Even if I grow up ‘monolingual’ my speech is influenced by a thousand ‘voices’ known and unknown, stretching back hundreds of years. Multilingual awareness is to know that language comprises a mosaic of speech from family and friends, songs and rituals, the speech of my town, and many past generations. Language is a bulk of history with countless traces that I will never know, entire regions of my mother tongue that will remain forever-unknown territory. Who is to say that this language is mine alone, my property? Language belongs to nobody and everybody.
.
The way to the inside is outside. The shortest way to your language is through another. To enter another language, even for one moment, is to become an exile.
.
It is not thinking, but rather speaking that differentiates humankind from other creatures. Loquor ergo sum. I speak therefore I am.
