I always want what I can’t have. My business to succeed through winter. Someone to kiss me goodnight without the pressure to settle down and start a family. And now, my old high school flame.
When Callum moves in across the hall, he is just as handsome and flirtatious as I remember. Years ago, I thought we were perfect together. But our worlds now are far too different. Mostly because of the other girl in his life. His daughter.
Callum
This is not the life I wanted. A broken marriage. A bitter custody battle. And an undeniable attraction to the woman I shouldn’t want.
Cassidy is a ghost from my past. A reminder of the old me. The one who was carefree and thought the best of people, instead of the worst.
And I can’t shake the feeling that our lives have been thrown back together for a reason. I just need to convince her that we’ll work this time.
-- Because of Her is a steamy romance about friendship, love and accepting the unexpected. A standalone story, it is the first full length novel in Bookstagrammer Devon May’s Because of Love series.
When she was 10, Santa brought Devon a “how to write a book” journal. Publishing her debut novel more than 20 years later, she’s glad it finally got put to use.
Devon May resides in Melbourne, Australia with her husband and the two tiny humans who call her mum. When she isn’t breaking up fights, she enjoys books that either break her heart, or turn her on. She carries her emotional support Kindle everywhere, drinks far too much coffee and will never be caught without a hair tie on her wrist.
This was a fantastic debut novel, with really relatable characters and emotional moments.
Minor spoilers ahead.
I really felt for Cassidy and her struggles with infertility despite not having experienced it myself. It certainly gives a good perspective on those who do experience it and how emotional it can be. I loved Cassidy with Cameron and could really feel their chemistry and connection. I loved how supportive they were of each other especially when it came down to experiencing anxiety attacks.
I'm really looking forward to reading the next instalment in this series by Devon, and I'm very grateful for getting the chance to read this one early.
Only seeing now this was her debut novel, and for that it deserves a massive hand clap👏🏻💕
Great characters, even though I have not been through the same experience as the FMC I could really relate to think what I would have done in that situation and I think the author wrote it perfectly. I love that there was actual thought into this process and not two people just jumping into a relationship.
Great chemistry, a single-dad romance is usually not my opt but I then think of how the FMC handled it and think hmm, maybe this trope will grow on me!
This is an absolute fantastic debut novel from devon may. Once I started, I didn't want to put it down. Had plenty of romance and swoon worthy moments and all of the characters were so likeable!
There were a couple of things introduced that I'm not sure why - could be hints for the next book? (Male MC owning the building and the owner of the winery?) I am super keen for book 2 but also am sad we already know the outcome because of the epilogue but only because I love a good surprise!
This is my own personal opinion and may not even be a thing for other readers! But I'm a sucker for emotional romances and so the only reason this has 1 less star for me is that I think it would have hit more emotionally if we got more back story for the main characters. If we had more flash backs of their friendship and their nicknames etc and leaving each other, then it would have hit so much harder. As well as cassidys upbringing and her love for ballet. Mentions here and there weren't enough for me.
Regardless, I really enjoyed this! The angst, romance, plot. I felt such sadness for Cassidy and reading her inner thoughts, but such relief when she finally gave in and accepted their love and the relationship

I absolutely loved Because of Her. There is a TW in the beginning for infertility, so this won't be a spoiler:
Rarely do authors get infertility well. It's an emotional rollercoaster, makes you feel selfish at times, creates big stories in your head and heart that seemingly make no sense to someone who doesn't worry about their fertility.
Devon nailed it. She handled the infertility story with such care and dignity. As someone who has battled infertility over ten years, I felt understood and seen. It was realistic and relatable. I usually don't read books with infertility because it's handled so carelessly, Devon exceeded my expectations.
I skip spicy scenes and was able to keep the flow of the plot and the slow burn of it all without losing anything skipping, which I really appreciated being able to do so.
Overall it was a sweet read, one to quickly devour and leave you wanting more!
I received 𝘽𝙚𝙘𝙖𝙪𝙨𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙃𝙚𝙧 as an ARC and these are my thoughts:
It was an enjoyable and emotional read. The story developed differently to what I had anticipated but I wasn’t disappointed!
It is a second chance love, friends to lovers, single father, mental health representation (anxiety and panic attacks, grieving) story.
It follows Cassidy and Callum as they reconnect many years after parting ways, after fear and miscommunication drove them apart as young adults. Now in their thirties, Callum is divorced with a small child and Cassidy is trying to pick herself up after breaking off her engagement. They become neighbours and all the feelings they had for each other in the past, come back in full force.
