This is the story about Samantha Brown, our main character...and our future star of the show. Her mother was shot by her father when she was just a toddler. Although she has no memory of it, as most chaotic urban storylines are, she runs into that same man years later as an adult who immediately recognizes her as his daughter and the only surviving witness to her mother's murder. He, Frank Godfrey is apart of the biggest families running the music, entertainment companies in Atlanta. He's known on and off the streets as the one you don't want to get into it with. Along with his toxic wife, and two dysfunctional daughters...Sam's world turns upside down one night when she decides to go to a party and immerse herself in the only living family she has left. Fun little urban fiction tale that involves, shootings, drugs, one of the characters up and joins a cult at the end. There's even a no nonsense detective who talks to his deceased wife in his mind. Let's follow their lives as we navigate Atlanta through the lens of our newest Daughters of Atlanta.
Whew there’s a lot to unpack here so be patient with me 😅
The Godfrey brothers, Frank and Lucas, are one of the biggest names in the music industry. Coined the first family of ATL, they are untouchable. They also have their hands in their fair share of criminal activity and are not to be fkd with. The book opens up with a bang, LITERALLY 😩 and we slowly begin getting several POVs as various events unfold. The story centers around all of the Godfrey’s but primarily focuses on Franks illegitimate daughter Samantha.
Fate aligns Samantha with the Godfrey family and no one knows their true relation to each other. As time goes on, secrets are revealed and when those skeletons start to barrel out of the closet this family ends up in utter shambles.
Frank has two other daughters Lyric and Krystal and these two HATE each other. Once the reasons why are exposed you can’t help but empathize with them both.
I love the way Desiree’s mind works! She can’t help but give you an original storyline that has you feeling like you’re in the black twilight zone. She really set this story up well and of course there are so many unanswered questions that will hopefully get resolved during the next book release.
I highly recommend reading the brotherhood series because Stacie, Alpha, Omega and Deuce make an appearance and may even become an integral part of the story later on.
I can’t believe this just .. ended. I’m not new to the author’s work so I know how it goes but this is the first time I’ve been mad at the story ending abruptly. Once again, I’m happy to see Stacie Newman but this time she was giving off a weird vibe..idk. I’m worried about Lyric. Maurice is really walking around talking to himself but feels like Krys will lose it if he’s not her man. I was getting into the idea of Sam and Justin – I want to see how that plays out since he’s so loyal to Frank and Lucas (hate both of them real bad).
First of all, the entire Godfrey family is f*cking crazy. Frank, Uncle Lucas, Nina, Krystal, and Lyric — all f*cking crazy and equally annoying as hell.
Samantha Brown, daughter of Frank Godfrey, who murdered her mother when she was younger somehow becomes intertwined with the Godfrey family after helping Lyric Godfrey chase after a truck that supposedly had her ex-boyfriend in it.
This book had so many twists and turns that I probably screamed what the hell after each chapter ended because … WHAT!
My biggest “what the hell” moment was Maurice The Cop and his dead wife being introduced. HUHHH??
Now, the ending .. what the hell was that Desiree? Do I think it makes sense because it introduces characters from the Brotherhood series and The Perfect Sister? Yes, but the problem is that we don’t get any resolution regarding Samantha finding out the biggest secret of her life. Also, what the hell happened between Samantha and Justin? Where the hell is Lyric? So many questions left unanswered by an abrupt ending.
Ugh … love Desiree and her pen so I guess I’ll go read The Perfect Sister now.
This book was a lot. Multiple POVs, which I typically don’t mind, but there were some editing issues that made it confusing and slightly difficult to follow.
Still I would consider this a decent storyline about a toxic family, the Godfrey’s, and the sins of the past catching up to them.
The treacherous brothers, the damaged, insecure sisters, the nutty wife and her drug fueled rants….it was going down.
3.75 but I’m rounding up bc I really do like Desiree’s writing style *sigh* Desiree knows how to write a compelling story that makes you want to turn page after page. I just wish her cliff hangers weren’t so huge, especially not knowing when/if we’re going to get another installment of this.
I was intrigued to read this story because Frank Godfrey was mentioned in Book 2 of The Perfect Sister and the synopsis definitely drew me in.
One thing I will say about Desiree… when she writes “enemies to lovers”… she REALLY makes them enemies. These characters be hating each other so much it be hard for me to accept them actually together because the way I would have NEVER let Justin TOUCH me after how he acted outside that club. She did redeem him, but honestly, it was only so much that could be done.
What was the biggest disappointment about this one is that the entire premise of the book is around Frank killing Sam’s mother in front of her and how her not remembering spirals into this big mess leads to joining a cult.
What we got was (what I feel like) was more of the story of her and Justin… a super slow burn that wasn’t even that satisfying by the end.
Nobody is really likeable in this book. More like who’s the least hateable…
I’m intrigued by everyone’s storyline but I either needed a longer book or more about Frank and Janice’s actual background… not Lyric getting on my damn nerves the entire book.
Samantha learns more about her family then she ever has by accident.
While at the gas station she sees a young lady being thrown out of a car, she goes to help her, but she offers her money to follow the person that threw her out. She finds out the girl is Lyric Godfrey the daughter of one of the richest man in Atlanta in the music industry.
