr. Claire Reed and Captain Travis Chapman to create an action-packed story about finding a stolen prototype for simulated military training that Claire and her staff have been developing for several years. I was reminded of a movie some years back with a title about “building it and they will come.” This was a case of building it and someone will steal it. In the wrong hands, the results would prove disastrous to the military specifically and the country in a much broader scope. Travis, with the assistance of Veritas and Blackwell, had to find out who stole the prototype and get it back. No other option was satisfactory. Somehow, he had to protect his heart from Claire who had already trampled on it when he originally was involved in helping to design the requirements for the prototype. The story has multiple twists and turns that will keep the reader trying to guess who stole it and where it is. After reading many of Sleeman’s books that are set in the Pacific Northwest, often involving cold and rainy or snowy weather, it was interesting to be in Orlando with the high temperatures and humidity of summer. Claire and Travis were professing Christians. Notice that I did not say perfect Christians. You will not find one of those walking this earth. In the story, a woman who did not believe in God pointed out to Claire something that should have been very obvious to a believer, but Claire had somehow overlooked the truth. I hope you will pick up on it as you read, because it was something that we all need to remember. I received an advance copy of this book from the author. This is my honest review. All opinions are strictly my own.
My review today is on the Christian Romantic Suspense, Cold Silence. This is the prequel of the Cold Harbor Novel. I'm a huge fan of Susan's work. I don't know where she get her ideas but she always comes up with something new and thrilling. This story is well-written, action-packed, and full of faith. This is an incredible book and I know you are going to love it.
Captain Travis Chapman is a Green Beret and is able to accomplish any mission he is assigned but this one maybe too much. He is to go and protect the only woman he has ever loved. A woman who walked away from him and broke his heart. She has invented a military training prototype that when she's finished will change the military. The device has been stolen and the software. The porotype is useless without the codes and she is the only one that knows them. He must keep her safe.
Dr. Claire Reed has reported the missing prototype to her superiors. She is now out for a run when she is attacked and almost abducted. Travis her ex saves her. He is still as awesome as she remembered. She can't be with a man whose life is always in danger just like her military father who was killed. She was right to break things off with him but now she needed all his skills if she is to survive.
A terrifying journey to stay out of the hands of the thieves. God has a plan for these two broken hearts, a plan for hope and a future. God has a plan for you too. A good plan for peace and not for harm, even in this time of chaos.. Give Him your heart and watch Him move in your life
Once again, this talented author delivers an excellent clean, Christian, suspense romance. The story centers around Green Beret Travis Chapman and Claire Reed, a civilian working on a very important project for the military. A few years ago they were very much in love, but Claire turn her back on Travis, leaving him heartbroken. Though Claire too was very much in love with him, she never told Travis why she turned her back on him. When Travis’s superior officer assigns him to act as the protective detail for Claire when a prototype Claire was working on is stolen and she’s the missing link to make it work, he is hesitant, but when the military calls , he has to follow the rules. As these two navigate through their feelings, the danger against Claire increases. Needing assistance, and with his CO’s approval , he engages his friend Gage from Blackwell Security to help him. Will they be able to find the prototype that was missing? Will Travis be able to keep Claire safe? In the end, will they realize they are meant to be together, or will fear keep them apart? From the beginning, the plot was engaging and the main characters well developed and likable. I have a confession to make. I am not a fan of prequels after a series has been written but I always enjoy the author’s stories, so I decided to view it as a standalone. I was entrusted a copy of this book. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
I was thrilled to revisit this series again! I loved it the first time I read about Cold Harbor and to get to see Blackwell Tactical coming to the aid of Green Beret Travis Chapman as he protects his former love, Claire Reed, who chose her work over him a couple years prior. An important research project she was working on is stolen and since it was for the Army, Travis is called in to help protect Claire and locate the project. When Tavis can no longer protect Claire by himself after many attempts on her life, he calls in his friend, Gage, who runs Blackwell Tactical and Gage ends up bringing several of his team due to their expertise in various areas. The Cold Harbor series was about all these various characters, and I loved this prequel that showed the beginning before they met their soulmates! So fun to go back to the beginning! I also enjoyed Travis and Claire's story. Travis is a lovable guy and I adored his character. He never understood why Claire ended their relationship. It was great when he finally found out why! Claire is so focused and driven by her work. She needed to find a life outside of work! This experience of running for her life cured her of that! Great story!
Cold Silence is the prequel to Susan Sleeman’s Cold Harbor romantic suspense series.
I absolutely loved this book! Everything about it … from the strong alpha hero with the soft underbelly to the geeky heroine who is trying to find her way—and stay alive. Everything blended in the author’s usual excellence.