I say it’s an emotional story, because both MCs struggle with anxiety and it was refreshing to see a male character be vulnerable and, even weak - men are only human too. And Cassidy’s journey to accepting her infertility and all that it meant for her future was at times, heartbreaking as she was full of self doubt, hurt and fears.
I was happy to see how both MCs grew throughout the story and how they overcame their fears and doubts in order to give each other a chance. The second chance love and found family themes were well done and I adored Callum’s daughter! And Cassidy’s best friend Amira was just a wonderful source of help and support.
I recommend this book if you want an emotional story that: ✔️ has slow burn, ✔️wouldn’t leave you completely destroyed, ✔️ is spicy! ✔️ has character growth, ✔️and has a HEA.
This book had all my emotions going crazy. The storyline was a real story with real characters you could relate to. To see the relationship build but also the struggles along the way was something you could relate to.
For me, as someone who struggled for years with undiagnosed infertility, this hit home hard! The emotions and the feelings were so honest but well written and exactly how I remember feeling when going through the motions of IVF and potentially facing a life without the kid you long so much for.
Callum and Cassidy are a fantastic couple, and this is a fantastic second chance romance with many elements written in to enjoy along the way!

My goodness. I did not at all expect the emotional rollercoaster I just went on. Note to self. When the Author tells you the characters have emotional baggage you better believe your going to end up sobbing while your heart breaks.
I actually loved the characters in Because of her. Not just our 2 main characters Cassidy and Callum. But also Noah and Amira.
Cassidy though, My heart broke for her. At first I wondered why we were receiving so much backstory into her life but I learnt shortly after that her past trauma and trials so greatly shaped and affected her present life and relationships.
I would definitely recommend this book to fellow spicy romance lovers.
I can not wait to read the next characters stories in this stand alone series of books.
I was lucky enough to be gifted an advanced copy of this book to sink into and it did not disappoint.
When I received the email getting an ARC copy after weeks of seeing teasers on insta, I was excited! I was not expecting this book to put me on a mini rollercoaster of emotions, where close to the end I was SOBBING!
Very few stories have gotten to me the way Callum and Cassidy's did. The slow burn of rekindling the friendship, to toeing the line between wanting more and not wanting to enter new relationship after breakup/with a child. As an ex-dancer, and a mum to a little girl whose just started ballet, I absolutely devoured the ballerina storyline! I loved that this was the connection that bonded Maisie and Cassidy.
Before we had our first 5 years ago, we struggled with 'unexplained infertility' for years! This pulled on my heartstrings and the part where she absolutely loses it after a pregnancy announcement had me right back there. This was when I started sobbing and couldn't stop, or put the book down until I was finished. I needed her to have some form of HEA.
I love the dual POV and the side-characters. I truly wanted more background to their past, the nicknames. I wanted more Amira & Noah. The story behind the owner of the winery.

Because Of Her was a very emotional romance book. It touched on elements of infertility, second chance love, and divorce with kids involved. It was very well done and quite a heavy romance book (if that makes sense).
I really felt for Cassidy with her struggles, and although infertility isn't something I am intimately familiar with, I believe Devon May portrayed the emotions in this story very well.

Star Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Spice Rating: 🌶️🌶️.5 Trauma Rating: .5☠️
Because of her is a cute, contemporary second chance romance, built on the teenage love and regrets of our main characters, Cassidy and Callum.
Set in Melbourne, we follow Cassidy while she learns to accept herself and those around her, while battling some serious inner trauma and beliefs about her self and self-worth. We follow Callum as he learns the ropes of being a single dad, and trying to believe in feelings, hope and love for a second time.
Because of Her features mental health and infertility representation, it is important to read trigger warnings before you read as it may be triggering for some.
Over all I really enjoyed this story, it was quick, fun, and light. I loved Callum and Cassidy’s story and I love a cute second chance romance.
Received as an ARC. Thank you Devon for the opportunity and congrats on your debut.
This book just wasn't for me. The miscommunication trope was strong and I found that there was a huge disconnect between the characters thought processes and their actions. In one chapter, they would be getting closer/happier together, but then in the next they would convince thsemselves they weren't right for each other (again) even though nothing had happened that should have changed how they were feeling from the previous chapter. The only true conflict was the miscommunication, and I don't feel it made for a strong story. Even the FMC's previous relationship ended because of poor communication. It was just too much for one book.
I should say though that it wasn't completely unreadable. There were cute moments in the story and I did find myself wanting to finish and make sure they got their happy ending (they did.) I think I might have enjoyed it more if we had gotten some of the story from their first relationship (it's a second chance romance) and had been able to meet the characters then and now rather than little pieces picked up along the way. They had these nicknames for each other that made absolutely zero sense until closer to the end of the book when they finally got explained.
