I love my library, I really do and because I love my library I frequently check their featured books list. This one happened to be on one of those lists and because I was looking for a short easy read and wanted to give this one a shot.

Right off the bat though I knew this book would not be for me and this was one of the few cases where the book had absolutely no redeemable qualities. In fact readng it gave me a migraine, I'm being truly honest here in saying that.

The book is supposed to be a work of "urban fiction" but in my honest opinion it wasn't even close. The language the author used was forced, you can tell she's unfamiliar with how teens talk now. A few times in the book she had the Chelsea's older brother talking like he as from the early 1900's because he was talking about boys courting her and other such things that didn't fit the time the book was set at all. I mean at my high school no teenage boys used words such as "courting" and I've only been out of highschool a few years. Heck my friends who are loyale followers of the blog can atest to the lack of intelligence portrayed by the guys we went to school with.

Another thng that bothered me a lot about the book that instead of being a book about Chelsea it was a book about her brother and his inner thoughts and told from his point of view the majority of the time. The book was terribly written and I wish I had not spent the time reading this book while I could have been reading a book I enjoyed. This book was so disjointed I wish that it had never been published.

I would never in a million years recommend this book to anyone at all especially not to my readers. I wouldn't wish this book on anyone it was just that bad. However, if you do read it come back and tell me your thoughts on it.

Book Check #2

This book was okay. It didn't really get me excited to read on. It was a very slow and boring story.

This book is about a girl named Chelsea Spain. She wants to be a free girl but her dad doesn't approve with the way she's acting. She's growing and wears less clothes and acts like the coolest girl ever. Her family isn't the richest in the world. Her dad is a mechanic and hates it. Her mom is a teacher and a great one. Her brother is a 16 year old boy who acts just like her dad. After Chelsea's friend got drunk and passed out in an alley, her dad has been harder on her. She feels like she has no freedom. Then her mom and dad gets in big fights over it. Her dad found out that the place he works at is going out of business and he can buy it and save it. Chelsea's mom doesn't agree and doesn't want to lose everything they have. After the fighting Chelsea has to listen to she becomes more rebellious. After school, boys that are on drugs offer her a ride around the block. Chelsea doesn't really want to go but her friends peer pressure her into doing it. After getting in the car, the driver goes on the highway. He goes 100mph and almost hit a car head on. After the boys leaving the girls at a gas station, Chelsea called her dad for help. Her dad picked up all three girls and took them home. Chelsea cried herself to sleep because she was so scared of what could've happened. After everything settled down, her father went to the bank to get a loan on the new business. After school, Chelsea and her brother went to see if they got the loan. They did and cried from joy.

Themes: Hi-Lo, High school, neighborhoods, family, loyalty, friendship, urban teen fiction, immaturity, rule breaker, teen rebellion, temptations. Written for young adults, the Urban Underground series confronts issues that are of great importance to teens, such as friendship, loyalty, drugs, gangs, abuse, urban blight, bullies, and self-esteem to name a few. More than entertainment, these books can be a powerful learning and coping tool when a struggling reader connects with credible characters and a compelling storyline. The highly readable style and mature topics will appeal to young adult readers of both sexes and encourage them to finish each novel. Harriet Tubman HS Series-- Chelsea Spain bridled under her father's harsh rules. But she was growing up too fast. Someone had to rein her in until she had enough sense to handle herself better. Whenever there was the temptation to take a risk, she went for it. Egged on by her immature friends, was it too late to learn that some risks are just not worth taking

I just finished reading this book called Wildflower by Anne Schraff. This book is about this girl name Chelsea and her family, and she also have a best friend name Athena.Athena parent let her go wild but Chelsea's father still thinks that Chelsea is a little girl so Chelsea have to live under her father's rule. but Chelsea is growing up too fast.

I like this book because it's young adult and entertainment. This book is young adult and entertainment because Chelsea's best friend, Athane gets drunk and pass out in an ally. Chelsea's mother tells every single thing to her mother, but the kids and her husband didn't liked that. Chelsea went for a car ride in Cory with Athena, keisha and Brandon.

This book called Wildflower by Anne Schraff is about this girl name Chelsea and her family, and she also has a best friend name Athena.Athena parent let her go wild and act unresponsible but Chelsea's father still thinks that Chelsea is a little girl so Chelsea cant do anything that her bestfriend does but she has to live under her father's rules but Chelsea starts to grow up too fast.
I really enjoyed this book mostly because it's for young adult and is very entertaining for us teens because Chelsea's best friend, Athane gets drunk and pass out in an ally like how most teens spent there weekends. Chelsea's mother tells every single thing to her mother, but the kids and her husband didn't liked that. Chelsea then went for a car ride with Cory with Athena, keisha and Brandon.

I started a mentor reading program at the high school, and this is the first book my 2 female students picked out to read. The idea of the program is to increase reading comprehension, and part of that is to get the students to read high interest/low level books.

About the book, it's a quick, easy read that engaged me and hopefully engaged the students. For me, the writing was a bit plain but it definitely fulfills its purpose for the students. Overall, I enjoyed the plot and overall story/message. Here's more info on the program if anyone is interested:

I had to remind myself that this is a book for low level readers that want to read about something they find interesting. I still found that the teenagers did not speak realistically, and I really hated that the back says the book is about Chelsea, and it really is from Jaris, her older brother's, point of view. This book is written by the same lady who wrote many of the Bluford High books, and my students love these books, so they will probably like these, too.