Plus! This is a prequel, which means we got to revisit (or be introduced) to characters featured in the Cold Harbor series. Like Gage! It’s been a while since I read that series, so I thoroughly enjoyed getting to see the characters before they had got their HEAs. Such a treat. And if you haven’t read the series yet, then this is a perfect place to begin.
If you love clean, excellent, romantic suspense, then don’t miss this story! Now I want to go back to reread the Cold Harbor series, and I know once I start, I’ll want to continue right on through to the author’s current one. They’re all so good.
--- I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with FTC guidelines.
Green Berets never abandon on a mission. Travis Chapman knows this. Yet when he finds his next mission involves working with Civilian Researcher Claire Reed, going AWOL is at the front of his mind! He and Claire have a past, and he thought they would have a future. She broke his heart and he has never been the same. Once he gets on site, he realizes part of the secret project he and Claire worked on has been stolen, and Claire’s life will be in danger as soon as the perps realize she holds the key to making the virtual training program work. Can he risk his heart to keep her safe? His Green Berry training skills kick in overdrive as he makes plans for her protection. They discover there is a mole somewhere, but who and where, and that leaves them with a short list of people they can trust. As their adrenaline rushes, so does their personal connection. Will the two of them be able to overcome their past and be able to find love again? This is another fabulous book by author Susan Sleeman that will keep you on the edge of your seat!
Cold Silence is a prequel to Susan Sleeman’s Cold Harbor series. It was such fun to revisit the characters in this series. I’m amazed at how the author connects the characters and teams from her different series together. It’s like visiting old friends. I also enjoy learning more about crime-solving techniques in Sleeman’s books. She’s great at researching and letting the reader know about law enforcement procedures and new tools to combat crime.
Cold Silence features Green Beret Travis Chapman and researcher Claire Reed as they work together to find the person who has stolen Claire’s research project. They have a past history, and Travis is tasked with protecting Claire and helping solve the theft.
With lots of action, suspense, inspiration, and some romance thrown in, this story kept me turning the pages to the end. 4. 5 stars
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.
Travis is a Green Beret. He is sent to Orlando where a prototype military device has been stolen. Travis had worked at the institute 2 years before. He loved Claire - the director, but she sent him away. Her dad was military and killed in an accident. She couldn't bear the thought of marrying Travis and have him killed on a mission. As they work together, it's obvious they still have feelings for each other. When Claire escapes from being kidnapped. Travis is sent to protect her and recover the prototype. As they dig deeper into the theft, multiple bad guys are discovered. Even though they have the prototype, it is no good without Claire's code. So multiple attempts are made to kidnap her. Travis calls in his buddy, Gage, a former SEAL who now runs a tactical training facility. Such a great book. Lots of suspense. The closeness of special ops teams. Very good. Will keep you guessing until the end.
An Army Green Beret falls back in love with his old flame.
Enjoyed being back with this author again. Travis and Claire story was exciting from start to finish. When Travis came back into Claire life she didn't want anything to do with him at first. But as they were together he became her hero and protector. She had some people who wanted her job and what she had created. But Travis and his friend Gage helped to catch the bad guys. Veritas and Gage company helped them too. Was good to be back with Gage, Coop, Nick and Sierra looking forward to their stories. Travis and Claire love for each other had never stopped. Hope to hear how they are doing in Gage story. So happy to know that Travis and Claire are working togethor. Maybe they will join Gage team one day. Will read more by this author.
This exciting suspense novel is one of the best books I have read by this talented mystery author. Filled with tension and danger, you’ll find it hard to set it aside since you’ll want to read it rapidly to see how everything turns out. The thriller is billed as a prequel to her Cold Harbor series, but whether you have read any of the other books already or none of them, it’s an engaging story that will demand your attention and entangle your emotions and connects to characters we learn to know in her other novels. This tale includes a green beret and a civilian researcher who is working on a sophisticated virtual training program that enemies want to obtain. The many plot threads and twists add to the enjoyment. I received a copy from the author. All opinions are my own.
Cold Silence by Susan Sleeman A Cold Harbor Novel Captain Travis Chapman was being asked to work on a theft at an institute in Orlando. The very place the woman he had hoped to marry worked. How could Travis do his best when her rejection still hurt after two years? He was a Green Beret, that’s how. He’d buck up and do the job. Dr. Claire Reed couldn’t imagine how someone could steal her prototype. Security was high, or so she thought until Nick Thorn from the Veritas Center pointed out all the weaknesses when they came to help out. And worse, Travis was sent to help her! Fast-paced, suspenseful romance that kept me turning the pages until the end. Loved the story and characters! https://justjudysjumbles.blogspot.com...
This was my first book by this author and unfortunately I did not like it. There were many times I was bored and pushed myself to finish.
Claire started with a negative attitude and was rude right of the bat. This was a turn off. Travis came off as a puppy dog waiting to be petted, another turn off.