All in all, I think this would be a great book for others, but not for me. TW: divorce and infertility are both heavy parts of the story.
What an emotional roller coaster that stayed true to a second chance romance, with moments that will leave you sobbing. This was Devon’s debut novel?? Wow! Such a relatable take on this spicy (mostly towards the end) romance novel that leads right into her 2nd novel in which is yet to be released.
I loved this book so much!! My new favourite romance and I think a possible new favourite author!
Really sweet book, with some harder themes throughout. However, it was written so beautifully and wrapped you up in the characters world. I can not wait to carry on with this series 💕
This was a really good debut novel. There was spicy, cute mushy romance scenes, heart break, real life issues that take precedence over a relationship.
I couldn’t feel the adult connection between Cassidy and Callum. They were in love when they were teenagers but people change over time, I wish there was more of them learning each other again through the book. Cassidy never let herself be happy, she couldn’t enjoy the day for what it was without running away.
Maisie was honestly the star of the book. Her energy was contagious, she immediately fell in love with Cassidy and looked up to her.
This book is very heavy with miscommunication, fertility issues and second chance love.
Gorgeously written this book will pull at your heartstrings and make you smile. Keep a fan handy too because things get steamy!! Can't wait to see what Devon May writes next. She's definitely one to watch!
Very cute book, I love a good 2nd chance story and this is a nice one. A sad bit about the infertility issue and what the FMC Cassidy goes through to come to her final decision about kids.
4.5 stars! I was lucky enough to receive and ARC copy of this book, but it was excellent. My only reason for not giving it a solid 5⭐ was the element of miscommunication - it was handled so well in the narrative and plot, but this always angers me 😅. I loved the chemistry between Callum and Cassidy, I loved the way they reconnected, and I loved everything thrown at them through the plot. Devon May is an excellent author for being able to write such a cosy and sweet romance novel. I can't wait to see what comes next! (There is a hint, and I'm already angry, purely because of who is involved 😅 - but in angry in an engaged way I swear!) I have never managed to finish an Ebook before, because I get distracted or forget it exists. The fact that this took me less than a week to devour (I was reading at a music festival) shows how addictive this plot was.
This was a great debut novel by Devon May. I devoured it!
It was well written, with relatable characters facing everyday challenges. There are trigger warnings around fertility in this book so please consider the warnings provided by the author before reading.
Set in Melbourne, childhood friends, Cassidy and Callum, cross paths again after Callum moves into the building. They had crushes on each other in their teens and with those feelings still simmering beneath the surface we go along for the ride as they explore a relationship and are challenged by their insecurities.
Overall a very real and relatable read that I highly recommend. It had slow burn, spice and hints at what is coming next in the series.
Get ready to be taken on an emotional journey. This spicy second chance romance explores a number of issues such as anxiety and infertility. Told from the dual POV we get to know Cassidy and Callum. I loved both these characters. Cassidy was so relatable as she struggled with her anxiety, business woes and feelings for Callum. I loved Callum for being so caring for his daughter. The chemistry between the two was electric. It was nice to see them become friends again and see their relationship grown.
As well as two amazing main characters thee was a great range of supporting characters. Having read the prequel novella I was glad to catch up with Cassidy’s sister Maddison and Oliver and find out what happened next. Daughter Maisie was cute and a scene stealer. My all time favourite was friend Amira- she was the best, I was hoping the next novel would be about her! I can’t wait to read more of the series.
“I don’t believe in fate. But I believe the world brought us back together for a reason. And I have to believe the timing is right now, because I can’t imagine not knowing you again.” UHM, EXCUSE ME CALLUM??? *SWOON* 😮💨🥰🥵
📚: Because of Her 🖊️: Devon May ⭐️: 4/5 🌶️ : 3/5
Callum is a single dad, recently divorced and moving out of his home he shared with his one time family. He moves into a temporary apartment in a building he owns.
Cassidy is a single girl, trying to find her forever after a long string of dating & it always ending the same way.. she swears off men after her last failed attempt at a date.
The second these two see each other they realize the unfinished business they have from their teenage sparks! A lot has changed for both of them, except the tug their hearts have toward their lost love.
This story unfolds to be a second chance at love, forced proximity beautiful love story that gives first love a chance at redemption! The main characters are loving and relatable, the scenes are steamy 🥵 but not too over the top! The real love this story portraits is everything! 🤍

Loved this book, it felt REAL. The plot is something that many people experience and have the family dynamic of. Fertility issues are so relevant in this day & age, and it was approached with ease and gentle hands. Never once did it make you feel like the author over stepped or went too far in that topic. The respect between the MMC and his ex was also refreshing & their divorce/situation was shown as wrong person/wrong time in the sense of friendly divorce. It was all the feels and the realness throughout the book made it enjoyable! On to the next for an ARC review 😌😉
Because of her follows the story of Cassidy, a florist who lives with her best friend and wants to find someone to love without the pressure of starting a family, and Callum, who’s dealing with a divorce, his new role as a single dad, and the fact that he’s moved in to an apartment that’s right next to Cassidy, the girl he had a crush on as a teenager.
