Matt Tavares was born in Boston, and grew up surrounded by books and reading. From the time he was very young, his mother read to him every night, and his family made countless trips to the public library. Years later, as a studio art major at Bates College, he rediscovered his love for picture books, and decided to try to make his own.

For his senior thesis project, Matt wrote and illustrated a story called Sebastian's Ball, which eventually became Zachary's Ball, Matt's first published picture book. Zachary's Ball went on to win a Massachusetts Book Award Honor, and was named one of Yankee Magazine's 40 Classic New England Children's Books.

Since then, Matt has published eighteen more books and has won several awards, including three Parents' Choice Gold Awards, an Orbis Pictus Honor, and two ALA Notable books. His artwork has been exhibited at the Museum of American Illustration, the Brandywine River Museum, and the Mazza Museum of Picture Book Art.

When Matt's not working in his studio on his latest book project, he travels the country speaking (and drawing) at schools, libraries, conferences, and bookstores. He has presented at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Eric Carle Museum, the White House Easter Egg Roll, and he's even done a few book signings at Fenway Park.

Matt lives in Maine with his wife, Sarah, and their two daughters.

Twice as Nice!

Celebrate the season with this gift set. It includes two Christmas books that come in a festive slipcase, along with four illustrated, punch-out decorations.

The first book, “Dasher,” tells the story of the reindeer family’s sad beginning. They are being held by a mean man who forces them to work hard at night. Their days are spent cramped together in the heat, while people crowd around to see them.

One night, Dasher escapes, meets Santa, and her whole life changes. She discovers the joy of flying with the sleigh, the cool snow of the North Pole, and all the carrots she wants.

Her joy is complete when Santa makes it possible for her entire family to get free. They all get a new, wonderful life with Santa at the North Pole.

The second book, “Dasher Can’t Wait for Christmas,” continues the story of Dasher. In this tale, she is having trouble waiting for Christmas Eve. That is because Dasher loves decorated Christmas trees, hearing Christmas carols, and seeing the Christmas lights from the air!

One night, Dasher hears Christmas carols, and flies through the air to find them. It is much further than she thought, but she spots them. Dasher gets to hear and see all the things she loves.

Because it is snowing when Dasher leaves, she can’t see the north star to guide her home. She is not sure if she is going in the right direction.

Tired, Dasher must land, and then falls asleep. She is awakened by a little girl—and it is Christmas Eve day. Will she get home in time to pull Santa’s sleigh?

Both hardbacked, picture books have happy endings, and beautiful illustrations done by the author. They are a joy to look at, while the stories will touch youngsters, as well as, adults’ hearts.

These will be loved by all who like Christmas, and want to enjoy more of its charm. This lovely five-star set would be a delight to own, or to be gifted.

Thank you, Candlewick Books, for providing Tickmenot with a book to review. Opinions are my own.

The Dasher books are sensational. It’s heart-warming, unique, beautifully illustrated and is everything you could have wished for in a children’s Christmastime story.

Dasher tells the tale of Dasher, before she was Santa’s reindeer, who begins her life in a sorry state stuck within a travelling circus with her family. But one day when she has the opportunity to escape, she seizes it, and stumbles across Santa.

At this point in time, when there weren’t quite so many children believing in Santa and quite so many presents to pull along in his sleigh, Santa relied on a single trusty horse to help him. But when Dasher arrives Santa decides that he could really use Dasher and her families help, rescues them from their slavery, and so begins the story of Santa and his reindeer.

I just love it. It makes sense, it’s beautiful and an absolute wonder to look at and read. The story of a gentle doe wanting to help children, and the Santa who makes it possible. The sequel which is as beloved as its predecessor, both now in a beautiful gift box.