The detail regarding the computers was so detail and for me to much. I skimmed most of this because it meant nothing to me.
I'm over the second chance romance because for most of the book the characters rehash everything that happened before. It gets so old and boring.
I did figure out early on who was behind the theft so there was no surprise there. I liked the introduction of the other characters so I may read another book from this series to see if they're better.
Cold Silence is the prequel to the Cold Harbor series. Sleeman's books are always packed with suspense, intrigue, twists and turns, and romance, and Cold Silence is no expectation. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this prequel of Travis, a Green Beret, who works alongside the Blackwell Tactile team and Veritas team to find a stolen prototype and protect Travis's ex Claire who is in danger. It certainly must not have been that easy for Travis having to be in close proximity with the woman who had broken his heart two years ago, let alone protect her, but nevertheless, he had to. You don't want to miss out on this exciting, fast-paced suspense.
I really enjoyed this book. It has action in it and intrigue and suspense.
Green Beret Travis Chapman has made covert missions and special ops his life in the military. He goes when the country needs him wherever he is needed. But this time can he go? It's to the US to protect his Claire Reed a civilian researcher. He fell in love with her while they worked on a program with her with vital research for the military. Can he go back and protect her and figure out where he prototype has gone and who stole it? Or will his memories keep him from helping her? Will they figure out what is going on?
COLD SILENCE by SUSAN SLEEMAN is an exciting romantic thriller that will really keep you guessing. When Green Beret, Captain Travis Chapman, is sent by his colonel to the Army Research Institute to find the stolen software of a prototype completed by Dr Claire Reed, and to protect her from abduction and possible murder, he is worried she will break his heart as she did two years ago…… There are interesting characters and many twists and turns in the story. Recommended for anyone who enjoys this genre.
I was so happy to read more in this series. It was a great way to complete it. Susan Sleeman books have well developed characters and storylines. You can’t go wrong for an entertaining read!
You won’t want to miss this book or this series if you haven’t read any yet start with this one!!
I look forward to many more books by Susan Sleeman!
I received a complimentary ARC of this book from the Author and was under no obligation to post a favorable review.
I really enjoyed this book - it held my attention from the first page. Susan Sleeman is an excellent writer and this prequel to the Cold Harbor series is awesome. I like military stories and this one with Green Beret Travis helping out a former love is very realistic. Working on who stole Claire's research project - the story is full of ups and downs, along with surprises. Grab a copy - you will like it.
Probably a 3/5 rating. I suspected several culprits, including the actual perpetrators of the theft, but was unsure until the final reveal. This was a clean read which contained several technical terms related to IT issues which went over my head! Perhaps this would be better understood by a generation younger than myself. At times I felt that the chances taken, especially when it involved Dr. Reed's life, were unrealistic.
Claire had previously sent Travis away as she was afraid that the past could become her future. Now they were forced to work together again to retrieve a vital piece of equipment for the army. This book had me gripped from the beginning. Firstly to find the thief, how did they get it, who was the person after her and would they get a good start to a chosen future? I immediately went to check on the first book "Cold Terror" to add to my library.
This book has very enjoyable characters who are smart, loyal, strong, and varied. The suspense is non-stop through the whole book. The romance is a renewal of a broken one. The whole book is nicely woven together and has a happy ending.
This is every bit as great as the Cold Harbor series. This is a prequel to that series. I can't wait to read the next book of this new series and I plan on rereading the Cold Harbor series. Thanks, Susan for another excellent book. You truly have a wonderful gift from GOD in talented writing.
I enjoyed this prequel. It was very entertaining with unknowns that you had to keep reading just to find out what would happen next. It was a good prequel length as well with great characters and action-packed. I liked the inspirational moments as they maneuver around the emotions keeping them from their HEA and trusting God. I recommend not only this book but this author as well.
Loved the prequel to the "Cold" series! I had read the complete series but didn't mind going back to the very beginning to where it all started. Can Green Beret Travis Chapman protect civilian researcher Claire Reed from attack while figuring out who stole an Army prototype? Twists and turns will keep you guessing until the end. Add in a splash of romance and you'll enjoy the ride!
I really enjoyed reading this book. It is a good mystery, was action-packed, and had many twists and turns. I highly recommend this book. It is another great story by Susan Sleeman.
I don’t know how these two had not killed each other (not literally). This is a very very very action packed novel. I cannot wait to read the next one. If your enjoy sitting on the edge of your seat as you read—read this one now!
This is a new author to me. I very much enjoyed her writing style. The interaction between the hero & heroine is excellent. I loved the mystery aspect also. I look forward to reading more of her works.
Great book! Filled with intrigue and a few scary moments. The “bad guys” almost won a few, and the “good guys” eeked it out. The romance is part of the story and doesn’t take precedence over the mysterious situation. Looking forward to the rest of the series.