This is a second chance romance, which I really love. The attraction was instant and it was clear they loved each other when they were young. Callum was very doting as a father and I sympathised with his struggles to do everything he could for his daughter. Cassidy’s struggle with infertility was also very touching and I connected with her on many accounts. Her moments with Callum’s daughter were really sweet and probably my favourite scenes.
I also loved Noah and Amira and I’m hoping they get a book!!!
If you’re looking for an Australian indie romance with lots of pining, this is for you!!!
what a DEBUT! Callum and Cassidy will forever have my heart. There is such a great jealousy scene in this too and we all know i FROTH over jealousy scenes.
"I've never made a friend come with my tongue before." EXCUSE ME. I JUST DIED DEAD.
vvv keen for the rest of the books in this series and anything else Devon May brings out.
Initially, I felt the thrill, the excitement and I understood the issues that came their way (Callum and Cassidy) But this book was one after another until about the 90% mark. The main concern of Cassidy should've been resolved earlier if they have the right communication.
A second chance at love and the chance for a family…
With his divorced finalised, it's time for Callum to finally take the step of moving out of the family home, even though it will be hard living apart from his daughter Maisie. An unexpected bright spot on his current situation is a blast from the past in the form of his new neighbour - Cassidy, the girl he used to crush on while they were working together but who he let slip through his fingers for fear of ruining their friendship. For Cassidy, she always thought her and Callum were endgame, and after a recent heart-shattering breakup, his presence is a nice surprise, making her feel like a teenager again. In each other's company, it's a reminder of more carefree times, with no worries about businesses and families. As much as Callum wants to step back into his old life, Maisie is his priority, and Cassidy knows that she was always been Callum's first priority, no matter how much they love each other. Having struggled with infertility, Cassidy has had a rough time with relationships and the prospect of not being able to have a family. But with Callum fighting for both of his relationships, Cassidy is forced to finally face the true depths of her heartbreak and trauma if she wants the second chance she's been dreaming of.
Single dad romances clearly have me in a chokehold this year! And Devon delivered one that I absolutely adored and couldn't get enough of! Oh, and a moment to appreciate that this is Devon's debut - what a flipping fabulous way to kick-off your writing career!
Callum and Cassidy's relationship was so sweet, especially as they reconnected with their former selves and their current selves. They had such a great chemistry throughout their slow burn and forced proximity romance. Throw Maisie into the mix, and this second-chance romance will filled with so many feet-kicking, swoony, sweet, and heartfelt moments. There was definitely a bit too much miscommunication between these two, but in the end it brought out a strength to their relationship, and for Cassidy in particular the miscommunication was the cause for some view-changing realisiations.
A trigger warning for discussions of infertility, which includes mentions of previous failed IVF and miscarriages. Cassidy's fertility struggles is something that she works to come to terms with throughout the whole book, as well as her approach to how she sees family. Her relationship with Callum and his daughter comes with highs and lows in terms of her views of being a mother and having children in her life. Also a trigger warning for anxiety and panic attacks, which affects both Cassidy and Callum. Devon handled both topics really well, filling these moments with lots of heart and emotion as well as the tenderness and delicacy that they deserve.
I could not get enough of the story Devon crafted as she delved into the complexity of finding love when life is already full, or you believed you've come to terms with the fact that it won't be as full as other's. Her writing style sucked me right into the story and I did not want to put the book down for anything. Add in the fact that Devon's Australian and the book was set in Melbourne, it was like the cherry on top (seriously, I need more Aussie romances that just ooze Australian charm, banter, and character).
For all my single dad romance girlies, this is a book you definitely need to have at the top of your TBR! And Devon is definitely an author you need to keep on your radar is this debut is anything to go by!
This was some of the best infertility representation I’ve read in ages! I’m always nervous going to a romance book where infertility is part of the plot, as all too often there’s a such a huge focus of it throughout the story only for there to be a random surprise epilogue baby thrown in. Which sure, some people dealing with infertility have that outcome but many don’t and I feel like that’s not represented enough. I felt like Cassidy’s feelings around her infertility were realistic and explored well. Her journey towards the realisation that biology isn’t all that makes a family was emotional and tough but again, I felt like that was very realistic.