She accepts and follows the car, come to find out they were following the wrong car.
Lyric wants to be treated as an adult and asks her dad to move on her own. He only agrees because she said she will be moving in with her friend Sam. This decision is being made without Sam, she shows up to Sam’s house after snd tells her she’s moving in and she will pay all the bills.
When her dad Frank Godfrey comes to see where they will be staying he disapproves and put them up into a house, and told Sam she had no choice unless he wanted to pay back his daughter with interest.
A lot of drama pursues. But the truth comes out when Franks wife Nina accuses him of sleeping with Sam. He had to tell her that he wasn’t because she was his daughter.
Ends on a cliff hanger and don’t have access to the second part.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Desiree, oh my what in the world? The Godfrey family is just a ball of mess. Frank and Lucas are the devil and his sidekick. Lyric is a lost soul she knows things that can change the family. Samantha has no idea helping a stranger would change her entire world. I've never seen a mother that has so much jealousy and allowed her child to go through all this sick mess. My heart goes out the Sam and Lyric I hope Lyric finds herself and Sam can open up this can when we come back I know more answers will be found, and hopefully everyone will get their karma. I hope Frank realizes finally his sickness needs to be stopped.🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗
So I love the book, one thing about Desiree you’re going to get a story. There will be drama, mystery, murders, some family problems etc. I have 5 stars based on the writing, and how Intrigued I was. However I am over the ‘perfect sister’ storyline. I Just don’t like it and I’m Hoping this is the last story that mentions them. I will continue to read, because even though I don’t think the perfect sister has much to give. I do want to see where the story goes.
I started this on Vella. I was about to read episode 15 of this story and saw Desiree’s note about reading this first…and I am SOOOO HAPPY I DID 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾. So many wholes were filled…more background than what was in the Vella episodes. Now I need to go back and read the other books that were based on a Vella story. By far one of the most talented authors I’ve come across ♥️.
ALL of them. Samantha better be extra careful whether she stays around them or not! She already knows what they're capable of. The youngest is starved for love and attention, the momma is so guilt ridden and hurt behind her no good husband's antics she's become a drug addict and middle child (now that we know Sam is Frank's oldest) is so confused its a shame. I can't wait for the continuation of this story to see how it all plays out!
Leave it to Desiree to give us a family that was on another level. The Godfrey’s were definitely in a league of their own. The craziness, secrets and activities were just crazy. The book was well written and kept me ready to get to the next page. The ending made you ready to find out more about the Black Separatist group and the women showing up dead in the ATL.
Now why she go and do that. She didn’t even have to end that book like that. Got me over there looking like where is the rest. This family is something else. I want to feel for Krystal but her personality makes it hard to. Lyric needs to grow up mentally. Lucas & Frank ain’t ish. Nina got nothing but audacity. I love Justin.
This one was just okay. It didn't grasp my attention like the other books I've read by this author. The build up was good but then...it was over. The author left this book wide open with so many unanswered questions. I was a little disappointed because I wanted an ending, not a cliffhanger.
I can always count on a Desiree book to be unconventional, entertaining, and engaging. This did not disappoint. This may have been on Kindle Vella first but I did not read it there. I waited for it to be released as a whole book. There are so many twists and turns, just when you think you know you realize you have no idea! Now where's the rest of it.... lol
This is an interesting and unusual tale about the family Godfrey. Music moguls, richer than kings, headed by the infamous Frank Godfrey and his brother Lucas, the family is a dysfunctional as they come, and have more than a few skeletons in their closet. Five excellent stars!
This was a good read. Everything up until the very end, cohesively brought the story together. The ending about the Black Woman Separatists, kind of threw the book off course for me. I know that part of the story ties into other books, but it just didn’t fit in with this storyline. But I look forward to book 2.
I love that a lot of her books have secret connections. It has me blowing through her catalog very quickly. I started off reading her books under the Granger pen name and then decided to try reading one of the Desiree pen name books and was not disappointed at all. She tells an amazing story and I can never put her books down once i start.
The secrets have finally been revealed, and all hell has broken loose. The lives of Sam and the Godfreys will never be the same. I'm curious to see what happens next as each person deals with the aftermath.
Lyric baby go home. This family...what is it with these men not protecting us, the mother jealousy. So much goin on. Fir self so strong. One thing this author gonna give is Atlanta.
Whewww chile🔥! Never disappoints. Well written 👏🏾! The sister hood is soo interesting to me. Goes against society norms. Well put together leaves no detail unturned.
Well dang you just gone leave us hanging?? Did lyric go for the late dinner ? And I hope 🤞 Sam got out of jail . And does Kystal know who her real dad is ??? Dang now I have to wait
Desiree never disappoints. I love these characters. I like how her books and characters seem to tie to each other. I'm looking forward to see how everything plays out. I must say that in don't like Lucas.
This read was just crazy with sex, manipulation love, murder and loyalty all in one family. With all that this book had me turning the pages, but I need more from the Godfrey’s sisters, cousin (Krystal) with Mo and Justin along with Frank and Lucas. Nina too!!!