Watching Cassidy’s relationship with Maisie develop was honestly better for me than her relationship with Callum! I loved how she slowly opened up to her and realised she loved her and wanted her in her life, and that even though she didn’t give birth to Maisie she was still an important part of her life. I loved that this wasn’t presented as a ‘consolation prize’ for Cassidy in place of having her own biological child - she loved Maisie completely and unconditionally. Same with the other children in her life - they weren’t placeholders for the children she wished she would have, they were loved for who they were.
The romance in the book almost felt like a side plot to me (even though it wasn’t) because I just didn’t feel as invested in it as I did with Cassidy’s infertility journey and relationship with Maisie! There is A LOT of conflict in this book - much of it is internal conflict as it’s written in first person POV, but that’s something to be aware of if a heap of conflict in a romance isn’t your thing.
{ARC review - thankyou very much to Devon for providing an early copy in exchange for my honest review}
If you’re looking for a cute but also emotionally thick second chance romance, this one's for you. Cassidy is living life with her roommate trying to make sure her business stays afloat through the winter months, when an unexpected tenant moves in across the hall. Turns out this mystery neighbor is Callum, her old best friend and her new landlord.
Callum is trying his best to handle divorce, single-parenting, and figuring out custody of his daughter. When he finds out his neighbor is an old flame from the past, he can’t help being pulled to Cassidy and the light she brings to his life.
The two fall easily back into their best friend tendencies, but this time there is a lot more at play in their lives compared to when they were teenagers. Cassidy has to face past hurts while Callum is figuring out a new balance with his daughter who holds the utmost importance in his life. Will these two get a shot at a second chance, or are they doomed before they even begin?
I enjoyed seeing Cassidy and Callum rekindle their friendship. I also think the author did a good job at addressing mental health in both the male and the female characters. Seeing the authenticity in their relationship and the fact they both need each other is refreshing. The only thing that didn’t do it for me was the lack of normal communication between Cassidy and Callum. There is definitely chemistry between the two, but there were times in the book I felt the two could be more intimate on an emotional level.
Overall, I enjoyed the plot and the romance between the best friends. So I give it a strong 3.5 stars.
I was so excited to have received an arc and I was not disappointed!!
As Devon May’s first novel this book was amazing to read. I didn’t want to put it down! I love Cassidy and Callum. And I really loved her cousin, Noah 😍 We need a Noah story, Devon!
I was happy we got to see so much of Cassidy’s shop and her growing into her business. Love that so much! I did get annoyed with her quick back and forth thought processing. And reminded myself how realistic it actually is having gone through trauma myself. That considered, I felt I was there and going through the motions with Cassidy. Experiencing her family friends being there for her was so heartwarming. I loved seeing so much of Callum’s POV, even if we didn’t get much of his background. And little Maisie was a delight. I love how she rounds out the story and becomes the whole reason for the book!
The only thing I would expect to improve in the authors writing are the steamy scenes. The imagery was definitely there. But…I was thrown off by repeated words, like nipple. I also would like to know more about Callum, other than he’s a newly single dad. I think a lot was implied, but not said. Like, exactly why did he buy the apartment building? Was it only for Cassidy?? How and why does he have so much money? Or, did I miss that? But, these things didn’t take away from the story, which was so meaningful and real. I look forward to more from Devon May! I just wish it were about Noah. Or even the younger guy at the bar with the deep voice 😂

“My soul has known yours for so long, Rogue. I didn’t need to make space for you, because all the space you need in my heart was carved out years ago.”- Callum
Review: Once again Devon May has created a wonderfully written romance that fills the soul with warm fuzzies. 💕
It compliments her novella ‘Because of Us following on from Madison to her sister Cassidy, the florist and business owner. 💐 Cassidy moved to Melbourne following her break up with her ex which involved infertility, so this may be a trigger for some readers. It is mentioned throughout the story because it’s a key element in Cassidy’s character development. 👧
Cassidy and Callum used to be friends and worked together as teenagers. Callum worked his way up the corporate chain and eventually moved.📈🏠
Fast-forward and Callum is now a newly single dad to his daughter Maisie and he moves into an apartment in a building he owns, which Cassidy is a tenant living across the hall. Callum is trying to navigate his divorce, becoming a single dad, and his anxiety. I love that anxiety has been portrayed in a male character, as I myself suffer from anxiety. It affects both genders and Devon executed it beautifully. 🧠
Callum and Cassidy were both great characters in their own right and together they complimented each other perfectly.💞
There are also a few spicy scenes that had my cheeks flushing.🤭
The plot flowed gracefully and there is a happy ending.🥰
